RE: logo-contest
On 04-Feb-99 E.L. Meijer \(Eric\) wrote: Hi all, I suppose everyone knows there is a gimp/logo contest for debian (http://contest.gimp.org/rules/). I find this a bit strange. On the one hand, the logo must be easily scalable, on the other hand, the gimp contest demands that it is totally developped in gimp. These are conflicting demands. I would say there should be a good scalable, good-looking in black and white, logo in a vector format first, which can then of course be manipulated in the gimp and raised to great artistic heights :) In other words, the fact that the logo-contest is a gimp-contest at the same time, limits the logo designers in a way that is by no means advantageous to debian. I would suggest that logo designers are at least _allowed_ to use any other tool they choose as well. I think that's a side-effect to using a Gimp Contest to generate a seelectionon to chose from... the rules are pretty much in the hands of Gimp and we get to judge the output... -- Please cc all mailing list replies to me, also. = * http://benham.net/index.html * * * -BEGIN GEEK CODE BLOCK- ---* *Darren Benham * Version: 3.1 * * [EMAIL PROTECTED] * GCS d+(-) s:+ a29 C++$ UL++ P+++$ L++* * KC7YAQ * E? Re: Web server is really good, but can't email webmaster
Your message made it to the webmasters (well, most of them). I remember reading it. My guess, one person in the list had problems with his email and *that* message bounced. Anyway, the compliments were very much appreciated. It's nice to know that ones work is being noticed and is actually helping. Some of your suggestions were added to the todo list for looking at, but since your questions are pretty much in Jay's territory, I left it to him to answer them :) - Darren Alex Perry wrote: I originally tried to send this message to the Webmaster. Perhaps someone could deliver the error report to the maintainers of the redirector list on master.debian.org and/or forward my _minor_ comments to the webmaster? Alex. I may not have mentioned this before, but the whole web server is well organised and is among the most responsive I've found on the internet. (1) Are you maintaining the 'nocache' tags correctly, so that I can have my machine locally cache the site and reduce loading on static pages in the usual way ? (2) What really slows the whole site is when I hit the 'search' feature. I almost dread using it, partly because it tends not to find what I'm looking for. (3) I've just found the package search facility ... I had been doing it manually with less and/or dselect. THIS IS GREAT. But you knew that. (4) Is there some way to browse the man pages on the site? If there is, I haven't found it. It would be useful to read the man pages in a package before I install it... (5) Wouldn't it be nice if the autmatic page you generate for a package has a link that fetches the tar -tvf listing? If it groups the files into sections, according to whether the first eight characters of the filename are identical, it would be easy to use the jump-to-section feature at the top. To be really sneaky, make the file names themselves be scripts that retrieve the specific file from the package. That would indirectly resolve my manpage request above too. -- Unsubscribe? mail -s unsubscribe [EMAIL PROTECTED] /dev/null

I like the XForms look and feel. As it stands, most of my programs will recompile under fltk. I just have a few that won't and one of the reasons is the plotting... You can look at GTK see if it can help. I have a lib here called EZWGL GTK, from what I remember, doesn't have and easy graphing mechanisim. for news purveyor, it uses the toolkit. Or as I mentioned, you can add to fltk. The author is very keen on people helping to make it a better lib. Several pieces were recently added by a few mailing list readers. I know.. the author suggested that when I asked him about the xyplot.. unfortunatly, I know *NOTHING* about X programming. I can get programs out by using the tool kits where I only have to understand C or C++ and not X. -- http://benham.net/index.html -BEGIN GEEK CODE BLOCK- Version: 3.1 GCS d+(-) s:+ a29 C++$ UL++ P+++$ L++ E? If you use X (xdm) and one of the flavors of fvwm*, you can use FvwmButtons to give them a button bar on the screen when X starts up. -- http://benham.net/index.html -BEGIN GEEK CODE BLOCK- Version: 3.1 GCS d+(-) s:+ a29 C++$ UL++ P+++$ L++ E? RE: Reinstalling required packages with dselect
Unless you don't like less for some reason, I'd just copy /usr/bin/less ontop of /bin/more and use less, instead. On 24-May-98 Jim Rogers wrote: I accidentally overwrote /bin/more (using instead of |), and dselect won't let me reinstall the package that contains it (util-linux) because it is already installed. I can't uninstall it because it is a required package. How did I get back MORE? RE: the boot disk's kernel

What has been done in the kernel to support fat32? The 2.0.34 kernel will have FAT32 support (all the prePatches do) officially. Debian's kernel has had a patch applied, I believe, to provide the support. -- http://benham.net/index.html -BEGIN GEEK CODE BLOCK- Version: 3.1 GCS d+(-) s:+ a29 C++$ UL++ P+++$ L++ E?
