Re: Different language per user in MATE and change default lang of greeter

2018-01-04 Thread Alex ARNAUD

Hello John,

I've configured a multilingual system based on Debian Jessie last month.

The steps I've followed are:
1) Install the language pack of your targeted languages like
"task-english", don't miss to install the language pack for Firefox,
Thunderbird and LibreOffice if needed.

2) Enable the locales of your users and move the default locale to
"None" with :

sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales

3) Log in with one account

4) Edit the file "~/.dmrc", replace the locale with the locale you want.

5) Do the strep "4" for all the users

You have to reboot your computer after applying the configuration to
avoid cache. IMO, you should login into all your users to ensure that it
works or test the procedure on a VM first.

Could you let me know if it works correctly for you and what issues do
you have to be sure that my Jessie procedure continues to work on Stretch ?

Best regards.

Hi list,

My system locale is 'C.UTF-8'.
Obviously, this is not desirable for the users.
So I want to change the language per user in MATE, so user1 would have
language 'a', user 2 lang 'b' and so on.
Thanks to the list I have all language pack installed for both users
('a' and 'b').

I have two questions:
- How can I set the language independently for each user?
- How can I change the default language at the prompt when I need to
enter the credentials (lightdm-greeter, I believe)?

All of this is on a Debian 9 installation with the packages 'debian
desktop environment' and 'MATE' ('1' and '6').
I'd like to do this using the command line, that way, the users don't
have to do it themself and I don't need to logg into each one.

5.2 was removed from the system and replaced with 5.0.40.

How to enable Plymouth ?

2017-11-20 Thread Alex ARNAUD

Dear all,

I'm trying to enable and make Plymouth working on Debian 8.9.

I've followed the steps describe on the Debian wiki here :
https://wiki.debian.org/plymouth

I've added "splash" to the kernel parameters and enable vt_handof and
gfxplayload.

This procedure works well on Debian Stretch but I'm not able to make it
to work on Jessie. I'm using the Kernel from backports (4.9).

Does anyone of you have an idea on how to make Plymouth to work on Jessie ?

Best regards.

It seems that the maintainer is overworked and cannot provide Jessie
updates for chromium anymore[1]. Somebody else said he might be looking
at it[2], but that was six weeks ago and nothing happened so far.

So while it is not clear when chromium in jessie will be EOL'ed, it
seems advisable to switch to some other browser for now (if you want a
package from Debian, firefox-esr is the only option).

2. https://lists.debian.org/debian-security/2017/08/msg00010.html

Thanks for the observation and the references. I was not aware of this.

Here I am using both Firefox and Chromium since sometimes I need to test
some things in both browsers (for example some WebRTC application such
as Jitsi Meet).

Thanks for your reply.

You can also install Google Chrome from the Google Debian repository.
It's up-to-date and it works for Jessie.

How to use Mate in multi-screen ?

2016-09-05 Thread Alex ARNAUD

Dear all,

I'm a visual-impaired people and I'm trying to use the multi-screen
capability of the Mate desktop. I've added panels on both the first and
second screen to be able to launch applications or anything else more
easily.

The problem is : when I unplug one of the screens, all the configured
panels of this screen appear on the screen which remains active. When I
re-plug the screen, the panels gets back to its initial location,
separately on the two screens.
I've made research on Internet and I've checked the dconf database
without results.

My question is : why do all the panels configured on two screens
separately appear on one of the two screens when one of them is unplugged?

Best regards.
