A new computer...and some questions...
I'm getting a new computer, and I have some is this supported questions...I've referred to the hardware how-to, bu some of this stuff is bleeding-edge so I couldn't find it. If anyone knows the answers to the following, I'd appreciate it. The computers are HP (for a variety of reasons): Are the following hardware devices supported in the current debian kernel/X: 1) Ultra ATA 33 (UATA) hard drives 2) Cirrus Logic Advanced Graphics Port (AGP) video 3) Pentium II processor. Linux Java (1.1.3) question...
I have a question that has not been asked on the java-linux list, but has not been answered. So I'm asking here :) I am running Debian stable, and using the JDK package downloaded from Hamm. I have had no problems until this... I'm writing a RMI program. It works on other platforms (Win NT, HP UX). But when I try to start the server on Linux, I get an AccessException. According to the docs, an AccessException occurs when the server tries to register on a remote machine - this is not occuring, I am registering on my local machine (using the host name that I set, and confirmed using the gethostname command). The programs compile fine - they simply don't register. And yes, I am running rmiregistry Any ideas or general comments. If anyone wants to help, I can email some source code (since it's not completely topical to this list, I won't post it unless a great number of people ask). MSDOS files...what to do...
I have copied some MSDOS text files (documents, java source files) to my Linux box. So, of course, they all have ^M at the end of each line. At our SCO box at work, we have a dos2unix command that would fix these...does Linux have a similar tool, and what package is it in? -- ++ | Andrew Akins | | Home: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - http://www.ames.net/igor/| | Work: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - http://www.cms-gt.com/| ++ | May your villages remain ignorant of tax collectors, and may your | | sons be many and ugly and strong and willing workers, and may your | | daughters be few and beautiful and excellent providers of love | | gifts from eminent families that live very far away, and may your | | lives be blessed by the beauty that has touched mine. | |- Number Ten Ox, Bridge of Birds | ++ -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Thanks...
I would just like to offer thanks to everyone that has helped me over the last week in setting up my Linux box. I'm new to the Unix world, and so I had many questions that I'm sure were simple or easy. On another mailing list, I might have gotten nasty emails about RTFM or read the [EMAIL PROTECTED]@% FAQ or what are you, stupid? (no joke...I've gotten these before). But not here. Everyone who has responded to my questions has been polite and helpful. My Laptop is now running completely the way I want it to, nice and stable with X, StarOffice, Java 1.1.3, Postgres and Netscape 4.03. And it all works better and faster than my old Windows95 box. It appears at lot of what I was hearing on the grapevine about Linux is true :) Again, my thanks... PPP Dialup
I was wondering what people use for handling their PPP dialups. I've been using simple pppd, which works well. But, it has no feedback - I have to simply wait, and run ps to see if it makes the connection. What tools or programs (if any) would provide more information/feedback? Rebuilding the kernel
Now that everything is working right, I was toying with the idea of screwing it all up :) Basically, I'm considering rebuilding the kernel to add in some things I'm missing (sound) and removing some things that I don't need (SCSI support, for one). I've read all the howtos and got all the files, so I'm pretty sure I have a good idea of how to do it (but I'm open to suggestions, if anyone has them). My problem is this - my *$#$ laptop manual doesn't say what the settings of my ESS688 sound chip are (IRQ, Mem base, etc). And I no longer have any other OS on my machine (I dived into Linux head first...), so I have no easy way of running a program to find out. The menuconfig script is asking me for these settings (obviously)...if I provide the wrong numbers, will the machine boot (without sound), or will it completely crash? And if I supply the wrong numbers, will I have to recompile the kernel again, or are their config files that can be changed? Any insight would be helpful. Thanks. XISP package problem...
The xisp package (or perhaps the xforms0) has a problem... I install the xforms package, which xisp depends on. However, it installs as xforms0, and so xisp isn't finding it (I'm getting a dependency error). On a related note, when I installed xforms, I got the following when it was configuring: ldconfig: warning: can't open /usr/X11R6/lib/libforms.so.0.18 (No such file of directory), skipping it generates the same error for the /usr/X11R6/lib/libforms.so, /usr/lib/libtkstep.so and /usr/lib/libtkstep4.1.so files. The files do exist, but they appear to be symbolic links rather than real files. Any ideas? Or is this something that should be refered to the package maintainer(s)? YANQ (Yet another newbie question...)
