Re: Exploit in Upgrade Chain?
600 on /etc is technically more secure than the default 755 with normal POSIX systems, not less. If this is an exploit, it's one that locks things down tighter than they should normally be. :) Giacomo is correct that these incorrect perms can cause other issues, though not security related ones that I can think of. Are there a different set of perms you had set on /etc manually? Any other indication that you've been exploited, or just a hunch based on circumstantial weirdness based on unexpected /etc privs and bastille? Best regards, -Chris Boyd Stephen Smith Jr. wrote: On Wednesday 11 February 2009 23:26:45 Stan Katz wrote: I updated/upgraded both my AMD64 and AMD k6 Etch machines between Feb 10-11, 2009 using Lenny test. Both picked up a symptom I haven't seen since the lpd exploit of the 1990's. This symptom manifests itself as either a random escalation of the etc directory mode up to 600, or a consistent escalation to mode 600 upon reboot. My /etc is mode 755. Why would that be a problem? Some user/programs may need to read data out of the directory and root (the owner of my /etc) certainly needs write permissions. I don't remember why the lpd exploit did this. If this is an exploit, it shakes my confidence in debian online updating. I don't see how a 600 /etc can be exploited. Do you have any other records that would indicate you are exploited, or is this just fear-mongering? Also, the Bastille firewall on the AMD64 began locking down port 80 after about 10min of operation. Adding 80 to all interfaces didn't help. Only shutting down Bastille cleared the block. Sounds like a bug in Bastille. Can you reproduce reliably? Have you checked your configuration? If both, has you filed a bug yet? I fear this is another indication of the exploit. How/Why would these be related? Has anyone else experienced this misbehavior after an upgrade? Not here. I've been running Lenny for a number of months. Any suggestions, other than a complete disk wipe on both machines? In any case, where would I go for a trusted rebuild, if there truly is a sabateur in the ranks of the Debian maintainers? I'm forwarding to debian-security; perhaps they will have suggestions. This topic is more appropriate for that list than debian-user anyway. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? gui unreadable after bad shutdown
My system fails to start properly after a bad shutdown (not using shutdown/power cut), the graphics are incorrect and full of lines at login point. No way of reading the screen as no real images to see, the initial boot text is fine but on entry into GUI it all goes wrong. This has happened before and sorted itself after waiting until the 21st boot to sort out file integrity but not now. I have installed a new HD as master and re loaded the latest dvd download but still the same thing when previous HD ran as slave. Now it has been 8 hrs trying to no avail, this is on i386, please advise, my work is in limbo until i sort this, TIA -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Convert Red Hat 7.2 to Debian 3.0
I am about to cobvert a system from Red Hat to Debian. Idealy I would do a fresh install from scratch, but am trying to avoid this. While at the Linux Expo in NYC last month, the Debian Booth people reccomended a program that I think they reffered to as Debian Hijack or something similar, to convert the directory structure, etc... prior to performing a Debian 3.0 upgrade. Does anyone know what program they are reffering to and it's source? Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks! -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? OOPS on woody/2.4.18-bf2.4 #1 Mon Aug 4 00:43:03 UTC 2003 i686 unknown
Dear guru's, I'm getting an OOPS on a recently installed Debian box. Before upgrading to the latest woody 2.4.18-bf2.4 it would crash hard, killing interrupt handler. Now, it gets an OOPS but keeps on running. The problem is I cannot run anything that looks at the process table, or that process locks up. These crashes happen between days and hours apart, seemingly at random. The only other symptom I had noticed is that if I did a find /, it would occasionally pause for about 7 seconds, and processes blocking on diskio would start climbing before returning to normal. Almost as if it was resetting the SCSI or IDE bus, but nothing was left in logs or dmesg. I left vmstat 1 running overnight, and though it stopped functioning after the OOPS, it was not during a period of high i/o or cpu. The machine is SMP capable, but using only one processor currently. Mobo is Tyan Thunder LE S2510 (Dual PIII) http://www.tysys.se/products/tyan_th_s2510.html. Why is it crashing? Thanks in advance for any ideas. Current plan is memtest86, and installation of a kernel from an identically equipped machine that is having no problems. FW: Sound Blaster Live Support
Sound support seems to be one of the less well documented areas for Linux in general and Debian in particular (go ahead, flame away and point me to the how-to's I missed!). I know I SHOULD be able to get a happy configuration with my Sound Blaster Live - but I'm not getting very far. The frustrating part is the lack of consistency - sometimes I can get things to work, and sometimes not. I'm trying to get comfortable with Debian - to actually get a feel for how it works (without messing with code or re-compiling the kernel!) and how to support it. So I just keep re-installing to see which steps mess me up less than others. Can someone point me to a resource to understand the sound support available in Debian? Stuff that will explain to me the differences between OSS, ESD, ALSA, etc.? And then of course adding a desktop environment like KDE or GNOME adds another layer. BTW, I'm using Woody - I think. I started messing with my sources.list, just for fun, and I may have partially upgraded to Sarge or Sid. Daniel -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Linux and 3DFX (prolly off-topic)
Hi. I've just installed a Monster3D pass-through for my Diamond Stealth 64. I installed GLIDE 2.x, Mesa 2.6 (Quake doesn't seem to like 3.0) and a 3dfx module (which creates a '/dev/3dfx' device) -- my kernel is 2.0. I can run programs compiled with libc6 (not with libc5 however, I just get a seg fault). The various 3dfx test programs run OK, and so does Quake II running it's GL renderer. The only problem I have is that the card will only work at the 640x480 resolution -- nothing higher, nothing lower. The 3dfx test programs simply crash, and Quake II reverts back to 640x480 if I try and change. I know that there's nothing wrong with the card because I can switch properly in Win95. Any ideas ? Ricoh MP6201S Buslogic Flashpoint anyone using this ?
