Re: crontab no ejecuta nada
I just use the stock pulse install and pavucontrol. you seem to think that reinstalling pulse wd be a good idea. cd you tell me more of yr thinking on this? i see a lot of stuff on the internet about debian+pulse problems and so am hesitant. ]Did you configure your sound card to have X number of speakers AND mike (mono or stereo) input? how do i configure the sound card? Did you run alsamixer to be sure it wasn't muted?? yes Pulse rides on top of alsa, so if alsa has the mike muted, pulse can not overrule alsa. Package upgrades can break things once in awhile. what kind of upgrade cd have caused pulse microphone to suddenly stop working? thanks again for helping me. No problem! I've used pulse for sometime. and with some strange audio adapters. First, again pulse is on top of alsa, so if alsa fails, pulse fails harder. Second, plain-jane audio uses that work with alsa, works just peachy with alsa, unless you start using settings like .asound which call directly to alsa, then pulse is shoved under the bus. No setting files at all when using pulse. Third, pavucontrol will show you your audio sources live. If there is sound input then the input tab page will show the audio level with a volume level meter. IF you see no movement, then sound is not appearing to pulse for you to use. You can use that to set the volume level too. IF your application uses OSS then there is a pulse module to convert OSS to alsa/pulse. OR, launch your program in a terminal window with padsp program name and it will FORCE sound to be directed to alsa/pulse. Kino will only run now with the command: padsp kino Same with output sound, you should have configured your outputs with the configuration tab, and then select the output device on the playback page. I have USB stereo output headphone with mono mike input. And, I have a USB 7.1 audio device which is connected to a 7.1 speaker setup. So, when I playback through a program, like VLC, I can change between the two ON THE FLY! with pavucontrol playback tab. I just click and change. I have my onboard sound device turned OFF in the bios, as I don't use it. If you use your's make sure it is ON in the bios. This should be enough to have pulse and alsa setup and ready to go. Again, if you see no sound level, during playback or recording, something is muted in alsa or the stream is in another format. If it's Skype then google up on what module needs to be added to pulse. My apologies, I forgot that you need a newer version of cciss_vol_status than present in Squeeze/Wheezy. For that I had imported 1.10-1 into our local repository, which works just fine without any adjustments / backporting. However, apart from that, Claudio provides good advice. If your iLO works reliably, that is. I had several systems where every once in a while it simply didn't react anymore / worked too slowly and had to be reset. And last I checked there wasn't even a viable patch to remedy that, but that might have changed in the meantime. Of course you need a new enough iLO to monitor disks, so at least in my environment I cannot fully rely on this (yet). The ISP's concern is (or should be) the customers who allow sending of spam without the knowledge of the users of those computers. These same incompetent customers are now all going to start encrypting the usernames and passwords used for sending email? Most MUAs can already encrypt the password (and sometimes the userid) if it is saved on the disk. Thunderbird does this, for instance. I assume Outlook does also, although I haven't checked it. I should add the malware would also have to know the MTA the userid/password are for. Again, not impossible by any means - but just one more thing the malware has to discover. I think that once you get to discussing the capabilities of the malware it acknowledges that port 587 presents no more problems to the malware than port 25; it simply depends on how good the malware is. Which, as I originally queried, brings into question the efficacy of ISPs mandating its use. I'll not ask for ISP facts and figures to show how good port 587 is for them. Yes, it does - again, Port 587 requires a login - which adds a huge layer of complexity to the malware. Sending via port 587 is MUCH harder. Hackers take the easy route; as long as Port 25 is available, they will send through it. If Port 25 ever should become unavailable to a large percentage of users, they may have to take the hard route. They shouldn't be used for anything mission critical, that's what stable is for. No, i will not comply with this. The testing must be in state, where it must to boot (except some boot options tweaks) by default. I think, that nobody here will complain if some of software/services on testing doesn't work, but computer must to boot! Can you point to a document where such a commitment has been made or such a criterion has been decided? You've just touched my hotpoint, Tom Sorry! :) The post that got me kicked off the Fedora developer list was the one a bit more than two years ago where I questioned Poettering's engineering qualifications specifically because he lead the putsch. (I'm apparently no longer on the auto-mod list over there, but I don't really care any