¿has desinstalado/purgado iceweasel? S2. Hi Bob, I assume from this that services are being monitored. If they are restarted and during the restart the monitoring detects that the service is offline then it triggers an alert. And whatever the First it will try to restart the service, if this fails the service will be migrated to another node. setting of Maintenance-Mode does basically tells the monitoring to ignore any problem for that time period. Is that about right? Yes. But it will disable the monitor for all services on all nodes, which isn't always needed. I see the problem for you now. Because various packages such as phpmyadmin will run the restarts in the postinst scripts. Therefore in order to really determine what would be restarted it would be necessary to walk through the postinst scripts. And that is an open ended basically practically impossible problem. Correct. At the moment I try out update-rc.d to avoid any service to be restarted during upgrade, but I wonder if there might be a better solution. It's policy-rc.d, of course, not update-rc. That is an idea. Every use of a postinst script to restart a daemon should be gated by policy-rc.d. And you could always approve the restart but that script could at that time put the node into your maintenance-mode right then. Don't know what you would use to return it to regular service afterward. Perhaps after a timeout. That is a nice idea, thanks. At the moment policy-rc.d just exit with 101. Note that I (on this mailing list) learned recently that while policy-rc.d does gate all uses of postinst it does nothing at boot time. I think that is a hole in the feature set. During boot time the daemon is started regardless of any policy-rc.d configuration. That's fine. The init-Scripts for the monitored services are disabled at boot time and the Cluster Resource Manager will start them. I think that policy-rc.d is ignored at boot is more of a feature (at least in some use cases). I'll check out your idea and think it will work quite fine. Thanks again. Re: Fwd: iptables and networking
One more bit on the use of the 'recent' match against DoS. Pascal Hambourg a écrit : The ruleset using the 'recent' match is based only on TCP packets with the NEW state, i.e. the initial SYN. A single SYN packet can be easily forged with a spoofed source address. Fail2ban is based on authentication failures, which first requires a TCP connection to be established with the 3-way handshake. As it involves a positive reply from the spoofed address, this is much harder to achieve, unless the attacker is in a special position on the network. The 'recent' match could be used if it was possible to detect the last packet of the TCP 3-way handshake sent by the client, confirming the connection is established. Unfortunately it just looks like any other ACK packet in the stream (same TCP flags, same conntrack ctstate and ctstatus), except that it is the first ACK (without SYN). Using connection mark and packet mark, I guess it is possible to detect it : By default, packet mark and connection mark are 0 If an ACK is received in the original direction and the connection mark is 0, then set the packet mark and connection mark to 1 Translated into iptables rules : -A INPUT -p tcp --tcp-flags SYN,ACK,RST ACK -m connmark --mark 0 \ -m ctstate --ctstate ESTABLISHED --ctdir ORIGINAL -j MARK --set-mark 1 -A INPUT -p tcp -m mark --mark 1 -j CONNMARK --set-mark 1 It seems to work, but I have not tested it extensively. WARNING : --ctdir is inverted in kernels older than 2.6.39 (fix not backported in any stable/longterm release at kernel.org), so you must use REPLY instead of ORIGINAL (or negation with !) if you use such kernel. If your ruleset already use packet marks or connection marks for other purposes, you may need to apply masks to divide the marks into bitfields. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. I have it monitoring my email (smtp/imap/pop3) ports. Even though it is set to trigger after two failures, I have seen as many as 50+ failures logged from the same ip address within seconds before fail2ban is triggered. To address your first problem with fail2ban, the sshd-ddos filter for fail2ban does not require authentication failures. sshd will log a message of the form Did not receive identification string from IP if someone makes a TCP connection and then disconnects without going through the SSH handshake. That's one message which can be logged (for SSH). But the message (and where it is logged) is going to be dependent on the program/service running on the particular port (and sometimes the version of the program/service). After all, SSH is not the only possible entry point. I'm not so worried about SYN attacks from spoofed IP addresses as I am attempts to break in (despite several security measures). (Self-inflicted wounds are always the most irksome, aren't they?) The aptitude default setting of installing recommends probably works okay for Gnome and KDE, but perhaps a little less so for Xfce or the even more minimalist DEs. I don't think it's a matter of DE, but what you are using the system for, available resources and admin knowledge. If the point of the installation is to be, let's say, multifunctional, then installing Recommends (except maybe specific packages) is useful. If your system is designed for quite specific needs or even has to run with limited resources (e.g. a Raspberry Pi class machine), then turning Recommends off and installing them only as needed is probably more practical. Beware though that, as with every non-default setting, you