Handbook lies. uname(1) says that '-r' means 'kernel release' aka ABI,
and '-v' is the kernel version. And then in doubt you always trust
manpage, not book. Compare this:

$ uname -r
3.16.0-4-amd64

to this:

$ uname -v
#1 SMP Debian 3.16.39-1 (2016-12-30)

And as Sven said, they name kernel packages after the ABI ('release'),
not specific version.

I created that file with this line but it does not help. Still the same

opens Dolphin with "camera:..." while the second opens Dolphin with
"mtp:..." in the location bar. When I actually try to navigate to the

notification pop-up on my desktop with the same two options...

When I actually try to access the photos, I frequently get "process

phone will lock when connected, even if a file transfer is underway.
This kills the transfer.

To make matters worse, I have photos and videos that I have taken

Clearly this is not the way the process is supposed to work. I can

- there should be a record of the error in a log somewhere. As it is,
all I can find is a lot of systemd journal entries like "Jan 24

It sounds like you want to offload files from your android. For a few
years now I've been using Software Data Cable to do this, free app, no
cable needed. Launch the app and it sets up an ftp server on the
phone. Then from my laptop I log in, navigate, up- and download files.
When done, I shut down the ftp server on the phone. Easy-squeezy.

Just in case the above doesn't work out for you (and I'm going to look
into that one, myself), because, in my experience, this disaster
called MTP is simply a headache...

I'm going to suggest what I do to access storage on my Motorola Droid II.
Install Dropbox.
Alternatively, if you have access to any remote server running an
ftpd, AndFTP is an option. I've done both, and currently find the
dropbox most convenient.

I'm going to hazard a guess that this problem is Linux specific since
the hordes of Android users would rebel if this was happening on
Windows. However I can't understand why it should be such an issue since
the MTP is an open specification that has been around since 2008 and
Google is heavily involved with it.

The Dropbox idea sounds reasonable if I don't mind putting massive
amounts of data onto the Internet. I think I'll try the software data
cable instead.

Thanks.

I have a Debian testing XFCE4 desktop system and use gpg-agent to
manager ssh-agent protocol as well. There is "enable-ssh-support" in
~/.gnupg/gpg-agent.conf file which, among other things, makes
/etc/X11/Xsession.d/90gpg-agent file set variable SSH_AUTH_SOCK so that
/etc/X11/Xsession.d/90x11-common_ssh-agent file _doesn't_ start
ssh-agent.

That works just fine (i.e., ssh-agent is not started) if I start a bare
X session like

$ startx /usr/bin/xfce4-terminal

but if I start a full XFCE4 session (/usr/bin/startxfce4) then something
(but certainly not 90x11-common_ssh-agent) starts "ssh-agent -s" process
and overrides SSH_AUTH_SOCK variable. And that's annoying.

So, does anybody know how to not start ssh-agent with XFCE4 desktop

ok it's not that slow but I think the difference is quite visible.

I use following in /etc/default/grub as my notebook supports 1024x768 and
1366x768. The later being the native resolution. Perhaps you check with
(ex.: xrandr) what your native resolution is and try it out.

# The resolution used on graphical terminal
# note that you can use only modes which your graphic card supports via VBE
# you can see them in real GRUB with the command `vbeinfo'
GRUB_GFXMODE=1366x768
#GRUB_GFXMODE=1024x768x24
#GRUB_GFXMODE=1360x768x8,1360x768
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=keep

you need update-grub after changing /etc/default/grub.

Yes as mentioned above this works but I have HUGE characters.

For the boot menu, or after?

If after, what gfxchip do you have, maybe something other than NVidia, AMD/ATI
or Intel? Use 'lspci | grep VGA' or 'inxi -c0 -G' to report here.

Are the "HUGE characters" the same size as you find on the vttys after booting?
If so, there are a couple of things you could try if you'd rather have smaller
text characters.

To test, hit the "e" key while your Grub selection is up, then append either any
of the following before proceeding to boot:

vga=788
vga=791
vga=794
video=1024x768
video=1152x864
video=1280x1024
video=1440x900
video=1600x900
video=1680x1050
video=1920x1080
video=1920x1200

Others are possible, as above is not an exhaustive list.

Grub will report vga= is deprecated, but nevertheless the kernel will at least
briefly use smaller characters than those used in video BIOS 80x25 mode.

