Exploring the recent QT open source issue.
Before I go on, first allow me to make this note. If you have any biased, like to flame, argue or debate without merit or fact to hold your position, please do NOT read any further. I would like to ask a serious question about KDE vs. Gnome without futile debates and idiotic tangents based on one's biased opinion of one or the other. My question relates to Debian's position on KDE at this point. Now that QT has a license that can be considered open source, how are the Debian maintainers going to follow up on this? On /. today there was mention of some people deciding to leave Gnome to return to the development circle of KDE, being that they don't wish to re-invent the wheel. I doubt that this will cause great instability in the development effort of Gnome in the long run, but it brings up some interesting issues. Will Debian now package KDE applications in DEB files now that QT is open? Is Debian, like RedHat, going to still consider Gnome to be the official kit for their distribution? Are considerations being made to allow for both? I am not going to pass judgement on anyone's opinion, but rather welcome the opportunity to see where the Debian community really wants to go in. Our company purposely stepped back from doing any more X based development and holds to using Java and its JFC(Swing) toolkits until the stability of the source tree's become accepted. Since all our development machines are running on Debian, and we like the easy maintainance of the packaging, we wonder if we will have the choice through packaging when it comes, or if Gnome will still be the only packaged kit distributed by the Debian group. -- Dana M. Re: Dselect using CD.
You must set up which device its on. You can find this out by looking in dmesg. They are looking for something like /dev/hdb, /dev/hdc etc, based on where your cdrom is located on the machine. TCP Wrappers
Can anyone tell me how to get around the following problem: I have tcp wrappers set up in inetd.conf. When I try to telnet to the server, it takes quite a long time before I get the prompt. In hosts.allow I have set up ... ALL: 192. ... which should be allowing all internal hosts onto the machine without having to do reverse resolution. However, it still is. If I add my ip to the /etc/hosts file, then I get the login prompt IMMEDIATELY on connect. What can I do to have the wrappers NOT do a reverse lookup. I am thinking perhaps the tcpd maintainer may have compiled PARANOID into the package, but I can not confirm that this may be the case. I definitely do not wish to add each workstation in the /etc/hosts file, since having several hundred entries is pretty ugly. Any help would be really appreciated. -- Dana M. PAP With Diald
Can anyone give me any help with setting up PAP with diald? My ISDN line currently locks with the DTE flashing, and the logs show I am not authenticating properly. I added --name eppdm to my /etc/init.d/diald, as some people suggest that in some help docs and avenues. However, it doesn't seem to work for me. Epson Stylus 400
Can anyone tell me if the Epson 400 Color Stylus can work under Linux. I can force it to do normal text, but I can not get it to do anything when in X, such as printing in Netscape or StarOffice. Re: bootable Debian 1.3.1 CD
Well, I am sure you can build your own.. but why bother. Go spend 9 bucks, and buy the CD SuperPack at Linux System Labs. I am not affilated with them in any way, other than being a satisfied customer. If you purchase the cd pack, you get 7 cds. 1) SlackWare 3.4 2) Red Hat (vr 5 I believe) 3) Debian BINARY 1.3.1 cd 4) Debian SRC 1.3.1 cd 5-7) 3 pack of the Sunsite archieves. Their web site also said somehting about packaging Caldra OpenLinux Lite for a while.. so if yer quick.. you would probably get that as well. Or you can buy just the Debian distro... which is a two cd set, one bin one src. Every time I gotta install on a new machine, I just put in the Debian BIN cd... select boot CDROM, C .. and boom... automatically install when I save the cmos settings. You can get the CD Super Pack for $9 bucks at: http://www.lsl.com/catalog/packages.html You can get the Debian 2 CD set for $4 bucks at: http://www.lsl.com/catalog/software/debian-1.3/. Saves LOADS of time and hastle when having to rawrite the disks, switch all the disks in and out, and go running for packages with dselect. Re: installing xlib6g (libc6)
I've had that problem quite a bit, where things require lib6g, or standard lib6.. and I've had the other installed. (Depends which system I'm on). Anyways... I have found you can force the install... and in every case to date.. its worked fine. Try this... dpkg --force-depends -i package.deb So far.. I have been able to install all packages that require the reciprical of what I have .. and I have yet to come across a problem. Some die-hards will say this insn't all to clean, but as I have stated.. it works fine on about 4 different machines I've done it on. Paolo M. Cleaning dselect
Does anyone know a way to clean dselect to only show info on the installed packages? I botched some of it, and now its nuts trying to figure what is to be installed.. what is considered on purge.. and what is removed. I have entries for packages that haven't installed correctly (ie xv.. due to a conflict ) that isn't on the system to work with anyways... I'd like it removed. -- Dana M. Re: simple questions
Hi Clay. 1) Yes, Debian can co-exist with Win95. Using something called LILO( Linux Loader ), it can become your boot manager, which will allow you boot multiple OS's. 2) You can get plenty of packages for Debian for compiling other languages. Java, C, C++, Perl and shell scripting are just a few of the many exciting languages you can code under. And god forbid.. shucky darns.. no VB. ;-) Best thing you could do is buy a book on Linux and dive in. Running Linux by O'rieley and Associates seems to be a good start for many people, as it starts with the customization and installation of Linux right down to its use. Personally. I would suggest breaking down and going to www.lsl.com and buying the CD SuperPak, which contains 7 cds FULL of linux stuff. My fav.. is the Debain 1.31 Source CD, and Binary CD.. which made my first installs nice. It also includes RedHat, Slackware and a sunsite archive 3 cd set. And hey.. its like 10 bucks. Good luck. Clayton Berry wrote: Howdy. I'm new to linux/gnu and have a couple questions I haven't been able to find answers to. 1) Can Debian co-exist with my windows95 environment? 2) Does Debian come with compilers for languages other than Xwindows. Issues with libc6-deV install over libc5 stuff.
I am currently trying to install a few packages under Debian, and I keep faiing on my dpkg. I am trying to install libc6-deV, but it conflicts with libc5-dev. However, if I try to remove libc5 stuff I have problems trying to do so. Is there a way to override the conflict, and install libc6 stuff over libc5? -- Dana M. Still with the libc6-dev issue.
I would like to thank everyone for pointing me to the mini-howto. I still seem to have this resource conflict, and I was wondering if someone could tell me what step I missed? In order, here is what I did: 1)installed ldso_1.9.5-2 2)installed libc6_2.0.5c.0.1 3)installed ncurses3.0_1.9.9e-2 and ncurses3.4_1.9.9g-5 4)installed libreadline2_2.1-7 and libreadlineg2_2.1-7 5)installed bash_2.0.1-5 6)installed libg++272_2.7.2.8-0.1 7)installed dpkg_1.4.0.19, dpkg-d_1.4.0.19 and dpkg-ftp 8)attempted to install libc6-dev_2.0.5c-0.1 and failed. I then went on and did the following: 9)DOWNGRADED to libc5_5.4.33-3 10)DOWNGRADED to libc5-dev_5.4.33-3 11)reinstalled libc6_2.0.5c.0.1 12)attempted to install libc6-dev* At this point it still is in conflict. I don't really HAVE any *-dev packaged to purge that are an issue here(That I know of). What critical step did I miss... or what tangent did I take which wasn't condusent to the requirements of the install? Many thanks for the responses -- Dana M.