may be using your system in a way that is not as thoroughly tested or supported as the default setting. And don't even bother to report bugs about missing functionality before checking the Recommends. Kind regards, Andrei Thank you for those observations. I haven't participated much on this list, but I've noted that your contributions are always among the most helpful and insightful. In point of fact, I used to always use aptitude to install only the harder dependencies and was used to having to search through the Audit / Recommends function to fix any missing functionality that I needed. In retrospect, that happened very infrequently, so I'm pretty happy to operate that way. Adding only as needed seems to work okay for me. I may be a little obsessive about avoiding the installation of stuff that (I think) actually doesn't do anything for me. Even Xfce seems to be getting a little heavy for my tastes, though I think it's a pretty good compromise between provision of a fully functional DE and simplicity. On some systems I have used only a WM -- sometimes even eschewing use of a DM. They haven't been quite as pretty as my Xfce systems, but I hardly miss the decoration when I'm busy actually working with the systems. I will be mindful about not reporting bugs without checking the Recommends list. But I'd rather take that tack than watch the whole of the Gnome DE come flooding onto my ostensibly Xfce system, essentially because of a bluetooth dependency. I avoid bluetooth like the plague and turn off the hardware on all my systems. ;-) Thanks again for your observations. The command last (on server) shows only the login of current month, on the server. The command last -f /var/log/wtmp.1 shows only the month before. Is there any way to get this information? monitor turns off when external monitor not plugged
Hello, I have an Acer 771G notebook and when I installed debian wheezy, I had my external monitor plugged. Re: Switching to 64 bit
I enjoyed very much to read your previous post, but here I'll have to disagree. Debian aims to be a universal operating system, but this is to some point contradictory with the pace of computer architecture innovation, which is not at all controlled by free software community, but self imposed as a natural pace of technological development disregarding all social issues in this run to faster and the constant cycle of trashing good piece of hardware. Debian is great because it strives and grows despite these difficulties and brings us somewhat outdated software that behaves great and respects us. Not because it is the most bleeding edge of technological enhancement. I'm not saying we shouldn't move. But as I see, the question to move is basically different to different kinds of computer use and developers shouldn't blame people for not rushing to upgrades. Said developers should question why their push wasn't seen as primary issue as they first thought it was. -- Luther Blisset GNUPG/PGP KEY: 6722CF80 I challenge you to play the game in which there is no loser but everything is fun and worthwhile! ---BeginMessage--- On 6/29/2013 6:00 PM, Doug wrote: So why have we been bamboozled into running 64 bits if there is no advantage? Moving to 64 bit now gets everyone ready. Another is the desire of developers to eventually dump the 32 bit x86 instruction set altogether. Those who write the memory management code disdain the segmented addressing scheme of x86. x86-64 provides a much flatter memory model which is easier to program. If they are restarted and during the restart the monitoring detects that the service is offline then it triggers an alert. And whatever the First it will try to restart the service, if this fails the service will be migrated to another node. Ah... And so the plot thickens! Quick monitoring, sense a failure, trigger a restart on a different node. And of course I think that would all work fine but it would generate a lot of noise to wade through when there are upgrades that restart daemons. setting of Maintenance-Mode does basically tells the monitoring to ignore any problem for that time period. Is that about right? Yes. But it will disable the monitor for all services on all nodes, which isn't always needed. Hmm... (Thinking... No ideas.) At the moment I try out update-rc.d to avoid any service to be restarted during upgrade, but I wonder if there might be a better solution. Another idea. There is probably an apt post hook (untried) such as APT::Update::Post-Invoke-Success that could be used at the very end to return the node back to normal service. I know that apt-show-versions uses it to run an update script after apt has finished. At the moment policy-rc.d just exit with 101. The problem I see with that is that you won't actually ever restart the daemon when it needs to be restarted. In some cases it simply means that you won't have the security upgrade. That would be typical of a production host running Debian Stable. So that may be acceptable for you. (But in other cases such as Unstable/Testing a restart is often required in order to complete the upgrade. In some other cases the running daemon really needs to be restarted in order to work with the new environment around it.) If you are doing this then you really want to run 'checkrestart' (from the debian-goodies package) on a regular basis and deal with what it reports. Because otherwise the daemons may be vulnerable to security vulnerabilities that were fixed by the upgrade and installed but never restarted to take effect. Good luck! Re: Botched python upgrade mangled my system--- HELP!
