I've snipped the details as I suspect the various readers have subconsciously
used those details to say your goals/motivations are _identical_ to theirs.

Following this thread I _read into_ your posts some {mutually contradictory}
things I've tried to do with various levels of success.

Once it's prepared, for what do you use it?
What problem did using a USB stick for the above purpose solve?
With what versions of Debian were you successful?

I worded those questions to keep out as many of my preconceptions out as
possible.

My intent is to have a USB installer flash drive to which I can add a
preseed.cfg file, non-free firmware packages, and other stuff I like to
add to a fresh machine.

It turned out that the problem was a change in syslinux's behavior that
was documented for Stretch's install instructions[1], but not for
Jessie[2]. It boiled down to the grammar of the syslinux.cfg file. For
instance, this is the old way:

  default vmlinuz
  append initrd=initrd.gz

This is the new way:

  default vmlinuz initrd=initrd.gz

opens Dolphin with "camera:..." while the second opens Dolphin with
"mtp:..." in the location bar. When I actually try to navigate to the

device is attempting mtp access... When I click "Allow", I get another
notification pop-up on my desktop with the same two options...

When I actually try to access the photos, I frequently get "process

phone will lock when connected, even if a file transfer is underway.
This kills the transfer.

To make matters worse, I have photos and videos that I have taken

Clearly this is not the way the process is supposed to work. I can

everything on the desktop side seems wrong:
- the two actions should be distinguishable by their description,
- the process shouldn't die and if it does, it should relaunch,
- the connection should block the phone from locking if locking will
stop file transfers,
- there should be a record of the error in a log somewhere. As it is,
all I can find is a lot of systemd journal entries like "Jan 24
14:01:33 transponder kernel: usb 4-5: usbfs: process 20598 (mtp.so)
did not claim interface 0 before use" which seem to occur before the
device is actually recognized.
- all the photos should show up

It sounds like you want to offload files from your android. For a few
years now I've been using Software Data Cable to do this, free app, no
cable needed. Launch the app and it sets up an ftp server on the
phone. Then from my laptop I log in, navigate, up- and download files.
When done, I shut down the ftp server on the phone. Easy-squeezy.

I reinstalled kdeconnect on my desktop but still nothing, whether the

what's going wrong?

Have you tried "Refresh" on the phone? If not, then tap on either the
three-dot menu on the upper right or the menu on the lower right. If your
desktop still isn't listed under Available Devices, and it has its own IP
address, you can add it to KDE Connect on the phone -- press either menu,
then "Add devices by IP".

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Robert
Verified my desktop's IP address and added it but when I go back to the
KDE Connect Devices panel, it still isn't there even after a refresh.

I don't see a menu on the lower right. What I've got is something on the
top left that when I press it, it shows me my phone and an option to
"Pair new device" that simply takes me back to the Devices panel.

My desktop's IP address remains in the Custom device list panel but
never shows up anywhere else.

I've verified that my phone is on my local network.

I found kdeconnect-cli on my desktop but it also shows no devices.

First I should say that the result I described in my original post
occurred in a computer with Debian Wheezy as the OS. I do not know
whether the result would be the same with Jessie, and frankly I am not
really anxious to find out.

Second, all these drives were encrypted with cryptsetup. Encryption
plus ext4 with journalling may have been too much to ask of the
operating system.

Third, the last thing I did the evening before the morning when the
computer crashed was to transfer a series of uncompressed jpg files to
a USB flash drive. I assumed that the transfer was finished when the
bang reappeared on the command line; so I shut down the computer. I
did not unmount the drive before shutdown. It may be that the
journalling requirements for the transfer were never finished when the
bang appeared, and were still unfinished at shutdown, thereby causing
the computer not to boot the next morning. I will never know now. I
did of course have to reinstall the OS starting on that day.

Finally, I discovered that trying to open an encrypted USB flash drive
in Dolphin caused Dolphin to crash. I had to use Konqueror instead.
I filed a bug report for the crash. I have never checked to see
whether the bug was fixed.

