.Xdefaults vs. .Xresources

1997-09-02 Thread Christopher Ray Martin

I am a little confused as to the difference between these two files. It
seems that they are basically the same, or at least they contain the same
type of information.

Which is preferrable to use? Can I use one, and then source it from the
other file (for programs which may use the other one)?

Thanks, Chris

compiling Vim 5.0l, config broken?

1997-08-19 Thread Christopher Ray Martin

I am having a hard time getting Vim 5.0l to compile. It appears the
configure script is somehow broken, but I don't know anything about
autoconf or whatever this is generated from... It lists functions and such
which I know are availible and usable as not availible, and at the
conclusion of the process, an error message appears:

sed: file conftest.s1 line 8: Unterminated `s' command

and no config.mk files appears. Vim 4.6 configured and built fine.

Has anyone gotten any of the 5.0 alphas to compile under debian I'm
up to date with stable.

Thanks, Chris.

Isn't that the point of using shadow passwords? Aren't they much longer?

Read/write VFAT filesystems?

1997-07-28 Thread Christopher Ray Martin

For some reason, vfat filesystems on my box seem to set to read-only for
ordinary users. root can write as well. How can I set it up so the
filesystems are writable for all users (or users in a certain group)?

thanks, Chris.

obsolete package base

1997-07-18 Thread Christopher Ray Martin

I notice I have a package installed called base 1.1.0-14 and it is
considered obsolete by dselect. However, dpkg --remove base doesn't
work, it says it's an essential package.

Do I need to remove this package? How can I do it?

Thanks, Chris.

How to find programs provided by package?

1997-07-18 Thread Christopher Ray Martin

Is there any way to get dpkg to tell you what files were in a package if
you don't have the .deb archive? For example, I installed mctools-lite a
long time ago, but I have no idea what programs were provided, and the
documentation is VERY sparse...

Thanks, Chris.

Netscape 3.01 off-line

1997-07-18 Thread Christopher Ray Martin

I know that I've used Netscape 3.01 off-line before to read documents...
now whenever I try to run it while not connected to my ISP, it simply
hangs. One time it even locked out my other X apps.. I had to kill the
server.

Something must have changed in my setup, but I don't know what to look
for. I'm using the package 'netscape 3.01-4'

On another note, it there a decent WWW browser with graphics for Debian
besides Netscape?

Thanks, Chris

no color in xterms

1997-07-15 Thread Christopher Ray Martin

Before I upgraded to 1.3, I had a package installed called color-xterm.
When I upgraded to 1.3, dselect said that the package color-xterm was
obsolete, so it was purged. Now, I don't have color in my xterms, and I
can't find the color-xterm package.

How can I get color xterms back??

thanks, Chris.

dselect through a firewall?

1997-07-15 Thread Christopher Ray Martin

I'm trying to get my girlfriend's Debian machine updated to 1.3 but so far
its been a real pain because she is behind a corporate firewall and I have
to manually ftp the files. Is there any way to configure deselect to go
through the firewall?

in case this helps, netscape is setup for proxy like:

gate.machine port 80

and you can ftp using

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

and then when it asks for username you type

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

she doesn't have direct access to any outside machine.

anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
chris.

I've noticed that /etc/motd is always replaced by Debian upon bootup. I
was wondering where it gets the contents which replaces it, and how I can
stop it from doing that!!

problems with xquake106-1

1997-05-02 Thread Christopher Ray Martin

I tried the following:

dpkg --install quake-lib-stub_1.3.deb
dpkg --install xquake_1.06-1_i386.deb

and then tried to run xquake. I got the following error messages:

FindFile: can't find gfx/pop.lmp
Playing shareware version.
FindFile: can't find gfx.wad
Error: W_LoadWadFile: couldn't load gfx.wad
Couldn't write config.cfg.

I have the registered version of Quake 1.06 under /mnt/flint/quake (and
the quake.conf points to that location)

Any ideas?

Thanks, Chris.

problem with assert.h

1997-02-23 Thread Christopher Ray Martin

I'm using Debian 1.2, libc 5.4.20-1, gcc 2.7.2.1-4, libg++ 2.7.2.1-6.

Whenever I try a make depend with the Makefile below, it stops with the
following error message:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:7 make depend
makedepend test.cpp basechr.cpp baseitem.cpp dice.cpp bchrtem.cpp
basearm.cpp display.cpp pcchar.cpp invntry.cpp -I/usr/lib/g++-include \
-I/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i486-linux/2.7.2.1/include
basechr.cpp:108:  (!defined (__GNUC__) || __GNUC__  2 || __GNUC_MINOR__
 (defined (__cplusplus) ? 6 : 4))
 ^--- expecting )

It doesn't do this if I comment #include assert.h out.

Is this a known problem with the assert.h header file?

Please Cc: me via email, I have not subscribed to the list yet.

Thanks, Chris.
