beep command seems to be generating tone of incorrect frequency
I was using the beep command in the 'beep' package to generate tones. I find that it doesn't quite behave as expected. I ran the following two commands: $ beep -f 440 -l 1000 $ beep -f 880 -l 1000 The 880 Hz sound sounded lower in pitch than 440 Hz sound. Also, it sounds out of tune with the sound generated by the following commands: $ ecasound -i tone,sine,440,1 -o alsa $ ecasound -i tone,sine,840,1 -o alsa Note that the output of this command sounds proper, i.e. 880 Hz sounds higher in pitch than 440 Hz. Decibel value mentioned to tones (siggen package) not working as expected
I am using the tones command from siggen package. $ rm notes.wav; tones -w notes.wav 1000 4...@-2 0 4...@-4 play notes.wav The command generates 3 tones, each one second long 1. 440 Hz at -2 dB 2. 0 Hz (silence) 3. 440 Hz at -4 dB However, both the first and third tones sounds equally loud. From the decibel values I have given, the first tone should have sounded louder than the third. Can someone tell me what is going on? N.B. Re: Help needed in getting WiFi working with Debian
Thanks everyone. I got my WiFi up. Sharing the details here in case it helps someone in future. 1. aptitude update; aptitude install firmware-iwlwifi 2. modprobe -r iwl3945; modprobe iwl3945 (I am not sure whether step was required) But I got this message in /var/log/messages - ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready So, I thought I would do this. 3. ifconfig wlan0 up The amber indicator started glowing (but not blinking as it should if it is connected to a WiFi network) and I still got the same error message in /var/log/messages 4. ifconfig wlan0 down Turned it down since I thought it didn't help. The amber light went off. 5. Right clicked the network icon in gnome panel and selected Edit Connections, went to Wireless tab and clicked Add. Entered SSID, selected Mode as Infrastructure, left the BSSID field blank, copied MAC address from the output of ifconfig wlan0, left MTU to 'Automatic'. 6. Next went to 'Wireless Security' tab, selected 'WPA WPA2 personal' and entered the WPA2 key I previously configured in the wireless router. On pressing 'Apply' button, it automatically started connecting and successfully connected. I have a question to the experts though. In step 5 and 6, I had to manually configure wlan0. However, I never had to do such configuration for eth1 when I was using Ethernet. Why so? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? How does Debian know how to execute my .NET programs even if I don't specify mono?
I have a program compiled with mcs meant for mono called: hello.exe. If I just do ./hello.exe it runs automatically. How does it happen? why do I not have to do mono hello.exe. Why does it run only with ./hello.exe I mean Linux wouldn't execute a code unless it knows the interpreter from the she-bang line or it is an ELF32 file. but my hello.exe is neither ELF file nor does it have a shebang line on the top. how then Linux understands that it must be executed with mono? How to change LANG = en_US ?
I want that when Debian boots and I log into gnome and open gnome-terminal, echo $LANG shows en_US instead of en_IN. I found that in /etc/environment, the content was: LANG=en_IN So, I changed it to LANG=en_US and rebooted the system. But after rebooting and opening gnome-terminal, I find echo $LANG to output en_IN again. So, where should I make this change so that after rebooting echo $LANG outputs en_US ? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Re: How to change LANG = en_US ?
If export is the only way to do it, I can of course put the export LANG=en_US statement in /etc/profile. However, I am thinking then what is the use of /etc/environment? What purpose does /etc/environment serve if changing LANG=en_IN to LANG=en_US in /etc/environment doesn't affect the LANG shell variable of my terminals? how to set LANG=en_US required to make mrxvt display some characters properly?
I have observed that mrxvt doesn't work properly with en_IN. In man pages, the quotes, etc. appear like a with a caret on top and boxes. I was suggested to change my LANG variable to en_US and it worked. The quotes started appearing like quotes in the man pages with this variable set to en_US. I have two questions: 1. Is there a better way to solve this? 2. If I have to set LANG=en_US, I would like to know the configuration file where I can set it once and it will be applied to my Debian whenever I boot it. I tried changing /etc/environment to en_US, but whenever I reboot, the shell variable LANG is again found as en_IN even though /etc/environment remain as en_US. (Yes, I know I can set it in /etc/profile but I am thinking that there might be a configuration file or a better place to put this setting) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. I find the idea that knowing 'sufficient basics' is a requirement to be able to help others. Most of the times, it is simple configuration file changes that might be enough to get a software working. One does not need 'sufficient basics' to tell someone else what configuration changes he made. Of course, the person taking the advice might sometimes need 'sufficient basics' to be sure whether that the configuration changes he would be doing on the advice of someone else, does not turn out to be fatal or deletes important files or simply grant some wings to the computer that would fly away from the house. I have received a lot of help from experts and non-experts and I would like all the advice flowing in when I face issues. I did it, it worked for me. That is all I claimed. You appear to believe that one should not ever try to help anyone unless one is a package maintainer. That is surely ridiculous? I am bringing this back online because I would like the opinions of the rest of you. Is it the protocol for this list that only those with in depth expertise should make any attempt to help others? And that those of us who are not experts (and I cannot be the only one) should simply shut up and never try to help, even where we have met and, from a practical point of view (i.e. it worked for us) solved, the problem under discussion?