All the events described in my original post and in this one took
place in December 2014. I continue since then to use Konqueror for
such encrypted drives with ext2. This arrangement works for me, and
my curiosity does not extend so far as to find out whether I still
need to use it three years later.

Re: Advice / recommendations on Inexpensive Managed Ethernet Switches

2017-02-02 Thread rhkramer
Thanks for the replies (from Dan and Frank)!

I'm going to do some thinking--at first I just wanted to find out how we were
using so much bandwidth, but, once I do, I might want to try blocking some of
it if that won't disable pages that I want to look at.

I'll look for pfSense or OPNSense--apper doesn't list them for Wheezy, but I'm
sure I can find them.

I don' think I want to try to use a Debian box as a smart router, I'd rather
find a packaged solution. (I've done things like that before--I've learned too
much about NAT and such over the last 30 years or so. ;-)

disk error -> reset entire USB connection

2017-02-02 Thread Ross Boylan
I have multiple drives in a Vantec HX4 case connect by USB 3.0 It
seems a disk I/O error* causes the entire USB connection to reset,
causing all the drives to be remapped and screwing up the connections
to all the disks in the case.

Is this expected behavior for the linux kernel?

I'm running linux-image 3.16.39-1~bpo70+1 and I first noticed the
problem within a day of an upgrade to the kernel that had a lot of
changes, though retaining the same number:
[UPGRADE] linux-image-3.16.0-0.bpo.4-amd64:amd64
3.16.36-1+deb8u2~bpo70+1 -> 3.16.39-1~bpo70+1
The machine is still on Debian 7.11 aka wheezy.

There are a number of USB changes in the changelog; this one looks in
the same area as my problem:
- usb: xhci: Fix panic if disconnect

I do seem to have a hardware problem with one of the disks (though I'm
now getting an error for the replacement). I moved it to a single
drive case connected by USB and got errors when reading the same
sectors that originally caused trouble. It also exhibited the same
behavior of reseting the USB connection and remapping the drive,
though it only affected the drive with the problem in this case.

*It is possible the error is happening further up the chain, and that
this causes the reset which in turn causes the reported I/O error.
Since the error seemed to move with the disk, it seems more likely the
error is on the disk.

Here's what the log looks like:

SCSI rescan (Mint 17.3)

2017-02-02 Thread Paul Duncan

Hi,

I'm updating wiki documentation for one of our systems, which has an LTO
tape drive hooked up to an HP P411 SAS RAID controller.

In the good old days of the cciss driver we could issue the following
command to get the drive recognised if the system had been booted
without it being switched on:

   echo rescan >/proc/scsi/cciss/6

According to things I have read, the following should work with a modern
system:

   echo 1 >/sys/class/scsi_host/host0/scan

But all I get is an error message if I try that. Does anyone have an
idea of where I'm going wrong?

Thanks!

Paul.

/var/log/syslog is a place to look for io errors. If you are having
them you likely have a failing disk and need to replace it ASAP.

given the cost of disks, running raid 1 with pairs of disks is really

Yes, the filesystems are journalled. I will take a look at /var/log/syslog.

Dá uma olhada aqui:

Basicamente é fazer um encontro para celebrar o aniversário do Debian.

user menu in midnight commander

2017-02-02 Thread sp113438
Hi,,
I have this problem. I have a command:

find -type f -depth -maxdepth 1 -execdir bash -c ' conv_name=$(printf
%s "$1" | iconv -f utf8 -t latin1 | iconv -f cp1251); mv -v -- "$1"
"$conv_name" ' -- {} ';'

(it is for the conversion of cyrillic filenames)

and I want to add it in the user menu of midnight commander.
It should apply on all files in the open directory.

Any ideas on how to do this?

