beep command seems to be generating tone of incorrect frequency

2010-01-31 Thread Foss User
I was using the beep command in the 'beep' package to generate tones.
I find that it doesn't quite behave as expected. I ran the following
two commands:

$ beep -f 440 -l 1000
$ beep -f 880 -l 1000

The 880 Hz sound sounded lower in pitch than 440 Hz sound.

Also, it sounds out of tune with the sound generated by the following commands:

$ ecasound -i tone,sine,440,1 -o alsa
$ ecasound -i tone,sine,840,1 -o alsa

Note that the output of this command sounds proper, i.e. 880 Hz sounds
higher in pitch than 440 Hz. Is this a bug in the beep command?

Decibel value mentioned to tones (siggen package) not working as expected

2010-01-31 Thread Foss User
I am using the tones command from siggen package.

$ rm notes.wav; tones -w notes.wav 1000 4...@-2 0 4...@-4  play notes.wav

The command generates 3 tones, each one second long

1. 440 Hz at -2 dB
2. 0 Hz (silence)
3. 440 Hz at -4 dB

However, both the first and third tones sounds equally loud. From the
decibel values I have given, the first tone should have sounded louder
than the third. Can someone tell me what is going on?

N.B. The 'play' command is from sox package.

If you run the ps command again at this point, is it still running (btw, pgrep
is helpful for this type of command)?  Have you check the vncserver logs (I
can't recall off the top of my head where they are... maybe ~/.vnc)?  I assume
you have network interfaces up and running.

Yes, I have included the VNC server logs in my original post. If you
see in the logs, it is unable to find some font directories and thus
ignoring those paths. Could it be a reason for the problem?

Here are the logs again for your convenience:

Handle paths with spaces

2010-01-07 Thread Foss User
This is my directory structure:
.
| a.sh
| a.txt
|
+---foo bar
| b.txt
|
+---santa
| | c.txt
| |
| \---humpty dumpty
| e.txt
|
\---test
d.txt

I want to do some operation on each file ending with .txt. However,
this script wouldn't work because in each iteration it gets one word
from the output of find.

Script:

for file in `find -name *.txt`
do
echo file: $file
done

Execution:

$ sh a.sh
file: ./a.txt
file: ./foo
file: bar/b.txt
file: ./santa/c.txt
file: ./santa/humpty
file: dumpty/e.txt
file: ./test/d.txt

You can see how ./santa/humpty dumpty/e.txt has been broken into two
iterations. Any way to resolve this?

What is the right way to fix LANG or locale such that quotes appear properly?

2010-01-05 Thread Foss User
On my terminal (PuTTY terminal), I see that the quotes are displayed
incorrectly. They appear as a with a caret over it. Here is an output:

debian:~# echo $LANG
en_IN
debian:~# gcc a.c
a.c: In function âmainâ:
a.c:6: error: âasâ undeclared (first use in this function)
a.c:6: error: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once
a.c:6: error: for each function it appears in.)

Currently, I am fixing by changing the LANG to en_US like this:

debian:~# export LANG=en_US
debian:~# gcc a.c
a.c: In function 'main':
a.c:6: error: 'as' undeclared (first use in this function)
a.c:6: error: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once
a.c:6: error: for each function it appears in.)

What is the right way to fix this problem?

read command not reading from pipe. why?

2010-01-04 Thread Foss User
I see that the read command stores input entered only on the console
into the variables. Example:

$ read a
foo
$ echo $a
foo

But when I don't enter input on the console by keyboard, but pipe it
into the standard input of read, I am unable to store the input into
the variable.

$ echo bar | read a
$ echo $a
foo

However, the help of read says this:

$ help read
read: read [-ers] [-a array] [-d delim] [-i text] [-n nchars] [-p
prompt] [-t timeout] [-u fd] [name ...]
Read a line from the standard input and split it into fields.

So, why is it not reading the line from standard input when input is
passed to it using a pipe?

Of course, this doesn't do what I need. The names are split wherever

Help needed in getting WiFi working with Debian

the SSID and WPA2-PSK key I have set. Channel of the router is set to

I just checked that I don't have the firmware-iwlwifi package

some other firmware package being installed? Can I verify this

Re: Help needed in getting WiFi working with Debian

2009-11-01 Thread Foss User
Thanks everyone. I got my WiFi up. Sharing the details here in case it
helps someone in future.

