Install pppconfig. Run it as root and answer the questions. You can add
yourself as a ppp user in the Advanced menu. You will then be able to
start ppp with pon and stop it with poff.

That's what I usually do, but for a newbie, wvdial is a handy app.

I think it needs ppp installed though.
Does it drag it in as a dependency, or is it a separate install scenario.

I think I will go with the nvidia installer. I'll post back with
results of how that goes.

Well, an update: I just ran the nvidia script today (169.09) and it
worked. I told it to not look for a precompiled interface on
nvidia.com, so it did some compiling on its own, I think, but anyways,
after I updated xorg.conf and restarted X, I saw the great big nVidia
splash screen.

Thanks again to every who replied for your help.

Good to know, Jimmy.
Thanks.

'When I get the time', I'll follow suit.

It looks like a config problem, which happens with usb mice.
Are there any other aspects?
Is gpm involved?

Two ways to fix it:

Adjust config of xserver-xorg;
Install gpm, which isn't a bad idea anyway, and the config of that
gives comprehensive treatment of usb mice.

I had a intermittent USB mouse/keyboard non-responding prob and it
turned out to be due to me allowing the BIOS to overclock my AMD64
chip

Less likely, but also.
Perhaps we could get the 'usual' sources out of the way first, before we
need to dig any deeper.

Why?

Because it does all the config for you.
I used it for the first time the other day - installing a modem for fax.
It did it all in the install procedure, detected the serial port the
modem was on, installed the strings, ready to go.

It doesn't teach you as much as the ncurses pppconfig interface - but it
is handy for a newbie.

David Palmer.