Hi, From the subject, you will get a good idea of my message :-) I bought a Buslogic Flashpoint controller a while ago and then a Ricoh MP6201S CD/RW drive. The two never worked very well together, though when I was using them under Debian 1.3 they did what I wanted them to do. They wouldn't work with anything but mkisofs and cdrecord and as I didn't want to make music CD's this was fine. I upgraded to Debian 2.0 a few months ago and backed up my drives etc before doing so to CDROM. Since the upgrade, I have been unable to write to the CDROM. I have applied patches from the manufacturer to the PROM on both the SCSI card and the CDROM, I have also tried using Kernel 2.0.36 and I still can't write CD's. I can read them fine. I realise the Flashpoint controller support is flaky under Linux but I did have the system working. I now can't write anything to the drive. It may be a processor/speed problem. I've been in touch with the developer of cdrecord and also with the unofficial Ricoh site but have not had any success there. I've been through all the settings in my BIOS and in the SCSI card bios and can't see anything that would cause the problems. In short it all looks fine (+ it did partially work before). What I'm trying to find out is if there is anybody on the list using the same combination of HW and if they had any success. To summarise :- SCSI Controller : Buslogic Flashpoint SCSI CD/RW : Ricoh MP6201S Processor : AMD K5 running at 90MHz. Ray, Thanks for the input. Some things are making a lot more sense here. I'll make comments below. On Wed, 7 Oct 1998, Raymond A. Ingles wrote: On Wed, 7 Oct 1998, Bedrock LAN Administrator wrote: Greetings folx. I have an old HP ScanJet Plus connected to my parallel port that I cannot seem to get working with Debian 2.0 no matter what I try. If it's the scanner I'm thinking of (8bit grayscale scanner) it needs a proprietary interface card to function, which isn't much like a parallel port, except for the cable. Does it work with DOS/Windows? DOS? Whassat? Winders? Whassat? *smirk* Seriously, though, I'm afraid that I can't test this scanner under either DOS or Windows, since I ditched all of that over a year ago (ain't it great to be MS-Free? visit www.i-want-a-website.com) The ScanJet Plus is not listed as one of the supported scanners at the SANE website. I'm pretty sure you're going to have a lot of trouble getting this to work. You may have to write a driver yourself. I noticed before that it was not explicitly listed, but I was hoping that some of the newer drivers might be backward-compatible. I took a look at hpscanpbm, which is a command-line program to scan from HP scanners direct to a file, and which the SANE HP driver is based on: This program controls Hewlett-Packard ScanJet series scanners. It captures the image based on command-line parameters, and provides it as a thresholded, dithered, grayscale, or full-color Portable Pixmap. This is not a device driver; your ScanJet should be connected to a SCSI adapter that is supported by Linux (which does not include the card that came with the ScanJet). This program uses the generic SCSI interface, so this feature must be available in the kernel. I'll look into getting this app. Do you know off-hand where I can get it? If not, I'll do a web-search when I get a chance. :) It doesn't look promising... architecture, with the I/O card in an ISA slot. Is this I/O card the one that came with the ScanJet? Does it work as a regular parallel port (can you plug a printer or perhaps a Zip drive into it?) The I/O card is actually a multi-I/O.. EIDE+Floppy+Serial+Parallel. All are enabled and working properly. Yes, I have had a dot-matrix printer working on the parallel port before. This time, however, I modified my /etc/printcap to contain only one remote-printer definition pointing to my other linux box. Thus, lpd should not be trying to use this parallel port and should not be conflicting with the scanner software or device. If so, it's just barely possible you might be able to get this to work. From what I understand, the Zip drives talk some funky SCSI-over-parallel language. *If* you can get that parallel-to-SCSI converter module, and *if* it talks the same way to the ScanJet, it *might* work... I'm aware of the SCSI emulator kernel module... I forgot to check that a moment ago while rebuilding my kernel, though... I can go back and try that tomorrow. Also, I *do* have a SCSI-Parallel adapter kicking around which was given to me with the scanner. I also have a SCSI card floating around which is known to work with the NCR-5380 module. I suppose that I could add those two components, but at first, this seemed like overkill... perhaps now it is the way to go. misconfigured). I created a link /dev/scanner - /dev/lp0 when I run xcam and tell it to use either pnm:0 or pnm:1 (what are these?) it ^^ These are dummy scanners, for testing purposes. When you scan with them, it just reads a graphics file in PNM format off the disk. This makes perfect sense now. Re: lowmem installation trouble
I've had a similar hardware configuration running linux before, but that was Slackware 3.0 (when *it* was considered NEW). I've not tried Debian with only 4M of RAM (and hercules card), but I can tell you that Debian 2.0 liked my 386 with 8M RAM. The Debian installation process, however, does take up a LOT more RAM than slackware or even RedHat does... at least, based on my experience. I'm not sure how much the lowmemrd image really does require now, even though the standard used to be 4M. I hate to steer you away from Debian, but I the only solutions I can suggest is to either upgrade to 8M (a $20 investment) or try another distribution like Slackware. This, however, maximizes the space you can have for dos and still allow you to boot into linux without LILO complaining. Note also that you'll have to move your kernel into the /boot directory, modify your /etc/lilo.conf file to reflect that you moved the kernel, and then re-run lilo before attempting to reboot linux. I used a calculator to produce the values show in the table above, so your actuall numbers will vary slightly.. but the principle is the same. ;-) Oh, as far as which one to install first, go for debian.
