Re: packages status

2014-01-06 Thread Diogene Laerce

Is there a simple way to get the list of packages installed since the fresh
installation of deby ?

How long ago was your fresh installation? There are backups of the
dpkg package status kept in /var/backups that go back a week. And if
you have a system backup you could retrieve older copies going back as
far as your backups. Those files list what is installed on the
machine and could be used to make this deduction.

   $ zcat /var/backups/dpkg.status.6.gz | grep-dctrl -s Package -n "install ok
installed" | sort > /tmp/list.prev

   $ grep-status -s Package -n "install ok installed" | sort > /tmp/list.now

   $ comm -3 /tmp/list.prev /tmp/list.now

Thanks a lot Mister Bob, it worked like a charm ! The install was nearly
fresh, just 6 or 7 days and I didn't know those dctrl-tools commands so
double thanks again. ;)

I start a script with those right now. :)

Better to separate out the top level packages and install those (which
marks them as manual) and let them automatically installed their
dependencies (which marks them as automatic) rather than install
everything (which marks the libs as manual too). Meaning that those
libraries will never be offered for "autoremove" later when they are
no longer needed due to upgrades.

You can use the 'apt-mark' command to list and change these.

   apt-mark showmanual
   apt-mark showauto
   apt-mark auto libfoopackagename

Thanks for the explanation. ;)

I didn't think of that the first time but thanks to you I have now the final
list of manually installed packages.

Though, I had a few packages in the list which I did remove manually cos
I don't use them : swat, rpcbind, nfs-common, nfs-kernel-server and
minissdpd

and that still appeared in the list so I used : "comm -1 -3" instead. :)

You didn't say so I don't know why you wanted to know the package
differences.

I would like to automate the installation process from scratch to a django
development platform. But forgot to note every modification from the
very beginning. ^^ :)

I wanted to mention the above so that if possible you
could still track packages installed manually versus packages
installed automatically as a dependency. It will keep the
"autoremove" functionality working for later as the system is upgraded
and keep things cleaner.

Thanks for that and for all again, it will definitely help for the
future developments.

I think it's unlikely that it would run a 64-bit system. Does it have a

there are no text msg
sometime it reboot, other times it stop

this morning, trying loadlin.exe, it seems that linux loading is successful,
when control passed to linux, problem arise
I see "Uncompressing Linux(image?) OK, booting Linux"
(I can't remember exact words)
after showing these words, it stops,
I have to press power button of front panel of computer case to shutdown

it seems that kernel options, rather than grub/lilo option, holds key
to my problem

[HITB-Announce] HITB Magazine Issue 10 Out Now

2014-01-06 Thread Hafez Kamal

Issue #10 is now available!

Hello readers and welcome to the somewhat overdue Issue 010 of HITB
Magazine. As they say, better late than never!

Since the last issue, we've also changed the HITB Security Conference
Call for Papers submission guidelines to now require speakers to submit
a research 'white paper' to accompany their talk. The first round of
papers came to us via #HITB2013KUL in October and thankfully we now have
loads of AWESOME CONTENT! We've got so much good stuff we could have
probably put together two issues even!

With the new change to the CFP submissions, we've decided to also change
our publication schedule for 2014 to a 'per HITB SecConf' release cycle.
This means you can expect a new magazine approximately every 6 months
which we'll release alongside a HITB Security event.

What else do we have planned for 2014? Well next year also marks the 5th
year anniversary of the HITB Security Conference in Amsterdam and we're
celebrating it in traditional HITB fashion - by adding something special
to our line up - our first ever HITB hacker expo! A 3-day IT security
and technology exhibition unlike anything that's been done before. Think
RSA or Mobile World Congress meets Makerfaire with a generous touch of
HITBSecConf thrown in for good measure. What exactly does that mean?
Imagine an area dedicated to hackerspaces; makers with 3D printers,
laser cutters and other fabrication goodies coupled with TOOOL's Lock
Picking Village, HITB and Mozilla's HackWEEKDAY developer hackathon, our
Capture the Flag 'live hacking' competition and more all wrapped around
a 3-day exhibition with Microsoft and Google as the main anchors. The
cost to attend? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! Yup, entrance to HITB Haxpo will be
F-R-E-E! Head over to http://haxpo.nl for further details and to
register (we've got a new registration system too!)

On behalf of The HITB Editorial Team, I hope you enjoy this special end
of year issue we've put together and we wish you all a very Happy New
Year, and have a great time ahead!

The motherboard have not build-in video card

I have been trying loadlin.exe this morning,

it seems a waste of time

how does it differ from plugging a hard disk with wheezy?

