A good thing about freedombox is that you can register your own server
at XXXYYYZZZ.freedombox.rocks for free.

So you don't have to pay for DNS.

You can register at:

https://gnudip.datasystems24.net/gnudip/cgi-bin/gnudip.cgi

with ez-ipupdate you can keep your address when your provider changes
your ip

sudo apt install ez-ipupdate

Now you have your absolute free internet server.

Please run it on a solar powered raspberry pi to keep it really
absolute free ;-)

FreedomBox is a community project to develop, design and promote
personal servers running free software for private, personal
communications. It is a networking appliance designed to allow
interfacing with the rest of the Internet under conditions of protected
privacy and data security. It hosts applications such as blog, wiki,
website, social network, email, web proxy and a Tor relay, on a device
that can replace your Wi-Fi router, so that your data stays with you.

I can tell you it is really nice.

Only problem I had: it is based on Apache, and I am used to nginx.

In my experience syncthing is not good at syncing 10 devices (amd64
debian, 32 bits raspbian, android) and 10 directories.

During tests I pushed syncthing to its limits.

Better restrict it to a few.

Debian repositories.

Maybe I can use section "news" on https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/my_package? I
suppose there is no mention of stable (only experimental, unstable, testing and
backports) into this section because testing becomes stable when the latter is
released? If true, it would be handy to mark somewhere the transition between
both repositories though.

NB: we can take a common example if it's easier to understand each other: copyq

I created a new profile only once.

I then copied the old directories and their contents (recursive)
to the new profile, *not* the files (approx. 64) in the profile's root
directory.

Sound worked again.

So fault must be in a/some file(s) in the root directory of the
old profile.

Then I followed
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/recovering-important-data-from-an-old-profile
to get most of my settings back.

Bookmarks, open tabs, passwords, history, all reappeared.

My extensions showed up, greyed out, I had to reinstall them
manually. This was easy with approx. 10 extensions.

The icons in my bookmarks had disappeared, I use Checkmarks extension
to get most of them back automatically.

So far everything is OK.

(I could check out every file in the profile's root directory to find
the real problem, but that takes lots of time.)

My problem is solved, I have a running firefox 75 with sound again.

Bon dimanche.

I "solved" the problem by rename the ~/.mozilla directory to
~/.mozilla2
Then I started firefox 75, a new profile is created.

I copied recursive all directories under
~/.mozilla2/firefox/.default-release to
~/.mozilla/firefox/.default-release
overwriting all.

Sounds played again!

Then followed this link:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/recovering-important-data-from-an-old-profile

and I believe all settings, passwords etc. are back again, and sounds
keep playing.

The problem thus was in a file(s) in the root of
~/.mozilla/firefox/.default-release

I could not determine which file(s), I did not want to check all 84
files in that directory.

Thanks to all!

Thanks!

I will try the named semaphores.

And you are right, my quick sample did not have a loop.
But I use it in a "real program" that does not quit and then the effect
is that only the semaphore disappears and the shared memory and the
process does not.

The Linux man pages push people towards using POSIX semaphores. In your

Also if I start the program with nohup and & it will stay executed.

By what loop inside ? The program you show will simply end after printing

I highly recommend Nvidia-based cards, if you don't mind closed-source
drivers.
Many (Most?) games with Linux-native ports officially support only
Nvidia by game developers. I think, this is because of the drivers,
their quality and stability.
AMD-based card will usually work too, but (as long as I can remember)
quality of their drivers were something to be desired and drivers for
Linux are under heavy development, but they are open-source.
In case of Proton\WINE, you could get mixed results, because some games
(via DXVK) will work better with Nvidia and some are better with AMD.
"Better" here as in "less graphical glitches, more performance and
stability."
To play modern games in 1080p 60fps with high graphics settings you
would want minimum GTX1660 or better with 6Gb VRAM or more.

Hi, I have two kids and myself playing all kind of games on Steam
mainly, with protonplay (Steam customized Wine version), on regular
Wine, or standalone version (like GOG versions). All of us use AMD cards
and we could not be happier, I would not go back to dealing with Nvidia
drivers for anything. We used "Polaris10" generation cards (like RX570
and RX580), "Vega10" generation (Vega RX 56), and currently "Navy10"
(5700XT).
With Debian Stable you might have to use backports packages for optimal
performances with the latest generation of GPU, but any
Polaris/Vega/RadeonVII should work fine. Here we run Debian Unstable for
the gaming/multimedia machines and everything just works without the use
of any proprietary drivers (aside from the firmware provided by the
non-free Debian "firmware-amd-graphics" package.

For game specific compatibility reports the "protondb" website maintains
a good database [1], but it is only valid for Steam "Protonplay"
platform. Of course there are many native games which run great with
Debian and an AMD card, if you have a few specific titles in mind feel
free to ask.

Hope it helps.

d'inflexible: Sense alternativa a UEFI i sense alternativa a RST.

«Linux (...) has invalid signature».

Semaphore lifecycle?

2020-04-26 Thread e...@coderhacks.com

Hello!

I have a problem with a semaphore and I am not sure whats the problem.
Its about the lifecycle of a semaphore after logout.

The workflow:
A program creates a semaphore and exits.
It is executed by a non-root user.
After execution the user quits the session (logout).

If I do the workflow on Debian 8 the semaphore is still here if I relogin.
Thats what I would expect. The semaphore should exists as long it is not
deleted or the OS restarts.

If I do it on Debian 9 the semaphore is deleted after I relogin and
check (ipcs).

If I do it on Debian 9 with root or sudo the behaviour the same as it is
on Debian 8.

Heres a little programm in C++ for testing.
sem.cpp
int main (void)
{
    printf ("\n*** SEM ***");
    long semkey = 0x99112233;
    printf ("\nkey=%x", semkey);
    long sem = semget (semkey, 1, IPC_CREAT | IPC_EXCL | 0666);
    if (sem == -1)
    {
    printf ("\nunable to create SEM (perhaps an old exists, try to
delete)");

    sem = semget (semkey, 1, 0666);
    if (sem == -1)
    {
    printf ("\nunable to get old SEM");
    }
    else
    {
    if (semctl (sem, 0, IPC_RMID) == 0)
    {
    printf ("\nold SEM deleted");
    }
    else
    {
    printf ("\nunable to delete old SEM\n");
    return 1;
    }
    }

    printf ("\nretry to create SEM");
    sem = semget (semkey, 1, IPC_CREAT | IPC_EXCL | 0666);
    if (sem == -1)
    {
    printf ("\nunable to create SEM\n");
    return 1;
    }
    }
    if (semctl (sem, 0, SETVAL, 1) == -1)        // exactly 1 in
critical-section

    {
    printf ("\nunable to init SEM\n");
    return 1;
    }

    printf ("\nOK\n");
    return 0;
}
---

Compile with g++ sem.cpp.

If the program also creates a shared memory that will stay after logout
if executed by non-root.

Also if I start the program with nohup and & it will stay executed.
But the semaphore disappears.

???

Cheers,
CH

The changelog does not necessarily show when the package was uploaded,
e.g. the package maintainer could prepare an upload (including the
changelog entry) and upload days/weeks/months later.

After uploading the package also has to be (re)built before becoming

What are you trying to achieve?
