Q: SVGA X Server Fails w/16bpp
I just installed debian on my home PC. I mirrored almost everything from debian on my Laptop. I couldn't mirror the X Server Config because of diff graphic cards. The SVGA X Server works for 8bpp, but fails for 16bpp. My cirrus logic card will support 16bpp colors. Here's the scoop. The PC is a Compaq 486/50 with 32MB RAM, Cirrus Logic GD-CL5428 w/1MB DRAM. I used XF86Config and selected all the standard inputs. I think the card uses a intergrated RAMDAK, so I selected a normal RAMDAK. I selected the following options: linear, fast_dram and no_bitblt. I tried setting the MemBase as recommended in the cirrus docs, but it caused my PC to lockup and I couldn't reboot it. I had to turn it off and it hosed the file system. I have to run fsck everytime and I've gotten scared to continue trying to get it to work. Any help would be great. -- Dean C. Q: Web Based Admin
Is there currently any Web Based Admin for Debian Linux? If not, I would like to know what everyone in the group would think about a project to bring Web Based Admin to Debian Linux? I plan to work on this as I get time, but if anyone else is interested, I would be happy to share my results or help from those who think it would be worth while. I would like to start off with a few simple commands at first, maybe just user/group account management. Let me know what you think...maybe I'm getting in way over my head and just don't know it. Q: List Archive
Is there an archive of the questions asked on this list anyplace? I've been trying to save all the digest mail, yet it is getting BIG fast. I hate to re-ask a question someone may of asked a few weeks before. Any ideas? [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . RE: Q: gcc cpp
I have written a basic C program just to try out gcc, the source code is... When I executed the application, it ran yet I did not get the This is a test You probably got the wrong test program. There's one built into bash and there's also an (equivalent) one in in /usr/bin/test. You need to type ./test Thanks and sorry to everyone at the same time. I now remember seeing something about the Test program. Duuuh... I'm trying to read more before I email the group, just that some of this stuff is in multiple docs and I'm having a rough time digesting it all and this is my production Laptop for work and I have very little time to get it up and running. -- Dean C. Q: gcc cpp
In the first place, thank you everyone for all the help. Sorry if I ask so many questions. I have written a basic C program just to try out gcc, the source code is: #include stdio.h main() { printf(This is a test\n); } When I compiled it I ran: gcc test.c -o test When I executed the application, it ran yet I did not get the This is a test message to show up on my screen. I have read the doc's on gcc. Am I missing something? I even tried using cpp and I get the same results. Q: How to add to X Mngr popup menu
The subject line says it all. I am using Afterstep as my WinMngr. I would like to add menu items both to the menu that pops up when you left mouse click on the background and to the Afterstep menu. There must be a doc for this someplace, yet there are so many I am probably stumbling over it and missing it. Q: Installing more Debian packages
I am having several problems with my Debian installation, but I thought I would ask the questions one at a time. My first questions has to do with the Debian Packages. I have a new installation of Debian 1.3.0 on a Compaq 486/33 Server with a 1.2GB SCSI HD and 32MB RAM. I have installed the base system with VERY few extras (Emacs and such). I now have it up and running as a Intranet FTP Server, but now I would like to add some additional packages. How do I go about adding them, do I use DSelect? Or do I use dpkg? If I use dpkg, how do I prevent conflicts? I've looked over the install docs and saw nothing on this. Thank you. -- Dean Sullinger [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Trouble? e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] .
Q: X-Windows Fails
OK, next question. While I installed Debian 1.3.0 on my Compaq Server, DSelect took me through the configuration of X-Windows. The server has a SVGA card installed. I selected a standard SVGA card and a standard SVGA monitor. The configuration program engaged just fine. I selected my mouse and made the needed settings and it worked fine. Once dselect was done, I tried to execute X and all I got was a gray screen with my mouse pointer. The mouse works fine, but that's all, it just sits there and stares at me. I have to press Ctrl+Alt+Bksp to exit out and then the text screen is so hosed that I can't read anything. Any help would be great. -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Trouble? e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] .
Installation w/SCSI Drive via Floppy
I am installing Debian Linux 1.3.1 onto a Compaq SystemPro LT. It does not have any IDE HD. It has a Compaq 32-bit Fast Wide SCSI-2/E Controller with a 1GB SCSI HD. When I use the Rescue disk, it does not recognize the controller or the HD. Where can I find drivers or how can I get this to see the drive? Please excuse my ignorance if the above is a simple question, this is my first time at installing Debian. -- Dean Sullinger Arizona Dept. of Trans.
