Hello, I have found the solution to this and want to drop it here in case someone finds this and has the same problem. The solution is described in this <https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-reference/ch05.en.html#_the_modern_network_configuration_without_gui> section of the Debian documentation. Hi Michael, Thank you very much for taking the time to respond to my e-mail. I will give the posts a read and try to adapt them to my issue. Will get back with feedback thereafter. VM using Debian cloud image does not connect to virtual network.
Hello, This is my first message to the community so if I am doing something wrong please assume I am ignorant and not disobedient with respect to the community rules. I am also a novice with respect to this wonderful operating system. That being said, what am I trying to do? I am trying to create an Ansible playbook that sets up a QEMU/KVM libvirt VM running Debian 12 (without the Desktop stuff) so that I may experiment with open source tools. The computer I am trying to do all this stuff from is also running Debian 12( I like new stuff ) but with the Desktop stuff on. I did this successfully initially using a Fedora 38 qcow2 image. With some of the recent news about Red Hat I decided that it is maybe best if the continuous existence and support of my chosen flavor of Linux/GNU is not dependent on a corporation. Finally, what is my problem? I have many problems but what you kind folk might be able to help me with is the lack of network connectivity of this VM machine created using a Debian cloud image. I have not done any of the cloud-init stuff. I am trying to keep the number of mechanisms I need to learn and set-up low. I have tried using the below images: - debian-12-genericcloud-amd64-20230802-1460 - debian-12-generic-amd64-20230802-1460 I have also tried adding interface settings to /etc/network/interfaces to try and make the interface connect and get an ipv4. I tried bringing the interface up (it is down by default) with ip link set dev up. No ipv4 is obtained. After a bit of digging I found that the cloud images also don't have networking.service (not sure exactly what that implies). At this point my 4 neurons are screaming in agony hence I have come seeking assistance. Hope someone has some suggestions about how I may solve this mystery. Kind regards, Cristian Căpșună

If you compiled your own kernel and built in support for IPv6, you might just disable IPv6 for iceweasel. Go to about:config and enable network.dns.disableIPv6. So I decided to `outsource' maildir access to a dedicated compiled-chunk-of-C-code daemon: I have courier serving IMAP to Gnus, and offlineimap syncing the mail server with the *maildir folders*, not the local server. Now Gnus (via nnimap) scans, enters and exits folders blazingly fast (unlike nnmaildir), doesn't fill up my half-gigabyte memory (as nnmbox did), and doesn't interfere with offlineimap; instead, courier does. Well, does not :-) Being a maildir directory, those two coexist nicely. Moving messages between folders can't be faster than it is now (unlike with nnmbox), but there is a shortcoming deleting messages; somehow it takes courier a few seconds (20 or so) to delete any number of messages from a nnimap folder. `top' shows courier being busy during that while, so may be there's some courier config's tweaking in order. Gnus just wait, and if something goes wrong, I can convince it to stop waiting with C-g (unlike before, when it seemed to be doing all the hard work with its "utterly efficient" elisp file handling routines, and listening to noone meanwhile ;-) Well, I hope you save me the kicking. menu: getting some entries in the root menu
I would like to set up my menus in such a way that some entries are in the root of the menu, while the rest of the menus are in a submenu. I'm not the only user on the machine and I want this to be configured this way for all window managers which use menu. So, I thought I'd copy /etc/menu-methods/ to ~/.menu-methods and add a rootsection="/Foo" to ~/.menu-methods/menu.h, just to see if it works. To my surprise, it didn't. Not only that, but while looking at other window managers than my Openbox, I saw that, for example, Fluxbox has all the entries in the root menu, not in the Debian submenu, as it should (The documentation for menu says the default rootsection is "/Debian"). My next problem was getting the entries in the actual root menu. I was thinking section="/" would put it in the actual /, without prepending rootsection (The one I still can't change). I tried section="/../", but that didn't work (I wonder why :-)). So, my question for the seasoned menu users is: since I'm starting to think I'm going about this the wrong way, what _is_ the easiest way of having all menu entries grouped under