.Xdefaults vs. .Xresources
I am a little confused as to the difference between these two files. It seems that they are basically the same, or at least they contain the same type of information. Which is preferrable to use? Can I use one, and then source it from the other file (for programs which may use the other one)? Thanks, Chris Chris R. compiling Vim 5.0l, config broken?
I am having a hard time getting Vim 5.0l to compile. It appears the configure script is somehow broken, but I don't know anything about autoconf or whatever this is generated from... It lists functions and such which I know are availible and usable as not availible, and at the conclusion of the process, an error message appears: sed: file conftest.s1 line 8: Unterminated `s' command and no config.mk files appears. Vim 4.6 configured and built fine. Has anyone gotten any of the 5.0 alphas to compile under debian I'm up to date with stable. Thanks, Chris. Chris R. Read/write VFAT filesystems?
For some reason, vfat filesystems on my box seem to set to read-only for ordinary users. root can write as well. obsolete package base
I notice I have a package installed called base 1.1.0-14 and it is considered obsolete by dselect. However, dpkg --remove base doesn't work, it says it's an essential package. Do I need to remove this package? How can I do it? Thanks, Chris. Chris R. Martin email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Computer Engineeringweb: http://http.tamu.edu/~crm7479/ Texas AM University... How to find programs provided by package?
Is there any way to get dpkg to tell you what files were in a package if you don't have the .deb archive? For example, I installed mctools-lite a long time ago, but I have no idea what programs were provided, and the documentation is VERY sparse... Thanks, Chris. Chris R. Netscape 3.01 off-line
I know that I've used Netscape 3.01 off-line before to read documents... now whenever I try to run it while not connected to my ISP, it simply hangs. One time it even locked out my other X apps.. I had to kill the server. Something must have changed in my setup, but I don't know what to look for. I'm using the package 'netscape 3.01-4' On another note, it there a decent WWW browser with graphics for Debian besides Netscape? Thanks, Chris Chris R. Before I upgraded to 1.3, I had a package installed called color-xterm. When I upgraded to 1.3, dselect said that the package color-xterm was obsolete, so it was purged.
