 questions (donc vers sites-available).
 a2ensite = Apache2 ENable SITE
 a2dissite = Apache2 DISable SITE
 a2enmod = Apache2 ENable MODule
 a2dismod = Apache2 DISable MODule

# lspci
snip
04:05.0 Network controller: Texas Instruments ACX 111 54Mbps Wireless Interface

part:
# iwconfig
lono wireless extensions.

eth0 no wireless extensions.

It is possible, but only if using a 2.2.12 or later web server, built

Re: Sin opciones de accesibilidad en Iceweasel (era: Problems with iceweasel 10 in squeeze.)

2012-11-11 Thread manuel
Hola.

descarregada e a luz vermelho piscando permanece...

Obrigado.

New Dovecot and Kmail

2012-11-11 Thread David Baron
Every version upgrade of Dovecot causes config problems (running Sid). I hand
edited the doveconf -n stuff in after choosing to keep my old .conf and not
being able to get the choice again. Got it working, finally.

KMail seems to be getting my imap stuff but get and error box each time:
Error while getting folder information.
Unable to get information about folder ~/mail. The server replied: Mailbox
isn't selectable

No combination of namespace prefix, kmail imap account namespace, etc, seems
to change this. Any ideas??

home dirs in this machine have root ownerships.

Knowing it's NTFS may make a big difference. You have to think how Winders
handles access rights. You may have to do it using ACLs. This may be a dumb
question: do any ACL tools work with NTFS?

Try:
  apt-get install acl
  getfacl /home/gean
and see what appears.

You could try:
  setfacl -m user:gean:rwx /home/gean
  setfacl -m group:gean:rwx /home/gean
It doesn't change ownership, but it may give you rwx access.

Getfacl/setfacl works on EXTn (and maybe ReiserFS); I don't know if it works
with NTFS-3G. The ACLs work through samba on Win systems (and even allow Win
systems to set access rights via Properties-Secuiryt). If it doesn't work,
there may be other tools that work.

And in one instance, I discovered that umount was not un-mounting a

I simply re-mounted the already-mounted directory, and then umount

Have you tried restarting the machine (an easy way to ensure that

It's probably worth checking the cable connections and trying a

Re: partitions - primary vs logical and bootability

2012-11-11 Thread Rick Thomas

On Nov 10, 2012, at 9:49 PM, Charles Blair wrote:

Thank you very much for your reply. I think I will post
a restatement of the question. I would have thought that
a dual boot of windows 7 and debian would be a common
enough problem that there should be something about it
somewhere, perhaps in the installer instructions.

1) Make your Linux partition an everything partition (root, boot,
usr, var, home, and so on...), in Primary slot #4.

Just to get more detail on how this would work:
I would create a primary partition using all the available
free space, described as / and bootable? This would work
even though there isn't swap space?

I must admit I'm afraid to tinker with the windows section,
so that your other idea of backing up one of the windows partitions
(don't even know how I would do that) and doing things so I
have only two primary winows partitions and
have one primary debian partiton for / (bootable) and one extended
partion for swap, /home, etc. Actually I must be misunderstanding
your idea, since I think swap is somehow incompatible type from /,
/home, etc.

If you've got enough RAM, you don't absolutely have to have a swap
partition. If you're short on RAM you can make a swap file in the
root directory and use it. E.g.:

dd if=/dev/zero of=/swap bs=1M count=512
mkswap /swap
swapon /swap

To back up the Windows partition, you probably want an external (e.g.
USB) hard disk to put the backup image onto.

Take a look at the clonezilla utility as described at
http://www.linuxjournal.com/content/clonezilla-live
for ideas.

used for serious audio productions. At the moment I'm producing. It's
very time consuming and a lot of the things I need aren't available.
 The card

in one 19 reverb, already a help, but not enough for my needs.

Are there any professional PCIe audio cards that are working with

such a card at least on one list.

to mean it must be a primary partition. However,
when I do that, the installer shows the remaining

logical partitions for swap, /usr, etc.

I'm sure I'm overlooking something basic. Thanks
 for your patient help.

As others have said, up to four primary partitions, OR one extended
partition and up to three primaries.

The difference between them is that only four slots are allocated for
partitions in the table: IBM apparently thought that nobody would ever
need more than four. The 'extended' partition is an entry in the four
slot table pointing to another disc area where more partition table
entries can be placed. There's little agreement on how many are
'enough' these days, and an OS will often permit more on a SCSI drive
than an ATA. You can usually bet on at least ten 'logical' partitions
being available.

