Yes, this is exactly what happens on my PC. But it has no solution.

In the meantime I found a workaround. I moved /etc/cron.daily/apt out of
the way. It looks like this script is being executed during boot before
the network is ready.

How can I make sure that the script /etc/cron.daily/apt is only executed
when network is up? What is this script good for anyways?

failed to load kernel modules at boot

2017-01-22 Thread HP Garcia
Hey everyone,

I'm getting failed to load kernel modules at boot. I have two questions.

1. Do I need to do load or compile any of the kernel modules
during the kernel compiling process? Here are my steps that I use:

tar -xJvf linuxX.X.tar.xz

cd linux-x.x

make clean && make mrproper

cp /boot/config-`uname -r` ./.config

make localmodconfig

make-kpkg clean

fakeroot make-kpkg --initrd --append-to-version=-custom kernel_image
kernel_headers

sudo dpkg -i debs

2. Any suggestions on how to force the kernel modules load
during boot? I did a Google search on this subject and I followed the
instruction and no luck.

Thanks for any suggestions in advance

I don't understand how a live image relates to this topic. The OP wants to
install debian alongside MacOS, so he needs a standard image.

I recently installed debian stretch on my MacBookPro12,1, using a netinst
image that included non-free firmware (needed for my wifi adapter). I flashed
that image on a USB stick, as 12,1 does not have a DVD drive, but it would be
the same on a DVD-ROM. I can say that the installation worked well.

Reportbug is just a tool that makes it "easy" to report a bug. It is a
very useful tool but by no means the only option to report bugs. For
example, you can report bugs by sending an e-mail to
sub...@bugs.debian.org with a special format. See
https://www.debian.org/Bugs/Reporting for more details.

Try running reportbug with text user interface by adding the --ui=text

Update from which version to which version? What version of LXDE shows
this bug? Can you provide a link to the kali-linux bug report?

> Do the LXDE developers know of this? Shall we file another bugreport to the
> LXDE maintainers?

I do not see anything like this reported at
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?pkg=lxde;dist=unstable .
So it is possible that the maintainers are not aware of this.

As to whether the bug has to be reported in Debian, the answers is
that it depends. If the bug exists in the version that is carried by
Debian, then it makes sense to report it. Also, check if the upstream
(i.e authors of lxde) are aware of this and if it is fixed in future
versions.

hope that helps

Can you please copy paste the error message?

Is the problem specific to xfce audio mixer? For example, are you able
to use a command line tool such as aumix to increase/decrease the
sound?

Have you ruled out hardware failure? For example, does the audio
device work in windows? What happens if you pop in a live cd? Is that
able to detect the audio device?

Sorry for all the questions with no definite answers. I am by no means

hostname drops off between remote sessions

2017-01-22 Thread Tony Baldwin
I rent a VPS from Contabo, in Germany (as if the location were
relevant), which is still running wheezy.
Lately, when I access it (generally via ssh) the hostname appears to be
changed to (none). I have yet to determine if this is only when I've
had to remotely restart is from the contabo control panel, or just
any/every time I log-in again, but it seems kind of random.
I just reset it with hostname $mychosenhostname, and that remains the
hostname for the duration of my session, but I'll come back another time
(Like I said, I have yet to rule out or determine whether it's only
after reboots or not, although I'm beginning to suspect it is.), and it
will be (none) again, although my /etc/hosts file appears unchanged.

It never, for several years, used to do this, it is recent, and to me,
perplexing behaviour.

When I log in, I want to see

Now, I'm reading
here:https://www.vultr.com/docs/how-to-change-your-hostname-on-debian
That I have to run /etc/init.d/hostname.sh, which I do not ever recall
having to do in the past to permanently set my hostname, and when I try
to run that, I get an error about my hostname not being valid

:/etc/init.d# ./hostname.sh start

What's going on here?

Why am I having so much headache with something as simple as setting
permanently the hostname?
This all started in about the last 60-90 days. Prior to that I do not
recall ever seeing this oddity.

OK, lets put the question another way around. Have you tried with different
hub?

My experience shows that there are hubs of a better and hubs of a lower
quality. With some hubs something may work with some other may not. I
experienced a similar problem with usb dvbt stick and I don't know what was
the root cause exactly - if power too low or something with the hub.

I think the discussion here seems illuminating:

https://linuxnewbieguide.org/how-to-install-linux-on-a-macintosh-computer/

You want to use a installation with efi support so apparently the Debian
Live option is not recommended because it doesn't support efi booting.

The standard installation iso files do. If the efi installer fires up it
will apparently identify itself as such when it does so.

