texlive-latex-base configuration error
Hello, list! I am running testing i386. Upgrading livetex, apt gives configuration errors: I have looked around the web, and in the debian-user archives, and there is a similar bug that appeared a long time ago, like in 2007 and 2008, but it seemed to be fixed. In any case, I have found nothing helpful for this, the 2010 bug. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling different packages, tex-common, texlive-common, etc. The one it seems to be choking on unavoidably is texlive-latex-base That's the one that breaks things, I think. I have enclosed the output of apt below, and also the logfile it produces. Paramétrage de texlive-latex-base (2009-7) ... Running mktexlsr. This may take some time... done. can't switch to external monitor after KDE 3.5 upgrade
Hello, I am using a Dell Latitude D600 with Debian testing. The external monitor switch is in software, and it seems like xorg does not recognize it. I just did the apt-get dist-upgrade to KDE 3.5 and rebooted and everything seems OK except Fn-F8 does not have any effect (it's supposed to switch to external monitor). However, what is interesting is that if I use Ctrl-Alt-F4 (for example) to switch to the fourth virtual console, then Fn-F8 *does* work. But as soon as I switch back to the 7th virtual console (which the X server uses) the image automatically switches back to the LCD display and Fn-F8 doesn't have any effect again. So it seems like this is a problem of the X server. Does anybody know how to go around it or fix it? Avec la version 32 bit (i386) ca marche sans problème. J'ai arrêté d'utiliser la version AMD64 il y a quelque temps. openoffice cannot find java...
Hello, I just installed openoffice 2 and gave it a try. It says javaldx: Could not find a Java Runtime Environment! but seems to open all right. However I can't figure out how to do anything useful in it like for example opening a new writer document. mouse wheel behavior in KDE 3.4
Hello, I recently upgraded to KDE 3.4 in testing and it seems like the mouse wheel behavior is different. Now, when I place the mouse over an application button on the KDE panel and I turn the wheel, it switches **berween** applications. Before, it used to switch between the different windows of the **same** application. I liked it better before and I want to go back to that behavior but I cannot find a setting in the Desktop Manager, and google shows nothing. Suggestions? impossible to connect to DNS
Hello, I have been using Debian testing on my laptop for a while now, and networking-wise everything went smooth until today it all of a sudden refused to connect to the DNS server and therefore refused to connect to anything else unless provided with the IP address. For example, I can set up IP adresses with the corresponding names in /etc/hosts and it connects just fine (this is what I did for ftp.fr.debian.org) but it for some reason cannot connect to the dns server. The server itself is fine because all the other machines on my LAN use it no problem. When trying to probe with nslookup it gave this error: nslookup: undefined symbol: isc_net_pton I therefore thought I got hacked, also keeping in mind the fact that I have not done a dist-upgrade for about two months because it kept trying to wipe lyx and I absolutely needed lyx. So maybe there was some security bug that got fixed but that I was exposed to because I didn't upgrade. So I did apt-get update apt-get dist-upgrade this took a while because there were about 300 packages to install or upgrade. Then apt-get clean apt-get install --reinstall [all packages on which nslookup depends, meaning all the libraries it links to] There's maybe about 9 of them, the most notable of which is libc6. But the same thing happens. No DNS, except now I don't get the weird undefined symbol error anymore. ping just gives unknown host unless you give it an IP address Anybody have any idea what could be wrong? I have also tried purging and reinstalling the resolvconf package. No change. -- Alexandru CabuzDoctoral StudentUniversité Montpellier IIFranceTel: +33 (0)4.67.14.47.34--- Please no Word or Powerpoint attachments.Send plain text, rich text format, html, or pdf instead. KDE messed up after dist-upgrade
Hello, I did my daily apt-get upgrade a couple of days ago, and I noticed there were a whole bunch of packages being held, most of them kde. Trying a couple of them by hand revealed they were in conflict with other packages that needed to be removed and whatnot. So I did a dist-upgrade. Now I got kde 3.3.1 which is great, but a bunch of stuff doesn't work anymore. KDE configuration center doesn't work, and the kaddressbook opens but it doesn't open my regular addressbook file even though it is still in the same place it's always been, and has not changed. Also kmail is misbehaving (I can still send emails such as this one though) I am afraid of what might happen if/when I reboot. My question is: how can I go back to the KDE 3.2.3 or whatever that I had before and that _worked_? I have a complete list of the packages that got updated during the infamous dist-upgrade. I copied and pasted part of the output of apt into a file. What is interesting is that all these packages that seem to be bad, broken or at least buggy, do not have this weird behavior in AMD64 sid unofficial on alioth (I run that on my home computer ). In fact they work real nice. So somewhere between sid and testing they acquired a bunch of bugs...? Or maybe it's just that the unfinished AMD64 sid port is more stable than the about-to-be-officialy-released-as-stable sarge??? What's going on here? Has the decision been made to keep sarge in testing forever? Why did the developers feel the absolute need to have KDE 3.3.1 in the next stable release? Cos it looks like it's gonna be a while before 3.3.1 is going to be anywhere close to stable grade... Alex. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Re: network unreachable
