[Debian/Bullseye] - Come far scattare il 'fallback relayhost'?

2023-11-20 Thread Ennio-Sr

smtps.tin.it nasr.la...@tin.it:password_in_chiaro
smtp_fallback_relay smtp.autistici.org al.mu...@autistici.org:password_in
chiaro

lle quali seguivano altre, che peròerano commentate con '#'.

Ebbene, perché quado i messaggi alla lista venivano respinti da tin.it,
come mai non veniva usata la seconda riga contenente il 'fallback_relay'?

Grazie dell''attenzione, ennio

Hi Francisco and thank you for the hint; however, as I use the
xserver-xorg-video-nouveau driver I doubt your suggestion will work in
my case. Anyway I'll bear in mind it for next time linux-image is

Hi Francisco,
yesterday I had a similar problem: during an 'apt-get upgrade' a new
*linux-image-4.15.0-0.bpo.2-amd64_4.15.11-1~bpo9+1_amd64.deb*
was installed. After a reboot I wasn't able to get X and could not
detect why that was happening as xorg.log showed no errors!
Going back to the previous:
Linux mcmini-4_1-deb 4.14.0-0.bpo.3-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.14.13-1~bpo9+1 \
   (2018-01-14) x86_64 GNU/Linux
solved the empasse.

Hope this helps.

I can't tell because in the meantime I went back to the 'nouveau'
driver: up to now it hasn't yet frozen (cross fingers ;-)
However, Xorg.?.log showed the module was detected and loaded and this
fact is asserted by the following lines extracted from a 'journalctl -xb
--boot=-x' (where 'x' was the number of boot when nvidia was installed)

Here it is (I saved it before removng nvidia):

# 01_enable_vga.conf
# per modificare i valori del bridge e del display della nvidia
# cfr. proprietary-nvidia-drivers-on-mac-with-efi (ask ubuntu)
  setpci -s "00:17.0" 3e.b=8
  setpci -s "05:00.0" 04.b=7

>
Note that when I checked, as suggested by the ubuntu link author, with
  $ sudo setpci -s "00:17.0" 3e.b
08
  $ sudo setpci -s "05:00.0" 04.b
07
I obtained the correct values.

Some further considrations:
While I'm writing this answer I'm recalling to my mind that I was acting
in complete ignorance of what all that mean, particularly the 3e.b=8
etc. In the meantime I have desperately searched the web for an
explanation of hex structure, which I found a few hours ago. And the
only doubt, now, is that I might have first given that setpci
instruction with the same values of ubuntu post (05.b=7) and after
getting the black screen having corrected to 04.b=7.
I am still not sure which value would have been correct and if you know
please tell me just for the case I might go back again to nvidia in case
of new frequent frozes of nouveau.

Many thanks for your help. Regards, Ennio

[Debian-Stretch on macmini-4.1] Can't get X working with nvidia

2018-03-09 Thread Ennio-Sr
Hi all!

since I installed new kernels (i.e. 4.9.0 and 4.14.0-0) to be
half-protected against Meltdown/Spectre I was having freezing problems
with X using 'nouveau' driver (never had any problem with older
kernels). So i decided to try the original non-free nvidia driver as
provided by the nvidia-legacy-340xx-driver and relted packages. Now,
after struggling for a couple of days to search the web for a possible
solution to the 'black screen' coming out running startx, I'm curious to
know if there is any of you with the same hardware who found a
workaround and would share it.

Looking at the various logs I can't find any clue.
Reading I also
consulted the suggested link 'http://askubuntu.com/a/613573/134848' but
as its author worked on a MacBook7,1 whereas mine is macmini4,1 I'm
afraid either I misunderstood his advices concerning the 'setpci -s' (my
values where different) or that patch is not applicable to macmini.

Thanks for your attention, regards, ennio

[debian/stretch] problems playing zipped midi file on console

2017-03-13 Thread Ennio-Sr
[Duplicates a post to _debian/italian@..._]

Hi all!

I hope somebody can help me solve this dilemma:

I have two PCs with the same debian version and (to the best of my
knowledge) the same configuration, at least AFA _/etc/mime.types_ and
_/home/user/.mailcap_ is concerned.

However, when I try to play a zipped midi file (from within _lynx_) the
two PCs behave differently: one plays it using timidity, whereas the
other asks to Download or Cancel the file.

BTW, _/etc/lynx/lynx.cfg_ and _/home/user/.lynxrc_ are also the same.
Can you suggest what else should I check?

Thanks for your attention, regards Ennio

No, the dependency is on 'libbluetooth3' for Stretch version of
network-manager (1.6.0-1). No dependencies are shown for previous
versions.