If you boot the Mac and choose option C in the start up mode that is
supposed to try to boot up DVD iso files etc but the article suggests this
could fail if the efi driver isn't loaded - the rEFInd utility solves this
problem it seems.

Apparently you need to convert the iso file into an image format.

It's probably easier to install Debian on an IBM 390.

2017-01-22 Thread Cathy Gramze

As an iMac owner who has had a dual boot Mac system before:

Hold down the C key while the computer is starting up, and the computer
will boot to the DVD. (assuming the dvd was burned correctly as a
bootable DVD)

reFind is a very nice app, but unnecessary, and *really* mucks up being
able to completely remove one of the boot options from the computer
should you want to remove it later. I also found that setting up a dual
boot system made my iMac boot much more slowly no matter which system I
selected. This slowness persisted after I returned to a single boot
system. YMMV.

I wish you luck, and hope you like Debian.

The point is that, in contrast to all other PCs I had, on Macs you cannot
enter the BIOS setup and configure the boot order. You have to press the
"Option ⌥" key while powering on the Mac. That will allow you to enter the
Startup Manager, where you'll see a list of all bootable devices available,
and choose the one you need (e.g. a bootable DVD-ROM).

Greetings. I run a dual boot system with debian, gentoo and windows 10 on
different partitions. I would suggest a couple of things. When you say
that the DVD does not seem to be recognised when you boot up the computer,
I am assuming that you mean that the bios is not attempting to read the DVD
and boot from it.

If that this the case then you need to play with the bios on your Mac box
to get it to boot from the debian DVD. If you google around and seek out
some bios booting instructions for your Mac machine and experiment with it
you will be able to
persuade it to go for the DVD first - before the hard drive (s) etc and
boot from it.

Once you get this to work I would suggest you try booting from a Debian
Live CD.

Then post up how you got on here on the site and suggestions on installing
the OS can be made from the vantage point of running a few diagnostic
commands concerning your disk partitions etc that would likely be suggested
by people on this list.

Yes, Frederic,
My Hub is self-powered, Cable for smartphone looks ok, as long as I use the
same one to connect to PC USB directly and it works. Seems like HUB is
unable to work with MTP device. Also, I cannot try to connect smartphone
with HUB cable becaue they are totally incompatible.

My experience with MTP and a Samsung smartphone is that the usb cable gauge is
critical.

A standard gauge 28 cable is too thin to provide a good power supply to the
phone. The device constantly disconnects until Android gives up claiming that
it could not find a suitable program on the host computer to communicate with.

I tried gauge 24/28 cables. They give a somewhat better result but it is far
from perfect. I suspect the cable is not entirely to blame at this point.

Your hub or its cable could be unable to provide the required power supply to
the smartphone. Is your hub self powered?

Have you tried to connect the smartphone with the hub cable? It may be too
thin for MTP requirements.

Well, that's not true. In fact I do have virtual consoles. On the Mac I need
to press ctrl+alt+fn+Fi, where i=1, 2, 3... 6 to get to one of the six
vconsoles I have. fn is the key that makes the top row keys act as function
keys:
http://cdn.osxdaily.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/macbook-keyboard.jpg

As for Joel's question, trying to switch between virtual consoles several
times doesn't result in anything--the screen keeps staying black. And it's not
the system that *thinks* the screen is off. It is indeed off, as the following
command from an ssh session shows:

$ cat /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/bl_power
4

bl_power = 4 means the screen is off.

I sent a bug report on this issue some weeks ago, but it's not been considered
till now, so I wonder whether I sent it to the right place and whether it will
ever be considered:

The best option I found is to install FX Explorer and upgrade it to the
plus version, which gives me an SMB/FTP/SSH client to directly read my
PCs' filesystems (and direct access to my home fileserver).

It's less of a horror show than having two operating systems trying to
write to the same block device at the same time. Or having to disable
access to the block device from one OS, which can really mess up
applications trying to access it. What happens on your computer if
you are running an application where the binary itself or the data it
needs is on a USB device and you pull the device out? Now imagine
that describing everything you're running.

> I've given up on getting it to work consistently and have installed dropbox

That's essentially what MTP does (only without using an third location
to sync against). Well, probably closer to using FTP to files to/from
the device, only without using TCP/IP. (Oh, just refreshing and
apparently one can run MTP over TCP/IP, though I suspect that
implementations being talked about here are still direct USB
connections.)

Any fancy GUI for navigating file systems should function as well for
an MTP attached device as it would for say, an FTP service.

>From what I've heard, MS had 3rd tier engineers develop MTP, and even
they are a little ashamed of it. But, it's still the primary protocol
out there. So, the idea of MTP is sound, but the particular design,
and the various implementations, well... there is probably room for
improvement. But it's unlikely to happen with anything less than full
industry support.