I tried to add this to the user menu, it shows up when F2 pressed, but
it does not work, it asks for parameters:

+ ! t t
z Cyrillic convert
CMD=%{find -type f -depth -execdir bash -c ' conv_name=$(printf
  %s "$1" | iconv -f utf8 -t latin1 | iconv -f cp1251); mv -v -- "$1"

I was on the system last night until close to midnight with no

segfaulting. Nothing then until 11:41:30 this morning, which seems to

No, I can assure all commands were in order, including 'agent'.
In the meantime a look given to 'lsmod' in the older mcmini (the one
with squeeze ppc that paired with the kb) showed that there the
bluetooth mod was used, among others, by 'l2cap' and 'sco', which are
missing both in Jessie and Stretch kernel's modules.
OTAH I have no idea what those modules helped doing...

BTW, I red the suggested url, and so many others up to now and have no hope
left ;-(

Thanks, Ennio

How to fix I/O errors?

2017-02-02 Thread Marc Shapiro
I apologize for this being so long, but since the problem occurs
sporadically I wanted to get as much information in this post as
possible because I don't know when it will happen again.

This problem started a bout two weeks ago. I woke up to find a black
screen and a kernel panic. I rebooted and was presented with many fsck
errors that could not be handled automatically so I ran it manually, as
directed. I took all the defaults. Any time that I was shown a file
name it seemed to be a flash file in my daughters /home directory or
otherwise related to flash. Afterwards, the only partition that I found
anything in lost+found was /home and all of the files there were,
indeed, showing my daughter as owner. I shutdown and rebooted to get
everything clean and it seemed good for a while. Since then, however,
every day or two things just stop working properly. Menus cease to do
anything, pages don't load in the browser, etc. If I exit from X and
work at a console, some commands (like ls) seem to work fine, others do
not, giving me I/O error messages. I can't even do a typescript, or
redirect the output to a file that I could attach here, since I just get
errors. I can't even do a ctl-alt-del to reboot, as I get an error saying:

INIT: cannot execute "/sbin/shutdown"

I have no choice but to power down with the power button, which I really
don't like to do.

It happened again, today, and I manually copied down the errors so I
hope that I got it all correct. This is what I did before shutting down:

Note that almost all real filesystems are readonly.

I logged out and back in as root. From /root I attempted to copy a text
file to /usr/local/photos (which still shows as rw):

cp wheezy1.script /usr/local/photos

[] end_request: I/O error, dev sda, sector 4111464

-bash /bin/cp: Input/output error

NOTE: all the empty brackets on the left actually had timestamps in
them. The same is true in all following cases, as well.

I then changed directory to /usr/local/photos and tried to create a new
file with touch:

touch tempfile

[] Write(10): 2a 00 08 56 9e 0c 00 00 08 00

[] sd: 0:0:0:0: [sda] Unhandled error code

[] sd: 0:0:0:0: [sda]

[] Result: hostbyte=DID_BAD_TARGET driverbyte=DRIVER_OK

[] sd: 0:0:0:0: [sda] CDB:

Finally, I tried to unmount /home with the intention of remounting it to
see if it would come back as rw:

umount /home

[] sd: 0:0:0:0: [sda]

When I plug the phone in, I get the notification with 2 suggested
actions. They both read "Open with File Manager" but the first one
opens Dolphin with "camera:..." while the second opens Dolphin with
"mtp:..." in the location bar. When I actually try to navigate to the
folder with my photos, I get a notification on the phone telling me a
device is attempting mtp access... When I click "Allow", I get another
notification pop-up on my desktop with the same two options...

When I actually try to access the photos, I frequently get "process
died" or "I/O error" messages, although sometimes I can actually see a
photo (not just the file names) - persistence pays off. Moreover the
phone will lock when connected, even if a file transfer is underway.
This kills the transfer.

To make matters worse, I have photos and videos that I have taken
which show up in the Gallery on the phone and which I can view on the
phone and see when I remove the SD card and read it directly but which
don't show up in Dolphin.