Mmh, I started to feel lost when the 'route -n' showed no connection and
'ifup eth0' said 'unknown device' or something like that.
Then I found older version 1.4.4-1, which is probably Jesiie's.

No, I modified the default behaviour creating the file '01Keep-debs' in

Hi!
As you certainly know (and I learnt recently), in the oncoming
Debian/Stretch version, the network-manager pkg depends on libbluetooth3
so that when this package is removed network-manager will be removed as
well.
Now, considering that - if I understand well - the Stretch default
policy will be to delete all downloaded packages once they have beeen
installed (unless you modify default), a newby could have problems to reconnect.

AAMOF it happened to me a few days ago when, while struggling to pair an
apple wireless keyboard, I removed all bluetooth related packages and
remained 'isolated' from the world. Luckily enough I had a
network-manager package in the /var/cache/apt/archives and could solve
my problem.

Of course, the deletion of network-manager is announced when you remove
libbluetooth3 but I think it should be stressed by a stronger axplicit warning,
also considering that while removing bluetooth one would not expect that
network-manager will vanish altogether and could not notice the weak
'Remv network-manager ...' amon others.

Thank you for the nice result of your work.
Best regards,
   Ennio

No, I can assure all commands were in order, including 'agent'.
In the meantime a look given to 'lsmod' in the older mcmini (the one
with squeeze ppc that paired with the kb) showed that there the
bluetooth mod was used, among others, by 'l2cap' and 'sco', which are
missing both in Jessie and Stretch kernel's modules.
OTAH I have no idea what those modules helped doing...

BTW, I red the suggested url, and so many others up to now and have no hope
left ;-(

What I ment was to receive (after booting) a login prompt in tty1 console;
then, if and when I need it switch to a new tty and call 'startx'
Michael's reply was perfect: it did exactly what I wanted ;-)

I'll keep in mind your suggestions: for the time being I'm not sure I
understand them well.

Many thanks to you all (Greg, Michael and youself) for the rapid and

Debian/Stretch: how to boot in text mode

2017-02-01 Thread Ennio-Sr
Hi all!

After upgrading to Stretch I'm unable to find a way to boot with no GUI.
I tried setting 'GRUB-GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX="text" in /etc/default/grub,
moving to 'K01gdm3' all 'S??gdm3' instances in /etc/rc?.d, but nothing
happens.
Any help, please?

Bluetooth: unable to pair Apple Wireless Keyboard Mod. A1016

2017-01-28 Thread Ennio-Sr
Hi all!
Has any of you benn able to pair the subject keyboard with bluetooth
under linux debian/jessie or stretch?
Using bluetoothctl 'pair xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx'
if I don't touch any key, nothing happens, and after a while I get:
Failed to pair: org.bluez.Error.AuthenticationTimeout

In case I enter '', bluetoothctl will say:
[Agent] PIN code: 939765
I enter this code and again it says
[Agent] PIN code: 118685
and so on until it stops with the AuthenticationTimeout error.

In /var/log/messages there is something like:
,,, Bluetooth-WARNING **: Could not load pin-code-database.xml

Trying old 'hidd --search' (that worked wonderfully in older Squeeze)
would say: Connecting ..
and then:

Can't get device information: function not implemented.

I'm completely lost and frustrated.
Can you help me? Thanks in advance, Ennio

Bluetooth mouse and keyboard not detected after pause

Hi all!

The following message remained unanswered on debian-powerpc NG.
I hope there is somebody among the many more followers of this list who
may have had a similar problem with Squeeze. I'm particularly curious to
know whether upgrading to Wheezy could solve the problem.

Thanks for your attention.

Is it possible to recover PG-8.4 databases from raw data?

2012-11-18 Thread Ennio-Sr
Hi all,

having messed up my GNU/Linux installation (squeeze/wheezy/sid) I had to
reinstall it but forgot to dump my PG database. I do have a fair recent
dump in my laptop but

I would like to know whether it is still possible to recover

from raw data, i.e. files in '/var/lib/postgresql/8.4/main'
which I copied to a backup disk before *re-formatting /var /usr* dirs
while installing Debian/Squeeze.
More than a necessity this is a challenge that I took to learn a bit
more about how things work in postgresql.

I read in docs that Debian sets thing a bit different from the simple
postgresql installation, so this should be the right NG to ask for help.

