MIME Encoding

1998-04-27 Thread Alex Monaghan
This may be covered in a Howto or a FAQ, if so please can you point me in the
right direction.

There is a mimedecode package in the standard 1.3 installation CD.

Is there something to go the other way ?

I want to create an auto-reply program to attach a MIME encoded MS Word
document to the message and reply.

I can do this with a simple text message, but would like to automate the
attachment.

Thanks

Sharing a single logon with Unix & NT

1998-01-21 Thread Alex Monaghan
Help,

This is not 100% Debian specific, but should apply to Debian as well as other
Unix flavors.

I've been tasked with rolling out Windows 95 & NT, but I still need to provide
NFS access to some Unix boxes (we use Beame & Whiteside NFS).

Ideally I'd like to be able to logon once to NT and / or Unix via Windows 95.

Any suggestions ( except junk NT )

RE: Unidentified subject!

1997-12-15 Thread Alex Monaghan
I had a similiar problem when printing from Solaris.

There is a registry setting in 3.51 (sorry can't remember which one) that needs
to be tweaked to allow incomming LPR jobs.

Have a look on Technet (or the MS Website) searching for LPR & NT

Once the registry is set printing is OK.

I have been trying, with no luck, to print to a printer shared from an
NT box. I was wondering if someone could make some suggestions. The
two machines involved, an NT (lager) box and a Debian Linux (stout)
box, are located on my LAN at home. Lager can get to shares on the
Stout via samba, with no problem. I can ping the Lager from Stout. The
actual lpr command goes fine, but it just sits there. When I check the
queue with lpq, it indicates lager is not up.

Can anyone help?

Yes, while the BIOS allows two IDE drives on different IDE busses, my
experience has found that most OS's don't like that arrangement. Try
re-arranging the hard drives like this:

Primary IDE bus:
first HD
second HD (or cdrom drive if only one HD)

Secondary IDE bus:
third HD (or cdrom drive if only two HDs)
fourth HD (or cdrom drive)

Next, if the BIOS is a "plug 'n' pray" and the motherboard has the peripheral
controllers built-in, go into the BIOS. Look for the PCI/plug and pray menu
and go there. The submenu should allow you to lock IRQs by telling the BIOS
that they are "legacy" IRQs. Of course, save it and reboot.

[contd]

Looks a good suggestion the BIOS is plug n pray, I'll change the BIOS setup and
give that a try.

Unfortunately, I didn't get to read this mail until after I came back from my
parents, so I'll have to try it in a few weeks.

Thanks for you help

1.3.1 Setup with ULTRA DMA disk

1997-11-11 Thread Alex Monaghan
Help,

I attempted to install Debian 1.3.1 from the Linux Systems Labs "Official"
Debian CD onto my father's PC.

This installed OK from the boot floppy made from the CD.

When booting from the rescue disk it finds ide0 at irq14 and ide1 at irq 15 and
all works OK, when booting via LILO or via the install process's boot disk it
finds ide0 at irq 7 and the md driver fails to load and the boot process stops.

Any suggestions ?

I'm going over again at the weekend and would like to get Linux running if I
can.

vacation program

1997-09-11 Thread Alex Monaghan
Help,

I think there was recently a discussion about this, but I
deleted it as I wasn't interested at the time.

I'm looking to provide a simple system generated Email reply to
a specific address ([EMAIL PROTECTED]). I wish to send a
simple message :- Thankyou for your enquiry I'm available in 3
days time ..

I've experimented with the vacation program supplied on the
Debian 1.2 CD, but when modifying the .forward file as indicated
in the vacation man page, I get a pipe error (whatever program I
try and forward to).

I'm using smail (as supplied on 1.2)

Am I missing something obvious ?

Can I do this via an alias from smail ?

Is there a HOWTO ?

Should we be identifying ourselves as Linux when on non Linux platforms ?

If this is OK, then I can probably get some time on a Sun (assuming there's a
suitable Solaris package available) in addition to 14 hours a day on my home
network.

For anyone who's not yet looked at this. It is really easy to get running, a
simple
cron entry will take care of all the transfers and there's no noticable
difference
in performance of my 486DX100 server at home.

Thanks to those who offered suggestions.

