Re: Open Source Statistical Packages?

I'm not a great programmer, but I'd be willing to help. (I'm practicing, but coding in C is not a one night learning experience :)). Look at www.r-project.org and there is a pspp project (spss) somewhere out there. Have a look at sal.kachinatech.com HTH, Jens Hi- Don't even waste your time with pspp. It has been stopped a long time ago, and it was pretty much alpha anyways. R is a very powerfull statistics package. You will be able to import your data from SAS, nothing will be lost. R is *the* prefered statistical software by staticians doing research.R implements the S language. Therefore, it is a language and environment for statistical computing. This, of course, implies a learning curve, because implies learning to program in R. This, however, gives you more flexibility and power. I used SPSS my self, but I decided that R had everything I needed, so I gave up on SPSS altogether, and I don't regret it.I'm trying to evangelize a few people about R. I can also interact with people using other software packages, so their choice doesn't affect me. R has very powerful graphics capabilities, *way* better than anything I've used (I haven't used SAS, though). R is available as a Debian package, but you will have to edit your sources files (instructions on the URL Jens gave you). Updating R is, of course, no sweat in a Debian system. The R software is developped by a very serious team of programmers, mostly staticians. One of the main developers holds a Chair of Statistics in Oxford. Don't forget to get the documentation and sign up to the R mailing list, where you can ask questions (after you read the documentation, :-) ) Best reagards Henry
Chronically broken package - bugs? In tetex-bin AND apt-get?
Hello- I'm sorry if I sound hysterical, but I have reasons for concern. In fact, I'm truly desperate: it has been over a three months that I try to tackle this problem whenever I have some time. I was never able to use TeX on my potato, because the package somehow got broken. And I mean *badly* broken. In dselect, it appear as *RI, which means that I should reinstall it. But **nothing works** Purging tetex-bin (and all it's dependencies, of course) results in nothing... apt-get remove tetex-bin - tells me that the package is in a very inconsistent state and you should consider reinstalling it before removing. But... apt-get install reinstall tetex-bin - no good and apt-get -f install tetex-bin tetex-doc tetex-lib tetex-base abd then apt-get -f install You get the same error, below siddhi:~# apt-get -f install Reading Package Lists... Even dpkg with the force option... With all the time and effort I put in solving this problem, I'm sttil at ground zero with this package. I am seriously considering the possibility that: 1) There is a bug in the tetex-bin package 2) There is a bug in apt-get (!) Why am I considering apt-get? Because if I try to install *anything*, apt-get simply goes crazy with stupid messages. For instance, when I apt-get install grep-dctrl: The following NEW packages will be installed: grep-dctrl 0 packages upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 23 not upgraded. 15 packages not fully installed or removed. I ask this because unless you alien -d x.tgz the packaging system will not recognize the stuff you just installed. HTH. Henry
