Nvidia : j'ai encore tout cassé !!!
Salut. I don't see any reason to change it? What do UUIDs give me that /dev/hdx or /dev/sdx don't, aside from being harder to read and a pain to setup? As I understand it, there can be a problem if you add or remove peripheral internal hardware, i.e. add or remove a single hard disk on a system that has half a dozen hard disks , can result in *all* the hard disks getting different device names assigned on the next boot and stay that way until corrective action is taken manually. Two (quick?) examples: 1. Your main drive normally shows up as /dev/sda. You plug in a USB key after booting and it shows up as /dev/sdb. During an abnormal event, the system is rebooted with the USB key in place. The system won't reboot by itself because the USB key is now assigned the name /dev/sda and the main drive is /dev/sdb. This can happen for multiple reasons, all having to do with the hardware (combinations). This can (and did) happen with static /dev, devfs, and udev. The can (and did) happen both with the old serial kernel hardware probing and with the new parallel asynchronous kernel hardware probing. 2. You have an HBA that connects to some storage (internal or external) and exposes volumes as SCSI disks. You have disks on SCSI chain 0 (/dev/sd[ab]) and SCSI chain 1 (/dev/sd[c-g]). During some storage management, you run into some limitations of the HBA and, as a work-around, remove all the volumes on SCSI chain 0 (/dev/sd[ab] become inaccessible) and create larger volumes on SCSI chain 2 (/dev/sd[hi]). Upon the next boot, all the accessible devices change names. Again, this issue existed even before udev or the new kernel probing method. Using labels or UUIDs in /etc/fstab avoids or minimizes the impact of both these scenarios. Also, udev and/or the /dev/disk/by-* files can avoid or minimize the impact of both these scenarios. In addition, the parallel asynchronous kernel probing create(d/s) additional issues, where devices might change names from boot to boot even without any hardware changes (some might say both my examples as hardware changes), due to timing issues that vary from boot to boot or are different when cold booting vs. when warm booting. I (and the Squeeze release notes) recommend using labels or UUIDs whenever possible to simply avoid the issue. If you feel like depending on udev, the /dev/disk/by-* names should work as well. (LABEL= and UUID= syntaxes are not dependent on udev, only on a recent util-linux, IIRC.) -- Boyd Stephen Smith Jr. ,= ,-_-. =. b...@iguanasuicide.net ((_/)o o(\_)) ICQ: 514984 YM/AIM: DaTwinkDaddy `-'(. .)`-' http://iguanasuicide.net/\_/ signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.

speech-dispatcher always falls back to espeak
Hi list, accidently I updated kttsd to the version, which is using speech-disptcher. Formerly I was using kttsd-4.3.4, which was still not using speech dispatcher, and in which I could use mbrola. As I cannot revert, I tried to configure speech-dispatcher and kttsd to my needs, but I found no way, to get either festival nor flite or mbrola running as output module. 1. All necessary packages are installed. 2. I uncommented the entries modules for festival, espeak-generic-mbrola and flite in /etc/speech-dispatcher/speechd.conf. 3. Checked: Modules are loaded. 4. Checked: path to mbrola voices are ok. 5. Checked: festival is running. 6. Checked: binaries for flite and festival are available. 7. Output module is alsa, as pulseaudio (not installed), does not support my hardware. 8. Tried a user specific configuration with spd-conf, whatever I am telling to use, speech-dispatcher is still using espeak instead of festival or flite. 9. In the GUI of kttsmgr a) I cannot choose other languages (except when using espeak), b) when chosing flite as output, it is only telling in English (but German is required) I suppose it might be a bug, there is is already a bugreport by me, which might be related to this. That bugreport was closed, but IMO it should be reopended. Can someone else check, if he is able to use the combination of speech-dipatcher + festival|mbrola + German-language (de)? But sometimes the perfect is the enemy of the vastly better. I simply cannot believe that the current situation will persist through the next several releases of Debian. Something better will be found, IMHO. Sure, sometimes what the vast majority think is better is not the default :-) But the current situation is here to stay, it's an upstream decision that was taken years ago and we (in fact, not just we at Debian, but any other distribution) have to stick to it. It could be somehow improved, I agree, but finding a universal and uniquely way of doing things (and that works) is not that easy :-) I still miss the old-plain-intuitive method for designating