Keyboard Shortcuts in Gnome
Has anyone got the keyboard shortcut (Applications-Desktop Preferences-Keyboard Shortcuts) assigned to Take a screenshot or Take a screenshot of a window to work for Sarge distribution (latest release with 2.6.8 kernel, gnome 2.8 and keyboard: pc104, us, xfree86)? Default setting has the Print key assigned to Take a screenshot and AltPrint to Take a screenshot of a window. It appears to be a hot-key problem. The (Actions-Take Screenshot) works and the application /usr/bin/gnome-panel-screenshot will capture the entire screen or the active window. Also, I can assign a keyboard shortcut to AltF12 to pop up the Home Folder. However, if instead I re-assign AltF12 to Take a screenshot or Take a screenshot of a window - nothing! Is this a Gnome or Debian issue? There's a recent Debian bug report (#384475) which addresses this issue; however, there is a claim that the PrtScr button does work. It's not clear in the bug report which distribution (sarge, etch, etc) this report addresses. I have found this problem on two separate Debian (Sarge) systems. -- Carl -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

re: OpenOffice.org 2.0
Alternatively, you could just download your favorite non-free JDK (as long as it is Sun's) and OOo from their home page and install it yourself from the upstream RPMs. -Roberto I did this, and it works quite well. But it took up a huge amount of space on my harddrive. -Mark I doubt that the unofficial Debian distribution is any smaller. The OOo2.0 distribution takes ~284MB (OOo2.0 shipped with stripped executable files) compared to ~219MB for OOo1.1.5 (which was about the same for OOo1.1.4) plus the required jre weighing in at ~87MB. Remember 2.0 added a database engine to the mix.The openoffice website indicates that 2.0 will take 200MB disk space on linux - which was somewhat optimistic. -- Carl -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. CD burner and automount experiences/misadventures w/ kernel 2.6.8 on sarge
I just recently upgraded from woody to sarge and struggled to get my CD burner (SAMSUNG CDRW/DVD SM-348B, ATAPI) and automount to work. Since I could not find a cogent and concise description in any one document, thought I would share with the list how I finally succeeded with the kernel 2.6.8. I originally thought I would have to upgrade to a more recent version of the kernel since I found numerous references to a problem with the kernel 2.6.8 and atapi cd burners. Fortunately, this turned out not to be the case. Following the Sarge release notes [http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/release-notes.en.txt] for upgrading from a previous release, I upgraded to sarge then installed kernel-image-2.6.8-2-686. I removed all references to ide-scsi from '/etc/lilo.conf' and '/etc/modules' and added ide-cd, ide-disk and ide-generic to '/etc/modules'. Added (or verified) my username was a member of groups: disk, cdrom, floppy, plugdev and adm (not sure if this last one is necessary). Use adduser username group as root to do this. The gnome-volume-manager provides automount for removable devices. It, in turn, requires udev, d-bus (dbus-1, dbus-glib-1) and HAL. Some (if not all) of these packages were added or upgraded in the distribution upgrade. However, the gnome-volume-manager was not installed to start (auto-magically). I added it to the startup menu for my gnome session using: Applications-Desktop Preferences-Advanced-Sessions (Startup Programs tab) Can now automount pre-recorded CD's and burn new ones using the Nautilus file manager. :-) -- Carl -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Re: Debian with read-only /usr
Dave - You could always mount the `/usr' filesystem on the server as readonly and use the `remount' option of `mount' to remount `/usr' as writeable during an apt upgrade. The other option would be to export `/usr' readonly, i.e., in the `/etc/exports' on the server. Dave Sherohman said on March 15, 2001 at 10:22 (-0600) I'm looking at NFS-mounting /usr for a largish number of machines, with the basic idea that then I can just keep the binaries on the central server up-to date and the workstations will all follow along with (hopefully) a minimum of effort. I'm a little concerned about apt, though... I wouldn't expect it to be very open-minded about /usr being read-only. Re: emacs memu bars in linux console
The following is from the Emacs - Menu Bar section of the Emacs Info page: On text-only terminals with no mouse, you can use the menu bar by typing `M-`' or F10 (these run the command `tmm-menubar'). This command enters a mode in which you can select a menu item from the keyboard. A provisional choice appears in the echo area. You can use the left and right arrow keys to move through the menu to different choices. When you have found the choice you want, type RET to select it. Each menu item also has an assigned letter or digit which designates that item; it is usually the initial of some word in the item's name. This letter or digit is separated from the item name by `='. You can type the item's letter or digit to select the item. Some of the commands in the menu bar have ordinary key bindings as well; if so, the menu lists one equivalent key binding in parentheses after the item itself. Re: Where should top-level info menu (dir) for emacs be?