1. aptitude update; aptitude install firmware-iwlwifi
2. modprobe -r iwl3945; modprobe iwl3945 (I am not sure whether step
was required)

But I got this message in /var/log/messages - ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP):
wlan0: link is not ready

So, I thought I would do this.

3. ifconfig wlan0 up

The amber indicator started glowing (but not blinking as it should if
it is connected to a WiFi network) and I still got the same error
message in /var/log/messages

4. ifconfig wlan0 down

Turned it down since I thought it didn't help. The amber light went off.

5. Right clicked the network icon in gnome panel and selected Edit
Connections, went to Wireless tab and clicked Add. Entered SSID,
selected Mode as Infrastructure, left the BSSID field blank, copied
MAC address from the output of ifconfig wlan0, left MTU to
'Automatic'.

6. Next went to 'Wireless Security' tab, selected 'WPA WPA2
personal' and entered the WPA2 key I previously configured in the
wireless router.

On pressing 'Apply' button, it automatically started connecting and
successfully connected.

I have a question to the experts though. In step 5 and 6, I had to
manually configure wlan0. However, I never had to do such
configuration for eth1 when I was using Ethernet. Why so?

I used lsof commands to see what files are opened by the various music players.

rhythmbox is opening some file /dev/shm/pulse-shm-foo while vlc and

FOO or foo are placeholders i am using instead of some numbers.

If you comment out the lines for your network interfaces (by putting a

will manage the connections. E.g. from my 'interfaces' file,

Leave the lines for the loopback interface alone though.

These are the only lines I have in my /etc/network/interfaces

# The loopback network interface

But, network manager is not managing the network connections.

There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon.

Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not

The last error message was:

connection was broken.

GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in.

Judging from the output of my system, I think aptitude why merely
prints out reason why a package *could* be installed. Check with
dpkg -l | grep twm if twm actually is installed. The above works
well also with metacity, sawfish or whatever else (see: aptitude show
 x-window-manager).

This would also explain why you're not seeing any twm running -
simply because it ain't installed :).

Why burning ISO of a multisession disc results in a disc that doesn't have multisession?

2009-05-24 Thread Foss User
1. I used Brasero to write a disc with this option enabled: Leave the
disc open to add other files. Let us call this dvd1.

2. I created an .iso image of dvd1 like this: mount if=/dev/cdrom of=dvd1.iso

3. I opened Brasero again, and selected Burn image and tried burning
dvd1.iso into another DVD. Let us call this other DVD as dvd2.iso

Observations:

1. I was able to import session and add new files to dvd1 later with Brasero.

2. I was NOT able to do so in dvd2. When I inserted dvd2, Brasero
never showed this as a media to which I can wrote.

Why?

Can someone please help me in finding out which word list file is used
by 'aspell' command to match words?

Here is an example:

$ echo pacier orbier | aspell list
orbier

So, aspell identifies the word pacier but unable to find orbier. I
am unable to find on my system which has the word, pacier. Please
help.

Unable to start postgresql on Debian

2009-04-25 Thread Foss User
I installed postgresql using the following commands:

aptitude update
aptitude install postgresql

I tried to start it:

/etc/init.d/postgresql-8.3 start

But I don't find any process with the 'sql' string in it in the ps
list. Also, I am unable to connect using psql. There are no logs in
/var/log/postgresql directory.

Could someone please help in troubleshooting this?

I did a little bit of troubleshooting myself by putting echo
statements in the /etc/init.d/postgresql-8.3 file and the script it
calls: /usr/share/postgresql-common/init.d-functions

The script is looking for /etc/postgresql/8.3 directory but it does
not exist on my Debian Squeeze. So, the init script fails. Could
someone please tell me why this happened.

I checked all the postgre .deb files in my /var/apt/cache/archives
directory. None of the postgre .deb files have this
/etc/postgresql/8.3 directory. has something gone wrong with the deb
packages in testing?

 lenny-template:~# cat /etc/network/interfaces
 # The loopback network interface

This is your problem, you probably want to change that to auto.

 iface eth0 inet static
         address 10.31.253.153
         netmask 255.255.255.0
         network 10.31.253.0
         broadcast 10.31.253.255
         gateway 10.31.253.1
         # dns-* options are implemented by the resolvconf package, if
 installed
         dns-nameservers 10.100.8.203

Then I edit only the 'address' line of 'iface eth0 inet static' to:

 address 10.31.253.154

and issue the command: /etc/init.d/networking restart.

