My budget is fairly generous. My machines motherboard has and AGP slot so I thought an AGP card would be best. I've had a bit of a look at the ATI web site and it seems that the FireGL Z1-128 [2] might suit me well. I have a matrox G450 that I picked off eBay for $35 and it works quite well and the price was right. It's a older card though, so for gaming I wouldn't really recommend it... although the card works ok, 3D stuff is a tad on the slow side. For normal stuff it works great though, and 2 monitors are very cool.. which I was running under debian unstable with windowmaker. I'm sure there is something better out there, but I've never had a problem with Matrox cards under linux. Hopefully someone can ring in here about some of the newer cards available. I had no complain until I found this annoying problem with hidden albums. I'll have to take a look at gallery then also, since it sounds more functional than igal. Re: gallery not showing all photos
Victor Munoz wrote: Thanks for the replies. I didn't found problems with the permissions. They were all set, for all the albums, as visible for everybody, and modifiable by admin. I did found a workaround, though. It seems the problem is the following: I upload new photos to a temporary album, which is hidden. That way I can work on how to organize the photos in sub-albums, and then I move the new photos and possible new albums to the visible albums. I notice that if I move a sub-album from this hidden album to a visible one, it remains invisible. If I move a sub-album from a visible album, it remains visible. So, annoyingly, sub-albums silently inherit the hidden attribute, and, at least in the woody version, this cannot be unset, as the Edit Album options only show the Hide album, not the Show album. The only solution I've found is to make the temporary album visible, create duplicate versions for the problematic sub-albums, and then move the new versions to the desired locations. This does not make me happy because too many albums are involved, and I didn't notice until today. The problem only seems to appear with albums. Individual pictures move from a hidden to a visible album remain visible, which is why I didn't notice before. That's sort of a rhetorical question; I don't hugely care as I now have a working system [at least I can manually force the necessary drivers to be loaded on boot]. But presumably other people will be bitten by this too... Just for the record: I did a dist-upgrade today and rebooted, and all the appropriate modules are now loading automatically. Whatever the problem was, it seems to have been fixed in the latest unstable. I'd also like to add that doing a dist-upgrade from stable to unstable, (or for that matter going from unstable to unstable 4-1 to 4.4?) of xserver-xfree86_4.3.0.dfsg.1-1 to 1-4 version breaks at least *my* system. I found out that the path to wmaker in you're .xsession is broken after the upgrade. Apparently, /usr/bin/wmaker is correct, but /usr/bin/X11/wmaker used to be correct. Here's what I did step by step to get XFree86 4.0.3 working with Potato 2.2r3. First off, I installed the following lines in my /etc/apt/ sources.list: # Debian GNU/Linux 2.2 - XFree86 Version 4.0.3 deb http://people.debian.org/~cpbotha/ xf403_potato/all/ deb http://people.debian.org/~cpbotha/ xf403_potato/i386/ Next I did a apt-get update and then a apt-get dist-upgrade. Then I typed startx and the file was gone, poof!, and MIA. ;) During the apt-get dist-upgrade I did catch some message about some dependency issue. So..., next I found out that I needed the package called libfreetype6, which is available via http://people.debian.org/~cpbotha. I just downloaded the .deb file via lynx and ran dpkg -i on it. Then after the dependency issues were fixed, I discovered that the xbase-clients package never was installed. (the one fixing my startx missing buglet) So I did a apt-get install on that package and was all set. When you install the xbase-clients package it will prompt ya for creating a new XF86Config-4 file that will be in the /etc/X11 directory. I had to tweak mine slightly but that's about normal. startx missing in potato - 4.0.3 SOLVED
Well, I actually got 4.0.3 going now. Here's a summary of what I did, and what went wrong... and what fixed it. First off, I added the following to my sources.list: # Debian GNU/Linux 2.2 - XFree86 Version 4.0.3 - added 05/24/01 at 20:35 deb http://people.debian.org/~cpbotha/ xf403_potato/all/ deb http://people.debian.org/~cpbotha/ xf403_potato/i386/ I then preceeded to do an apt-get update followed by a dist-upgrade. This replaced / updated the system to XFree86 4.0.3, but I found out that the xbase-clients package didn't come over due to a dependency issue, which was libfreetype6. I fired up lynx and grabbed the deb file, installed via dpkg and this allowed me to finally get the xbase-clients package, thus restoring startx in /usr/X11R6/bin. I have the output of apt-get and the errors. If anyone is interested I'll post it in a follow-up message. Thanks goes out to Paul T. Wright, who pointed me in the right direction. And others also! Then after going through the config of apsfilter, it prints a test page, (which always works) and then saved it. Then I ran the checkpc program, and everything now works. I can print with Star Office, XV, etc. The only thing that doesn't print yet is gimp... which I'll figure out. Hopefully this might help. Regards, Dana

Printer Setup under Potato
Greetings everyone! After just moving to Debian a few weeks ago, (coming from SuSE) I finally got my Cannon BJ-6000 working, and thought that I'd pass on what I found so others might not have to go through my experimental stage. :-) Anyways, it seems like to get printing to work, it's how to install and use the packages in the following order. 1. lprng, 2. gs (ghostscript) 3. a2ps and finally 4. apsfilter. Upon installing apsfilter, it runs a setup script and *will* look to see if you have gs and a2ps installed, thus giving you the option of more print drivers. If you happen to be coming from a Windows or DOS background, as in LPT1, LPT2..., linux numbers things starting at 0. (zero) So LPT1 = lp0, LPT2 = lp1, etc. I also always customize my kernel, and am currently running 2.4.1 and the modutils 2.4.1. (compiled off of the original sources from kernel.org) I'd also like to mention that apt-get and dselect are very cool, especially when I created the root and rescue disks, booted up and installed via dhcp over the net. :-) (cable modem) Dana