Depends of the definition of Info-directory-list. On my system (2.2r2 with GNU Emacs 20.7.2) the default value is (/usr/local/lib/info/ /usr/local/info/ /usr/share/info/ /usr/info /usr/share/info/ /usr/info /usr/share/info) (Not sure why all the multiple listings?) and /usr/share/info-/usr/info. Debian policy says: Info documents should be installed in /usr/share/info. Al documentation files are stored in this way... eg README.gz Why do people suggest using things like mc(1)? What if Marcelo hasn't installed midnight commander? Let's instead suggest he learns about the tools on the system instead of learning about crutches such as mc. Marcelo, *.gz files are compressed files created with the gzip(1) tool. When you see people referring to an application like I referred to gzip above, it means that there is a manpage -- aka manual page -- available. You can view the manpage with the man(1) command. Now, go take a look at gzip(1), as gunzip(1) shows you the same manpage. gunzip is a simple wrapper for bash$ gzip -cd file.gz The nice thing about shells and UNIX in general is that you can redirect the input into pager's you're familiar with, such as more(1), less(1), most(1), or even vi(1), my favorite editor. bash$ gzip -cd file.gz | more Notice the pipe ('|'). You can read about redirection of standard input (stdin), standard output (stdout), and standard error (stderr), in the manpage for the shell that you are using. Debian installs with bash(1) as your default shell, so that would be a good place to start. Someone mentioned the use of zless. This is a way of calling less(1), a popular pager, to automatically decompress the file. Essentially, zless does the following: bash$ gzip -cd file.gz | less zless is a keystroke saver, but it only handles *.gz files. With the preprocessor feature of less it can be made to handle *.deb, *.bz2 and other compression types as well. A lesspipe script has been attached that can do these. Thus typing less package.deb will list the contents of the deb package. You will need to define the environmental variable LESSOPEN, i.e., for csh|tcsh setenv LESSOPEN | ~/bin/lesspipe %s Of course lesspipe must be made excutable. Cool, huh? Say you want to email someone the uncompressed version of that file. Given that you've set up sendmail(1), smail(1), or other Mail Transfer Agent (MTA). You can do stuff like this: bash$ gzip -cd file.gz | mailx -s 'Here is the file...' [EMAIL PROTECTED] And thus you see the beauty of the UNIX philosophy: Everything is a filter. The next place for you to look for information is in the document directories: /usr/share/doc/package So go look there for stuff on: gzip, more, less, bash, etc... RE: Why do emacs' info files not show up in info?
