Piped package list

2004-08-11 Thread Aaron Peters
I seem to recall seeing once that one of the package
tools (dpkg, apt, or another, I don't remember) could
save a package list that could later be piped as input
to return a system to an identical list of packages
with one command. Am I crazy, and if not, how is this
done?

TIA,

Aaron

Trouble with GTK fonts

2004-02-23 Thread Aaron Peters
I'm having trouble with GTK fonts on a
testing/unstable system. Basically, fonts in every
GTK-based (1.2) app come up as compeletely garbled.
I'm using XFree 3.3.6 (due to an old video card) and
xfs- I don't know if this is the problem. I'd be
happy to send a xwd screendump in order to illustrate
garbled, and provide any other pertinent info.

TIA,

Aaron

Re: Mac-Linux filetransfer

2002-09-05 Thread Aaron Peters

Slightly OT, but how does one reverse those pairs in the ethernet cable to
allow direct connection? I'd be interested in connecting my notebook to a
desktop under my desk, but I'd rather not use a hub to do it.

   Okay, here's my problem:

My PC apparently can write CDs okay. My Macs, more and more,
cannot. Technically, they come back with medium error. Some of
it may have to do with disk fragmentation, but that's a problem with
my Macs.

I'd like to do two things: (1) start backing up to the PC (Woody), (2)
write my CDs from the PC.

My Mac and my PC both have ethernet, and I am aware that an ethernet

 cable

can be made with a couple pairs reversed to run directly from one to
the other.

However, that still leaves the question: how do I set up file
transfer between a Mac and a Linux PC?

Load the appletalk module(modconf) and then install netatalk and then
set it up. Your mac will find the Linux box via the finder on the mac
and then you can copy the files from the mac to the linux box. At least
 this is one way.

 Hope this helps,

 Eric