a submenu, with certain other commands outside? (I have been thinking of putting all the files from /usr/share/menu/ in ~/.menu, after modifying their section to include what I want, but that would be too hard to manage.) -- George Cristian Birzan gcbirzan (at) wolfheart (dot) ro Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former. -- Albert Einstein -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". In one (text) file you begin writing your assessments' resources, and then write a (say) LinkedOpinions node linked to each one of them (as easy to write the capitalized words before, and press enter on it). You can obviously link anything to anything, provided it is on your Wiki or has an associated URL. IMHO, it's a better solution than a DTD or other hierarchic structure, due to the flexibility "wiki style editing" gives you. And if you want to structure it in some way to be able to post-process lists, items and other stuff on you notes, you could use some tags (like [IMPORTANT], [CONCLUSION], etc.) to look for them with grep or other standard tools. You have trouble with XFree, then you post relevant parts of /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and /var/log/XFree86.0.log (you are usually specifically asked for this files). You find a glitch in MSW, and there you go trying to describe the "click-path" that triggers it, the un-copy-pasteable error messages in some dialog boxes, the possibly missing display elements, etc. Some of the questions and answers in MSW-related forums and newsgroups involve a lot of imagination regarding to screen navigation and iconography. What I really meant was to check if ChallengeResponseAuthentication was enabled in the _server_ config, usually /etc/ssh/sshd_config (note the "d"). ~/.ssh/config is read only by your ssh client, on the machine which starts the connection (and overrides /etc/ssh/ssh_config, IIRC). To start a remote session (so your local machine behaves like a graphical terminal), you have to tell xdm(1) where your server is, and a few more things maybe. >ps: is this the best option in order to access my desktop remotely, and >do all the stuff I'm used to? >thanks in advance It seems that you're looking for something to re-attach yourself at a display you left running; this is what I do to take control of my gf's PC (without asking her to write any command, that wouldn't be easy ;-): If your remote desktop is already running (X started with `startx' locally), you can start a vnc server in that display, and access it via a ssh tunnel, very easily: # first, login with X11 forwarding enabled and tunneling the vnc port [EMAIL PROTECTED] ssh -XC -L 5900:remotemachine:5900 remotemachine [EMAIL PROTECTED] password: ** # run x0rfbserver just to configure and setup a password [EMAIL PROTECTED] x0rfbserver # x0rfbserver is now displayed at localmachine's display, set it up, # save and exit # now the trick: get the rights to start an X app in the remote machine's # display (usually :0) [EMAIL PROTECTED] export XAUTHORITY=~/.Xauthority [EMAIL PROTECTED] export DISPLAY=:0 # now start x0rfbserver, which is already configured, and leave that # xterm alone for a while... [EMAIL PROTECTED] x0rfbserver [...gibberish...] # finally, open the vnc session in you LOCAL machine as it were running # just there: [EMAIL PROTECTED] xtighvncviewer 127.0.0.1 Next time, you won't need to set up the password again, so X11 forwarding and x0rfbserver can be skipped. Also, check xtightvncviewer's "encodings" and "bgr233" parameters if your connection is too slow. Over here we also have a suspicious box (a Woody one). But it had been quite hard to see if it really cracked. Normal commands like ps -ax, pstree, netstat -ap, lsmod, top shows nothing but expected. Then we tried chkrootkit (from debian main repository, ver. 0.35-1)... nothing :-( So apt-get --reinstall install the following packages: - net-tools - util-linux - fileutils - findutils - procps - psmisc - textutils, just to be sure the commands are the original ones, and those binaries were not modified by a rootkit. The output was the same. Nessus (also from debian main rep) agains the box dump tons of open ports and security holes! It could be a hidden lkm (the third generation as it is said). But we actually don't know. Someone has directed us to http://s0ftpj.org/en/site.html were you can find kstat. We have not find another tool with that porpouse. We are on that now. So, would be nice if any one else could point out another link to keep going... cheers, Cristian -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? You can find the currently running kernel's config in /boot/, if it's an apt-gettable one, or one you compiled with make-kpkg. You should copy the right config from there to /usr/src/linux/.config . Ensoniq: FIXED.
