The kernels nouveau support does advance, but the X support does not. As I said less than 24 hours ago in another profanity laden post, I cannot run a new kernel on this wheezy install because the wheezy X is too old, and the miss-match between the X nouveau support and the kernels nouveau support is a display speed (freezing for 30 seconds at a time while the sound is stuttering 1/4 second on, 1/4 second off) killer, while the video when it does restart, runs at 20K frames a sec to catch up. So I am stuck with a 3.4-9amd64 kernel as the newest I can run and have a fighting chance of watching a news video from one of the mainsleaze sites. So I am waiting until Ubuntu 15.04.2 LTS or so, when the guys at linuxcnc might put together a distro I can use WITH more than 2G of memory. The 8g that isn't recognized in this machine, running a 32 bit non-pae kernel, puts me a gigabyte into swap in 24 hours, and we all know how fast that runs. Maybe create another partition, run that CNC program under windows so you can just install an nvidia driver to enjoy the Linux half?? My two GT-520 nvidia cards, with two gigs of vram apiece cost me about $70 each and today they would be cheaper still. They run great. Here's a great SECRET which I suppose I can reveal now. At RedHat, in 2000, they had one machine running Windows hidden back in the locked RedHat Hardware Approved testing room. It ran the automatic CD duplicator and labeling machine for the old Boxed Set. There was no Linux equivalent to run the software required for the machine. So, they ran Windows to GET THE JOB DONE. I see no crime there. So, if that is what it takes, install Windows for the CNC chores so you can enjoy Linux as the desktop. To me, it computes! Plus, you'll live longer! :) Ric [snip]. Unfortunately windows does not have, nor would it allow the sub 2 microsecond access time to the hardware that linux, with the appropriately RTAI patched kernel, does. There is no linuxcnc version ever, that runs on windows, and quite likely never will be such a beast. So to me, windows is a problem to which there is no solution. So run two copies of Linux in two separate partitions instead. Run one for cnc, and the other for desktop with all the graphics bells and whistles Nvidia can invent, and all the Nvidia drivers they supply. If you want a newer kernel for your desktop than cnc allows, run Wheezy for cnc in one partition and Jessie for desktop in another Ubuntu 15.04 won't be LTS. 14.04 is LTS. 16.04 will be LTS. And why can't you use more than 2G memory with Wheezy? I do! Or are you running 32 bit hardware and is that the problem? Question about login with user root
Hello. I have installed Debian 7.8 in a virtual machine. I have no problem to log in with my user, but I can not log with user root (in fact I could not sign even once with root). If you did, then you can run su - at a prompt and supply root's password. If you did NOT, then you need to run sudo -i and supply YOUR password to gain root access. Thanks in advance for your help. I have one of those 3 drive quick change cages that makes drive swaps a 20 second powerdown. Maybe by now the installer will work, wheezy's disk prep is the wheezy way or hit the road. The wheezy way is reserving 2x memory for swap the rest in one big assed /. And there is no way to prep a disk the way you want it, the disk isn't even recognized as haveing a previous partition table setup and ready formatted to ext4. Since I run my own web server on this machine, I consider the inability of keeping ALL its data in a separate partition as one aspect of security. But no, thats not the wheezy way. Yeah, I've had lots of people tell me it can be done, but no one, and no web page they've suggested I visit, ever provided a solution to the my way of the highway attitude of the installer. Now out of production a year, they were pure magic for what we wanted to do when they came out. Equipt by default with a single 2G stick. They of course aren't as busy as this one, and I have yet to see one of them using swap. Put that exact same kernel on this machine and its a gig into swap just sitting here overnight collecting the mail. The default kernel is purported to be a 32 bit-pae, but pae doesn't work. The claim is made that the 64 bit stuff is not as fast as the 32 bit is at operations critical to running dangerous machinery. A 64 bit kernel has not ever been successfully patched by the RTAI patches. The guys who know, consider .001 seconds as being the absolute maximum between detecting a problem and issuing a corrective action including stopping it dead it its tracks. My lathe for instance is running that loop in .00025 second repetitions. Nyquist considerations for a stable spindle servo drive the higher speed for stability there. Its my understanding that the xenomai patch does work, if the critical high speed stuff is offloaded to a control card such as mesanet makes. I have one of those cards in my lathes control box, and it works well and I intend to put one in my milling machines box, but its next upgrade is going to be replacing the 28 volt stepper motor supply with a 48 volt version which will allow it to move considerable faster. Thats already built, I just need to take a ladder up so I can reach the interface box, pull it down and rebuild it. That needs a warmer day so I can setup shop on the shop buildings front deck. customize ligthdm manager
