(même si je me

console :

Configuration file `/etc/default/rcS'
== File on system created by you or by a script.
== File also in package provided by package maintainer.
What would you like to do about it ? Your options are:
Y or I : install the package maintainer's version
N or O : keep your currently-installed version
D : show the differences between the versions
Z : start a shell to examine the situation
The default action is to keep your current version.
*** rcS (Y/I/N/O/D/Z) [default=N] ? Write failed: Broken pipe

Je me suis reconnecté, puis j'ai relancé la commande :
apt-get dist-upgrade

J'obtiens l'erreur suivante :
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11: Resource
temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is
another process using it?

-rw-r- 1 root root 0 Apr 2 10:37 /var/lib/dpkg/lock

pas me dédoubler ;)

| dualbus@debian:~$ time timeout 5 sleep 10
|
| real 0m5.059s
| user 0m0.000s
| sys 0m0.000s

horas, solo debes hacer:

| timeout 8h tu-comando-aqui parametros...

Hum... ¡normal!

dist-upgrade.

donfierro:~# apt-get remove libgnutls26
Leyendo lista de paquetes... Hecho

mejoran y he buscado paquetes retenidos sin éxito.

Tampoco dpkg --configure -a reporta paquetes pendientes de configuración.

Muchas gracias,

mejoran y he buscado paquetes retenidos sin éxito.

Tampoco dpkg --configure -a reporta paquetes pendientes de configuración.

Muchas gracias,

RE: Debian and Unicode line drawing

Hello,

Thanks for your replay,

I always use Consolas because it is very similar to the Monaco Mac font which i
just love :) The missing chars are sometimes displayed as an empty box but it
is not a problem for me.

I have tried the dpkg-reconfigure locales and console-setup. The second package
was not installed so I installed it and configured but it is still not working
properly with some software. Mc, irssi, tmux and other works fine but
dpkg-reconfgure displays and .

I have also tried other options in PuTTY but it always display the
and  rows.

 Hello,

I am using PuTTY, Maybe it's not a new software but it works properly
with other distributions (CentOS/Fedora etc.) that uses Unicode by
 default.

I noticed that every frame in default Debian configuration in PuTTY
is displayed as the rows of p and qq instead of
those frame ASCII characters. PuTTY and every of my Debian
installation is set to use Unicode UTF-8 encoded characters so ncurses
etc. should use those characters to display frames instead of this
vt100 escape code and p/qqq after it.
PuTTY and KiTTY is expecting this and not those vt100 compatible
characters. PuTTY/KiTTY can use those vt100 charasters without any
problems but not in the Unicode mode. In this mode it expects
 normal UTF-8 characters.

I can make ncurses applications use Unicode characters with the
variable export NCURSES_NO_UTF8_ACS=1 set in my .bashrc.
But not all applications uses ncurses. For example dpkg-reconfigure
still uses those vt100 escape code and ppp/q
characters. How can i make it Unicode compatible?

I'm not sure if I can help or not, but here's what I do know.
 On the Debian side, use

 dpkg-reconfigure locales

 and

 dpkg-reconfigure console-setup

Make sure the default locale is UTF-8. (For example, en_US.UTF-8.)
Make sure UTF-8 is selected as the character mapping in console-setup.
 Then shutdown and reboot.

On the PuTTY side, make sure that PuTTY is expecting UTF-8 characters.
In the PuTTY configuration dialog, select

 Window - Translation

Then, in the drop-down box under Remote character set, select UTF-8.
Also, make sure that the Use Unicode line drawing code points radio
button is selected on the same screen.

Assuming that you are running PuTTY under Windows, many Windows fonts
are incomplete. Most of the fixed-width fonts are missing some of the
characters that are used in manual pages. As a result, a hollow box
will appear in their place. On my Windows machine at work, the only
installed font that I could find that would display a hyphen correctly
is Consolas. An internet post I read also suggested DejaVu Sans Mono,
but I couldn't try it because it is not installed in my machine.
 In PuTTY configuration, select

 Window - Appearance

Then change the font. Experiment with different fonts. Display a
man page that has hyphens, such as

 man fstab

and see which fonts display a hyphen and which display a box. Go
with one which displays the hyphen correctly. Maybe this will help
 your other problems.

Joe,

Yes, that is what happened; I couldn't get a package. I tried a couple times

document the steps) and it worked.

It seems like the mirror I was directed to what not functioning correctly.

