IIRC they're generally in the same directory as the actual file, with an
extension like '.dpkg-dist'

I did originally have a root partition that was too small, thanks to the
same bad advice in the wiki, and had to repartition some years ago to fix
it.

I cheated; I remembered that he posted them last year.

I think it's possible that you, Charles, are still running wheezy,
which is probably why you're getting away with such a small root
partition.

If booting into single user mode allows you to umount /usr, then it
would be possible to migrate your root to /dev/sda6, but you don't
give me the impression that you'd be confident enough to do that.

If you're running a 3.2 kernel, just don't try to upgrade to 3.16;
the .deb file is 50% bigger.

I don't know what you've got in the partitions we don't see, but
judging by your use of /home, you've got room to repartition with
two at-least-32GB root partitions so that you can in future install/
upgrade a new Debian in one without touching the old one in the other.

Debian 8 fresh install, lost MATE desktop (lightdm) after first reboot, cannot recover graphical login

Yesterday, after a week with my new Debian 8 desktop running Mate, I
did an "aptitude update" and somehow upgraded "fglrx-control" among
other things (I have no idea if that was the genesis of my problem,
but later I found some nvidia packages installed wile I have an Intel
graphics device).  I merrily continued to work until I had to shutdown
to go to my Linux group meeting.  There I booted up my laptop (he
first reboot after the intial install) and could not get a graphical
display!

I have fooled with it all day to no avail.  I discovered just now that
I can get an X program to display from a remote login into the laptop,
but nothing on the physical laptop.  I have tried reinstalling MATE as
well as xfce to no avail.

When booting I get a flash of a message saying:

  [FAILED] Failed to start Light Display Manager.
  See 'systemctl status lightdm.service' for details.

When I execute "systemctl status lightdm.service" I get:

where appropriate /boot or /boot/efi ) is far less cumbersome as you only need 
to maintain 2-3 partitions, for instance a reasonable amount of free space on 
them. On btrfs, zfs you can even go to 1-2 partitions, as you put /home on a 
subvolume.

If you don't have requirements for this kind of setup, I side with Sven: 
repartition.

Sorry, I hadn't been paying enough attention. If you are awaiting a
kernel upgrade, you don't have enough space in /. My current two kernel
modules directories are each around 175MB, with /lib totalling 445MB.
You can't run /lib anywhere but inside /, so I don't think you have too
much choice but to plan for a bigger /.

Until quite recently, 'a few hundred megs' was enough for /, now it
isn't. Not only have the kernel modules mushroomed, but we are now
strongly advised to merge /usr into /. The boot process is getting
cleverer, and starting to want /usr stuff mounted during boot. There
are ways to arrange to mount a separate /usr, but that's another thing
to go wrong/get forgotten, it's easier to merge it in.

This is the problem.  The root filesystem is too small, so you will not
be able to install or upgrade a Debian kernel.  This is a bug[1] in the
automatic partitioner that only got fixed in Jessie.

There's no easy way out here, my choice would probably be to make a
backup and repartition the disk.

Petite question à ceux qui ont expérimenté ces freezes : vous n'aviez
pas par hasard un gros transfert NFS en cours, depuis *et* vers un
share NFS ?

J'ai le même problème dans ces circonstances précises : création d'une
image iso, depuis une arborescence NFS avec l'image placée elle-même
sur ce même share NFS (tout autre cas de figure passe...). C'est
reproductible à l'envi.

Le plantage est tellement brutal que la machine n'a pas le temps de
rien écrire dans les logs. Je vois juste un kernel panic impliquant
NFS à la console, c'est tout...

freeze je pouvais tout
de même me connecter avec un client ssh (en l'occurence depuis ma tablette) à 
ma machine plantée
via mon réseau local car le service est lancé à chaque démarrage. Que pourrais 
je tester pour
approfondir la piste flash ?

J'ai utilisé un temps Pelican mais je n'ai pas vraiment été convaincu.

