Thanks Larry, but ou speak engish as a first language. Some here I
suspect are still in the 80's where every byte costs money. Now its not
so iron clad and I can vent my frustrations by inventing prose that is
gibberish to those who never got phonics in school, and of coarse may
not speak english as first language so they have a double hurdle to
jump. Thats unfortunate when I do as it locks those who are translating
on the fly, out of the conversation and some BWG's. My apologies as I am
forever grateful to those that have learned english as a 2nd or 3rd, 4th
etc language. I missed out on any other languages that may have been
available when I was in school in the 1940's since I quit school shortly
safter the 8th grade and went to work fixing what was then a brand new
technology, tv's, and working as a broadcast engineer starting in the
1960's on till I hung that up just short of 20 years ago. In other
words, I am now both a Certified Electronics Technician, but a certified
old fart at 87 years. I'm growing old, but I refuse to grow up because
acting my age is such a bore. :)

Thank you all, I did get the help I needed.
Cheers, Gene Heskett.

Near as I can tell: Gene has purchased a computer, and wants to remove
the hard drive from it, but he can't figure out how to open its case.

Gene, you might try Google searches of the form "how to open HP all-in-one".
Some of the results that I got for this are Youtube videos. I didn't
watch any of them, but you could try a few and see if any of them
look applicable to your device.

I've not found it easy to answer this question from any
documentation normally installed, though the answer might be
implied by what's there. AIUI from what I've read, mdns4_minimal
only considers resolving .local and 169.254.x.x addresses,
and is designed to prevent such address queries being sent to
the Internet nameservers. Any other addresses, like those
you used, bypass mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] entirely.
You can demonstrate this to yourself by typing:

18:21:14 ~ $ :
18:21:29 ~ $ getent -s hosts:mdns4_minimal hosts foo
2 18:21:31 ~ $ :
18:21:33 ~ $ getent -s hosts:mdns4_minimal hosts foo.local
2 18:21:41 ~ $

where you can see the non-lookup of an unknown host takes no time at
all, whereas adding .local causes a five second timeout before the
real lookup fails. (My prompt includes the return code.)

Cheers,
David.

It failed here saying that it was not compatible. Also searching for
choqok in gnome-software didn't find it.

Does it bring its own libraries with it? Maybe it requres something from
debian 11?

When I think of "the best of all possible worlds," I think of Candide

Before the upgrade, comment out the sources.list line for Zoom - optionally,
remove it altogether. Upgrade to Debian 11 then redownload / reenable Zoom.
[It's not "naughty" - Debian supports the right of users to use non-free
software, just doesn't package it in main].

It might be simpler to do it, unless there are some unforseen

return in nsswitch.conf not working

2021-10-25 Thread William Edwards

Dear reader,

This is the line for hosts in my nsswitch.conf:

  hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns mdns4

Both 'files' and 'mdns4_minimal' return NOTFOUND for a lookup:

  root@http-lyr01:~# getent -s hosts:files hosts williamedwards.nl
  root@http-lyr01:~# echo $?
  2
  root@http-lyr01:~# getent -s hosts:mdns4_minimal hosts
williamedwards.nl

  root@http-lyr01:~# echo $?
  2

Quoting the 'exit status' section in getent(1):

2 One or more supplied key could not be found in the database.

However, the 'dns' database (which comes *after* the return statement)
is also used, as my lookup succeeds with the result that the 'dns'
database returns.

Could anyone explain why that is? I would expect the lookup to fail
because of the 'NOTFOUND=return'.

William Edwards

Hello,

As you noticed, Chokoq 1.7.0 is available as a binary to install from
upstream by clicking the button "install on linux". (1)
But it is mentioned that the button works only with Appstream
application stores. (2)

To install 1.7.0:

- Start by uninstalling Chokoq 1.6.2 (if do no not do so, you risk
problems with concurrent versions 1.6.2 and 1.7.0).

- Install an application store like plasma-discover for KDE or Gnome-
Software for Gnome (perhaps some CLI programs like appstream would do
also).
- Once the app store is installed, click the Chokoq "install on linux"
button on the web page, you will be prompted to open it with the
installed app store. Or you can directly search Chokoq in the app store
to install it.

(I use Gnome, Gnome-Software is installed: when I click on "install on
linux", I am asked if I want to open Gnome-Software. If I open it, I
can search for Chokoq and 1.7.0 is available to install from the store)

As a side note, if you want to retain a certain level of security, you
will need to upgrade to Debian 11 Bullseye before July 2022 or June
2024, depending on the full or reduced scope of the support you can
cope with (3)