Retrieving that particular session is probably not possible now, but for
the future, if you want to record your terminal activity there are
several solutions.

On the other hand, if you can't reproduce the problem chances are it was
either transient (can happen, especially when networks are involved, and
seems to be the case here), or user error (e.g. user typed in wrong
command).

Which is why a copy-paste of what you see in the terminal is so
important ;)

Kind regards,

Other things works correctly ( I have some cgi stuff which runs

had difficulties to enable them, too ), only redmine does not.
I guess that I should enable something to allow apache to manage ruby
stuff, but I have no idea about what, or how.

Seems like problems related to D-Bus. Either it's not started at all
(check 'ps aux') or your session is not setup with the necessary
privileges to access D-Bus. How do you start i3?

I use lightdm. It starts i3. In /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf I have set the option
'user-session=i3' so that by default i3 is selected in the session
menu of lightdm
and not xfce, or default xsession.

Question about firmware in Debian packaging system

2014-04-02 Thread Paul E Condon
Some time during March I made a fresh install of Wheezy on old HP
hardware using netinst v. 7.4 (the most recent version, I think).
During the install, I remember reading a warning message to the
effect that I might need to install non-free firmware and/or drivers.
I don't remember the exact wording, and there was no opportunity
to do anything but either 'go-back' or 'continue' , so I selected
'continue' and the rest of the install completed without error.
The issue of possible non-free (soft|firm)ware has remained un-resolved
in my mind until today when I looked into what was installed in Aptitude.
In Aptitude I see a number of firmware packages and none of them are
installed, so apparently they were not needed, so why was the warning
issued? Is there a place where this is all explained? Is there a generic
set of drivers that usually work or at least can possibly work. And I was
lucky enough to have them work, or what? I'm curious.

TIA

We know that it's not dbus, but IIRC, gconf, keyring, notify, and other

I will just run ps aux | grep command to see if they are started correctly or

You explicitly pipe mrt's output to tee, which writes it to the given

If you don't want mail from cron, make sure that there's nothing writen

why do you use tee? Redirect the output directly to the log-file instead.

No. First, you redirect stderr to a duplicate of stdout (when it's still
unchanged) and redirect
stdout afterwards. Do it the other way round:

Oh, apparently you use sudo to start nm-applet.

You really shouldn't do that. All the D-Bus and GConf related error
messages etc are because you are trying to start it as root from within
a user session.

I'd probably try with another desktop environment. Maybe it's actually
an issue with i3 or more specifically i3bar not showing the notification

Could you please provide a reference for the double invocation? As far
as I remember this is not the case with most DMs (and is quite easy to
 test).

I'll back down on that. ~/.profile tests for $BASH_VERSION, which is
empty. Therefore $HOME/.bashrc isn't sourced through ~/.xsessionrc.
Is this because dash is the shell being used, I wonder?

It's possible you may want different paths on the console and in X.

And it's also possible one might not ;)

It's something to be aware of though.

It's also possible that portions of your customised .profile relate
only to things relevant to the console and which are not needed or
  wanted in X.

 Which would that be?

An environment variable, a command such a 'mail -s test someone', for
example. It was a general point which was less about what exactly was
extracted and used but a relection on doing something which had no
purpose. Getting the path from ~/.profile is surely the one and only
reason for sourcing ~/.profile in ~/.xsessionrc. What need is there to
pull in anything else?

Four lines. Compare with the single line

export PATH=$HOME/bin:$PATH

in ~/.xsessionrc. The configuration is aimed exactly at the target. It
gives you what you want without having to reuse an existing file which
  has a different purpose.

 Which purpose is that?

It's described in bash(1). But the point could be made that the path
could be put in ~/.mypathforx and that file sourced from /.xsessionrc.
This would negate the previous points. But then one would have to ask
why bother sourcing a file when the path could be put directly into
~/.xsessionrc.

And, if we read /etc/X11/Xsession.d/40x11-common_xsessionrc we see

#Source user defined xsessionrc (locales and other environment variables)

Is your entry a locale or an environment variable?

I didn't know it was forbidden to use that file for anything else :)

It is not forbidden to start a window manager from it either but it is
highly inadvisable to do so. For other commands - caveat emptor. :)

It would be good if the benefits of sourcing .profile from .xesessionrc
compared to putting the path into .xesessionrc were explained.