Clearly this is not the way the process is supposed to work. I can
understand the phone requesting a verification for the connection, but
everything on the desktop side seems wrong:

Just in case the above doesn't work out for you (and I'm going to
look into that one, myself), because, in my experience, this
disaster called MTP is simply a headache...
I'm going to suggest what I do to access storage on my Motorola Droid
II.

Install Dropbox.
Alternatively, if you have access to any remote server running an
ftpd, AndFTP is an option. I've done both, and currently find the
dropbox most convenient.

Tony

I'm going to hazard a guess that this problem is Linux specific since
the hordes of Android users would rebel if this was happening on
Windows. However I can't understand why it should be such an issue
since the MTP is an open specification that has been around since 2008
and Google is heavily involved with it.

The Dropbox idea sounds reasonable if I don't mind putting massive
amounts of data onto the Internet. I think I'll try the software data
cable instead.

Thanks.

Just a quick tip for using Software Data Cable: When you fire it up on
your android, you'll get a screen helpfully telling you the ftp command
to run on the other end... but the command they give isn't right...
well, maybe it is for Windows, I don't know. What's worked on Linux for
me dozens of times is this:

$ ftp [phone's IP address] [port number]

Software Data Cable uses a non-standard port for its ftp service... a
good thing, since ftp isn't the most secure protocol in town. Note that
there's a space between the ip and port#... also the first arg is just
numbers.

I wish there was an ssh-based app for android... I've looked for such,
haven't found it. Is that a Windows thing?

Suite à un upgrade en fin de semaine dernière, j'ai rencotré des soucis

Pendant le chargement des services j'ai relevé les messages suivants :

[FAILED] Failed to start Network Manager.

[FAILED] Fail to start Login Service.

Le dernier semble tourner en boucle sur des périodes de l'ordre de 1 ou

Buen dia a todos:

conf en que squid use un método encriptado para a la hora del cliente

2017-02-02 Thread Luciano Moffatt
I am in testing.

I did a new installation and after a single apt-get dist-ugrade, wich
installed three new packages and updated about another forty,I lost my wifi
internet connection again. Cable internet worked fine.

I suspect it has something to do with firmware-linux-free so I did an
apt-get remove and I re installed the package firmare-realtek without luck.

I re-installed the last testing from scratch and I recovered wifi internet.

I could try to find the guilty package by installing one by one, but I was
not in the mood of having to reinstall it.

So, what could I do to report this problem to help it to be solved?

Thanks
Luciano

Speaking of which, I'll share the solution I came up with to implement
a mailing list killfile (ignore list), but I fear it may not be of wide
interest. qmail's popularity has dwindled in the last decade or so,
and I'm using some tools that are not installed in Debian by default.
I couldn't find anything like this in a few minutes of Google searching,
so I had to write it entirely from scratch.

This technique only applies to people receiving email on a qmail system,
where you have normal Unix user powers. If your email goes to your ISP's
system, where you don't have a shell, just an IMAP login, then this is
not going to work for you.

To understand how it works at all, you have to read two of qmail's
man pages.  First, dot-qmail(5):

  (2) A program line begins with a vertical bar:

|preline /usr/ucb/vacation djb

qmail-local takes the rest of the line as a command to supply to
sh. See qmail-command(8) for further information.

Second, qmail-command(8):

command's exit codes are interpreted as follows: 0 means that the
delivery was successful; 99 means that the delivery was successful,
  but that qmail-local should ignore all further delivery instructions;

So, armed with that knowledge, I constructed my ~/.qmail file as
follows:

|./bin/killfile
@imadev.eeg.ccf.org

The system this is running on forwards email to another system, hence
the there. If you're doing this on your final destination
host, then the second line would be something like ./Maildir/ instead.

The important point is that you have two lines, with the first being
a program, and the second being a delivery instruction. The program
runs first, and if it exits with code 99, then the delivery instruction
is NOT used.