Hi everybody, I want to enter from a local machine using lightdm manager, to a remote server using XDMCP. I do it with a thin client, I mean on a thin client I have the list of all servers running XDMCP. I want to do the same, from an old PC that I want to use as a simple terminal. unfortunatly, in the login window I have only local accounts on my local machine, is it possible to customize the login window of lightdm to allow access to a remote server running XDMCP? thanks for help best regards

The first result on a web search for lightdm xdmcp (no quotes) suggests to add [XDMCPServer] enabled=true to your /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf, then restart lightdm. NUC ervaringsverhaal
Hoi, Ik heb een paar dagen geleden een NUC gekocht, oftewel een klein Intel computertje ter grootte van een pak suikerklontjes, waarin ook nog een SSD past. Ik heb er 139 euro voor betaald. Dat is exclusief geheugen (ik betaalde 40 euro voor 4 GB), en SSD (ik betaalde 59 euro voor 120 GB), totaal 238 euro (incl btw). Er zat al een processor en Intel wifi/bluetooth in. In een andere configuratie kun je onder de 200 euro komen lijkt me. Het installeren van Jessie ging zonder problemen. De processor heet Celeron maar is best krachtig. Het viel me op dat hij virtualisatie ondersteund en uiteraard 64-bit. Hij is goed bruikbaar voor het weergeven van full-screen video in HD resolutie via HDMI en uiteraard voor kantoorwerk. Hij heeft voor video alleen HDMI, geen VGA. Er zijn HDMI naar DVI kabels, en ook schijnen er HDMI naar VGA converters te zijn, met dat laatste heb ik geen ervaring. Het apparaat gebruikt slechts 5,5 watt in idle, inclusief SSD, 4 GB RAM, muis, toetsenbord en wifi! (excl monitor). Tijdens het afspelen van full HD HTML5 video gebruikte hij tussen de 10,5 en 11,0 watt. Het ding heeft ook een nieuwe technologie genaamd Widi, een soort draadloze HDMI. Dat kende ik nog niet, geen idee of het werkt onder Linux. X11/Thinkpad T430: partially drops input from USB devices after resume
I am using my laptop (lenovo T430, debian testing) regularly in a docking station. The dock has a USB keyboard, USB mouse and monitor permanently attached. The laptops suspends from time to time, and _after_ resuming X11 or some other system component the input from USB mouse and keyboard to be dropped/ignored partially. Symptoms are that the cursor does not move with the mouse, however it will start moving again if I click any of the mouse buttons; or that the keyboard input is ignored until I hit some arbitrary keys very rapidly. The USB amnesia starts again if I leave the input device untouched for some seconds. The issue will not occur for newly connected devices or if I reconnect mouse/keyboard. The dock is not the issue as I can reproduce the phenomenon with a USB mouse directly connected to the laptop. Si no son muchos datos lo ideal son copias completas (te evitas de un montón de jaleo y disgustos posteriores al restaurar) pero un mes me parece mucho tiempo entre copia y copia. TrueType Hebrew fonts have stopped working in libreoffice writer
Hi, Some update seems to have badly broken Hebrew (CTL) fonts in libreoffice writer. They have all worked fine until recently, but something recently broke horribly. I'm running mostly stable, with some backports. The problem is described in more detail here: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=780607 Anyone seeing this? Any ideas? I don't see any errors spewed to the terminal. FWIW, I don't have libreoffice's Java recommendations / suggestions installed. searching for a structure viewer tool
Hi all I am looking for a tool which will allow to describe binary structure, some thing like byte 0-3: ascii string: name byte 4-5: uint16 network order: age byte 6: bitfield: flags and so on Then it should take arbitrary binary file and display contents of the file nicely according to the description. If found such a tool exists for MS Windows [1]. I remember there was similar for MS DOS. Is there something like that for the Debian GNU/Linux? Can't read any data from Bluetooth microphones
How can I get bluetooth microphones working on Debian Wheezy x86?
