People with more experience of preseeding might comment on
whether this suggestion would work. I notice that this option
is available, which might be what you want:

# When disk encryption is enabled, skip wiping the partitions beforehand.¹
#d-i partman-auto-crypto/erase_disks boolean false

You might wish to combine this with:

"Boot parameters can also be used if you do not really want
to use preseeding, but just want to provide an answer for
a specific question. Some examples where this can be useful
are documented elsewhere in this manual."²

PS: Marco's suggestion is officially sanctioned:

  ┌──┤ Erasing data on SCSI1 (0,0,0), partition #5 (sda) ├──┐
  │ │
  │ 100% │
  │ │
  │ The installer is now overwriting SCSI1 (0,0,0), partition #5 (sda) │
│ with random data to prevent meta-information leaks from the encrypted │
│ volume. This step may be skipped by cancelling this action, albeit at │
│ the expense of a slight reduction of the quality of the encryption. │
  │ │
  │ │
  └─┘

I presume the quality reduction is in the hiding of metadata,
eg, being able to see the highwatermark of data quantity written,
rather than in the encryption of the actual data.

Personally I wouldn't (and don't) do it. It sounds like a bunch of
work only to end up with things that get logged anyway (as you
noted) plus the risk of missing other interesting things.

I don't find writing logcheck filters to be a particularly big time
sink. But if you do then it might alter the balance for you.

Only you can decide how to allocate your resources -- knowledge, skills,
spare parts, spare computers, tools, equipment, time, money, etc..

Trouble-shooting is both an art and a science. Given some undesirable
issue (CD drive does not work), one approach is to start at the top
(system of hardware and software), and work towards the bottom
(transistors, plastic, steel, machine code, etc.); testing each level as
you go. Hopefully, at some point you find one or more components with
defects (to whatever degree of certainty you find acceptable). When you
repair or replace the components, the system works correctly.

Reboot the computer and press the appropriate key to enter the computer
motherboard firmware (BIOS/UEFI) CMOS Setup program. Navigate the user
interface to find a screen that lists installed drives. Type the exact
contents of that screen into a reply.

Is the external USB drive the drive you are having trouble with? If so, it
sounds like you have a media problem -- the media you are using is not

I'll just add (or amplify?) one point -- have you tried a variety of CDs?
Sometimes "burned" CDs, or rewritable CDs (in either case, from some media
manufacturers will not work, yet a "printed" (that is a CD created in a
"factory" by "industrial" methods (i.e., not with CD burning software) will
work.

It would be helpful to know if some CD works va. no CD works -- if some CD
works, then it is presumably not a software / configuration problem -- if no CD
works, it could be the hardware (or hardware related -- e.g., is one of the
cables loose?) to the CD drive.

  Changes

The su command in buster is provided by the util-linux source package,
instead of the shadow source package, and no longer alters the PATH
variable by default. This means that after doing su, your PATH may
not contain directories like /sbin, and many system administration
commands will fail. There are several workarounds:

 * Use su - instead; this launches a login shell, which forces PATH
to be changed, but also changes everything else including the
working directory.

 * Use sudo instead. sudo still runs commands with an altered
PATH variable.

o To get a regular root shell with the correct PATH, you may
use sudo -s.

o To get a login shell as root (equivalent to su -), you may
use sudo -i.

 * Put ALWAYS_SET_PATH yes in /etc/default/su (create it) to get
an approximation of the old behavior. This is documented in su(1).

 * Put the system administration directories (/sbin, /usr/sbin,
/usr/local/sbin) in your regular account's PATH (see
EnvironmentVariables for help with this).

Don't use su unless you know very well what you are doing.