I made it... Please don't treat me bad... after the first changes I *checked* the level settings in 'aumix' and the volume on the speaker of course. Nothing. Then today I launched first 'xaumix' in which all the levels were set to zero (mute). Then again with 'aumix' I raised the levels again and eureka. Is it possible that some other software overwhelms aumix? Thanks ev'ryone for the prompt suggestions. Bye, C
Ensoniq 137x / SB PCI 128 & woody
Well, thanks everyone for the first round (I also took benefit from posts in debian-italian). Here is what I collected: a) From 'lsof |grep /dev/dsp' it turned out that 'yiff' was using /dev/dsp. I removed it. Now KDE doesn't complain anymore but I still can't play sound neither in Gnome nor in KDE. b) Moreover, I tried playing an mp3 file with 'mpg123' under 'root' and I got 'Illegal Instruction'... Why? c) Many of you suggested to use es1370. Now 'modconf' don't let me remove neither es1371 nor soundcore. The same with 'modprobe -r' (of course). They say '... device busy'. From 'lsmod' it is seen that 'es1371' uses 'soundcore, but "who" uses es1371? Regarding "aumix" and OSS modules what are the critical things to check? Cheers, Cristian
Ensoniq/SB PCI 128 & woody
Hi there, I'm posting this message hoping that someone could help me in taking a step forward with respect to what I found up to now on the Internet. I have installed a Debian Testing (woody) on my PC and I was not able to hear a note from the sound card - a Sound Blaster Audio PCI 128. I cannot open the university's PC case but in several pages I figured out that it is based on the chip Ensoniq 1371. Sad to say that in Win 98 it works fine. However, these are all the infos I found relevant: - kernel 2.2.20 with loades modules 'es1371' (and consequently 'soundcore'). I think these are the relevant entries in 'lsmod': ## es1371 27056 2 soundcore 2452 4 [es1371] # in 'lspci': # 00:0a.0 Multimedia audio controller: Ensoniq ES1371 [AudioPCI-97] (rev 08) # and in 'dmesg': # es1371: version v0.28 time 15:51:55 Nov 4 2001 es1371: found chip, vendor id 0x1274 device id 0x1371 revision 0x08 es1371: found es1371 rev 8 at io 0xa400 irq 10 es1371: features: joystick 0x0 es1371: codec vendor TRA (0x545241) revision 35 (0x23) es1371: codec features none es1371: stereo enhancement: no 3D stereo enhancement # It seems that the device is correctly identified but I'm not able to play systems sounds, audio files or audio CDs. In KDE the session starts with a message complaining that /dev/dsp in busy. These are the states of the devices ('chmod-ed' to 666): crw-rw-rw-1 root audio 14, 3 Nov 4 23:52 /dev/dsp crw-rw-rw-1 root audio 14, 4 Nov 4 23:52 /dev/audio crw-rw-rw-1 root audio 14, 6 Nov 4 23:52 /dev/sndstat I also added 'root' and my account name to the 'audio' group. I have installed OSS drivers (every component I hope...) but not ALSA. Questions: - At first time I didn't realised that I had to include es1371 in the loaded modules. Now, are there other things to set apart from 'modconf'? - It is advisable to pass to kernel 2.4.x ? Thanks in advance for any suggestion. Cristian

Looking from outside, as I do now, it seems that everybody is working to improove debian but no one is working something with debian (except servers, I've heard they are very good on Linux). Usually I work with FoxPro under DOS but I want my DBFs to be secure. Does a FoxPro release for Linux exist? Thak you in advance Cristian Carnutu