We are attempting to use a bluetooth device as a combination
microphone/speaker to serve as an endpoint in communication system we
are developing. We have a Motorola S305 headset which can be paired to
an ASUS USB bluetooth dongle; We bind it with a panasonic toughbook
CF18 running Debian Wheezy with the following steps:
Packages
install bluez, bluez-utils, alsa
/etc/modules

comment out any Disable=*commands with a #

by this point, the S305 should be paired and listed as the default
device for ALSA; using aplay or VLC will cause audio to play out of
the headset
HOWEVER,
When we attempt to run arecord it prints the initial information but
does not continue to print or ever terminate. Audacity freezes upon
the pressing of the record button or will issue a warning:
“Audio output failed:
Error while opening sound device. Please check the input device
settings and the project sample rate.”
The headset's microphone does not work with any sample rate in
audacity – I am not sure where to find this information, but I am led
to believe the problem is the input device settings
Some online reading has seemed to indicate the problem may be that
bluetooth has only 2 channels and that the headsets are being
configured for stereo audio rather than mono audio and recording. We
are not sure if this is true, and if so, how to apply this change.
We need bluetooth to be able to send and receive audio, but nothing we
have tried has yielded any success. How can we make bluetooth
microphones work, or what different options do we have as far as using
it as an ALSA source?

From my pijnt of view this is a bug in KDE. It should stick to the icons from the selected theme and not go into hicolor. Am coming really late into the conversation here. I've seen similarly different since I started doing installs via debootstrap. I'm using unstable and Xfce. Last debootstrap was couple days ago, and I still saw what I'm seeing here. The classic fallback x box that you normally see in some/many browsers pops up in when icons are *apparently* missing. My setup is extremely basic but some one of those very few subsequent package installs done post debootstrap each time corrects the problem here. Because it does, it's the old out of sight, out of mind kind of deal so I hadn't addressed it yet to determine the core cause. I know, I know *my bad* KDE4 pulling high contrast icons might be its version of using the x box as default. Maybe KDE4 developers have instructed it to roll down the list of available icon directories if it encounters missing icons whereas Xfce's fix is to turn to the classic x icon. Given the two options, I like what yours is doing because yours still visually distinguishes between apps, etc.. Mine becomes self-corrected early on with no intentional intervention from me. Two ways that could happen are 1) one of my few installed packages brings with it an entire new set of icon directories and/or 2) one of those few installed packages maybe overwrites core, errant system icon paths somewhere. Esto: #v+ iface eth0.1 inet static address 192.168.255.1 #v- Hace que ifupdown configure una subinterfaz de eth0 en vlan 1, sin que en el sistema se haya instalado el paquete vlan (que contiene vconfig) y sin que haya ningún script en if-pre-up.d ni if-post-down.d. La única limitación es que los nombres de la interfaces vlan deben tener ese aspecto y no pueden ser vlan1 como sí pueden ser cuando ifupdown utiliza vconfig (a través de un script en if-pre-up.d) Así que mi pregunta es si con las interfaces bridge se ha hecho algo parecido o hay que seguir instalando forzosamente bridge-utils. Si, me parece que eso aún es posible. vamos, que en Windows estamos acostumbrados a