Now all that remains is to write such a program. You can do it in any
language you like. I chose Tcl:

===
#!/usr/bin/tclsh8.6

# Load regexes from ~/.killfile
set regexes {}
set killfile [open ~/.killfile r]
while {[gets $killfile line] >= 0} {
lappend regexes $line
}
close $killfile

# Examine headers.
set kill 0
while {[gets stdin line] >= 0} {
lappend out $line
if {$line eq ""} break
if {$kill} continue
foreach r $regexes {
if {[regexp $r $line]} {set kill 1; break}
}
}
if {! $kill} {exit 0}

# Spew headers and the rest of stdin (body) into the spam pipe.
set spam [open "|/usr/local/bin/maildir Spamdir" w]
puts $spam [join $out \n]
puts $spam [read stdin]
close $spam

# Exiting 99 means "don't read the rest of the dot-qmail file".
exit 99
===

Don't forget to chmod +x.

This program doesn't just drop the killed email on the floor. Instead,
it delivers it (locally) to a maildir named Spamdir. So, I created
that, using the command /var/qmail/bin/maildirmake ~/Spamdir

Note also the use of /usr/local/bin/maildir to perform the delivery.
This is a utility that comes from a package named safecat. However, DO
NOT USE the safecat that Debian provides. The Debian maintainer does
not install the entire package; specifically, he does not install the
program named maildir, not its man page, both of which are installed by
the upstream package if you build it yourself. (And he closed my bug
report.)

Of course, that's irrelevant if you don't choose to save the killed
emails. Dropping them on the floor is easier, and won't require safecat.

Finally, since my program uses a file named ~/.killfile to contain the
actual ignore instructions, I created that:

===
^From:.*User Name
===

Make sure you use the correct type of regular expressions for your
program. There are many different varieties. Tcl (recent versions)
uses these: http://www.tcl.tk/man/tcl8.6/TclCmd/re_syntax.htm
Perl has its own superset of Extended Regular Expressions, and so on.

My killfile is just that single line for now, but I made the program
flexible so that I can add to it later if the need arises.

Finally, please note that messing with your ~/.qmail file may cause you
to lose mail if you screw something up, so take appropriate cautionary
steps while doing this. I actually started out by creating a file
named ~/.qmail-foo for testing purposes, and sent messages to
myname-foo at my.domain (*) for testing. When I was satisfied that it was
working, I moved .qmail-foo to .qmail (while also setting the sticky
bit on $HOME as advised by dot-qmail(5)).

(*) Munged because some list archives may censor email addresses, or
apparent email addresses, in a way that renders the sentence unreadable.

I think you actually want a smart router. A Debian box with two
or more network interfaces can be such a thing.

A router can do that better than a switch can.

Depending on exactly what you want, either a switch or a router
can help here.

You would want to put your router in between these. If you can
arrange a third network interface on the router, you could
connect the WiFi hotspot to the router, as well.

That seems an unlikely price point, even for used equipment on
ebay. And managed switches usually have a minimum of 12 ports,
not 5. (12, 16, 24, 32 and 48 are all common)

I would recommend putting in a Debian box between the DSL modem
and the ethernet switch. You will need to learn a little about
routing and IP masquerading / NAT, and you will want to set up
firewalling with iptables.

You can look at traffic in realtime with iftop, which will show
you graphs of the top users by IP address or domain name and
where they are connecting.

You can set individual traffic counters per IP address or per
service or both with iptables.

What you won't get is flow information between local devices,
but as I understand it you are more concerned about traffic
in/out to the Internet at large.

If you set fq_codel as the queue discipline on the interfaces
to the router, you will probably solve most of your traffic
interference problems without mucking with QoS.

You are right, sorry. It seems "Include" is actually only valid in
ssh_config (not sshd) and then only from the version in testing
currently.

If you are making your own Debian packages with all of your custom
config already in them, then you could just put them in your own apt
repository and point all your machines there. But you must have
already thought of this so there must be some reason why that
solution is not acceptable…

Fundamentally they all just result in changes to config files. It is
no different to you making changes to config files personally,
except it is automated.

You could not really say that Debian does not support you changing
config files. What you could say is that if you do change config
files, and the relevant Debian package comes with config file
changes, then dpkg will interactively ask you what to do.