One good aspect of emacs always was the very good documentation. However, after installing emacs20 from potato I discovered that info emacs shows the man page and that there is not a way to get the info files to show up when calling emacs' info mode. I have noticed that most of the files in /usr/share/info have -info or .info in there name, but emacs' files and some other packages also don't - and they do not show in when calling info. Is this a bug or am I missing something obvious? Johann. Several info file do have info in there name, i.e., g77.info, g77.info-1, etc. Emacs can also uncompress (ungzip) these files if you want to save some disk space. You may not have the info files in a directory searched by emacs. Check your Info-directory-list variable, i.e, type C-h v (without ) from emacs and the Info-directory-list. I get the following for mine. Info-directory-list's value is (/usr/local/lib/info/ /usr/local/info/ /usr/share/info/ /usr/info /usr/share/info/ /usr/info /usr/share/info) This is the list of directories searched by emacs for info files. Make sure your info file directory is included in this list. -- Carl Greco [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Emacs-20.5a info path
The search of the info-directory-list variable is corrupted when the auto-compression-mode is activated in the latest release of emacs for slink, i.e.: http://http.us.debian.org stable/main emacs20-el 20.5a-1.99 [5729kB] http://http.us.debian.org stable/main emacs20 20.5a-1.99 [8971kB] The info-directory-list is defined as: (/usr/local/lib/info/ /usr/local/info/ /usr/info/ /usr/info/ /usr/info /usr/share/info) but only /usr/share/info is searched once auto-compression-mode is turned on. Is this a bug in the debian distribution of Emacs-20.5a or endemic to the 20.5a version of emacs. If the latter, will the recently released version 20.6 be made available as a deb package in slink? More info on the hpdj driver can be found at ftp://ftp.sbs.de/pub/graphics/ghostscript/pcl3/pcl3.html. Where did you find the magicfilter for hpdj? I am using magicfilter (1.2-28) on slink, but this version of magicfilter does not include a pre-defined filter for hpdj. Not quite, because then what would you call the *real* /usr (since the name /usr is already taken by a symlink ;) However, you can symlink sub-directories, e.g., create /usr2/share /usr2/doc /usr2/local /usr2/src /usr2/games and ln -s /usr2/share /usr/share etc. Just make sure that all the information in these /usr subdirectories are moved to the corresponding /usr2 prior to the symlinks. According to Benedikt Eric Heinen: Actually, if you've already got DOS running on your pc, it should be possible to put in the CD and run a setup.exe without ever making a boot floppy. MS-DOS may not be installed on every system running Linux. I just recently installed an e-mail server with Debian Linux that does not require a DOS partition. Still I'd say it'd be a good idea, if the system could be installed without having to make boot disks... That's what I liked about RedHat3 when it came out, you could just start linux from the dos prompt and the installation didn't even require you to write boot/root/base disks. (Still for quite a few reasons, I am happy I changed to debian - but I really think that this feature would be good, I just don't like all the hassle with those 6 disks you need for the installation, if everything could alternatively also be done from the CD directly. It may be possible to reduce the number of floppy disks required to install Debian if it could be assumed that every system has a CD-ROM. (Mine did not.) However, IMO it is not necessary nor productive to require that MS-DOS be available for Debian installation. I would like to build a Linux system w/o having to pay MS a license fee for DOS. Although, perhaps MS should require Linux as a prerequisite to install NT ;-). -- \/ \ Carl Greco PHONE voice: (402) 496-3381 / \ [EMAIL PROTECTED] / \==/ -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . UUCP lib/distribution mismatch
The uucp_1.06.1-2.deb that was included in the Debian 1.1-14 distribution is not compatible with libc. The executables (uucico, etc) are looking for libc.so.4 while this distribution comes with libc.so.5. Is there an updated compiled uucp packages available? -- \/ \ Carl Greco PHONE voice: (402) 496-3381 / \ [EMAIL PROTECTED] / \==/ -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Mail server for MIME supported MUA's
I am setting up a Debian Linux e-mail server for a small Windows for Workgroups based LAN and need to use a MIME capable agent like pine. Pine uses Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) instead of POP to transfer mail to WfWg clients. IMAP is available as a (non-free) debian packages and pine clients software is available at University of Washington (ftp://ftp.cac.washington.edu/pine/pcpine). 1. I have had some experience with POP (and WfWg based MUA's) but not with IMAP. Are there any special precautions or concerns with IMAP and/or pc-pine? 2. The pine/IMAP combination is the only one that I have found that provides MIME capability in this setting. Am I overlooking others? -- \/ \ Carl Greco PHONE voice: (402) 496-3381 / \ [EMAIL PROTECTED] / \==/ -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] .
