Ho trobaràs explicat a molts llocs. -- ## ### Jordi Funollet ### http://www.terraquis.net -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-catalan-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe.

If so, how? --doug As far as I know, that's the default in Gnome: the bottom panel displays a button for every application you have open. If you don't have that, it should be easy to right-click on the bottom panel and add the appropriate applet. If you want all windows from all workspaces to be displayed, you just right-click on the panel applet and edit its properties accordingly. I think the OP is asking about the 'Window Selector' applet rather than the 'Window List' applet. The former appears in the top panel by default. You can add the applet to the bottom panel too: right click on the panel, choose 'Add to Panel...' and select the applet you require. You can then remove the corresponding applet from the top panel if you wish. -- Liam O'Toole Cork, Ireland -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. What's even funnier is that, independantly of my reporting the issues and having them closed WONTFIX, that some months later the features arrive in KDE from devs from their own accord (such as Windows 7 style window dragging), or the universal app menu. I reported a dozen usability issues on the new KAddressbook alone, all of which were ignored and then the app was release feature-incomplete to users in KDE SC 4.4 in order to receive wider feedback. I'll happily post bug numbers if anyone is interested. Re: change in behavior of iptables with respect to firestarter

I'm guessing I should try to run firestarter in the Pre-connection Script field first, and then fall back to using the Post-connection Script field if Pre-connection fails. Now I just have to decide which of the firestarter scripts it makes the most sense to use in this case. I'm guessing from the order in which things appear in the output seen in tty1 that the firestarter script will most likely have to run post-connection? I've manually started firestarter successfully after login with both of the following: # /etc/init.d/firestarter start # /etc/firestarter/firestarter.sh start ... I'll add this note. I spent a fair amount of time trying one alternative after another. First of all, for some reason, trying to get wicd to run firestarter didn't work with either command or in either the pre-connection or post-connection settings. I tried editing /etc/firestarter/firestarter.sh. I was able to get firestarter to start by commenting out some of the checks that script was performing. I'm thinking that the checks wouldn't be there if the developers hadn't thought they were needed for one reason or another. If I'm unwittingly defeating a check that affects the security of the system, I'd rather not do that. I'm also concerned that editing the regular startup scripts could run afoul of other issues. Obviously any update to firestarter might (and probably would) overwrite my customized scripts. That wouldn't be so bad if the danged thing didn't fail without putting a warning in a log or flagging my attention in some other way. This is a pretty sophisticated firewall front end, allowing for connection sharing and allowing you to limit service connections to specific IP addresses or IP address ranges, but it's not working reliably for me. And the moderator of their list hasn't bothered to respond to either my request to join the list or to allow an outsider post to the list. I decided that, rather than have a sophisticated application that I can't rely upon, I'd rather just do without or find a substitute. I was surprised to find gufw in the Debian repositories. (I think it was originally written for use in Ubuntu.) It's not anywhere near as sophisticated as firestarter, but it works, and it appears to have pretty active bugtracker and user list activity. I left firestarter on my wife's systems (where it works) and removed it from mine (where it doesn't). My wife's systems aren't used anywhere but at home on our own network behind a decent router. I'm just going to use gufw on my own systems for now, even though it won't allow me to limit inbound IP addresses. The choice with gufw is to all connections from anywhere or not to allow connections, but at least it's configured per service. I can tighten up ssh configuration on the host to help keep this from being a problem. I kind of feel like a schmuck for dropping firestarter this easily (especially after your attempt to help me with it), but I remember having a similar problem with it in another distro when I was testing a couple of years ago. If you look at the archives for their sourceforge list you can see that this non-starting issue has been around for a long, long time. The fact that I couldn't get a response from them (at least not yet) and the fact that the firewall rules can fail to be applied without any apparent warning to the end user has kind of killed my appetite for trying to work with the application. Many thanks again for your help, Rob Owens and Greg Madden! Regards, Gilbert -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? If you want all windows from all workspaces to be displayed, you just right-click on the panel applet and edit its properties accordingly. I think the OP is asking about the 'Window Selector' applet rather than the 'Window List' applet. The former appears in the top panel by default. Thanks. :) Recently (kernel 2.6.31 or so) there has been a separate kernel configuration option to optimize for SMT (Intel's word for it is hyperthreading). Separate from SMP (multiple processor). Under SMT, a single core running two threads looks like two cores to most of the kernel itself and to user programs. This has been true for a long time. Only now, there is more support and optimization for it. If your kernel has it enabled, some workloads won't see any difference, but some will benefit a lot. I think it is enabled by default in the most recent stock kernels (please correct me if I'm wrong.) Note, you may need to enable hyperthreading in your BIOS, as well. I would enable it for Core i7 and Atom. I tried the Proposed Network with a bridge as you explained. Connectivity for Dalton and Carnot was as intended. Oddly, Cantor remained connected to the LAN but lost connectivity to the Internet; as if masquerading had failed. Further ideas and suggestions are welcome. Also the Shorewall list might help. I'll guess that routing can achieve a result similar to bridging in this case. Bridging is more efficient? Some of the details in the configurations listings are probably outdated. Squeeze X broken on Inspiron 8500--how to report bug
I entered a bug that upgrading udev from lenny to unstable breaks X. (It also breaks with the squeeze version of udev ) ( http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=600551 ) The bug was closed without any changes to the package, or any other package. While I've found a workaround, I'm concerned that this problem means that Squeeze and X will not work out of the box for other people using an Inspiron 8500. What do I do now? Create another bug? Re-open the bug? Is reopening a bug only supposed to be done by debian-developers? Do I appeal to a higher authority within Debian? Am I wrong in thinking that this concern merits a bug report? Also, what package should the bug (new or reopened) be assigned to? I chose udev because it was the udev upgrade that triggered the problem, but maybe udev isn't the best choice. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. As far as I can tell from a quick read of the bug log, you are experiencing an incompatibility between the kernel and userspace, things that can happen when you run a mixed system. Unless you can reproduce the problem with a pure squeeze or pure unstable system I'd say you'll have to work around it. how to improve the quality of DVD created by qdvdauthor
Dear all, Have you ever used Qdvdauthor to create DVDs? I use mpeg2 files as source to create a DVD. The Resolution of the mpeg2 is 720x576 and clear, but the result is blurer although its resolution is 720x576 too. When I play the DVD, I can see obvious mosaics. Did I misconfigure anything? I use qdvdauthor 2.0100 and the host is Debian Lenny. Any suggestion will be appreciated. Best regards, Yuwen

This can be used if ARP entries for a lot of hosts have to be set up. The name of the data file is very often /etc/ethers, but this is not official. Upgrade to Squeeze failed
Well, this is the third or fourth upgrade to Squeeze from Lenny I have attempted, and they all have been painful. This one has failed, though. I upgraded and got everything working, but then I decided to clean up a bit. I did a couple of runs of `apt-get autoremove` and an `apt-get upgrade, along with installing startupmanager. I removed the old 2.6.26 kernel image, and then updated Grub. Then I rebooted the machine. Grub comes up, and if I let it boot to Windows, it works, but if I select Linux (normal or recovery), very shortly after starting to boot the video output from the machine just dies. I don't mean it goes blank, I mean the video goes away altogether, as if the machine is shut down. The monitor reports a loss of video signal, yet the PC is still running and continues to access the hard drive. When it was working, the machine would start out in text mode, but quickly would switch to graphics mode when booting. I am not certain, but I think it is at this same point the video output dies, now. I've tried booting from the installation CD and removing then re-installing xorg, kdm, and kdebase. No joy. What should I try, now? I captured the dmesg and syslog files, but nothing jumps out at me.