I'm not sure what the routing tables are... I'll try man route and see what I can glean. Both machines are on the same hub. Oh, and a new development, I tried it while I was writing this email. I can ssh to both of these machines but from home, which is a completely different network than the one at the office. I am writing this from home. Now I am not exactly sure what this means, but I have a strong suspicion it may have something to do with the crass incompetence of the new sysadmin that just got hired and started changing things around in the lab intranet, switching people over to DHCP, changing the lab firewall, and other annoying stuff. Also of note is that I can ssh to both machines but I can't ping either of them.. they seem to be stealthed to pings cos I get no response at all. This means the firewall blocks icmp requests or whatever, but leaves port 22 open... So it seems the machines are fine, it's just the office network that's messed up. Sweet. network unreachable
Hi, I got two computers in my office, both using Debian Sarge. One 2.6.9, the other 2.6.7. They both can ping the outside world (like google.com), but they can't ping each other. Let's call them machine A and machine B. When I try to ping B from A I get connect: Network is unreachable When I try to ping A from B I get From [IP of machine B] icmp_seq=1 Destination Host Unreachable From [IP of machine B] icmp_seq=2 Destination Host Unreachable From [IP of machine B] icmp_seq=3 Destination Host Unreachable and so on and so forth... I can browse the internet from both of them, read my mail, etc. But I can't for example ssh to either of them. I have even turned off the firewalls on both of them, and I still get this error. Something is weird, because I have installed sarge on both these machines numerous times and never have I gotten this kind of error... Any suggestions? Alex.
Re: Usb not a valid block device
I would suggest moving to a 2.6 kernel, why not 2.6.9 for example, and make sure you load the scsi_mod modules: sg, ide_scsi, sd_mod, usb_storage. Check with lsmod. Alex. Le jeudi 9 Dcembre 2004 10:05, a crit: Dear debianers, I've a Debian3.0 r2 installed. I updated my kernel to 2.4.18. Each time I want to mount my usb mass storage device. mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/usb I always get the error code not a valid block device. Read from some maillist that I should install the sd_mod module. Once again, I compiled the kernel again. I can see the sd_mod.o file. But still I can't load the module. Would someone be kind enough to give some hints? Thanks in advance. Sincerely, Kun

I just have problem of compiling kernel. The standard debian way of compiling kernel is using the make-kpkg. openoffice in chroot
I set up a chroot last night following the instructions in the howto. By the way, that howto needs some updating. There are some details that are not mentioned. Like when and how to run base-config to set up the chroot environment, and whatnot, and when and how one should run aptitude to install all the packages. The debootstrap just installs a base system. Also it's not clear if the proc and /tmp filesystems should be put in the fstab in the 64 system or in the chroot. There are a couple of things where the howto does not specify where you're supposed to do it, inside or outside the chroot. I managed to install it though, though I ran aptitude and installed a bunch of stuff BEFORE I ran base-config, and while apt was installing packages I was constantly getting messages complaining about locale not being defined. My locale is supposed to be french. perl: warning: Setting locale failed. perl: warning: Please check that your locale settings: LANGUAGE = fr_FR:fr:en_GB:en, LC_ALL = fr_FR, LANG = [EMAIL PROTECTED] are supported and installed on your system. perl: warning: Falling back to the standard locale (C). locale: Cannot set LC_CTYPE to default locale: No such file or directory locale: Cannot set LC_MESSAGES to default locale: No such file or directory locale: Cannot set LC_ALL to default locale: No such file or directory Hundreds of times. Now when I try to run openoffice, the window appears, with french menus for just a fraction of a second, then it switches to english. And when I try to go to File New, to create a new document openoffice displays this to the console and then hangs. I18N: Operating system doesn't support locale Maybe it's because it was installed before the locale was set up for the chroot so it didn't know how to configure itself... or something. So what is supposed to be the correct sequence in order to set up a 386 chroot correctly, and is there a way to get openoffice running now, without reinstalling the whole chroot? Check out http://www.jukie.net/~bart/debian/amd64/ https://alioth.debian.org/docman/view.php/30192/21/debian-amd64-howto.html I installed it just last week, and managed to get most things to work grace to the 2.6.9-9 Debian kernel. The port is a Sid port, so you get the latest and the greatest but it can be a pain to set up at the beginning. There are a couple of broken packages in the true64 archive that are a pain: sed and base-config. But you can get around that. Openoffice won't work in 64bit, so you gotta install a 386 system in a chroot and run it inside that. Alex.
