Credit Card Debian CD image with Telemetry Software(diagnostic stuff)
http://openrock.net has completed a project to produce an installable debian CD image fitting on a Credit Card. Check it out. The 50MB iso can be used to install a Debian System with most of the usual features anywhere. Just keep it in your purse. Can even be used to install servers since it includes apache, perl, postgres etc and lots of useful diagnostic stuff. Get your emergency Debian/CD for your purse at http://openrock.net. How could you ever have lived without it? This is a true(tm) debian CD with .debs on it not only a basesystem.
A philosophical investigation of Linux Communities
This might be slightly off topic but have a look at Ko's writing -- Forwarded message -- Date: Sun, 06 Feb 2000 23:27:14 -0800 From: Ko Kuwabara [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Christoph Lameter [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: my thesis on linux First of all, thank you very much, once again, for all the help you have given me last year. I have finally finished my thesis on Linux, which is at www.cukezone.com/kk49/linux/contents.html The paper discusses the improbable development of the Linux kernel in the hands of part-time volunteer hackers scattered across the Internet. Admittedly, only a few of the ideas presented in the paper are my own. For one, the discussion burrows heavily from papers by Eric Raymond, nor are my conclusions much unlike his. For another, the overall framework is a rather broad, however directly relevant, application of the emerging science of complex adaptive systems pioneered by John Holland, Christopher Langton, and others at the Santa Fe Institute. In all, Raymond's evolutionary view is given an extended and more formal treatment under the terms of sociology as well as chaos and complexity. But aside from my arguments as such, I am hoping that my paper will nonetheless prove to contribute to our understanding of OSS communities. Most of all, my paper presents an ethnographic account of Linux developers, amassed through series of e-mail interviews. While Linux as a social phenomena has been a topic of wide interest and a subject of much discussion by notable names, there seems to be a lack of papers that offer first-hand views and opinions of the general members of the rich and diverse community. At the same time, the paper is intended for an audience in social sciences, and written by a Linux newbie. Errors may be plentiful from the standpoint of a real Linux hacker. While I ask you to tolerate some of my arguments, the paper (as the Linux project itself) benefits directly from your feedback and comments, so please do not hesitate to write me. Re: [pann@ourmanpann.com: Incoming PPP, slink]
On Fri, 4 Feb 2000, Pann McCuaig wrote: The Win95 box sees only itself and the server---it can't reach any other boxes on the ethernet network. The reverse is also true---the server can ping the Win95 box when it's connected but none of the other boxes on the network (either Win95 or Linux) can ping the dialup box. You need to enable IP forwarding. See the netbase script. First thought is a routing problem. Perusing the docs suggests that the server, through the PPP 'proxyarp' option, will pretend to the other machines on the network to be the dialup box. /var/log/ppp.log shows the proxyarp option took, but nonetheless, there is no communication between the ppp0 and eth0 interfaces. Suggestions? TIA Its a routing issue so make sure you enable IP forwarding and check if other systems see the MAC address associated with the IP address of the modem. Make sure that the IP of the modem is valid on the ethernet.

SSMTP use for ISP email.
I think this should make the message go into the archives and thus you will have some publicly available info re ssmtp. Thanks for the flowers ;-) -- Forwarded message -- Date: Mon, 13 Sep 1999 08:43:22 -0500 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: SSMTP Information Dear ssmtp developers, I am a debian user who has been trying to get mutt+smail to work together, so I could send mail through my ISP's smtp box. I only have a dialup connection, so I would usually use pine or netscape mail (along with fetchmail) to send and recieve my email. It was not until I tried to setup mutt that I ran into the need to setup my debian box's email mta. Since mutt is not an smtp aware client, and I didn't want to deliever all outbound mail myself, I had to configure smail to send all outbound mail to my ISP's smtp box. Never having configured an mta before, I spent the next 3 days looking through docs and could not find any working information about a proper smail configuration for sending all outbound mail through my ISP. I did come across a configuration in the debian faq'o'matic but it did not work. I continued to get SMTP 501 errors. I had just about given up until someone on the debian irc server told me about your ssmtp package. And much to my suprise it is exactly what I needed for my current setup/net-connection. I suspect there are many people out there just like me using Debian who would like to use a non-smtp aware email client such as mutt, who would greatly appreciate knowing about ssmtp. Since most people are connect to the internet via a dialup account, and there are more and more debian users everyday who have very little unix experience, I believe if you made your package known to the general public via some faq, or if you placed it in the debian install manual, or if you placed an entry about it in the debian faq'o'matic, it would greatly help out individuals who wish to use MUAs like mutt and not have to rely on non-free software or large clients like emacs for doing their email. Therefore, since most people don't need a full blown email mta, your package meets the needs of many people out there. So please consider placing an entry in the mail-HOWTO, or any other relavent HOWTO, or faq about your package. As for myself, when ever I see someone with a similar problem on the news groups or irc, now I can point them to your package. thank you for coding ssmtp, Don Llopis