I hope I didn't send this out twice... I'm new to unix (let alone debian) and I can't seem to figure out two problems (which I think are related...) 1) Where do I put programs (daemons) that I want to automatically startup, ie., what is the Autoexec.bat file of the unix world? I looked in .bashrc and .bash_profile, which seem to set a lot of enivronment variables, but I don't se if you can put programs in this. In particular, I need to startup my postgres postmaster daemon no matter what account you're logged in as...so I need a system-wide init file. 2) I'm using Fvwm2 and FvwmButtons...and I must be doing somehting wrong. I can start my StarOffice applications from the command line (ie. swriter3 ) but the `Exec swriter3` command attatched to FvwmButtons or a menu don't seem to work...I'm wondering - are the enivronment variables (there are many for StarOffice) visible to fvwm2, and if not, how can I make it so? (I've set the variables in both .bashrc and .bash_profile). Sorry for the certainly simple questions, but I can't seem to find the answers in the simple FAQ I found... ++ | Andrew Akins | | Home: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - http://www.ames.net/igor/| | Work: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - http://www.cms-gt.com/| ++ | May your villages remain ignorant of tax collectors, and may your | | sons be many and ugly and strong and willing workers, and may your | | daughters be few and beautiful and excellent providers of love | | gifts from eminent families that live very far away, and may your | | lives be blessed by the beauty that has touched mine. | |- Number Ten Ox, Bridge of Birds | ++ -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . TkSTEP...anyone done it?
Now that my system is up and running stable, I thought I'd mess around with it :) I'm interested in installing TkSTEP. I've got Tk4.1 and Tk4.2 installed using the standard debian packages. I was wondering if anyone out there in debian-land has installed TkSTEP. And if so, what steps are involved? There doesn't seem to be a TkSTEP package, so I'm assuming I gotta do this by hand. The continuing laptop video saga...
Once again, thanks to everyone who has offered me help setting up my CL-GD7543 for X. Current Status: It works! The magic combination that worked was to treat the board as a GD5428 with the noaccel option. Ta da...800x600 in 8 and 16 bpp modes! Current Problem: The mouse cursor is garbled. It appears as a square box (cursor sized) filled with random static. Annoying Newbie Questions...
Can anyone direct me to a newbie FAQ or manual/guide to using (not installing) X? I imagine my questions are pretty rote, and I'm sure someone has written them down somewhere...but all of the HOWTOs and such that I have found are on installing X (which is done! Yeah!). An example: When I start emacs, it starts up with it's title bar off the screen (off the top). Can I set its default geometry somewhere so I don't have to type the geometry stuff every time I want to use emacs? I'm VERY new to Linux/UNIX - I've been a windows user for a great many years. More Laptop Video stuff...
Thank you to everyone who has helped with this problem... I got my laptop (with a cirrus logic GD7543 video chip and 800x600 TFT LCD screen) to work in 800x600 mode using the VGA16 server. Works like a charm, but of course it's only 16 colors. When I switch the server to SVGA, the screen is shifted up about, oh, 20 pixels. That is, the top 20 or so pixels of the image are off the top of the screen, and the bottom of the screen has a blank area about 20 pixels high. the VGA16 server had this problem to...but xvidtune fixed it (just changed the timings). But xvidtune (and even manually) can't seem to shift the image down in SVGA. I've tried many suggestions that people have offered: * setting chipset to be clgd5436. I just get a blank screen * setting noaccel and no_bitblt options. Nothing happens The modeline is as follows: Modeline 800x600 39.99 800 840 968 1000 600 601 605 644 +hsync +vsync This works in VGA16, but not in SVGA. Laptop Monitors
This may not be an appropriate place to ask this, but does anyone know the appropriate frequencies to use with Laptop TFT LCD monitors? I chose the SVGA monitor in the XF86Setup program - and it works, but it only gives me 320x200 resolution. I know this chipset (CL754x) and monitor can do 800x600 - that's what I ran windoze in. But none of the higher monitor choices seem to work - the screen freaks out. xvidtune doesn't work...it core dumps. I checked in the various config files, and XF86Setup is only giving me 320x200 settings...any ideas why? Hey, it works great in 320x200! :P Side note: xdm doesn't work. I can do startx, and everything is fine. xdm does nothing...I immediately get the prompt back. Is this a big problem? If so, what might be wrong? Or can I just use startx (and how do I get it to automatically start -- when I get the resolution right). -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Re: debian-user-digest Digest V97 #992
Two questions: Can the JDK.1.1.1 package be installed on the stable (bo) distibution, or will it only work with the unstable (hamm). And if it only works on the unstable, has anyone had any luck just installing 1.1.1 from the Java-Linux ftp site? How about the Netscape4 package? Will it work with stable or do you need unstable.