ata_piix and ide_generic weird behavior
Hello, I have spent about the last week setting up the Debian AMD64 Sid port on my brand new AMD64 nforce3 box. I was wondering if anybody can explain the following behavior. I have two ide DVD drives, one a regular ROM, the other RW. Since the ide_generic module does not support DMA, I learned that I needed the ata_piix module. That's great, but when I put both of them in my /etc/modules file, in any order, reboot, and then try to run hdparm -d1 /dev/hda for example, it refuses, says /dev/hda: setting using_dma to 1 (on) HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted using_dma= 0 (off) The way to get it to work is to put only ata_piix in the /etc/modules file, and then, after it boot, you log in, and then do modprobe ide_generic And then, hdparm works and everything is cool. But what is the difference between putting a module in /etc/modules and loading it with modprobe after boot? Is it safe to load ide_generic only after boot, like in the /etc/profiles file? I am using the 2.6.9-9 Debian kernel image. Alex. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: AMD 64 and Debian
How difficult, would you say, was it to get it installed and get everything working. Do you play any games? Specifically do you play any Windows games using cedega? Are you happy with your configuration? Would you recommend this configuration to others? Right now I'm pretty happy with it. The difficulties I encountered were mostly because of my revolting ignorance in certain respects and also because of particular things about my hardware, nothing major. But I do not play any games, however I should warn you that ATI's proprietary driver set has not been ported to AMD64, so if you want to get one of those cards, especially from the high end, stick with 386. Check out http://xoomer.virgilio.it/flavio.stanchina/debian/fglrx-installer.html Right now I am in the process of installing 386 into a chroot to be able to run openoffice, flash plugin, java plugin, and install the ATI drivers I mentioned above, and see if there is any performance difference. it's going smooth up to this point. Not that I know anything about gaming, but just one question: since most games are designed for windows, why don't you just play them in windows, you know, double boot... Is there any particular reason you want to try them in linux? And AMD64 Debian unstable moreover? You think the performance might be that much better that it will be worth the hassle? Is anybody else's doing the same? If not, then which log files should I look into? I should mention I am using sid, amd64 true64 port on an Athlon 3200+, MSI nforce3 chipset, mozilla 1.7.3. AMD 64 build absolutely necessary for install on Athlon 64?
I am trying for a few days here to boot my brand new Athlon 64 box on a Sarge Installation CD. But since sarge is not yet ported to AMD 64 (http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/ports-status) I tried IA 64. The computer refuses to boot off of it. It just hangs instead. At first I thought it's just a bad motherboard or bios or something, but now I tried those CDs in my Dell Pentium M laptop, and the laptop does the same thing. So I am starting to wonder if it isn't just an architecture problem. It won't boot off CDs that were not built for its architecture... In this case, will I just have to get used to the fact that I won't be able to install Sarge AMD 64 on this box until the AMD64 build is complete? Is there no way around this? And is this normal behavior in the first place? Thanks. Alex. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: why debian
No idea, but it does sound like a good starting point for the control freaks among the powers that be... This is true. Didn't think about it like that. Regulation. Ugh. Well I guess it's an idea that needs some more thought... Alex. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: why debian
Just my 2 cents, but trying to make everything relative won't do. There are plenty of standards by which things can be judged (whether anti-aliasing, interface design or meringues smothered in strawberry sauce) though whether someone likes them or not is merely a question of taste. Some outfits put a great deal of effort into being user-friendly for new or non-technical users (which includes setting up networking and putting help icons on the screen) and others do not. Some people believe that reaching out to such users requires a quite different approach from appealing to IT professionals or developers' peers. Good design can be assessed objectively and it does matter. I think I agree with that, even though I have no intention of moving away from Debian. I don't think what scares people away from Debian is the visual polish and that kind of stuff. It's the deeper configuration stuff that is NOT obvious and that forces you to learn about the system. For example I installed Sarge on my laptop, it did not correctly detect radeon graphics card, and loaded default 800x600 resolution. I had to go into my X configuration file and add 1024x768. Other people might not have known where this file is and what it contains. Then the fonts were ugly so I had to look for and install the ones I wanted and configure X to see them and use them. Then there was no firewall by default so I had to figure out how to set up a firewall. Had