There is no practical difference between primary and logical partition
usage *except* that Windows (up to and including XP to my knowledge,
probably later versions also) requires that the first primary partition
it can recognise (i.e. the partition table says it's FAT or NTFS) must
be marked with the 'bootable' flag, and must contain a few critical boot
files. Apart from that, anything can be anywhere, including the Windows
directory which contains the entire OS apart from the boot files.

Linux does not make use of the 'bootable' flag, though Linux
partitioning utilities can set and display it. Linux does not need
anything to be stored on a primary partition.

By the way, one or possibly two of the NTFS partitions will not
normally be used, they are usually a recovery partition (MS hasn't
supplied installation media for many years) and the computer
manufacturer's rescue tools and drivers. Windows itself normally only
uses one partition on consumer OEM computers. If that is indeed the
case, they can be copied off elsewhere (with a note of their partition
table entries) and the space used, and can be copied back to the same
physical disc locations if you ever need to reinstall Windows. Don't
try moving Windows itself (though its partition can usually be shrunk)
because some of the OS knows where it is, on which individual hard
drive, and assumes that if it's not there it's an illegal copy, and
will refuse to run.

Note that the partition table is completely separate from the rest of
the drive. The first thing you ever do when messing with partitions is
to write all the numbers down or print it. Then, if you make a complete
mess of the table, so long as you haven't mounted anything and written
to it, you can often use a rescue disc to rewrite the partition table
exactly as it was, and restore things. Just don't bet irreplaceable
files on that principle, because the one day you are out of luck will
be that day...

Re: Printing on HPLaserJetP1102w

2012-11-11 Thread GEOFF BAGLEY
Dear Michael.

I thought of another approach.

Could I get the HPLaserJetP1102w to work as
a network printer ?

If the answer is yes, would the various
printers connected to the network still
face the same problem, or do they just see the network ?

I tried the HP we site, and it eventually
said that the printer was not supported on
Debian squeeze.
On my wife's machine, the printer is not
supported on Ubuntu 12.04.

My HPPhotosmart 5510, which is inkjet rather
than a laser printer, is not so difficult,
and is also network capable.

Perhaps I should go away and study network
printing.

Best regards.

This appears to be really old.

The above document was last revised on August 4, 2012. I wouldn't
classify that as really old. Perhaps you assumed that it is old
because I recommend using kernel-package, rather than make deb-pkg
or some other newer method. kernel-package has been around a while,
yes. But I recommend it for what I consider to be good reasons,
which are explained over time in the document. You are, of course,
entitled to disagree with my opinion. But it's not old. I make an
effort to keep it up to date, and suggestions are welcome.

I don't have time to read the current howto now, but I'll read it ASAP.
It describes the way I build Debian and Ubuntu kernels since years, but
while my scripts are a little bit outdated, Stephen updated his howto.
However, even my outdated scripts still do work. I used a script
version from Wheezy to build a kernel for my current Ubuntu ...
$ uname -v #1 SMP PREEMPT RT Fri Nov 2 21:36:37 CET 2012 ... so 9 days
ago this old style to build a kernel still worked.

It works for Debian and Ubuntu since years. I added --rootcmd
fakeroot, but run the script as root ;) and for sure my script does
install packages that aren't needed to build a kernel. But all in all
nothing important changed in the last years.

However, from time to time there were some issues that could be fixed
by reading the error messages and since custom build kernels usually
aren't build to fit all needs, we even could abandon some things, if
compiling those would cause trouble.

I remember one issue that occurred very often,
in /lib/modules/KERNEL_VERSION the /build and /source links were
missing or bad.

At least for Ubuntu this still is an issue, right now I noticed

build - /usr/src/linux-3.6.5-rt14 but correct would be linked
against linux-headers-3.6.5-rt14.
IIRC this was an issue for my latest Debian installs too.

+1 for old school. I'm pro progress, but IMO it isn't alway progress to
use new methods, to do old things. Most of the times new methods tend to
fail, e.g. systemd [1] makes many *nix users to switch from Linux to
another *nix. Basic workflow only should change, if it's really
useful. We aren't building kernels very often, so we should be able to
relay on a method that always can be used, without reading tons of fine
manuals. I'm cleaning my tableware, but I don't change the old dishes
with new once, new tableware might look nicer, but it don't add any
new features, it only needs resources to get new tableware and it's
risky, since it might no be as dishwasher-proof as the tableware I
already own.

I hope we won't lose manifoldness for Linux :(.