Video= tells the kernel to use the specified mode for the KMS framebuffers. Pick
a mode that matches your display's native resolution to get the smallest
possible text.

If one of the above produce a result you like, you can reconfigure Grub to
include the appendage permanently via /etc/default/grub and regenerating Grub's
boot menu.

Apparently it was only packaged after the Jessie release, due to some

I find the most reliable method for installing downloaded deb files is
to use the gdebi (or gdebi-kde if you prefer) package. You can configure
your file manager to associate *.deb files with gdebi-gtk (the
executable shipped in the gdebi package) or you can run "gdebi-gtk
/path/to/*.deb" at a command line (I believe gdebi will ask for
superuser privileges ONLY when it needs them).

gdebi lets you look at the contents of the package before installation
and, unlike dpkg, it knows about dependencies so it can tell you before
you install the file whether you already have everything installed,
whether the requirements are unsatisfiable (as would be the case for
some 'foreign' packages) or, if packages need to be installed, they will
be installed at the same time as the package (so no need for apt's
"fix-broken" option).

Apparently it was only packaged after the Jessie release, due to some
licensing issues (GFDL) in versions prior to 1.10. You could install
the version from testing[1] or an older one from snapshot.debian.org[2].
The latter is probably preferable, since it's closer to the mate
version in stable.

Alternatively, Linux Mint has a 1.8.1 version in their repositories[3]
which you could install. Here is the usual disclaimer: inspect the
package before you install it, and if there's any file conflict with
Debian packages you are on your own.

Sven

I have cleared up some unrelated problems.
I have downloaded the package referenced in [2] as recommended.
How do I install it? A reading assignment would be appreciated.

Nope. I suspect because you did not bother to read context.

There is also a page with bug reports. A search of it with "space" would
be a start.

There's a "debian-installer" pseudo package that you can use to report
bugs.

debian NETINST installer problem - Nonsense error messages that don't indicate real problem

2017-01-26 Thread Peter Bradstreet
Package: installer
Version:  8.7.1

This isn’t a ‘package’ per say… not sure what group it goes to

There’s a class of error messages being returned by the Debian Installer that
are totally bogus and misleading.

I was doing a NETINST on VirtualBox, version 5.0.32 r112930 on a Apple
MacBook Pro, (Mid 2014) running MacOS Sierra Version 10.12.2.

I’ve tried both the i386 and amd64 versions, an get something along the lines
of below. Other non-sense errors also will occur. (why explained a few lines
down)

 /cdrom/:Please insert the disk labeled: ‘Debian GNU Linux 8.7.1 _Jessie_ -
Official i386 NETINST Binary-1 20170116-10:07’ in the drive ‘/cdrom/ and press
enter

To reproduce: I pulled down the ISO, created a fresh VirtualBox area took all
the default options, but selected ANY one of the Desktops and separate /,
/home, /var and /tmp directories. — ALSO With Virtual Box, I also took the
defaults of a 8 Gig disk space..

  Bet you see where I’m going here..

The PROBLEM is something completely unexpected — I ran out of disk space — yet
all the error messages were being generated second hand because the writes to
disk had previously failed due to out-of-room, and then later it the file
wasn’t where it was expected. Result total nonsense errors, asking me to insert
CDROM/ (I was doing a NetInstall.. was the ??)

Since the system never got into a normal boot state, it wasn’t obvious where to
look for the real problem.

I’m requesting that the Installer be smart enough to at least tell me that it
ran out of disk space… There’s nothing the installer can “do” about it, but
it CAN inform the customer.

1) Simple solution: — At end of install (after it’s failed, but before
putting up nonsense errors), report if the disk partitions that were created
are  > 95% full.
2) Proactive solution: — While copying all the files over and decompressing
them, report if there are any failures do to out if disk space (or > 95% full)
3) Complicated solution: — Determine the total amount of space needed before
the copy/decompress starts, and complain if not enough room.
4) Absolutely Wonderful solution: — Same as above, but BEFORE the disk
partitions are created.

I’d be happy with 1, overjoyed with 2, tell everybody how great your are with
3. As per 4, maybe I’ll never touch a windows machine again…  :-)

3.16.0-4 is *not* the kernel version but the ABI name used. The real
kernel version (at the current time) is 3.16.39.

Everything behaves as it should and everything should work out of the
box.