Removal of debian usenet gateway
Just ask and the gateway will be gone. I did this because I thought this would be of benefit to the project. If you want to make Debian smaller and make it difficult for people to access information about the project then that is your problem. The gateway was set up after approval by Bruce. On Wed, 10 Dec 1997, Ian Jackson wrote: Bruce or Pete: please make an executive decision that our mailing lists are not to be gatewayed to generally-distributed newsgroups. Re: smartmail/exim question
This phenomenon is due to the strict RFC conformity of exim. smartlist generates a header with Resent-From but no Resent-To. To comply with some RFC exim will insert a Resent-To header (I got that from Phil a while back). This is known to the smartlist people and the examples for Smartlist mention a workaround. Re: How to trick debian into thinking a package is installed
Those tools are in the adpkg package... But that package also has an experimental version of dpkg in it. I will put it back somehow. If you have access to an earlier version of adpkg then get that. On Sat, 10 May 1997, Igor Grobman wrote: There used to exist 2 utilities called deb2asc and asc2deb which were very useful for this kind of thing. They were part of debmake at one time then were moved to adpkg, and after adpkg's removal from distribution seem to have disappeared. Christoph, would you put them back into debmake or anywhere else for that matter? These utilities are truly useful for creating dummy packages. With those utilities available, you would just need to create a text file containing something like this: %control Package: dummy Version: 1.0 Provides: motif, tetex (and some more standard control file lines) Then you run asc2deb, and a .deb package is built. On May 9, Steve Hsieh wrote Hi, Can someone tell me how I can trick debian into thinking that a package is installed? Specifically, I have the real motif installed on my system. However, since this is (obviously) not a debian package, debian has no idea that I have it. And so if I try to install the xmcd package, it refuses to install because lesstif isn't installed, but I can't install lesstif without overwriting the real motif... I guess I could also use the --force-depends option in dpkg to force an install? So my questions are; 1. what's the dirty way to modify the config files so debian thinks lesstif is installed? 2. if I create my own binary .deb package with my motif binaries inside it, how do I change the control file so it provides lesstif? On a side note, motif apps really ought to require a motif package, and lesstiff should provide motif, as opposed to packages directly requiring lesstif. Re: Poppasswd
I do not follow debian-user. Sorry I dont know the full context of the message here. Poppassd uses the passwd program to change passwords. If the password is not accepted then Eudora usually gives an error message. That is at least the behavior when connected to our Internet Servers running poppassd. They are still based on Debian 1.1 though. From what I can tell no change in the passwd program happened between Debian 1.1 and Debian 1.2. On Fri, 27 Dec 1996, Roy C Bixler wrote: rcb On Wed, 25 Dec 1996, Nelson Posse Lago wrote: rcb Hi, rcb This is a very tricky problem. poppassd is a small app that calls passwd rcb to change the password. If the rcb new password is too similar to the old one, or if it is too short, or if rcb it has too many repeated characters, etc. it will issue an error message rcb and prompt you for a new (hopefully better) password. poppassd was not rcb desinged to deal with this. It just waits for passwd to issue the prompt rcb re-enter new password while password is saying too simple: try again. rcb Try entering a very random, 8 chars password to see if it works. To solve rcb your problem, you must try to find a passwd program that doesn't do these rcb checks (at the expense of security) or hack poppassd to be smarter. I rcb don't know if debian has a simpler passwd program. rcb rcb I checked to see if this is the problem by logging into the server rcb directly and changing my password to the same thing I attempted to change rcb it to with Eudora and 'poppasswd'. It would probably be good to split mgetty into mgetty mgetty-fax mgetty-voice mgetty-doc That does not solve the problem with accepting incoming faxes though. How to upgrade a running Slack 3.0 Server to Debian 1.1 (Instructions here)
Updated Instructions!!! Howto Upgrade a Running Slackware 3.0 System to Debian 1.1 -- I have the problem that our main server has to be up almost 24hrs a day but yet I need to switch to Debian since Slackware is becomming badly outdated. Here is how to do it. Note that Debian is not yet running since I am still stuck at step 9 trying to get as much as I can of my old configuration over to the new system before rebooting. 1. Prepare an empty partition and mount it on /new 2. untar buzz-fixed/disks-i386/*14/base1_1.tgz on it 3. Setup /new/etc/fstab /new/etc/localtime, /new/etc/hostname etc. 4. make a directory /new/ftp and mount your NFS Server with the Debian distribution 5. Activate Debian 1.1 in a chroot environment chroot /new bash 6. Mount the proc filesystem lest cron and at will not install: mount /proc 7. Install debian packages Run dselect and dpkg to install aditional packages from the /ftp directory. Its amazing how much you can do with two distributions on one machine this way. You should even be able to compile programs. Be careful what daemons are started in the chroot environment. Kill them off ASAP otherwise they might mess up something in your Slackware setup. 8. Fix some stuff The process of moving the configuration files from the old root to the new root is probably now to be done and the most painful in the process. 9. Reconfigure lilo to boot with the new partition You better have alternate boot possibilities now if something goes wrong. 10. Reboot Fix more things that broke with the change G! Or reboot with the old system.