Regards,
Ralf

PS:
Another example:
http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/apt-howto/ch-helpers.en.html
I can't see anything that's obsolete.

[1] Arch Linux did ban peole from the users mailing list that argued
against systemd and meanwhile upstream makes systemd a dependency for
even DEs. I'm writing to this list and get replies off-list, because
some people aren't allowed to write to this list anymore.

Thanks Brian. I had given up, and taken the machine back to my wife's desk.
So I went there, and went to the site you quoted. My wife'nachine runs
Ubuntu 12.04.
The site installed the software- TWICE!, so I went to the print menu and there
were two copies of the printer there. One (the first one) was dead, but the
other one picked up and printed OK.
We tested it on another unrelated file and that printed too.

I guess the upgrade from Ubuntu 10.04 to 12.04 required either the printer or
the driver to be reinstalled.

That leaves my favourite Debian 6.06 squeeze on my two other machines.
I wish now to investigate an ethernet or even WiFi network printing capability
for my three machines with their three printers.

Many thanks for giving me a push at the right time, and also to others who have
helped me.

Best regards.

The above document was last revised on August 4, 2012. I wouldn't
classify that as really old. Perhaps you assumed that it is old
because I recommend using kernel-package, rather than make deb-pkg
or some other newer method. kernel-package has been around a while,
yes. But I recommend it for what I consider to be good reasons, which
are explained over time in the document. You are, of course, entitled
to disagree with my opinion. But it's not old. I make an effort to
keep it up to date, and suggestions are welcome.

I found I misread references to 2.6.8.

I am sorry. I was too quick in my judgement of how recent your webpage
was.

I use kernel-package make-kpkg myself actually.

  I suggest looking at

I know of. I still use make-kpkg, cause it does everything for me

Turned out to be a permissions problem.

So you used your regular user to compile the kernel.

But a deprecated place for it. Just compile the kernel from a
  directory in your home directory.

Thanks, Martin. Yes, I have looked at the website you refer to, and
tried to use it. And I have the book to which you refer. The trouble
is, that for the basic stuff they are simply above my head. Stephen
gives more explanation and more and clearer instructions.

I shall certainly avail myself of what the book and
http://kernel-handbook.alioth.debian.org/ say - but shall also use
Stephen's site, which I find very useful. So much of the
documentation from which one has to work is old - but that doesn't
make it useless. And anyway, I think that Stephen updates his site,
  so it is not outdated.

Stephen's page isn't outdated. Perhaps kernel-package has been
deprecated by the kernel maintainers [1] [2] - even though it's still
being patched according to the wheezy changelog.

Right. I was too quick on that.

Sorry.

I've also never seen any Debian documentation pointing to building a
kernel elsewhere than in /usr/src/. It's been the RHEL/Fedora way
 for years though.

That doesn´t make it a good practice.

I still think using a directory in home is more suitable and am following
recommendation of Greg Kroah-Hartman and others there as well as the
official recommendation in kernel README:

INSTALLING the kernel source:

 - If you install the full sources, put the kernel tarball in a
directory where you have permissions (eg. your home directory) and
   unpack it:

 gzip -cd linux-3.X.tar.gz | tar xvf -

   or

 bzip2 -dc linux-3.X.tar.bz2 | tar xvf -

Replace X with the version number of the latest kernel.

Do NOT use the /usr/src/linux area! This area has a (usually
incomplete) set of kernel headers that are used by the library header
files. They should match the library, and not get messed up by
whatever the kernel-du-jour happens to be.

Granted, you can just build in a sub directory of /usr/src, but still I
would not clog that directory with my own manual builds and just leave it
to the package manager, module-assistant, possibly dkms.

Ciao,

Slackware 14.0 is available and it also has a small footprint. If you

Any hint why the two accounts might behave differently are very welcome.

A console-only install of Debian Squeeze i386 can have a fairly small
memory footprint (my CVS server uses 42 MB):

I'll bet some key files in .ssh/ are readable by other than the owner. Nothing
in .ssh (and the dir itself) should have 'group' or 'other' perms set. Try:
  chmod -R g-rwx,o-rwx /home/gpxrecorder/.ssh
You should do that for /home/rd/.ssh as well.

If you have the file '.ssh/config', check it for oddities.

Yes, I want to login at both accounts from my machine at home. One (rd) works
the other (gpxrecorder) does not. The miracle (for me) is that the
configuration for both accounts seems to be absolutely identicalit
certainly is not, but where is the difference hidden?

Have you generated SSH keys for the gpxrecorder account?