Probably what's going to happen if you DID interactively accept
config file changes is that your config management system will then
revert the config back to what it thinks it should be, losing Debian
changes.

So, if moving to config management what you would normally do is
examine what the new package version wants to change and then
incorporate those changes in your config management instead.

Cheers,
Andy

Advice / recommendations on Inexpensive Managed Ethernet Switches

2017-02-02 Thread rhkramer
I'm sending this to the Debian user list first, even though it is probably
somewhat OT.

Background: Recently I started monitoring how many packets are going through
my LAN to my ISP (Earthlink (DSL)). I have (or maybe had) some thought about
considering a switch to HughesNet satelite service, which has some low limits
(before slowdown) on how many bytes you can download per month (without
looking, I think the limits are like 5, 10, and 15 GB).

Aside: I am actually gobsmacked (I don't think I've ever been gobsmacked
before ;-)--in a week of monitoring, we (my son and I, but with my son gone 8
to 12 hours a day) are downloading 1.5 to 4 GB *per day* (and uploading 100 to
300 MB *per day*).

Anyway, I want to try to figure out where all this data is going to and coming
from, at least in terms of the devices we have on our LAN (I'll discuss those
below), so I'm thinking that a(n inexpensive) managed (Ethernet) switch or two
(discussed below) might help me do that.

Just so you know, I've never used a managed Ethernet switch, nor read much
about them.

One thing I want to do is implement QOS--we have two ObiHai VOIP devices
(which we use pretty rarely, but still want to keep--they might be used for 4
calls / 10 to 30 minutes a week). Sometimes the conversation gets pretty
choppy, probably depending on what my son is doing at the time (I mean, like
watching a video or something), so I'm hoping that QOS would improve that
(assuming the packets from the ObiHai device can be recognized--I would think
they can based on their (private / on the LAN) IP addresses.

Like I mentioned above, the other thing I want to do is start monitoring (at
least on an occasional / diagnostic basis) the bandwidth used by each device.

Layout of the network (for background):

The Earthlink DSL modem (Westell) is followed by an Ethernet (unmanaged}
switch.

From that switch there are three cables:

   * One to a WiFi hotspot that is almost always on (but only used by my son
playing games while watching TV)

   * One to my desk where there are two desktop computers (one Wheezy, one
Jessie), an ObiHai device, and a WiFi hotspot that I turn on only very rarely
(if I need to download something to my phone or similar). (There is an
unmanaged Ethernet switch here to connect the various devices.)

   * One to my son's desk where there are two computers--a desktop with
Jessie, and a Windows laptop, and another ObiHai device. (There is an
unmanaged Ethernet switch here to connect the various devices.)

My first thought is that with a second managed switch, I'd plug it in place of
(or after) one of the unmanaged switches at a desktop to monitor data flows in
those areas for a few days or so.

However, not having ever used a managed switch, I don't know how smart they
are. For example, from the one managed switch just after the Westell modem,
maybe I can monitor the flows to individual devices, either one at a time or
all at once?

I see managed 5-port gigabit switches on eBay starting at a little under $30,
and I'd like to stay close to that as a budget (i.e., ~$60 for 2). Of course,
if a more featureful switch can monitor the data flows to each device from that
(central) location, I could spend that ~$60 for the more featureful switch).
(But there is some value to me to have two managed switches such that one
would serve as a spare for the central one even if being used at other
locations for monitoring.)

New preseeding problems

2017-02-02 Thread Richard Owlett

I have two problems with preseeding.
I did not have them when installing Squeeze to a Lenovo R61.
[R61 hardware problems cause purchase of T430]
I do have them installing Jessie to a Lenovo T430.