to check out the iptables and ipchains man pages, decide it's way too complicated and that I don't have the time or the will to become a firewall specialist, and finally find a reference to firestarter and guarddog on some mailing list. All this at the cost of a few hours. Then I entered the long hard slog of trying to get power management working. To this day I have not been able to do it, and i'm leaving it for next week, or next month, when I'm gonna have the time to reconfigure and recompile the kernel. Hell, I'm not even sure which kernel I should start with in the first place. And it took me hours to figure out the difference between vanilla, and other flavors. It always seems to be understood. I'm supposed to be doing a doctorate in physics at the same time, and a bachelor's in computer science was not a prerequisite last time I checked. And this is my favorite. Trying to mount a USB key. There is no usb key device, like there is one for cdrom. It gets mapped to a scsi device (for some reason), the first one, because I don't actually have another scsi on my computer. /dev/sda1, not /dev/sda. Terrific. Except on my new computer at home that does not work because I have scsi hard drive so USB key gets mapped to /dev/sdb1. Of course. Not /dev/sda2. And that's in 2.6.8. In 2.6.9 it's something completely different like /dev/uba, but it doesn't work because 2.6.9 is in Sid so it's still buggy. Count another hour or two of confused googling to figure all that out. Then, I gotta configure pppoe. So I call pppoeconf, configure the thing. Doesn't work. I have to edit manually my /etc/network/interfaces and /etc/ppp/peers/dsl-provider files. Restart the network with the command /etc/init.d/networking force-reload Do pon dsl-provider. Doesn't work. Restart my computer. I see two pppd processes, two pppoe processes, and ifconfig says the interface is configured no problem, everything should be dandy, but isn't. I kill all the processes, I do pon dsl-provider again. WORKS. After a few hours of different attempts. Of course, this is for somebody that knows about ifconfig, about where the configuration files are, what the commands are, etc. Otherwise you'd be completely lost and run screaming from Debian. With me it's different only because I am notoriously stubborn. And even if all this is just my bad luck, or maybe I'm just dumb, you can't tell me that all the people that I run into, and they ask me what I use, I say, Linux Debian both on the laptop and at home, their reaction, even if they use Linux too is: Debian! Jesus, you're not kidding around!. You can't say they're all crazy. Debian is challenging. It's not for beginners, or it's for really really stubborn beginners like me. Besides I love the philosophy behind the thing, and apt is awesome. But I don't expect everybody to be like me. Some people I have seen on some of these lists however, especially some of the very knowledgeable, DO. Sometimes I hear arguments like: I like to spend hours configuring everything by hand, myself, in text mode... Debian is great for that. Therefore Debian is great period! Re: why debian
The failure of 'democracies' (even this quoting will not hold it for ever) is in the fact that everybody believes to be entitled to judge everything, and to issue a directing opinion on every matter and aspect of life. As a result, the average level constantly is lowered, to accomodate the least capable that voices a desire. Evidence of that is overwhelming if you can see. A masterpiece of English literature would be considered a failure now, for containing too long paragrapahs and thus ideas too heavy to be handled by the average reader. Right on! Even though... The idea I think in a parliamentary democracy is that the mediocre mass does not actually make decisions directly. They choose, locally, representatives, who are supposed to be specialists, and to make the best decisions in the interest of their base, even if sometimes the mediocre mass does not follow. The problem with the choosing process is that to be chosen you have to want to be chosen. People that arrive in positions of power do it because they want to do it. They want power. This is a corrupting factor from the start. Like DOuglas Adams said, a person that is capable of getting himself elected president is the least appropriate for the job, I forgot the exact quote, but that is the gist. In Debian though, the equivalent of the parliament are the developers. They don't get elected but this is good because they get to be developers by being good at what they do, not by making the ignorant mediocre mass THINK they're good at what they do. Also, they do it because they just want to help make a better system, not because they have some secondary vested interest in that, like remuneration, perks, building a career, or whatnot. Also the qualifying criteria in the developer community, which is to say, knowledge and expertise, are much more clearly defined than in politics, where the qualifying criteria are things like the ability to spin things your way, the ability to give the impression of authority, to be seen in a certain light, or other skills more properly connected to the acting profession. In general the ability to make people think about you what you want them to think about you. Politicians are professional impostors, or if you