Indeed does seem to be an issue. Cc'ed the listmaster, perhaps they can
  clue us in.
Unfortunatly clairvoyance is no requirement for being a listmaster. Without
some details, like the subscribed mailaddress, the list, maybe a timestamp.
We won't be able to say anything.

 Alex - Debian Listmaster

Yes Alex, I agree and I apologize for the dearth of information on my part. My
address is craig @ gtek. biz (spaces intentional), and I am only subscribed to
the
debian-user list. Unfortunately I can only give a broad idea of time. I had
sent a
message asking for help with a “Hash Sum mismatch problem” on 29 March at 11:10
-0500. I received a reply and replied to it a couple of hours later, at 13:18
-0500.

I know I received a few list emails after that, but I wasn't able to provide
anything useful to those so I deleted them. This is all on my main system using
mutt. On Sunday morning (30 March), after having not received anything since the
afternoon before I logged into the email web interface to see if there was
anything there. Nothing new, and I cleaned that inbox out as well. This reply is
directly to you since you must have CC'd me in to your reply. I have also CC'd
the
list. I hope that is acceptable.

So the best I can tell you, timeframe-wise, is that the last message received
would have come in probably early evening CDT, say around midnight GMT.

That being said, I see Mr Queue has reported that the mailing list has been
listed
with senderscore. Hopefully that will get the issue resolved, but I am willing
to
do anything to help, with one caveat. I am at work right now so I may be a bit
slow in responding.

Thanks!
Craig

Of course, the official linux client from google should probably drop one
  of these months.

Really?! Last time I had a discussion on G+ they were of the mindset
that they wanted 3rd parties to develop for it, after all the toolkit
was released for that purpose. Do you have a cite for this claim?

I got that sense from reading a lot of articles from recent years, like

Re: Unable to start nm-applet

2014-04-02 Thread Anubhav Yadav
Oh, apparently you use sudo to start nm-applet.

You really shouldn't do that. All the D-Bus and GConf related error
messages etc are because you are trying to start it as root from within
 a user session.

I'd probably try with another desktop environment. Maybe it's actually
an issue with i3 or more specifically i3bar not showing the notification
 icon of nm-applet.

And yes xfce, and nm-applet is already there in the xfce4 panel. And
then If I run nm-applet again in a terminal in xfce session, it adds another
nm-applet there on the xfce panel. So I guess yes, something is wrong with
i3

2014-04-02 Thread Anubhav Yadav
I'll back down on that. ~/.profile tests for $BASH_VERSION, which is
 empty. Therefore $HOME/.bashrc isn't sourced through ~/.xsessionrc.
Is this because dash is the shell being used, I wonder?

echo $BASH_VERSION
4.2.37(1)-release

So it's not empty.

Besides, one can use the preferred image as well:

Disagree - most probably would want testing or SID. Stable is well
suited for someone installing a server. Most people would want
modern versions of software especially ones coming from XP. Sooner
or later they won't be happy with the behind versions of stable
when on a desktop or laptop.

And sooner or later they will no longer be complete newbies and can
 consider updrading or using backports.

Stephen, you do not like Xfce4. Nor do I. But that is not a reason
why it should not be the default. Other people like it.

And for what it is worth, I can just about live with but don't
strongly like Xfce4, but I strongly dislike GNOME.

Surely the PopCon results should determine that, no? I doubt very much
that the luddites wanting a 1990s desktop metaphor are the majority
of users. People are using touch screens, tablets and modern laptops
these days. Not all want to use Ubuntu, unless Debian wants to make it
so difficult for them, that they must. shrug

I've used Xfce in the past, also many other DE, Window Mangers too.

Well as the article states it's not a high priority - probably because
of Ubuntu One (the latter is my opinion). That's the sense I got over a
year ago directly from the Google Drive Team on G+. They preferred 3rd

Mind you, I wouldn't mind be proven wrong :)

It is when ~/.profile is sourced from ~/.xsessionrc. The testing
procedure is available on request but any response from me may be
very slow to arrive due to the deep thought I am giving as to why
'export PATH=$HOME/bin:$PATH' in ~/.xsessionrc should not be the
the definitive, untroublesome, uncomplicated and trustworthy way
of getting a path set with lightdm.

If you or anyone else have any thoughts on this it would be most

Electronic mail is rapidly becoming a toy communication system. How many
people would tolerate their usual postal services (Royal Mail in my

The question is partly rhetorical but if anyone can formulate a response
which does not express a fear of spam there are bonus points to be
