Where is parport.o ?

2003-04-02 Thread Dieter Schoppitsch
Hi all!

I try to setup a 2.0.34-Kernel on an older laptop.

Unfortunately I'm not able to insmod parport (no module found).
It seems that I have to compile a new kernel and new modules - but I
didn't find the option Parallel Port Support (General Setup) in
the kernel configuration (like it is with newer kernels 2.2).

What did I miss? What do I have to do to get parport.o?

Thanks for any help.
Dieter

SVGALIB Config

2003-03-28 Thread Dieter Schoppitsch
Hi all,

I'm trying to setup svgalib (/etc/vga/libvga.config) on my old laptop.

Unfortunately viewing a picture with zgv shows a horzontally splitted
screen where the upper/lower part is shifted left/right.

My current settings are:
HorizSync 31.5 31.5
VertRefresh 60 60
chipset CT 0 512

Browsing the web, reading faq's/manuals and trying nearly all possible
variatons of parameters in libvga.config didn't help.

Any suggestions where and how to 'screw'?

TIA Dieter

Spreadsheet Recommendation

2003-03-04 Thread Dieter Schoppitsch
Hi all,

I'm looking for a spreadsheet which is small, fast, wysiwyg and similar
to M$-Excel.

SC ist fast and stable, but not compatible to anything.
GNUMERIC, KSPREAD and OpenOffice are too big.

Is there anything out there (like abiexcel) that covers my demand
(or am I dreaming of 'hot ice cream')?

TIA
Dieter

IrDA - ppp-Connection via Mobile Phone

2003-02-27 Thread Dieter Schoppitsch
Hi all,

I would like to etablish a ppp-connection via IrDA-port and
my mobile phone to my ISP.
But what works via serial cable - lacks on my knowledge about IrDA.

dmesg shows the entry: IrDA (tm) Protocols for Linux-2.2

I need a IrDA-device for an entry in pppconfig.
But I don't have a device entry which shows something like ircom.

What's missing? What do I have to do?

TIA
Dieter

Sound in Kernel-Config

2003-02-20 Thread Dieter Schoppitsch
Hi all,

I try to compile a Kernel which supports my soundcard.
I have a Yamaha OPL3 SA3 sound system (which I was told is a pcm).

In my Kernel-.configure I have the following options:

# Sound
#
CONFIG_SOUND=y
# CONFIG_SOUND_CS4281 is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_FUSION is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_ES1370 is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_ES1371 is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_MAESTRO is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_ESSSOLO1 is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_ICH is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_SONICVIBES is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_TRIDENT is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_MSNDCLAS is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_MSNDPIN is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_VIA82CXXX is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_OSS is not set

dmesg doesn't show anything pcm/sound-like.

Which choices I have to make to support my Yamaha pcm?

TIA
Dieter

Hi all,

I wonder where to find Debian 2.2 and 2.4.
On archive.debian.org I only found Debian up to 2.1.

TIA Dieter

Install Minix from Linux (no Floppy)

2003-02-17 Thread Dieter Schoppitsch
Hi all,

sorry, if this mail is (too) off topic.

I'd like to install Minix on a free partition on my Toshiba Libretto.

Unfortunately the (PCMCIA-)floppy stops when I try to install (regular)
from disks.

Is there a way to install Minix from Linux (or DOS) without floppy?
- and how?

Thanks for any help.

mutt/exim [solved] - how to rewrite sender-name

2002-12-16 Thread Dieter Schoppitsch
Yeah - solved it.
Thanks for your help and patience with me.

I solved it with:
* Put localuser in /etc/group mail-group
* Put mail-group in /etc/exim.conf trusted-groups
* Rewrite (all) local users in /etc/exim.conf with username_my_ISP_expects

Thanks again - with a running email my box seems to be completely configured

Forget trusted user, it sort of doesn't work. That means it does what
the specs say it does, but that isn't what you expect.

So it seems I have to use my /etc/exim.conf to rewrite my Sendername
(localuser@myhostname) to avoid a rejection from my ISP (550 Sender verify failed).
But that didn't work (I did smthg wrong) - I tried in my /etc/exim.conf rewrite
section:
  *@localuser@myhostname usernamemyISPexpects Ffrs

 Not *@localuser@myhostname, just *@myhostname

2002-12-16 Thread Dieter Schoppitsch
You're right - my loved oldtimer is a small 486-laptop, which
works fine except I didn't find the bios-battery to replace it.

Do you have a software-hint to switch to GMT automatically when connected
with my ISP?

TIA

Except for the date above; your box is nearly 15 years in the past. :)

2002-12-16 Thread Dieter Schoppitsch
Actually I didn't find any battery (except my accupack) when I took
apart my laptop.

* Where does such a pile sit in a laptop (usually)?
* Could it be some kind of capacitor?

You don't have to replace it with the exact same one. As long as you
get the voltage and the polarity right, you can use any
non-rechargeable lithium battery that will fit in the space. Voltage
and polarity are usually pretty clearly marked, except on coin cells
(which are all 3V and the button bit is negative, case positive).