prefer, poker players but this won't get you very far among programmers. To be completely fair though, in a thread related to this one somebody mentioned that developers for debian DO get certain advantages, like for example putting that on their resumé, and it seems that it works too, meaning, they get hired. It's starting to have a little prestige to be a debian developer, so maybe, to a small extent developers do have at least a small vested interest. I'm not sure how much, but as a matter of fact I don't think it matters because Debian being a completely free, open, non profit stucture, it is impossible to make career INSIDE Debian. You can spend some time, some formative years in debian, and then use that experience for later on in life, if you want. That's not a problem. This fact has no impact on the spirit of Debian. The social contract ensures that Debian will never become a purpose in itself (like bureaucracies have a tendency to, in the opinion of some famous guy I forgot who), but it will always serve its user base. Exactly in the same way for example that there are companies out there commercializing distributions based on Debian. Using Debian for something from the outside is no problem, that is exactly the idea. The freedom codified in the social contract has exactly that purpose, to protect people's right to use Debian unfettered by any limitations. Whether they use the software to get work done, like users do, or using the experience gained developing Debian to advance one's credentials and career, like some developers might, or using the body of software to commercialize a Debian based distribution... The core idea, the freedom, is only reinforced. Debian and actually the whole free software community would be an awesome case study in political theory. I DO have one possibly non-positive thing to say about Debian. Debian serves its user base and does so brilliantly. Its user base however (even the non developers) consists of people that while not gurus, know quite a bit about computers. Ever since I have used Debian I have found myself learning more and more about how a system works, about all kinds of stuff. I would die of shame if I ever got the classic rejoinder: RTFM. So I find myself spending hours googling and reading FAQs, howtos, tutorials, mailing lists, and manuals. Problem is I'm not a programmer, I'm a physicist. So sometimes I ask myself: why do I spend all this time learning all this stuff? Do I really need it? Couldn't I get by easier with Windows or maybe some nobrainer distribution? Bottom line, is :**Does using Debian increase MY productivity?** I don't really have an answer... Long term, for sure, a big YES. But for right now,... I'm not sure. The learning curve
Alex.
network install over nVidia nForce 3 ethernet interface
Hello, My question concerns the correct course of action when installing Sarge on a computer whose only way to connect to the internet is through an nVidia nForce 3 ethernet interface which needs the driver provided by nVidia at http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_nforce_amd64_1.0-0292 without having to burn 14 CDs. It is a script called NFORCE-Linux-x86_64-1.0-0292-pkg1.run that's supposed to install the driver, given that you have a basic system installed and a 2.4 or 2.6 kernel and the sources of said kernel installed. I have tried to install a basic system and then worry about the driver later, but the installation didn't work. I set up the partitions, everything going smooth, until reboot. After reboot I got flooded with messages like nv_sata : Primary device mounted nv_sata : Primary device mounted nv_sata : Secondary device mounted nv_sata : Secondary device mounted nv_sata : Secondary device unmounted nv_sata : Secondary device unmounted nv_sata : Primary device unmounted nv_sata : Primary device unmounted Or maybe it was loaded instead of mounted... I forgot. Anyway, something like that. Thousands of these messages flying by so fast you could barely see them. I rebooted, trying to redo the install with another kernel (in this case the 2.6 I gave the linux26 command at boot) and aside from the red screen that was annoying but otherwise didn't seem to mean much, I retried the installation except that now the installer will just stop for long periods of time while doing various things (inexplicably, since it didn't do it the first time) with no hard disk or cdrom access. It just sits there, and then after like 15 minutes it picks back up and continues... For example now I am staring at a screen Starting partitioning tool and the little progress indicator is at 55% and it ain't moving and there seems to be no activity. 15 minutes ago it was at 33 or something, and not moving, then it jumped to 55 and now it's sitting... Oh , there it goes, now it's at 72... and sitting... Normally this should be almost instantaneous. Should I just try another build of the netinstall CD or (and this would really be sweet) is there any way to get a hold of a netinstall CD with the forcedeth driver corresponding to the particular kernel ON IT already...? A man can dream can't he? Oh by the way, in the meantime, grub and the master boot sector got all messed up somewhere along the way, and so I can't even boot into my windows partition I had installed for recovery purposes... :-) now I lost my windows partition too.
