a few problems...
I am installing debian for the first time, and have already installed the base system as well as selected some packages (yet to be installed). I accidentally pushed the reboot button on my computer, and got error messages, although it would still let me in. As I didn't know how to fix it at first, I kept just using it unfixed a few times, having to remount the drive read/write each time, then running dselect to select a few packages. I would then quit dselect, and type: shutdown now and the computer would reboot. I finally learned how to fix it (fsck /dev/hda2 while in /), and rebooted my computer, but now all commands are useless. When I type mount -n -o remount,rw / (in /) it says that the command can only be used in the root directory. I also tried it in /root, /home, but kept getting the same message. I also tried typing shutdown now (in /)and it did not recognize the command. Please help! Also, I was wondering how I can configure it so that I don't have to remount the drive every time.
dselect
I am currently installing slink on my PC, and I am now ready to start installing packages (from cdrom). Problem: after I login and type 'deselect', I get the message: deselect: unable to open/create access method lockfile: permission denied I have no idea what lockfile is, why I'm denied permission to use it, and how I can get around this.
roadrunner cable
this may be a longshot, but is there anyone living in san diego and getting roadrunner cable? i e-mailed them to get some network information (broadcast address to use on my network, what system I should use as a DNS server, etc.) and they e-mailed me back saying that linux doesn't support roadrunner. i was wondering if anyone else had encountered this problem, and knows how to deal with it.
first time install
I am about to install linux for the first time, and am having a few problems: what are the symbolic links for? what do they do? They are not being downloaded to my computer when I download the packages. Do I need them? Also, the file sizes specified for the packages are relatively small - 3 Kb, 4 Kb, etc., but when I download the packages they turn out to be larger - 3 Mb, 4 Mb, and devel was about 150 Mb. Why is this? Any help would be appreciated.
partition magic
installing linux for the first time - was wondering if anyone has had any experience w/ partition magic. i used it to partition 6 Mb for my current C: (windows98) and 4Mb of free space intended for debian. do i need the free space partition to be labeled linux ext2? what about creating a swap partition - anything special i need to do to create one?
