a tu carpeta recientemente creada.

kommer in.

Login music in console

2012-10-27 Thread Dr Beco
Dear linuxers,

What little program would you recommend to simple play a music like
/usr/share/sounds/KDE-Sys-Log-In-Short.ogg

Is there a small console player fit to this simple task?

Should I put it on ~/.profile? It would be better if the music play
only once per turn on, not every successfull login.

Thanks,
Beco

If I understand, you're sitting at a Debian box, and want to
remote-control a remote Linux box and/or a remote XP box.

To remote to the Linux box, ssh will probably do what you want: ssh -Y

To remote to the XP box, you can try rdesktop: rdesktop

Everything has to be setup to work with these tools, but that's the
general route you want to go, probably.

Advice on system purchase

2012-10-27 Thread Marc Shapiro
I'm really getting annoyed by my random system lockups, so I have been
looking at new motherboards, new systems, etc.

A whole new system would be simplest since my current box has an old 32
bit single core Athlon 2800+ and anything that I buy is going to be 64
bit. Simpler to install from scratch than try to replace the
motherboard with a new one and then upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit kernel
and software.

I saw a Fry's add for a motherboard, an AMD 8 Core CPU and memory for
$250 which was pretty tempting. I did a search on the Processor and
found that Tiger Direct has a bundle with the same CPU, a similar
motherboard, 8 GB of RAM, a DVD burner and a 1 TB Seagate HD (
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2826919csid=_22
). Has anyone used this system, or any of these components? Comments?

My main worry is the hard drive. I currently have what I think is its
older cousin, a 1 TB SATA II drive. It works perfectly and I have
always liked Seagate drives. I know that there are people out there who
have had trouble with Seagate, but there are also many who have not.
Any individual drive can be a lemon. That's not my problem. The
question that I have is that this drive seams to have Advanced Format 4K
sectors. The ad says that there are no utilities to run and no extra
integration steps. I have read enough posts here about problems with
Advanced Format to be wary of their claim, though. Does anyone have
experience with this drive, or with other Seagate drives with 4K sectors
and Seagate SmartAlign?

as is everyone's.

plus mobo w/VGA/DVI/HDMI, 8GB of AMD memory (they make DIMMs now):

And a fast 120GB SSD:

Total: $243 USD + shipping

Acquire the parts list above, use the SSD as the system/swap drive and
primary storage (mailbox, etc). Use your current Seagate drive as a
data drive (media files etc). The Advanced Format issue just evaporated.

compiling a Debian package

2012-10-27 Thread lee
Hi,

is it a bug that should be reported when a source package doesn't
compile? And how come that there is a binary package though it cannot
be compiled?

What kind of hardware you need depends on what the requirements are
which you have.

My main worry is the hard drive. I currently have what I think is its
older cousin, a 1 TB SATA II drive.

Is there anything that speaks against keeping it?

or with other Seagate drives with 4K sectors and Seagate SmartAlign?

My experience with 4k WD disks is that they work just fine.

It depends. Which version of the compiler and libraries do you have
installed, and which version was used on the buildd? And is the
current version buildable in sid and wheezy? If so, it's may not be a
release critical bug, although it may still be a bug.

Please check these details (versions of packages, compiler etc.).

HTH.