reinstalar en limpio cada 2x3... :-D Te diré que desde que instalé windows 7 (casi cuando salió) no he tenido necesidad de eso; parec que los chicos están mejorando, eso si, las actualizaciones son casi como el parto de la abuela. Eso es lo que yo le he hecho a un portátil, lo tenía con lxde y lo he pasado a xfce sin mayor problema... Ese cambio si es posible, pero lxde no es gnome y en este último el cambio no es tan transparente. Pues eso, una instalación en limpio y listo... :-P Esa es la opción que me queda si decido continuar. ifupdown en jessie, iproute2 e interfaces bridge
Un saludo a la lista: Tengo una duda sobre la creación de interfaces bridge en jessie a raíz de haber estado mirando las interfaces vlan. Resulta que, dado que iproute2 es capaz de crear interfaces vlan, el paquete vlan se ha declarado obsoleto y (no sé desde cuándo) se pueden crear directamente interfaces en /etc/network/interfaces sin tener que tener instalado el comando vconfig. Ahora bien, iproute2 también es capaz de crear interfaces bridge y me asalta la duda de si hay en jessie alguna manera[1] de declarar una interfaz bridge en /etc/network/interfaces sin tener instalado bridge-utils. Miro y remiro, pero sólo veo tutoriales que piden instalar bridge-utils. Lo que ocurre es que si miro y remiro cómo se crean interfaces vlan no hago más que ver la explicación que necesita vconfig; y me asaltan las dudas. En el manual del fichero interfaces indica esto: *For compatibility with bridge-utils package*, if bridge_ports option is specified, VLAN interface configuration is not performed. Es la única referencia que veo. Y no sé si entender que sí es necesario el paquete bridge-utils. Haciendo esto: #v+ iface br0 inet static address 192.168.255.1 bridge_ports eth1 eth2 #v- Consigo esto: # if up br0 Cannot find device br0 Failed to bring up br0. [1] sé que existe, en cualquier caso, la forma un poco enrevesada de usar a pelo el comando ip en pre-up y post-down para crear y destruir la interfaz bridge. Créer boot Grub avec super grub disk sur clé usb
Bonjour, Sur un portable neuf (sans CD/DVD), j'ai créé une nouvelle partition avec Wheezy, via Toutou-Linux sur clé USB. Ensuite, je dois placer un boot Grub pour pouvoir accéder à Wheezy. J'utilise une clé USB contenant l'image .iso de Super Grub Disk, que je créé avec unetbootin. Lorsque je boote le portable avec la clé USB bootable Grub Disk, apparait un compteur m'invitant à attendre 10 secondes, ou à cliquer sur une ligne contenant Default. Mais aucun boot possible, et le compteur se remet sans cesse à 10 secondes... J'ai refait la clé USB Grub bootable, rien n'y fait. Je l'ai testée sur d'autres PC portables, de bureau, pareil, aucun boot possible. Comment créer une clé USB bootable avec Super Grub Disk ? Ou comment trouver un autre moyen pour installer le boot Grub ? Merci ! The default (i.e. hardcoded value) could be changed, if possible. (Although it should wake up the admin that they need to merge files if they modified it. But I all too often see local admins simply keep their previous version of files without merging. Look at all of the people with trouble after the sudo secure_path change for examples.) Al final decidí dejarlo instalado al mínimo pero sin usarlo, cuando tenga tiempo reinstalo de nuevo si es que antes no abandono definitivamente debian (lo cual estoy pensando seriamente) Eso es lo que yo le he hecho a un portátil, lo tenía con lxde y lo he pasado a xfce sin mayor problema... Ese cambio si es posible, pero lxde no es gnome y en este último el cambio no es tan transparente. Por lo visto cada vez es mas difícil quitarse de encima a systemd. The old gdm2 used to have that feature, but that's long gone.