IRCD / SmartList / xfishtank available at ftp.fuller.edu
We got some more packages debianized. Here is the current list of unique debian packages at ftp.fuller.edu: In this directory you will find new packages that are not yet in the standard debian distribution. mgetty-0.99-1 Adds PPP autodetect to mgetty. ppp-2.2.0fx-1 Adds Remote configuration ability for DNS information for dialin Win95 and WinNT users. apache-1.1.1-1 Upgraded Apache Package verse-0.12 Daily Scripture Verses xfishtank-2.2 Fishtank for X ircd-2.8.21-1 IRC Server smartlist-3.10-1 Mailing List Processor. No Perl much faster than Majordomo. If anyone could help us getting these packages onto ftp.debian.org... Also we have set up an IRC Server for the LUG in Los Angeles at lalug.org. We would be interested in building an IRC network with other LUGs.

How can I submit packages to be included in the distribution?
We needed to produce some .deb packages when our site began utilizing debian. We would like to offer them to the public, but we cannot find a way to submit them anywhere. Could someone please tell us what to do? The documentation on how to submit packages or become an official maintainer are in total disarray right now. Here is a list of packages available from ftp.fuller.edu/Linux/debian today: mgetty-0.99-1.deb Adds PPP autodetect to mgetty. ppp-2.2.0fx-1.i386.deb Adds Remote configuration ability for DNS information for dialin Win95 and WinNT users. apache-1.1.1-1.deb Upgraded Apache Package with proxy Cache support etc. verse-0.12.deb Daily Inspiration through a verse from the King James Bible Planned .deb package from our site (Please tell us if this is anywhere already available!) We are running a full Campus Setup here and we will produce the following packages for our setup: - Harvester Caching Daemon - SmartList ListServer with Full Sendmail integration - procmail with Full Sendmail Integration - fwtk Firewall Toolkit - hylafax Fax Receive and Send with Sendmail Integration - sac System Accounting tools - strobe, tcpspray Probe other systems - ircd IRC Daemon - 3270 Telnet - Hytelnet

It's a few version behind. Never heard of Squid. Speedwise I have seen no other software that could compete with Harvester. - procmail with Full Sendmail Integration Isn't this part of buzz/stable? Yes but its not set up as the local mailer. Sendmail uses deliver under Debian as far as I can see. - hylafax Fax Receive and Send with Sendmail Integration You could also use efax which is part of buzz. Someone is working on qfax (multi-user extensions to efax). I need an integration with Sendmail and the ability to control the time period and where those faxes are sent. The most important stuff for you will probably be the apache source code. I'd really like to see someone maintaining it and keeping it current. I'm hoping to do the following: - merit radius - nocol Network monitoring package - ldap - gated (for internal use - Gated have strict redistribution policies!) I know. Perhaps you can just publish the patches and have debian.rules do an automatic ftp from the gated site? {}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{} {}Snail Mail: FTS Box 466, 135 N.Oakland Ave, Pasadena, CA 91182{} {}FISH Internet System Administrator at Fuller Theological Seminary {} {}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{} PGP Public Key = FB 9B 31 21 04 1E 3A 33 C7 62 2F C0 CD 81 CA B5