After that when I run ipconfig command, I see only iface lo in the
output. If I run ipconfig -a command, then I see iface eth0 too but
its ip address is still the old one: 10.31.253.153

The reason is that /etc/init.d/networking restart boils down to
 ifdown -a --exclude=lo; ifup -a --exclude=lo and ifup -a only brings
up interfaces that are marked auto in /etc/network/interfaces.

Running ifup eth0 will bring the interface up again and change your IP
 address.

 Sven

So, should I add the following line:

auto eth0

before this line:

allow-hotplug eth0

?

What is the use of allow-hotplug eth0? Can I remove the allow-hotplug line?

How does Debian know how to execute my .NET programs even if I don't specify mono?

2009-02-22 Thread Foss User
I have a program compiled with mcs meant for mono called: hello.exe.
If I just do ./hello.exe it runs automatically. How does it happen?
why do I not have to do mono hello.exe. Why does it run only with
./hello.exe

I mean Linux wouldn't execute a code unless it knows the interpreter
from the she-bang line or it is an ELF32 file. but my hello.exe is
neither ELF file nor does it have a shebang line on the top. how then
Linux understands that it must be executed with mono?

Outputs from my console:

(hello.exe is a C# program compiled using mcs. nc.exe is Netcat for
windows. nc.exe is not a C# or .NET program)

How to change LANG = en_US ?

2009-02-05 Thread Foss User
I want that when Debian boots and I log into gnome and open
gnome-terminal, echo $LANG shows en_US instead of en_IN.

I found that in /etc/environment, the content was:

LANG=en_IN

So, I changed it to LANG=en_US and rebooted the system. But after
rebooting and opening gnome-terminal, I find echo $LANG to output
en_IN again.

So, where should I make this change so that after rebooting echo $LANG
outputs en_US ?

Re: How to change LANG = en_US ?

2009-02-05 Thread Foss User
If export is the only way to do it, I can of course put the export
LANG=en_US statement in /etc/profile.

However, I am thinking then what is the use of /etc/environment? What
purpose does /etc/environment serve if changing LANG=en_IN to
LANG=en_US in /etc/environment doesn't affect the LANG shell
variable of my terminals?

how to set LANG=en_US required to make mrxvt display some characters properly?

2009-02-03 Thread Foss User
I have observed that mrxvt doesn't work properly with en_IN. In man
pages, the quotes, etc. appear like a with a caret on top and boxes. I
was suggested to change my LANG variable to en_US and it worked. The
quotes started appearing like quotes in the man pages with this
variable set to en_US. I have two questions:

1. Is there a better way to solve this?

2. If I have to set LANG=en_US, I would like to know the configuration
file where I can set it once and it will be applied to my Debian
whenever I boot it. I tried changing /etc/environment to en_US, but
whenever I reboot, the shell variable LANG is again found as en_IN
even though /etc/environment remain as en_US. (Yes, I know I can set
it in /etc/profile but I am thinking that there might be a
configuration file or a better place to put this setting)

Re: Who is allowed to help on this list. was: Re: Scim does not work with openoffice -- off-line

2009-01-28 Thread Foss User
I find the idea that knowing 'sufficient basics' is a requirement to
be able to help others. Most of the times, it is simple configuration
file changes that might be enough to get a software working. One does
not need 'sufficient basics' to tell someone else what configuration
changes he made.

Of course, the person taking the advice might sometimes need
'sufficient basics' to be sure whether that the configuration changes
he would be doing on the advice of someone else, does not turn out to
be fatal or deletes important files or simply grant some wings to the
computer that would fly away from the house.

I have received a lot of help from experts and non-experts and I would
like all the advice flowing in when I face issues.

I said only that I had done it, not that it was a universal solution. I did

You appear to believe that one should not ever try to help anyone unless one

I am bringing this back online because I would like the opinions of the rest

never try to help, even where we have met and, from a practical point of view