Every install now gives the same 2 failures.
1. It fails at the "detect disks" step.
Rerunning that step succeeds *EVERY* time.
2. Very near the end I'm ask to specify a keyboard.
My current preseed, near the beginning has

   d-i debian-installer/locale string en_US

   d-i console-keymaps-at/keymap select us

IIRC there was the same problem with the second line being
   d-i keyboard-configuration/xkb-keymap select us

Suggestions?
TIA

Debian distro for Android (that runs under android in its own chroot or
equivelant) -- several on Play. Read the recent XDA-Developers article.

The poster wanted to replace Android with something better -- Debian. Ubuntu
(Debian-based) has done all the work if one has a compatable device.

Exactly. The central place in my case is a debian source package. It
provides binary meta-packages referencing other packages and some
/etc/service.d/local.conf files, extending the ususal /etc/service.conf
files provided by the service's binary package.

Please check the output of "find /etc -name \*.d" on your favorite
Debian box to see *how* wide this "Include" approach is in use. You
don't even imagine a package not supporting it.

Unfortunately openssh-server doesn't.

They are supported on Debian, but are they supported *by* Debian
as well? Won't I have to expect conflicts with Debian's dpkg
infrastructure?

Of course I will look into the config management tools you suggested.

Good.

If you just want to run the distro, any hardware with support in the kernel
will do it.
If you want a phone, then Ubuntu and Jolla have already done that work. Need
support for the hardware, of course.

To add one which, while not strictly Debian still merits mention, see
Fairphone, which started from the "ethic sourcing of materials" POV,
but is listening to software freedom concerns.

They offer an official path to rooting, and -- who knows? -- might be
talked into supporting efforts to port whateve non-Android to their
hardware.

I find them interesting because their approach is somewhat complementary
to OpenMoko's.

To all folks out there saying "OpenMoko failed": yes, and no. OpenMoko's
people are "out there". The experience has made us richer. Some other
approach might succeed (and will only because it carries some of OM's
genes).

It's all but one giant genetic annealing simulation :)

Android devices almost always have provision for "reflashing" with a new
operating system. If you root it (gain the ability to operate as superuser)
you can install an arbitrary OS. There are Free Software ROMs out there,
like LineageOS (http://lineageos.org/), and in principle there's no reason
somoene couldn't create a Debian distro for Android, but it would be an
enormous job and nobody has actually done so (that I know about).

Thanks to all who kindly replied, it did help. Now I can see everything a bit
more clearly. I'll try to summarize what seems important to me about the
issue.

Deloptes, thanks for your indications about Sailfish project and Jolla phones,
they are very interesting, but what I was looking for is the possibility of
running Debian on those devices, not other OSs. So Ubuntu pre-installed is not
either what I wish. As far as I understand, the capability for Debian - and
other Linux distros - to install on smartphones and tablets could improve, and
probably will, more and more in the next months and years. Some people have
already experienced Ubuntu, and maybe Debian, on some `WinPads'. But, as far
as I understand, this was possible because those WinPads have, at start, like
normal computers, the possibility of choosing to boot from usb pendrive - or at
least from SDcard. So the main problem in trying the installation on other -
Android - devices is probably this, that they don't have that possibility.
Right? Or instead they do have it in some way?

Thanks,

cheers,

When I plug the phone in, I get the notification with 2 suggested
actions. They both read "Open with File Manager" but the first one
opens Dolphin with "camera:..." while the second opens Dolphin with
"mtp:..." in the location bar. When I actually try to navigate to the
folder with my photos, I get a notification on the phone telling me a
device is attempting mtp access... When I click "Allow", I get another
notification pop-up on my desktop with the same two options...

When I actually try to access the photos, I frequently get "process
died" or "I/O error" messages, although sometimes I can actually see
a
photo (not just the file names) - persistence pays off. Moreover the
phone will lock when connected, even if a file transfer is underway.
 This kills the transfer.

To make matters worse, I have photos and videos that I have taken
which show up in the Gallery on the phone and which I can view on
the
phone and see when I remove the SD card and read it directly but
which
 don't show up in Dolphin.