Ok. Ya se sobre que era la conversación :-)

Si tienes problemas habituales con el suministro eléctrico, un pequeño 
'trick'. No actualices de golpe; primero descarga los paquetes con 'apt-get -d 
upgrade', y solo cuando termine de descargar haz la actualización real con 
'apt-get upgrade'.

En caso de fallo de corriente, por lo menos tendrás todos los paquetes ya 
descargados y podras continuar la actualización sin problemas. Te puedes hacer 
un pequeño script que lo automatice; o incluso un alias en Bash.

Lo del portal cautivo es simple, si tienes unos conocimientos básicos de html. 
Miras el código fuente de la página, y en algún lugar estará el formulario que 
se usa, con la página real a la que se mandan los datos junto con las 
variables.

Te montas un pequeño script en /etc/network/if-up.d/ que compruebe si estas 
conectado a la red del trabajo (por la IP, o con algún comando que lo 
compruebe, por ejemplo bajando la página web de autorización de ZeroShell ), 
y, si estas efectivamente en el trabajo, que lance WGET con los argumentos y 
el URL necesario.

Así dicho parece más complicado de lo que en realidad es ;-) ya verás que no 
es para tanto. Yo tenía algo similar para obtener mi IP real desde la página 
de mi router, y actualizar mi cuenta de DynDns (cuando era gratis).

It's mean, though, isn't it. It takes away the space% when it
adds the inode%.

dolor de cabeza.

Consider running:

# netstat -tulnp

which will, run as root, identify all the listening ports on
your system, UDP, TCP, IPv4 and IPv6, and -- special for root --
tell you the process name as well.

Anything that has a local address of 127.0.0.1 is only offering 
services to other processes on the same box.

Processes with a specific local address are listening only on 
that IP address -- this is mostly interesting if you have
several networks connected.

Most processes will be listening on every available IP address.

reconhecidos e devidamente registrados, acessando dessa forma você tem um

No veo nada raro, es decir, pensaba que podía haber algún parámetro 
adicional que se le estuviera pasando al kernel pero no, sólo el
necesario para que se inicie el sistema (aunque sin BT). 

Buscando en Google sobre ese error encontré este bug de Ubuntu que
parece ser exactamente el mismo problema que tienes (más que nada
por el modelo de portátil). El bug sigue abierto (el último mensaje es 
indicativo) pero echa un vistazo por si algún comentario dijera algo que 
te sirva:

Henrique,

respeito muito sua dedicação ao projeto e sua vontade em construir algo que
seja útil às pessoas.

Mas acho que o Emerson quis expor, é que talvez este não seja o melhor
espaço para você tentar conseguir financiamento para seu projeto.

Isto pois está lista tem como finalidade principal solucionar problemas e
dificuldades dos usuários no uso do sistema operacional Debian, além da
troca de experiências entre os usuários.

Tenho certeza absoluta que muitas pessoas que fazem parte desta lista
também fazem parte dos mais diversos projetos de forma voluntária, muitas
vezes colocando dinheiro do bolso - eu inclusive. E se todas essas pessoas
decidirem solicitar colaborações financeiras, esta lista simplesmente iria
ficar inviável. Por isso acho que temos que tomar os devidos cuidados como
uso que fazemos desse espaço público, coletivo e colaborativo.

Por outro lado, por mais que esta thread esteja fora do escopo da lista,
ela aconteceu sem problemas, o que só reforça o caráter de preocupação da
comunidade com projetos públicos.

Mas coloco a você uma questão. O projeto Linux não se resume ao Debian, e
vice-versa, será que para seu objetivo não seria muito mais frutífero
realizar esta campanha em outros ambientes, como nas redes sociais, em
grupos focados em tecnologias livres (grupos nas redes sociais eu quis
dizer), etc?

Enfim, tentando colaborar um pouco com a lista...

Enviar correo con Exim4 y relayhost

Buenas, tengo un tiempo tratando de usar mi correo desde consola para enviar 
correos. Tengo instalado Exim4 para el envio y quiero usar mi cuenta de hosting 
como relayhost. Mi server corre en el puerto 465 y aun no he podido ponerlo a 
funcionar.