That said my system is now running under:

Linux 2.6.32-5-686 #1 SMP Sun Sep 23 09:49:36 UTC 2012 i686 GNU/Linux
postgresql-8.4/squeeze uptodate 8.4.13-0squeeze1
postgresql-client-8.4/squeeze uptodate 8.4.13-0squeeze1
postgresql-client-common/squeeze uptodate 113+squeeze1
postgresql-common/squeeze uptodate 113+squeeze1

a cluster was created in the same directory as before and I overwrote it
with the files in my backup disk.
I created user in the new installed pg-8.4 and, after starting pg, I see
that:
user$ psql mydb
does work, mut no data are found:

Target width for wrapped format is 100.
Output format is wrapped.
No relations found.
  List of databases
   Name| Owner | Encoding | Collation | Ctype | Access privileges
---+--+--+---+---+---
 mydb | ennio| LATIN1 | en_US | en_US |
 postgres | postgres | LATIN1 | en_US | en_US |
 template0 | postgres | LATIN1 | en_US | en_US | =c/postgres
 : postgres=CTc/postgres
 template1 | postgres | LATIN1 | en_US | en_US | =c/postgres
 : postgres=CTc/postgres
(4 rows)

In an old post by Tom Lane, one of the PG's authors, I read that copying
old files in the same dir should work. So I'm wondering why it didn't
work in my case.

To this respect I fear this could be related to the situation I had
before re-installation.
AAMOF I tried to install pg-9.1 (from wheezy) but pg_upgradecluster
didn't work,(*) so I came back to previous 8.4 version (but probably I
didn't downgrade postgresql-client as well.
As I continued to use mydb without noticing any irregularity I was not
aware of any problem until, trying to downgrade to squeeze all wheezy
packages, I removed postgresql-client 9.1 sure that it was useless as I
was running pg-8.4 :-(.
After a rboot I realized the mess caused by that removal and so decided
to re-install squeeze from scratch

May be I should install postgres-client/wheezy to see if Tom Lane's
suggestion works?

Do you have any similar experience?

Thanks for your attention.
Regards, Ennio

(*)
This is the impasse emerging from that upgrading:

postgresql/wheezy uptodate 9.1+134wheezy1
postgresql-client/wheezy uptodate 9.1+134wheezy1
postgresql-client-common/wheezy uptodate 134wheezy1
Linux deby.ei.hnet 2.6.32-trunk-686 #1 SMP Sun Jan 10 06:32:16 UTC 2010
i686 GNU/Linux]

I upgraded pg_8.4 to 9.1 and run pg_upgradecluster but if I try to
connect with:
$ psql mydb -p 5433 (to make sure everything is ok) I get:

psql: FATAL: role ennio does not exist

su - postgres createuser ennio, warns:

createuser: creation of new role failed: ERROR: role ennio already exists

Trying to ocnnect as postgres (psql -p 5433) I get the warning in
subject.

Iceweasel, Flashplayer and Google Finance

2012-10-13 Thread Ennio-Sr

Hi all!

SHORT QUESTION:
Can you see Google Finance graghics *interactively* using
Iceweasel=15.0 and Shockwave Flash_11.2.r... on Squeeze?

LONG QUESTION:

[using:
flashplayer-mozilla/squeeze uptodate 3:11.2.202.243-dmo3
iceweasel/squeeze-backports uptodate 17.0~a2+20121004042009-1~bpo60+1
on:
Linux deby.ei.hnet 2.6.32-trunk-686 #1 SMP Sun Jan 10 06:32:16 UTC 2010
i686 GNU/Linux]

On my PC, iceweasel is no longer able to show Google Finance graphics
(those relating to a particular share quotations in a certain period
)correctly:

- when a flash plugin is enabled (no matter whether it is
mozilla's or Adobe's or flashplugin-nonfree's), no graphic appears
- disabling the flash plugin a graphic is shown with the warning:

For the ubercool interactive charts, you need to install the Adobe
   Flash Player.

moreover,if I try to get the graphic for a different period (6m, 1y, 5y)
a new blank window appears only!

Downgrading iceweasel to a previous version (3.5.??) doesn't help at all
because the simple access to google finance will result in the killing of
the browser with an illegal instruction notice in xterm.

After disabling all the plugins (Tools:Addons:Plugins) I get the default
Google Finance graphic (which, BTW, seems to be a .swf itself and I
would expect it would not show up when plugins are disabled!?)

I have no clues whatsoever to establish what is wrong. AAOF before last
upgrade a couple of weeks ago everything worked smoothly. Then Google Gmail
started to complain about the iceweasel version I was using and I
changed that...;(

I may have inadvertently deleted some 'assisting' package, which I'm
enable to establish. [For sure I zapped /usr/X11R6 directory, but X
seems to be working perfectly using Xorg].
What I should like to know is if somebody can check and tell me what he
sees on Google Finance, i.e. does he see the graphic *interactively*, in
the sense that moving the cursor along the graphic curve the values
shown in the left upper corner do change?

Thanks for your attention. Regards,
 Ennio

Thank you David, you're right: I was trying to contact the Italian

So, this is a good chance for me to apologize.