Clearly this is not the way the process is supposed to work. I can
understand the phone requesting a verification for the connection,
but
everything on the desktop side seems wrong:
 - the two actions should be distinguishable by their description,
 - the process shouldn't die and if it does, it should relaunch,
 - the connection should block the phone from locking if locking will
 stop file transfers,
 - there should be a record of the error in a log somewhere. As it is,
all I can find is a lot of systemd journal entries like "Jan 24
 14:01:33 transponder kernel: usb 4-5: usbfs: process 20598 (mtp.so)
did not claim interface 0 before use" which seem to occur before the
 device is actually recognized.
 - all the photos should show up

Have you tried "Refresh" on the phone? If not, then tap on either the
three-dot menu on the upper right or the menu on the lower right. If your
desktop still isn't listed under Available Devices, and it has its own IP
address, you can add it to KDE Connect on the phone -- press either menu,

Hope this helps.

let me guess:

facts:
/var is on the same partition as /
there is plenty of space and there are free i-nodes but anyway you got error
apt-get resulted in "no space left on device"
you rebooted and the error disappeared

There is no PPD specifically for your printer, so one of the Generic
PostScript or PCL ones is what you choose from. Problems could lie
in a number of places: the transport of data over the USB link, the
printer itself etc. The Debian wiki deals with debugging.

When you do an upgrade, apt is smart enough to notice that you have
edited a config file and will ask you if you want to replace your
changes with the new version of the file from the package. You can
also view the differences, etc.

I am not saying this is a solution to your issue, merely pointing
out that the overwrite would not happen silently, so you can take
come comfort in that.

Also through the use of override config files that are included into
the main config file, you can avoid being prompted about changes to
the main config file. For sshd the config directive is "Include".

> What would you consider best practice to keep your ssh hosts (>300)

This is a classic use case for configuration management. You define
your configuration externally, in one authoritative place, and the
config management system takes care of applying that config to all
your hosts.

Popular examples are Puppet, Ansible and Chef, all of which are
well-supported on Debian. To decide which is best for you will
require some independent research as this is a big topic area and
hard to generalise.

Cheers,
Andy

I'd consider *any* software not beeing compatible with ext4 in this day
and age to be horribly broken. Even worse if the software in question labels
itself as "backup software".

Okay, so not a btrfs issue.

Well I suppose it could have been processes holding open deleted
files, though it would have to have been some really big files in
that case, as your filesystem didn't show as being anywhere near
full.

I had installing linux on my Lenovo Ideapad 100S laptop (no surprise,
since it's more or less the same hardware put inside a laptop case).
Looking back, the only serious issue for the install was the 32 Bit UEFI
problem which could be easily avoided if one finds a 32 Bit installer iso
with EFI support (the pre-installed windows was 32 bit, too).
I think the biggest problem with these devices is the limited hardware
support in the linux kernel, though things seem to be improving slowly
but steadily.

Bonjour,

J'ai un deuxième soucis sur deux autre serveurs, j'ai beau avoir changé
d'ip, d'interface réseau (ce sont deux vm), sollicité l'équipe réseau qui
en voit pas les requetes Apt sortir...

impossible de faire un apt-get update && apt-get upgrade

how to deploy common ssh_config and sshd_config settings on all hosts?

2017-02-02 Thread Harald Dunkel
Hi folks,

Problem: Deploying a custom ssh authentication scheme common to
all Debian hosts in the lan appears to be apita, esp. since the
next openssh upgrade might put the default config files upside
down again.

What would you consider best practice to keep your ssh hosts (>300)
in sync wrt the most important config optiones?

openssh is version 7.4

Every helpful response is highly appreciated

I use USB flash drives and 480 GB SanDisk portable drives for some
backups. I started by using ext4 on one of the flash drives. The next
day I tried to boot the computer, but found that the computer hung.
Only at this point did I find out that those drives are not capable of
journalling.

So I either had to use ext4 with the journalling feature disabled or
revert to ext2 for these drives. I chose the latter, as simpler and
less susceptible to errors. I have had no trouble with them since.