Alguien tiene algun documento de como puedo hacer esto para el envio de correos 
?

de mémoire c’est le service rdnssd installé par défaut qui met à jour le 
fichier  /etc/resolv.conf . Le problème c’est qu’effectivement la mise à jour 
supprime le contenu personnalisé. Je me suis pas trop embêté avec ça , je l’ai 
simplement supprimer, car je n’utilise pas encore ipv6 ;)
Il y a un bug ouvert qui remonte ce problème (#767071)

Un paquete que se instale como dependencia no tiene por qué iniciarse 
automáticamente, tendrías que hacerlo manualmente por lo que estás en las 
mismas ;-)

C'est le programme auquel j'ai immédiatement pensé.
Pourtant le paquet resolvconf n'est installé.

Le programme qui sur ma VM, contrôle le fichier « /etc/resolv.conf » est
particulièrement "actif" : dès que je sors de l'éditeur de texte après
avoir modifié le fichier, l'ancien contenu est restauré.
De plus, le programme n'a pas signalé sa présence par un commentaire, par
exemple.

Hi all,

recently upgraded my media center/file server from wheezy to jessie, 
went quite well apart from one thing:
I installed kodi 15.2 from jessie-backports and that (as well as other 
programs depending on caps) throw an error

"Unable to find label "Eq" in plugin library file "/usr/lib/ladspa/caps.so".

Seems the same as this:

bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=722143

but the bug is archived, so I'd assuem it's fixed, apparently isn't.
For now I installed the 0.4.2 package from wheezy which happens to wrk but is 
not a good solution.
From what I read a patch is in unstable, but what about stable and backports 
then?

Como dije antes, prefiero eliminar un paquete a desactivarlo, pues si a 
futuro instalo algo que lo necesite por dependencia, si está 
desactivado, no genera mensaje de alerta al instalar y el nuevo paquete 
no funciona al estar desactivado el servicio.

Prefiero que se cargue como dependencia y se reactive solo.

¿Y si lo inicias desde una terminal gráfica y lo cierras te aparece algún 
mensaje adicional?

Prueba mejor a ejecutarlo desde una sesión de root ("kdesu akregator")

Bueno, recuerda que las versiones estables de Debian no están muy al día, 
es decir, los paquetes de kde que lleva estable (4.14) no son que digamos 
la última versión por lo que te puede estar mordiendo un bug de hace 2 
años perfectamente :-)

Es una versión viejuna, rebusca en los bugs que has visto por si te dan

Ça fait un bon moment que le fichier « /etc/resolv.conf » est dynamique. C’est
sûrement le paquet « resolvconf » qui est responsable de ce comportement.

Pour ce qui est de l’IPv6 par défaut dans Debian, je passe mon tour :D

Amigo complicado isso;
O Banco da suporte ao sistema e não ao seu equipamento.
Sem falar que a ferramente deles de monitoramento(ops "módulo de segurança") só 
serve para vigiar vc.
Você poderia perguntar o porquê de falaram isso. Com base no que.
Vão dizer que a área de segurança relatou o ocorrido, abra um atendimento para 
especificar o ocorrido.
Eu tenho problemas com o WarCraft rodo ele sem o CD aí uso um crack o santander 
sempre bloqueia minha conta quando uso ele com o navegador.
Aí logo ei for.o que trata-se de um falso positivo, e pelo fone reaolvo
Poderia ser dnd poison tbm, etc.
Existe uma infinidade possibilidades.

Ainda não loguei com a senha nova, pois estou com medo de bloquear novamente.

O que devo eliminar para não precisar formatar?

"en serio".

identificación de alias.
* eliminado avahi, que sinceramente, no me afectaba en lo más mínimo.

Y cosa extraña: luego de eliminar avahi, el inicio del sistema se
quedaba colgado con una línea que textualmente reproduzco:

Dado que no tengo carpetas o archivos en la red que presten servicios
NFS, eliminé el paquete, lo cual no me agradó, pero hube de hacerlo.

