empty file details field `MD5sum' apt/dpkg bug, not sure which yet, and I've no idea why doc-linux-html seems to be its favourite target today. RE: Stable - 2.4 kernel, best path?
Hello, You can upgrade the kernel without messing with anything else - all you have to do is either a) download the latest kernel-source packafe (apt-gettable) and compile in your needed options, make kpkg and so forth, or b) download the tar.gz from www.kernel.org - what I generally do, although it's unpatched. Compile in your needed options, make clean, etc, and reboot. There are a number of good walkthroughs online - a google search for kernel recompile or something should give you more than enough options. One note as an afterthought - if you've never done this before, and aren't sure what options you need to enable, copying the .config file from your current kernel source directory into the new one before configuring can be helpful - at least you'll have all the same options chosen as before. Good luck, Steve If someone is going to compile the kernel, what advantage does the Debian way have over the procedure in the kernel compile howto?

RE: stable - testing
I changed 'stable' to 'testing' everywhere in my /etc/apt/sources.list file. When using testing, I always left the deb lines for stable in the sources.list file. That is to say that I think rather than replacing your stable lines with testing, you should leave them there and add lines for testing. For some reason, I remember thinking it wouldn't work without the stable lines in there. I may be wrong about this, so hopefully someone else on the list can confirm or deny it. I didn't see any follow-ups to this. This seems like an important piece of information. When upgrading from potato to woody, should the potato lines be kept in sources.list? It's too late for me, but the info could help the next person that tries this.
RE: stable - testing
When I upgraded from stable to testing all I did was change the stable to testing in tht sourceslist and away you go.. So do you need the stable lines in sources.list, I sy no. I agree. RE: kde in woody
I have installed woody (upgraded from potato) and now I would like to install Kde. My question is what is the magic apt-get command to start the whole kde install ? apt-get install __?__ I'm in exactly the same boat. I did an 'apt-cache search kde' and I see task-kde near the end of the list which looks promising. Why don't you try 'apt-get install task-kde' and report back so that I know it's safe ;-)
RE: kde in woody
Hi Bob! I did: #apt-get update #apt-get install task-kde E: couldn't find package task-kde what should i do? Now that's weird. Are you sure you're running Woody? Do a 'apt-cache search task-kde'. I see three entries when I do that.
RE: Potato-Woody HOWTO?
I've just subscribed to the list a few days ago and I'm seeing many messages about people migrating from the Stable to the Testing version of Debian which makes me think that it's not such a painful process as I had thought. Is there a HOWTO or something (perhaps in the archives?) explaining how to do it? (passing from the stable version to the testing version) Can anyone enlighten me? Welcome. I just did this yesterday. It was so simple, even *I* couldn't screw it up. In /etc/apt/sources.list, change all occurrences of 'potato' to either 'testing' or 'woody'. The difference is subtle. See Colin's message that he posted a few minutes ago for the distinction. Then, do 'apt-get update', followed by 'apt-get dist-upgrade'. Done. I chose not to upgrade XFree. One problem at a time.
RE: kde in woody

RE: Potato-Woody HOWTO?

stable - testing
I have a Debian stable system, but I'm thinking unstable might be in my future. This morning I thought I'd perform the simple task of compiling pan from cvs. Trying to do the autoconf / make thing led me to install several packages, which required even more packages. I through up my hands when I needed a new glib, which required a new libc, which wouldn't install due to some other failed dependency. Okay, I'm thinking that stable is just too painful and maybe I should be using testing. Reading through the archives, I'm rather scared to move to testing. Seems many people end up with something broken when they attempt this. But, soldiering on I changed 'stable' to 'testing' everywhere in my /etc/apt/sources.list file. I did an 'apt-get update'. But when I attempt to do an 'apt-get upgrade', I get the following error: 45 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 229 not upgraded. Sorry, but the following packages have unmet dependencies: debianutils: PreDepends: libc6 (= 2.1.97) but 2.1.3-18 is to be installed E: Internal Error, InstallPackages was called with broken packages! bear:~# So now I seem to have a half-broken system that can't be upgraded. First, you want to have the Debian FAQ by your side : www.debian.org/doc/FAQ. Chapter 9 covers kernel stuff. Then grab the package kernel-package. This is the thing that makes upgrading kernels really easy. Now you need kernel source. You can get this from kernel.org, or you can get a deb package containing the source. I did the latter yesterday and upgraded to 2.4.7. Doing an apt-get for the kernel source package just gets you a compressed file for the kernel sources. You have to unpack it by hand. No biggie. Now comes the hard part. You have to select your kernel build options. Do a 'make xconfig' and you'll get a gui that presents you with endless choices to make. If you have a .config file, you can click on the button that reads this file and it will show the options set in your running kernel. If you don't have a .config, then you need to go through each of the choices and decide what you want in your new kernel. The process takes about 10 minutes of clicking. Now, following the faq, you'll do a 'make-kpkg -rev, followed by a dpkg --install, reboot, and you have a new kernel running. Always have a working boot floppy, just in case ;-) -- Robert Koss, Ph.D. | Training, Mentoring, Contract Development Senior Consultant | Object Oriented Design, C++, Java www.objectmentor.com | Extreme Programming

mount permission problems
I've been struggling for the last few days trying to get my wife's Win95 laptop to access her Quicken files that I have on a fat16 partition on my linux machine. There is something about 'mount' that is eluding me. This was working fine in RH for years. When I changed to Debian last week, it stopped working. Samba seems to work fine.