more.) Kicked off or moderated? (It would mean the same to me because I'd unsubscribe...). I remember some threads where you were arguing about some Fedora software policies (one about grubby?). Engineering by putsch is simply not what qualified engineers do to users who have not agreed, up front and beforehand, to be fodder for the putsch. Yeah, when we agree to use Sid or Rawhide, we agree to a certain amount of being guinea pigs, but this is a level or two beyond that, even. I run rawhide on my laptop and the only systemd breakage that I've experienced since Fedora 15 has been nfs. X and Gnome have broken more often over the years... I'm trying to remember systemd breakages in Debian but it's late and I'm tired and the only one that comes to mind is the fact that systemd doesn't respect sysvinit tmpfs settings in /etc/default/. I suppose that if Fedora used a similar environment file in its equivalent, /etc/sysconfig/, there might have been an upstream solution. As it is, Debian users will have to use a drop-in to over-ride the systemd .mount that they want to change, unless they write a unit to use the Debian environment file. Being a little less metaphorical, the shift from sysv-init to anything as comprehensive as systemd necessarily breaks APIs en-masse. The parts that are in the specs may be manageable, but it is known that in systems as complex as OSses, there are more implicit linkages than any single person or any committee can plan for. Implicit linkages are where the API providers' understandings and the API users' understandings have some common base that is not recognized as needed to be written down. But when you expand the reach of the API or the user domain, you discover that the common understanding is not there after all, and then programmers start engineering by rumor and superstition. Both the API and the user domain were not just drastically expanded, but also shifted in this case. Uhm, by shift, I mean that the focus has changed significantly. Systemd is not a replacement for sysv-init. It is a set of brand-new functionality that sysv-init was never intended to implement. And it kind-of-sort-of adds the sysv-init functionality as the spoonful of sugar that is supposed to make the medicine go down. Woops, that's more metaphor. Yes, systemd replaces sysvinit's functionality (booting up) plus extra functionality. One of the symptoms of this kind of implicit linkage is where the end users end up saying, well, the docs say ordering shouldn't matter, but in this particular case it does. (See several recent threads for recent examples.) I think that you're referring to the network and network-online business. As I pointed out in that thread, the man page(s) showed that the OP's expectation/understanding was incorrect of the necessity of using Requires. Quite frankly, I found the reasoning obscure (systemd's not his) but the necessity of Requires as well as After or Before (I've forgotten which one the OP was using) was documented. The sort of changes being brought in by systemd are so sweeping that we cannot expect them all to be shaken out in the distro's experimental release, even if the agreement to be test users were to agree something to that extreme. So the stable users are going to experience downtime. Period. (I'm not going to bet one way or another as to whether Redhat, as a company, survives this. I will be surprised if it does not slow their profit margins down enough that the board members will be looking for scapegoats.) The real damage, we haven't really seen yet. I suppose that there'll be more problems in upgrades to jessie than for previous upgrades but that clean installs will be fine - as they seem to be for RHEL 7 (I haven't yet had a chance to use it on our

/dev/random
As many of you know, /dev/random is a source of random bits that are suitable for use in cryptographic analysis. The software supporting /dev/random collects random time data from monitoring events that are not generated by the functioning of the computer, but from something like the keystroke times of a human asking for help on this list. It differs from /dev/urandom in that /dev/random blocks and does not give any bits if there have not been enough keystrokes since the last call to replenish the supply of entropy in its entropy store. In contrast, /dev/urandom gives the number of bits requested quickly, but with no guarantee as to the quality of their randomness. Places where this distinction is discussed suggest that a user of /dev/random 'randomly' poke at the keys on his keyboard if he finds himself waiting for /dev/random to un-block and give the needed random bits. Some users of Debian are concerned about performing cryptographic analysis correctly and I wonder: Just how often do you have to poke at the keyboard? And when you do poke at it, about how many key presses do you make before you get the number of bits you requested? I'm wondering is this a event with which many Debianers are quite familiar, or is it more like something of a rare event that people know about, but most have never actually had it happen to them? Why do I ask?: Just wondering. Thanks for reading, and please reply with whatever experience you want to share.