*-persistent*.rules should *not* be modified because changes may create
problems with upgrades (or later package install (they are automagically
created by *-generator scripts). Instead create a rule that is processed
before /lib/udev/rules.d/60-persistent-input.rules and targets that
exact device (the IR device).
udev rules are processed in lexical order and /etc/udev/rules.d/ have
precedence over rules in /lib/udev/rules.d (which has precedence over
rules in /run/udev/rules.d)

e.g. /etc/udev/rules.d/59-irda-custom.rules

(I like to put "custom" into the name of customized rules and config
files to make it easier to backup the modifications).

LiveCDs (and non-live, install CDs) do not use lilo. The "mem=xM" in
this instance is used by syslinux.

Make sure "mem" is followed by a real figure seen by the system in the
POST. That figure must be followed by "M". Any variation will *not* have
an effect.

Shared?

I though you had removed the AGP card which had *built-in* video RAM and
are using the on-board video which uses System RAM (??)

Note also that the amount of RAM used by an AGP video card and the size
of the aperture are different. The aperture must be at least as large as
the amount of video RAM (*if* your BIOS has an AGP aperture setting).

> Can I run dmidecode from woody?

I don't know. I suspect you have an "install" CD for Woody, so you'd
have to do an installation before dmidecode would be available - which
is why I suggested using a live CD instead (boot and use instead of boot
-> install -> reboot -> use).

Should you install Woody?
IMO no.
You *will* have problems with Woody.
It probably *won't* support your hardware.
Stick to Wheezy.

No. While you 'can' "install" it to a Hard Drive it's best used as a
Live CD. NOTE: it's Debian "derived", not Debian.

When I suggested Knoppix:-
;you'd been asked about the details of your mb and BIOS settings but

If Knoppix can't boot I'd be very surprised.
Is the Knoppix CD corrupted? (do an md5sum check)
Which boot parameters did you use? (don't just hit Enter and pray).

If "knoppix 2 mem=xM" doesn't work try "knoppix 2 mem=xM no=acpi" or
"knoppix 2 mem=xM acpi=force". Use the F1 - F4 keys at the boot screen
to read all the Knoppix boot parameters.

Make sure that "x" is an actual real value in MB as shown by POST.

>

I don't know. Woody might have had dmidecode, you'll have to install it
and find out.
I would never have suggested you installed in the first place. It's
probably too old to support your mb, you'll have a lot of problems with
the packages as it hasn't been maintained for years - and you'll have to
change sources.list to point at the archived repository.

It's possible you don't understand the difference between a Live CD and
a "non-live" installation CD. A Live CD just boots and runs - you don't
even need a hard drive.
Woody is an install CD. You would need to spend at least half-an-hour
(trying to) install it before you could use dmidecode. IMO that would be
a waste of time.

Kind regards

Connot load Wheezy in a "virgin" desktop -- long

2014-01-06 Thread Ken Heard
I apologize in advance for the length of this post. Since however I do not
know what information is necessary to determine why this installation
failed I am including everything which I have the least suspicion may be
contributing to the failure.

To begin I describe the essentials of my recently purchased custom designed
desktop. It consists of a Gigabyte GA-Z87N mainboard, the Z87N being one
of Intel's latest Haswell chipsets. Integrated in that processor is
Intel's HD graphics 4600, the mainboard having the required graphics
outputs. Two 2 terabyte hard drives are designated as a RAID1.

I started out with the intention of installing only the basic system,
thereby shortening reinstalment processes if for any reason I needed to
start the installer over again -- such as to change the partitioning. At
this stage for example I tried to install UEFI. Since I was unsuccessful I
reverted to the standard BIOS. My experience trying to install UEFI will
be the subject of another thread.

Since Dec 31 when I started this process I have lost count of the number of
false starts. My guess is that since then I ended up initiating the
installer about fifteen times.

When I thought everything was ready to install the desktop environment (DE)
and other things I tried to do so manually by installing xserver-xorg and
xfce meta packages. This method was unsuccessful. Examination of log files
indicated that much was missing, including whatever package contains
startx. (Running startx in a virtual terminal returned the message
"command not found".)

I then decided to allow the installer to install the DE and other selected
tasks; to do so however required initiating the installer once again -- in
fact twice. First I set up in the partition section of the installer with
xfs file type in most of my partitions with lilo as the boot loader, but
the installer would not install lilo. (Does xfs still require lilo instead
of grub?)

The second time I used the ext4 file type with grub as the boot loader.
The boot process aborted with a "failed" message. To see what would
happen I typed Control-D to resume the boot. In due course the xfce login
window appeared. After entering my user name and password the monitor went
blank. At this point the computer was totally unresponsive to any input.
I had to reboot.

This boot ran to the point where the line containing Control-D appeared.
This time I entered the root password in order to examine the output of the
dmesg command, various log files and the information which scrolls by on
the monitor while the OS is loading -- and perhaps glean some idea of why
the DE would not load.

