2015-02-28 Thread Csányi Pál
Hi,

I'm compiling a custom kernel for my Debian Wheezy operating system.

In menuconfig when Load an Alternate Configuration File, can't enter
the file name.
The cursor blinking in the field but can't enter any letter.

How can I solve this problem?

R U a Debian Developer?

No, I'm not.

If not, DON'T upgrade to *UNSTABLE* ('sid') distribution. 'sid' is the
*UNSTABLE*, *very buggy*, *INCONSISTENT* distribution for *Debian
developers only* - if U want new packages, use Debian Backports or
*testing* (wheezy).

There are a distribution based on the Debian GNU/Linux unstable branch,
codenamed sid: http://aptosid.com

Aptosid uses packages from Debian SID repository.

For me it's best to me to use Debian SID than Aptosid.

I'd just replace wherever it says 'squeeze' with 'unstable' but it's not

I always keep testing entries in case I want to install an old version

So you are mixing testing and unstable versions?

This hang happen at /var mount point. /var has its own partition

Maybe this hang is nothing else as fsck check the partitions filesystem?

Just a quick fix: disable checking the /var partition by changing
 it's pass value in /etc/fstab to 0.

I better leave it to 2.

Does a CLI-invoked fsck hang when you check the /var partition?

Actually, this hang is not forever; I leave it to see how long
shall to hang and the time was about a minit or two (60-120 seconds).

So, I should to leave fsck to do the job. :)

I dont know why this hang happen so random?

 stuff.

I did so, and now I can use apt-zip to transfer packages from my Desktop
Debian Etch to my laptop Debian Etch system.

But, apt-zip-list and ./fetch-script-wget-debian-asztal download to
/media/usb0/ directory only that packages, which isn't in the repository
of the Desktop system.

Say, I have installed on Desktop Etch mc and less, but fp-compiler,
fp-units-rtl not.

When I do
apt-zip-list -m /media/usb0 -p less,mc,fp-compiler,fp-units-rtl

and

/media/usb0/./fetch-script-wget-debian-asztal

there in the /media/usb0/ directory I find only:

fp-compiler_2.0.0-4_i386.deb
fp-units-rtl_2.0.0-4_i386.deb

but not mc and less debian packages.

What is the solution for this problem?

sure, just cp the .debs from /var/cache/apt/archives and then install

Or install apt-proxy on the desktop system, and point the laptop's

Does the laptop happen to have a serial port? You could connect a null
modem between the laptop and the desktop boxes and run ppp. This not
only allows transfering files, but gives access to the internet via the
desktop (with suitable forwarding setup) so that install can proceed
 normally.

But I have not nullmodem cable.

I think that that it is maybe possyble to use for this pourpose an
USB cable?

Sooner or later I shall by an PCMCIA ethernet card for laptop.

I use an USB drive and this apt HOWTO:

It is OK except that that the X Window is not so stable. It can to be freeze

I try to play with X Window Option in xorg.conf: NvAGP 0 and try out all

xorg.conf:

...

Load freetype
Load glx

I commented the modul vbe because I think that that this cause the problem,
but it isn't.

Maybe the mouse setup: /dev/gpmdata is the reason for this problem?

   resides on the laptop.

This works well (X11 Forwarding even!), but when I've tried Midnight
Commander or Konqueror using the fish protocol, I get errors. In
experimenting, it appears to me that fish only uses password
authentication. How can I make this work with public key only as I'm
   using?

I want to keep my SSH access as secure as possible by using only public
   key authentication.

I use ssh access to the remote debian system with RSA public key.

I can use Midnight Commander to access remote directories with fish; then I
must to enter the remote password for the remote user and the / directory is
open for me.

In MC I open a Shell connection,
give the remote [EMAIL PROTECTED] /#sh:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
enter the password for that remote user, and open the remote / directory.

Using deborphan

2007-08-16 Thread Csányi Pál
Hello!

I purge the orphaned packages on a Debian system:
sudo deborphan | less

and then copy / paste to the aptitude search, and then purge in aptitude.

Is there an automated way to do this task out there?

man deborphan and man aptitude dont shows any suggestion about that.

I try:
sudo deborphan | aptitude purge

but this does nothing.

On this system I purged the X Window system, so there are only the consoles out
there.

Any advice will be appreciated!

D-Link DFE-530TX PCI Fast Ethernet card 10/100MBs - supported?

2007-08-03 Thread Csányi Pál
Hello!

Is the
D-Link DFE-530TX PCI Fast Ethernet card 10/100MBs
supported by Debian GNU/Linux Etch?

If I try to compile linux-image-2.6.18 from source, in menuconfig can't to find
driver for this card.

Is there some experience with this PCI Ethernet card on Debian Etch out there?

Any advices will be apreciated!

Which driver, exactly, are you looking for?

If I could to know.

What does Google say when you search for linux 2.6 DFE-530TX?

Thanks!

I find a Forum on the LinuxQuestions.org [1],
and there find that that for this ethernet card the proper driver is
via-rhine.

I go to by this card now. :)
