Silicom Ethernet adapter ?

1998-06-04 Thread Frere Roy
Hello,

Has anyone heard of PCMCIA Silicom Ethernet adapter? I bought one for my
laptop but now cannot find any support under Debian?

Perhaps there is a known equivalent?

Thanks, Frere Roy

Installing xlib6g for gs on system not using X

1998-02-06 Thread Frere Roy
Hello,

I am installing GhostScript (gs_3.33_6.deb) on my libc6 system. I do
not X windows but svgalibg1_1.2.13-1.deb

The gs package *requires* xlib6g library but when trying to install
that I get the following 3 errors:

ldconfig: warning: can't open /lib/libc5-compat/usr/X11R6/lib (No such
file or directory), skipping

ldconfig: warning: can't open /usr/X11R6/lib/libICE.so.6 (No
such file or directory), skipping

ldconfig: warning: can't open /lib/libc5-compat/usr/X11R6/lib (No such
file or directory), skipping

Since these are only warnings can I safely ignore them or is something
broken?

Thanks, Roy

modconf and whiptail

1998-02-05 Thread Frere Roy
I am trying to install modconf_0.2.15.deb but I get the message
whiptail is not installed

I have, however, installed newt0.21_0.21-3.deb which has installed
whiptail.

Have I missed something?

Thanks, Roy

dftp out through a firewall

1997-12-06 Thread Frere Roy
On our site a new firewall has been installed and now inorder to ftp it
is necessary to do the following

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# ftp 194.248.7.3
Connected to 194.248.7.3.
220 WinProxy FTP Gateway ready, enter [EMAIL PROTECTED]:port]
Name (194.248.7.3:root):

Then I can type my '[EMAIL PROTECTED]'

I cannot figure out how to overcome this hurdle when I use dftp as it
is not expecting a Proxy promt.

Any ideas?

(Please, no comments about the fact the proxy is running under Windows
NT ! - I know what you all must be thinking !)

Bug report already filed. Joey reports that it has been
sent upstream. No activity on the taper mailing list
([EMAIL PROTECTED]) about this after I posted either.

Thanks.

I'm beginning to think that the programme Taper is no longer being
supported by its author.

I've sent 2 messages to the names I found in the docs, namely :

[EMAIL PROTECTED] and [EMAIL PROTECTED]

but they were both returned 'user unknown'

It's a pity as Taper seems like a very good backup programme but with
the current bug it is virtually unusable.

Filling in the dialog boxes with Taper 6.8.2

1997-11-26 Thread Frere Roy
Hello,

I've just installed the Taper 6.8.2 backup to tape programme.

I have encountered a curious phenomena namely that I cannot type any
characters in the message boxes, i.e. name of backup etc.

The cursor left and right arrows are the only things that work.

The programme is a semi-graphic type of programme i.e. colours, cursor
driven menu, etc. and I was wondering if I needed to do something with
setterm.

Anyone got an idea?

p.s. I am not using Xterm and am using a notebook with colour
TFT screen.

Thanks, Frere Roy

Re: tar, cpio, or cp?

1997-11-25 Thread Frere Roy
tar cf /path | ( cd other/path ; tar xvf -)
cp -a /path /other/path

Are there real differences between the three? What about symlinks,
hard links, empty dirs, devices? I know, I could read the manuals,

Your question prompted me to think about the way I make backups of my
Debian system to tape.

I use: tar cvf /dev/st0 .

Could someone on the list please tell me if I can restore my complete
working system from the archive made in this fashion - or suggest a
better way !

Thanks, Frere Roy

Re: Configuring dftp to get hamm

1997-11-20 Thread Frere Roy
 As stated in the libc5-libc6-Mini-HOWTO:
When you run dselect, select access from the menu and anser the questions as
 follows:

 ftp site: ftp.debian.org
 debian directory: /debian
 dist. to get:
  dists/unstable/main dists/unstable/non-free dists/unstable/contrib

Thanks, but I am not using dselect. I am trying to configure the
.dftprc file for dftp

If anyone can help me with the configuration of this file inorder to
get the hamm updtaes I would be grateful.

Best wishes, Frere Roy

Configuring dftp to get hamm

1997-11-19 Thread Frere Roy
Hello,

After having successfully upgraded from lib5 to libc6 following to the
letter Scott Ellis's mini-HOWTO I am now trying to
configure dftp to upgrade my whole system to hamm.

Can someone help me with the configuration of my /~dftprc file it
seems to keep wanting to look in binary-binary-i386 !

~/.dftprc

include: devel
exclude: electronics,games,graphics,hamradio,math,sound,tex,web,x11
ftpsite: ftp.us.debian.org
ftpdir: /debian/hamm/hamm
arch:binary-i386

.logfile
cd /debian/hamm/hamm
250 CWD command successful.
get devel/binary-binary-i386/Packages.gz
devel/binary-binary-i386/Packages.gz
200 PORT command successful.
550 devel/binary-binary-i386/Packages.gz: No such file or directory.
bye
221 Goodbye.

Thanks Frere Roy
