This thread on debian-devel is concerning this problem. http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2013/06/msg00341.html No resolution yet. But it is a big problem because it is training people to fall prey to phishing attacks. Bob I agree with the bug report. When a user initiates an action (like launching Synaptic) having a security prompt request credentials is fine because its intuitive. For system generated actions which just show up at arbitrary times, there should be a clear way of letting the user know which software package is making the request. Otherwise, the security is pointless because the user is simply going to have to guess one way or the other in the end. For those with the same problem, I found a solution: - From the Gnome desktop, go to Activities, Applications, System Tools. - Launch the icon called Software Settings. - Select the Update Settings tab. - Set the Check for updates setting to Never. - Set the Automatically install setting to Nothing. Each of the two settings seem to work independently from the other, so they were both responsible for one security prompt each. Be aware, this will disable some sort of software update checking by Gnome. The Gnome update process may possibly be using the PackageKit and PolicyKit infrastructure, and is also different from update-manager (which doesn't do these security prompts). Very confusing. Personally, I use a shell script which calls apt-get to keep things simple. Anyway, thanks to all who helped point me in the right direction. Authentication required keeps popping up
Hi all. Since upgrading to Debian Stable (Wheezy), the Gnome desktop has a popup which occurs at least once a day asking for authentication. The exact message is: Authentication is required to update packages It always pops up twice in a row whether I type in a password or just cancel the dialog. I've uninstalled the gnome update manager but this still shows up. Does anyone know what might be causing this or how to get rid of it? Re: Authentication required keeps popping up
Thanks for letting me know about the message headers. I wasn't aware they were there. PackageKit is installed on my system. When I try to remove gnome-packagekit-data, though, the dependencies also want to remove gnome, gnome-core and gnome-desktop-environment. Maybe there is a way to disable it instead? ACPID stuck in an endless loop - prevents login
Hi all. After a recent Debian update, I've been unable to log in to my Debian/Linux server using the console and GDM3 won't start - X.org crashes part way through the startup. I think ACPID may be the cause because in syslog there is an endless repetition of the same messages every few seconds. Below is a sample. Login through SSH still works. If I stop the ACPID daemon, the messages go away and the machine settles down. Logins work again but GDM3 is still messed up - it is trying to start over 100 X sessions repeatedly and as each fails, it tries again. Anyone have any idea what is going on here? Thanks. Trouble getting apt-get Default-Release to work
This problem occurs on a Debian install predominantly intended to follow the Stable release. Some packages on the system need to be upgraded to Testing. A file has been added to /etc/apt/apt.conf.d called 88ccc $ cat /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/88ccc // APT::Default-Release stable; // And /etc/apt/sources.list set to: deb http://ftp.ca.debian.org/debian/ stable main contrib non-free #deb http://ftp.ca.debian.org/debian/ testing main contrib non-free deb http://security.debian.org/ stable/updates main contrib non-free #deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib non-free deb http://ftp.ca.debian.org/debian/ squeeze-updates main contrib non-free When the two testing lines in sources.list above are uncommented, a whole bunch of updates from testing show up when running: sudo apt-get upgrade I would have expected those packages to stay at the Stable release. Is this intended? Will some or all packages be upgraded to Testing regardless of the Default-Release setting? Synaptic - debconf: TERM not set
After a recent upgrade (testing distribution), Synaptic started showing this message: debconf: unable to initialize frontend: Dialog debconf: (TERM is not set, so the dialog frontend is not usable.) debconf: falling back to frontend: Readline for every package or upgrade being installed. I do not get this message when running something like dpkg-reconfigure from a terminal window. Synaptic creates its own console window so I don't know how to set the TERM environment variable. Is there some way to set it or is Synaptic broken? This happens on two different systems. Thanks, Chris. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Rebuilt kernel and CD-ROM problem.
Hi all: A laptop installed with slink and the 2.0.36 kernel was upgraded to potato with no problems. The upgraded system continued to use the original 2.0.36 kernel. Everything worked fine. I decided to upgrade to the 2.2.15 kernel, so I installed the source, ran menuconfig and went through the process of compiling and installing the kernel along with the modules. I included support for ide-atapi CD-ROM, ISO9660, and Microsoft Jouliet extensions. The new kernel loads and appears to run fine with the exception that dselect doesn't recognize the Debian Install CD set. I can mount and umount /cdrom and can access the files and directories with no problems, just dselect won't work. I've tried removing the Microsoft Jouliet extensions and the automount module with no effect. If I reboot under the old 2.0.36 kernel, dselect works fine. Same CD-ROM, same drive, same parameters. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks in advance, Chris.