block devices (hda → first ide, hdb → second ide device, sda → first scsi/sata device, etc...) but we have to cope the new changes because they are vry much needed (nowadays we connect many devices of diverse nature, most of them hot-swappable and they cannot overlap). In this regard, every user chooses the best method for identifying hard disks (I like labels for removable devices and uuid/id for fixed hard disks) but lastly this is just a matter of convenience, here there is no one size fits all, no method is perfect for all the situations and all of them have their own drawbacks. I agree that labels are good on hot pluggable devices. I think that happens under Gnome, at least in some circumstances. (or at least it has happened on my computer at times when I have had Gnome installed.) I think labels could be made to work for internal devices with a small measure of cooperation from the installer. What is needed, in my naive opinion, is that the installer use a label if one present on a partition and if it does not conflict with a label that it has already seen in a once through scan of the block special devices. Only if there is a name collision would it use a UUID, and it would generate a new UUID only if the pre-existing UUID conflicts with an already seen the UUID that is on a unlabeled partition. There can be many problems with labels, and having problems with the internal storage can lead to severe and unexpected results I really prefer to avoid, and for that reason (and for internal storage) I'd go for uuid or id as the default. Yes, that's not a human readable format but in the end, is the computer which has to deal with it, not us... we could masquerade those lengthy names in the same way we use a DNS server for domain names to find/translate the numeric IP address of billions machines in the world :-) Greetings, -- Camaleón -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. I would make some tests: - Try to create a new user account and check if the same happens from there. - After installing any package, restart the gnome-panel (from console, run killall gnome-panel) and recheck the Debian menu language. Playing with apt-listchanges
Hello, I would like to configure apt-listchanges in a more convenient manner that is currently now setup. 1/ Is it possible to tell it to do not display the messages when performing the update? I know those messages are important but I would prefer to read them later, when I have enough time and not in the middle of an update where connection can be suddenly dropped or something can happen. I'm using apt to update wheezy. 2/ In connection with the above, is there any way to tell apt-listchanges something like: hey, I want to read all of the last 50 messages without needing to pass the exact parameters to extract the information of each package? System broken after kernel upgrade - explanation?
I've been using linux-image-2.6.38-2-686 for some time without preblems. After a dist-upgrade in Sid today I acquired linux-image-2.6.39-1-686-pae. On booting this I had no connection (wired) to my router. Also, on starting X (startx) the screen locked up and I had to do a hard reset. I reverted to linux-image-2.6.38-2-686, which was working previously, and the same errors now appeared: no connection to router and lockup in X. Luckily, I still had linux-image-2.6.37-2-686 and this runs without problems. I can only suppose that some package which was also upgraded today (there were various libraries) has affected both kernels. I would put in a bug report but I have no idea where the problem could lie. usb harddrive problem
Some months ago I purchase a Toshiba 640 Gb usb hard drive and successfully used it to backup an internal drive on my Debian Squeeze system. Shortly after the backup the system could no longer connect to the usb drive. A second system running Debian Lenny had no problem connecting to the usb drive. need help with gnome-keyring-manager
I have installed Squeeze on some different hardware for my desktop computer. On previous install attempts (on other hardware) I have had problems with gnome-keyring-manager interfering with my ability to use ssh. Those problems seem to be recurring on this newer hardware and I am looking for ways to disable gnome-keyring-manager. I like to use Aptitude to get Debian packages. I did the install using netinstall CD 6.0.1a. What is the most painless way to get Gnome running *without* gnome-keyring-manager. I'm sure there are reasons why some will argue that gnome-keyring-manager is a *good*thing*, but my experience has been that if I let it exist on my computer it will eventually cause me to mess up something and force a full re-install, so help please. How do I avoid installing it? And, since it is there now, is there a way to cleanly purge it?