Hmm...authorized_keys contain keys from the user who wants to login. I does
not make sense to generate keys for the gpxrecorder account (?).

That should not be a problem, you can happily mount stuff over other
stuff (the other stuff will be invisible then and lead to confusion
between df and du, but apart from that, it’s fine).

Could it maybe be possible that the kernel somehow does not
recognize /dev/ad0s1 as a block device? If I try to mount
/var/log/syslog, mount appears to set up a loop device
automatically, which then leads to some confusion as mount.ntfs
complains that there is no NTFS header there. Maybe something similar
is happening here?

Best,

Claudius

apt / aptitude question

2012-11-11 Thread David Guntner
Hello,

Mandriva refugee here. :-) New to Debian, but have been using some form
of *NIX since 1986. Have been a happy Mandriva user since the Mandrake
7 days, but that new company that purchased it, resulting in them losing
most of their talent, has finally caused me to leave; the last update to
the OS (which was the first under the new regime) left me with a system
that barely runs. So I looked around and decided that Debian might be a
good distro for me to use (plus, my webhosting provider is using Debian
on their servers; I decided it might be nice to not have to change
mental gears when I ssh into my vps :-) ).

I've been working on figuring out the various quirks and differences
between the two and Google Has Been My Friend in this a lot. :-) Even
managed to find a reference to using an Ubuntu source to install Freenx
from the .deb packages that they provide since for some reason Debian
doesn't (so that's something I won't have to do without - yay!).

However, I've had no luck finding any useful information on this one
particular item; maybe I'm just not wording the search correctly. I'm
hoping someone here can give me a hand.

In Mandriva, they use a wrapper to rpm called urpm{x} (where {x}
represents an action that you want to do i for install, e for erase,
etc.). There are options that allow you to see what files are related
to packages, whether they are installed in the system or not. There are
two in particular that I'd like to have happen here.

In Mandriva if I enter:

urpmq -i {somepackage}

I will get an output that's pretty similar to what I get if I enter:

aptitude show {somepackage}

in Debian. So far, so good. However, on the Mandriva side, if I enter:

urpmq -fi {somepackage}

I'll get the package information *and* a listing of all files provided
by that package. I can't seem to figure out (or find out) how to do
that same thing in Debian. Is there a way? And if so, how to do it?

As to the second variation on this theme, under Mandriva, if I enter:

urpmf {somefilename}

It will spit back a list of all packages that provide that filename or
any part of it. It's treated like a substring - for example if I type
urpmf kross it will list the package that provides /usr/bin/kross, and
will then go on to show other packages that have that string in it like
/usr/lib64/libkokross.so.7 and so on. This can be controlled by
entering something like urpmf /usr/bin/kcross, though other things in
/usr/bin that start with kcross will also show up.

I haven't figured or found out yet how to get that kind of search
functionality within Debian. So as above, is there a way to do this,
and if so, how?

Thanks for any help!

Thanks Charlie, Russell, Neal, Zind and Tom.

As you say, the problem is the NTFS partition does not support ownership for
individual folders (not POSIX compatible), just one ownership for the whole
partition.
 Following this tutorial here:
http://www.thetechrepo.com/main-articles/531-setting-ownership-chown-on-an-ntfs-partition-in-ubuntu-with-ntfs-3g

 my /etc/fstab now is:
 * /dev/sda3 /home auto defaults,umask=007,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 0*

With this, all in /home now belongs to me, as I am the only real user, this is
not a problem for now.

I dunno -- perhaps that's the problem. (I use Debian Squeeze i386 and

A console-only install of Debian Squeeze i386 can have a fairly small
memory footprint (my CVS server uses 42 MB):

 2012-11-11 12:59:16 dpchrist@cvs ~

 Swap:0k total,0k used,0k free,19004k cached

Perhaps somebody with a console-only amd64 server can post data for that.

After clearing the caches (/sbin/sysctl vm.drop_caches=3), one of my amd64
console-only systems uses about 94MiB. With apache2 and samba running,
dropping the cache brings it down to about 105MiB.

I've noticed that 64-bit Wheezy likes to cache a lot more in RAM. Without
doing much on my 64-bit Wheezy XFCE desktop, it has built up to 2.8GiB used
(1.1GiB cached, 740MiB buffers); dropping the cache reduces mem usage to about
620MiB. This is a departure from 32-bit Squeeze with PAE and KDE which never
used that much memory 'doing nothing', though it might be that 32-bit+PAE
performs cache-usage computations sees only 4GiB RAM (32-bit) rather than all
8GiB.