Charles Blair wrote: I am running debian 6.0.6 on a Toshiba laptop that is approximately two years old. You should consider keeping your machine updated with the latest security upgrades. Debian 6.0.7 is current for your system. You should also consider upgrading to Debian 7 Wheezy at some point. If you were upgraded to Debian 7 Wheezy then you could have installed python3 and gotten 3.2.3 from precompiled packages. The command python --version reported 2.6.x. I wanted to upgrade to 3.3.2, so I did the following things, some of which were apparently mistakes. (1) I downloaded the .tgz for 3.3.2. from python.org, typed ./configure, make, and make install. This did not seem to produce any serious warnings. That isn't unreasonable. Seems fairly normal. Note that /usr/bin/python would be the system python. If you only did ./configure with no options then the make install would have installed your newly compiled program in /usr/local/bin/python and there would have been no conflict. (2) python --version said I was still using 2.6.x, But this is where you may have become confused. If you are using bash as your command shell then it would have hashed the path to python at /usr/bin/python. In that situation it would have continued to use that path even if a new binary showed up in PATH in /usr/local/bin ahead of it. (I think. IIRC anyway.) Therefore you may have installed the new python but continued to use the old one in that particular shell window. The bash command to instruct it to forget previous the cache of paths is 'hash -r'. After doing this the shell will once again search for the command and will find it in /usr/local/bin. $ hash -r I am assuming that you have /usr/local/bin in your PATH. so [probably a Big Mistake] I typed apt-get remove python I think I made the further mistake of saying go ahead when there was a warning. There are a *lot* of desktop packages that depend upon python being installed. On a headless server not so many. (The fail2ban package is the one very useful headless server package that requires python.) But on a desktop a lot of whizzy desktop things require python. When you remove python then all of those will be removed too. (3) Then I repeated step (1), expecting this would simply replace the older python with the newer one. Nope. It would install python at /usr/local/bin/python as it should do to keep your local installation separate from the system version. Also you don't really want to smash over the top of the system files in /usr/bin. That method leads to madness. Note that if you were in the 'staff' group then you would be able to run make install as yourself, not as root, and it would be able to install into the /usr/local tree. I think that is a much safer way of operating then running # make install or sudo make install as root. As root an error (or attack) in the makefile could crawl out of /usr/local and smash over your system version. At this point, python --version was still saying 2.6.x, but python3 --version said 3.3.2. Right. If you had said: $ type python python is hashed (/usr/bin/python) Then it would have been obvious. Then 'hash -r' and repeat. $ hash -r $ type python python is /usr/local/bin/python However, after shutting down my machine, it became clear that Something Bad had happened. Your machine booted okay though. So you can fix it. (Bad #1) after entering username and password, I get tty instead of graphics. Right. GNOME was removed when you removed python. I assume that you were running GNOME 2 before. (You said you were running Debian 6 Squeeze.) Simply install GNOME again. (Bad #2) the wireless connection has stopped working. Oops. Both NetworkManager and WICD need python. That will make this somewhat more interesting. But you can still recover from it relatively easily. Do not despair! :-) There are probably other Bad Things as well, but I decided at this point to ask the experts for help. Two things I will note first for reference. * /var/log/dpkg.log is a file that tracks what dpkg does on your system. You can work through it and determine exactly what packages were removed. * /var/backups/dpkg.status* is a set of backup copies of the status file. This is an even better source of info to work through what was installed so that you can install it again. But it is a big problem because it is training people to fall prey to phishing attacks. Bob Thanks for the link. I can see that gdm3 is still evil. But I should note that the dialog I got there was not the root/admin password prompt being appropriately disparaged in that bug report. It looked kind of like the Execute command dialog that you often find in the desktop manager. Except that it had a popup menu for selecting the user to run as. And the dialog was not very wide, so the blank for the command didn't really inspire one to enter a long chell command. Very confusing. At first I thought it was a clumsy password trap, and was wondering what I had run in my admin account to let something like that in. I don't connect to the general web, don't run anything that shouldn't need admin privileges in that account. But on looking more closely, I recognized that, at least in the dialog presented, it was prompting for a command, not a password, and that where it was saying root was in a popup list. So I concluded that it was a poorly designed generalized run-as dialog. Can't find any menu entry that I might have dragged it up from, I don't recall running a command from the shell that might have brought it up. And I didn't think to take a screen shot of it. Am I getting old, or am I just distracted? Maybe I should win the lottery so I can afford to write a decent *dm for XFCE. I see that I am still confusing the display manager with the desktop manager. (I think the gnome project is confused about that, too. :-/ ) So, alternatives to gdm3 include kdm (pulling in all of that), lightdm (another gnome project), slim (which is the one I was using before, but was removed during upgrade), wdm (afterstep fun stuff), ldm (properly tunneled, in theory, need to look at that), and xdm (a bit too light for modern tastes).