The first problem encountered was that something was detecting and enabling
the Logitech USB optical mouse many times, even to the point of
interrupting other commands and their outputs. I solved that problem -- at
least temporarily -- by disconnecting it. In a virtual terminal it is
anyway not needed.

The first part of the dmesg output which scares me reads as follows.
-

Yeah, that’s the beauty of Linux, everyone can freely choose their tools.
I did cover why privoxy is not ideal in my blog though (and why it

Hello Muntasim!

From your description I'm guessing this might be a port collision
problem. "debian-tor" is a special user you can create to run the tor
process and it defaults the socks host to port 9050. Vidalia is a
different software which AFAIK has been discontinued and runs its own
tor instance. If both are running and configured to use the same socks
host, the second one wouldn't be able to handle the port which is in use
by a different process.

So the question is, how did you install tor?

my first problem is successfully logging in with sftp-only and chroot'ing
in place. AFAIK - ACL's would only come into play afterward.

Sven, TX much for your reply...

proftpd:
1) wheezy does not have an sftp module
2) proftpd appears to rely on openssh for sftp, so appears to add no value.
3) IF proftpd did provide working sftp - appears that it can not share port
22 w/ openssh (which i do still need for full-access users unrelated to
SFTP).

scponly: does not appear to be provided in wheezy !?!? can't find out
why

rssh/rush:
1) not sure what is: diff rssh rush (searches come up worthless to answer
this)
2) i haven't used rssh in a very long time - i guess i have to dig into it
again to see if it will allow chroot'ing with group "w" perms.
3) "mixed security record" is a big concern.

Uninstalled fglrx drivers. Now laptop heats and fan is always noisy.

I updated some packages on my debian wheezy 7 (64 bit) using the command
apt-get -u upgrade and after a reboot, I was on a blank screen. So I booted
into recovery and ran startx, which was again a blank screen.

So I uninstalled the fglrx drivers and I was able to boot back on gnome.
But now the laptop is getting heated and its fan is always noise. The same
does not happens on my windows partition.

The laptop is Dell Latitude N5010 with ati Raedon HD 5400 graphics card.

Uname -r gives me: 3.2.0-4-amd64

Can somebody help me in this case? Should I upgrade my kernel and install
fglrx again? Or is there something I am missing with open source drivers?

I have some good and bad news to report

I plug a disk that has Windows 98 to update BIOS
the disk happen to have Linux, so I boot it
and it boots OK, it's woody and use kernel 2.2
I run the top command , it correctly reports about 1 G memory
and I also starts X window

bad news is woody no longer has practical use for me

Can I run dmidecode from woody?

How to assign a persistent device name to an infra-red receiver?

2014-01-06 Thread Ernest Adrogué
Hi there

I have configured lirc to use /dev/input/event4 but it turns out this device
name is assigned to a different input device every time the computer boots,
thus preventing lirc from working properly.

For example, right now the receiver is on /dev/input/event5. I guess I have
to write a udev rule for this but when I look at
/lib/udev/rules.d/60-persistent-input.rules I am a little confused. Do I
have to modify this file directly, copy it to /etc/ and edit that copy, run
some script...?

I have said "mem=" option doesn't work
Its result is nearly the same as I don't enter boot option "mem="
After reading (loading) kernel, the machine reboot
(apparently it has memory problem)

according lili.conf manual, "mem=" is passed to kernel by lilo

I have tested "mem=" with 2 Linux installation CD
Will Live CD make difference?

I can't boot Linux, so I can't run dmidecode

I use a AGP card, so I have not thought shared video memory might cause trouble
I will check now

That's what I would do, though you might want to check bug reports for
"critical" packages, to be on the safe side. Hopefully the bug will be
fixed soon and you can reinstall apt-listbugs.

Actually, after looking at
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=734256,
what you could do is to remove apt-listbugs, install ruby1.9.1, and then
reinstall apt-listbugs.

I've never used evernote-mode and I don't use Ruby, but
"apt-file search RbConfig" leads me to suggest that you might try
installing a newer version of Ruby. (e.g. ruby1.9.1)

I will rest for a while and
then I will try Knoppix

for the last few days nearly all my energy is put to get it to work
(and many nice guys help a lot)
sometime I consider whether it's worthy
the machine costs me about 30 US dollars (plus a lot of labor)

Bug is in ruby-debian which does not provide debian_version.so for ruby 1.8

You may comment out everything in /etc/apt.conf.d/10apt-listbugs until it
 is fixed.

OK thanks, I found it...

Any idea how long this bug will last? Or how to have any info when it
will be corrected?

Thank you

Have you googled the issue?
e.g googling on 'P4 memtest' (without the quotes.) has some interesting

You could download an old version of a Debian Installer CD from about
the time your PC was popular and see if it boots.