Seguiré dando vueltas con el tema, pues si bien "funciona", me da tirria
el no saber por qué las cosas no son como debería ser. Amén que no tengo
muy en claro de para qué sirve, cómo se usa y qué utilidad tiene avahi.

  New developments!  When I turned my machine on this morning, I was given
a lovely blue screen with "Alan McConnell" in a box in the center and a space 
for
the password just below.  I typed in my password and was presented with a bunch 
of
icons on the left hand side of the screen.  Very pretty.  But when I clicked on 
any
of them, trying to find a terminal emulator so I can run from the command line, 
I
get a frowny face, telling me that an error occurred(???) and the system is 
suspending.
All I can do is click OK and then I get put into the original login screen, as 
above.
I am not given a clue what the problem is.  I do know that I don't have an 
.Xauthority
file in /home/alan, and this may be part of the difficulty.  Does anyone know 
how to
create an .Xauthority with  xauth?  I find the man page of xauth pretty 
impenetrable.

 [  What is the difference between hitting the reset button, causing a reboot, 
and
turning the machine off?  It seems that there is one; otherwise why didn't I 
get this
result yesterday?  ]

I am still not able to connect to "the Internet" aka the outside world, and I 
don't
know why this is.  I am living in a retirement community and when I first moved 
in, in
December, a staff member came in with a router, connected my machine to it, and 
it
"worked".  That was with   wheezy  .  I haven't a clue why it doesn't work with
  jessie .  Of course this is a problem that I can expect only suggestions from 
the
friendly and innovative members of this E-list.

Strange. Libreoffice packages are dependencies of gnome (as is gdm3). You
could try

emacs24 is on DVD-2, so either you obtain this disk or (as was suggested
earlier in this thread) set up sources.list for an external mirror and
get it over the network.
  Once I get the network working, I can try this.  I think I will have 
to
  edit /etc/apt/sources.list, a ticklish procedure.  I am going to ask 
my
  GSFC friend if he can burn me the Official Debian jessie disks 2 and 
3,
  which should keep be busy for a while.

Olá Moacir,

Todo suporte de bancos faz uso de pessoas não qualificadas e a melhor forma de 
se tratar um problema é pedir para formatar. Uso o Bradesco em que em TODOS, 
repito TODOS os micros em que tentei conexão me solicitavam que instalasse uma 
atualização. Apenas um detalhe: quando fazia uso do linux ou de MAC essa 
questão não aparecia. Tentei em 15 micros DIFERENTES, todos com antivírus etc, 
etc. Em todos a mesma mensagem. Contatando o suporte deles me pediram para 
entrar em contato com meu técnico de confiança e formatar meu micro ... é como 
se vc fosse ao dentista, ele encontrasse um dente cariado e resolvesse que a 
melhor solução seria arrancá-lo.

Bom, usei meu linux para acessar o banco e "magicamente" após uma semana, a 
mensagem desapareceu 

Deixo à vocês a conclusão, mas com certeza em nenhum dos 15 micros estava o 
problema.

Wayland is a protocol for communication between clients and a compositor. From 
a user's perspective you don't use it directly, you programs do. With that out 
of the way, there are several options:

- gnome. I think it's pretty much ready, fedora considered a gnome-wayland 
session for their upcoming release
- Plasma > 5.5. I tried Plasma 5.5 and gave up not too far in. Problem is 
window decoration is way off reasonable. You might have more luck with 5.6. 
Beware that debian packaging takes long time, 5.5 is still in experimental, no 
sign of 5.6 that I'm aware of.
- enlightment ought to have a good wayland session, but not in e17 (I think 
e19+, maybe e20). However, debian has only e17 packaged. I built enlightenment 
a while ago myself, but did not get a wayland session into a usable state.

there is weston, of course, and it works, but its definitely not a full desktop 
environment.
There are some (ubuntu-focused) ppas that may have software that works for you, 
if you consider switching away from debian, fedora+gnome is probably the most 
advanced choice. Stay away from their developement release though, they don't 
sign their packages. (Which of course raises questions for their stable 
releases too).