The final problem turned out to be that it had not
included the 3c509.o in modules.dep,
manually inserting it and rebooting caused it to
run OK.

Can anyone suggest why ?

I installed with kernel 2.0.27 then upgraded to
2.0.30 via patches. I installed the
modules via make modules ; make modules_install, is
there something I missed ? (lilo
was run to install the new kernel as the default
boot kernel)

faxing from Win 95

1997-08-14 Thread Alex Monaghan
Sorry if this has been asked before.

I want to be able to fax from my Windows 95 desktop, ideally via the
default exchange client, but via a print driver would be OK.

I currently have my modem on my Linux server running regular mail & news
transfer and would also like to be able to use a fax service without
having to move the modem connection.

Is there such a tool ? If so where ?

Note: This is my personal system, not my work system.

3C509 Problems

1997-08-11 Thread Alex Monaghan
Help,

I've got a problem with my 3C509 & Debian 1.2 (2.0.30 kernel).

I've tried this card loaded in the kernel and also as a module. Until
the last few weeks it has worked OK, but now it just won't load. I've
not made any changes to the machine or Linux in the mean time (except
re-compiling the kernel to try it as part of the kernel)

I can manually load the module after boot time.

Any suggestions of where to look ?

I can run the card OK under Win 95, so I know the card is OK.

Checking for logged on users

1997-07-21 Thread Alex Monaghan
I'm experimenting with a timer on my home mail server.

I've got a simple script to dialup and send / receive mail & news.

The timer switches the system & modem on and waits then switches off. The
system
runs a closedown script via cron before the timer is due to switch off. When
I'm
running locally the timer will be on a manual override.

Any suggestions of how I can check in my closedown script to see if I've got
any
logged on users ? I use pop3, news, samba and ip masquerading from other
machines
and can safely assume that the timer will be on override when any of these
services
are active.

Thanks

Smail configuration

1997-07-14 Thread Alex Monaghan
Is there a simple way to get smail to forward mail to my ISP ?

Currently it appears to do it's own name resolution and delivery,
under Win 95 all mail got sent to the ISP to do this.

I am currently getting some delivery timeouts. I'd rather pass the
non-local delivery to my ISP. I still want to be able to deliver
[EMAIL PROTECTED] & [EMAIL PROTECTED] locally.

Thanks

News Server Configuration

1997-05-22 Thread Alex Monaghan
Hi,

I have a simple setup on my home network. A 386DX/40 running Debian 1.2 (with
2.0.30
kernel). I have a 486DX/66 dual booting between Slackware (will upgrade to
Debian in
time) and Win 95 and a 386SX/25 running Win 95.

I have got a ppp dialup on the Debian box and have got mail forwarding running
OK so I
can now read mail from the Win 95 machines and queue it back onto Linux for
dispatch.

What I am trying to do is to run a simple news server so I can collect/post
news when I
do my mail collection and make this readable from the Win 95 machines.

I'm running inn as installed from the Debian 1.2 CD.

I can't seem to get news running OK, I've put my news details into the
get-news.conf, and
running get-news seems to connect to my ISP's news server and download
messages, but they
seem to then dissapear completely.

Is there a HOWTO or a FAQ that covers this configuration ? I've had a look
through but
not been able to find anything suitable.

PPP Problems

1997-05-08 Thread Alex Monaghan
This may be a FAQ, if so please point me to the
right place.

I have kernel 2.0.27 and could not make a PPP
connection.

I can dial and login to my ISP OK, but can't seem
to get a PPP session.

When I use my old Slackware 1.3.x PC on the same
modem with the same setup I get a connection and a
PPP session.

The only difference I can see is when I cat
/proc/net/(can't remember which one)

on the Slakware one I get ppp0-15 as well as lo and
eth0, on the Debian I get only eth0 and lo.

I've applied the 2.0.28,29&30 patches and
re-compiled (making sure that ppp is included) but
still the same result.

When checking the logs I get the pppd startup
messages as on Slackware, but get LCP a timeout
message.

Any suggestions ?

Don't know about Debian, but assume it's similiar to Slackware.

I have a few DE-100's and these are recognised by the NE drivers. If your card
is
not found then you could always put the card sig into the code and re-complie
the
kernel. This worked with my DE-001, but the card died.