You'll not get to abandon all X clients any time soon, because there are many 
programs that speak X directly, not through some toolkit that is also ported to 
use wayland. That is not so much of a problem though, as they can integrate 
into a wayland session with xwayland.

Dear Folks,

I have been looking up wayland on google.  I also checked out some video
demos of it.

There seem to be different ways of setting it up.

Some run on top of X and some standalone etc.

Does anyone on the list here use wayland in default standalone mode; ie
they have pretty much abandoned X?

I`m trying to install debian wheezy 64bit via pxe and i`m using 
netinstall image (i have installed a lot of servers via that pxe and 
first time i got this problem) and in manual partitioning i cant find 
filesystem ext4, i have added print screen url.


I tested it on two different physical servers with different disk drives 
and there is the same problem.

Ce qui se passe, car le formatage a un peu cassé la lisibilité, c'est
qu'au final, un script perl appelle la commande :

/usr/sbin/pam-auth-update --package

Celle ci attend une réponse manuelle de l'administrateur et bloque
toutes les mises à jour tant que la réponse n'est pas donnée.

Sauf que le man de pam-auth-update dit sur le sujet


"Selection of profiles is done using the standard debconf interface.
The profile selection question will be asked at `medium' priority when
packages are added or removed, so no user interaction is required by
default.  Users may invoke pam-auth-update  directly  to  change their
authentication configuration.

OPTIONS

A priori, ici ce n'est pas le cas. Nous avons des configurations
personnalisées des fichiers /etc/pam.d/*, mais rien d’extraordinaire non
plus (gestion  du mkhomedir avec un umask différent de celui par défaut,
ajout du pam_access et de pam_ldap)

Est ce un bug de pam-auth-update, de debconf, de systemd ou une
configuration particulière des serveurs (l'appel d'apt-get avec les
options Dpkg ?)

Si vous avez déjà été confronté à ce soucis, je serais preneur de vos
remarques.
Au cas ou ce ne serait pas le fonctionnement normal de pam-auth-update,
j'ouvrirais un bug sur le sujet.

Concordo com o Emerson Sobreiro, fiz uma pergunta e nem obtive resposta,
mas tudo bem, na correria talvez o cara nem tenha lido todas as mensagens.
Só desejo boa sorte ao projeto, eu particularmente nunca usei esse site e
nem sabia que existia, por isso fiz umas perguntas básicas pra poder
entender, e hoje em dia com Youtube realmente fica difícil manter um
projeto desse tipo.

Agora ficar dando relatório do que já conseguiu está realmente ficando

“The Skinny Client Control Protocol (SCCP) is a proprietary network terminal 
control protocol originally developed by Selsius Systems, which was acquired by

during the update, that I was low on space.
The update did seem to complete, though.

I'm not using KDE at the moment, but my experience of it is that all KDE
applications store their configuration in text files. Is there a
knotifyrc file somewhere on your system? See the "second way" in the
following link:

Segmentation faul en akregator

Hola listeros.

Después de varios años, he vuelto a Debian (Jessie), con KDE como escritorio.

La aplicación Akregator se cierra al salir. Funciona todo correctamente, y el 
fallo no aparenta tener ninguna repercusión, excepto el mensaje del manejador 
de fallos de KDE cada vez que la cierro. Exactamente, el error es el 
siguiente:

akregator PID: 2808 Señal: Segmentation fault (11) Hora: 05-04-16 13:14:38

El error se produce siempre, tanto si he actualizado los canales como si no.

He limpiado toda la configuración de mi usuario ( todos los archivos ocultos de 
mi directorio , excepto algunos que conservo, como el .config/mc ). El error se 
repite, desde el primer uso de la aplicación.

Todos los paquetes están actualizados a fecha de hoy.

En Google aparecen multiples informes de este fallo, pero todos están cerrados 
y el error (supuestamente) subsanado. Además, son de hace un par de años (2014 
el mas reciente que he observado).

No hay mas errores en KDE-PIM ni KDE en general. Es el único error que he 
tenido.

¿ Alguna sugerencia ?
