cannot execute /etc/init.d/rcS
FYI: After updating today testing, I could not reboot with the message: cannot execute /etc/init.d/rcS The problem is that somehow the link to /bin/sh is missing. Remounting / read-write and linking /bin/bash to /bin/sh does the job. boot kernel raid + lvm + lilo
Hi all, I compiled the latest kernel (2.6.25.7 SMP x86_64) from kernel.org and installed it. I ran lilo. (I am basically forced to use lilo since grub never managed to boot from root partition located of mdadm + lvm partition). With the new kernel the mdadm cannot find its hard drives and the booting ands in (initramfs) mode. Looking in /dev I also cannot see my sd* disks. The first error messages look like: snip Begin: Mounting root file system... ... Begin: Running /scripts/local-top ... I think that the problem is more about the kernel, not about the mdadm. I suppose I somehow did not comiped in the kernel something needed for finding the sATA devices, but I used the default kernel configuration and I was thinking that this should work. Morover, I cannot boot the LinuxOLD image (which was working perfectly before), since it ends in a kernel panic message. Any idea on how to boot this machine and bring back in a working condition is welcome. Cheers, Ivan

Why does kernel 2.6.25.7 not find my /dev/sdb and /dev/sdc devices and 2.6.18-6 does? I compiled 2.6.25.7 using /boot/config-2.6.18-6-amd64 configuration...

5.1 surround sound with NVidia4
Hi all, I have working sound system, but I hear only two out of my 5.1 channels. Any idea how to make them all working? Any links related to the topic are also welcome. I googled around, but I couldn't find a solution. I hear sound from the front left, right and subwoofer speakers during mp3 playing with Rhythmbox, and I am able to hear sound from the backward speakers only by unmuting Duplicate in alsamixer, but that's not what I want. I never managed to hear a sound from the center speaker. I have a NVidia4 chipset based board with a Realtek ALC850 8-channel codec on it. I find this (http://grub.enbug.org/LVMandRAID) article claiming that I have to enter insmod lvm in a file named grub.cfg. But I don't have a file like this in my system?! Ivan, As for LVM support for grub: the MBR has files pointing to your root which in this term means place where the grub files are which is NOT in an LVM. In your case this should be /dev/md0 or however GRUB reads that (I confess, I don't know). I just installed, in a vm, debian using this image: http://ftp.nl.debian.org/debian/dists/etch/main/installer-amd64/current/images/netboot/mini.iso which should be current snapshot of testing, net install mini.iso. I did that to make sure we had the same OS. I partitioned two 8G drives thusly: 1 120MB primary, 1 6.5GB extended. I made the 1st partition into a raid1 (md0) and made the 2nd into a raid1 (md1) I put an a swap file on each drive (1.5G each, why run raid on a swap? double your swap file space and you can ping between the two if you need them) I put LVM (System) on top of md1 and divided that into two logical volumes (root 4.5G and home 2G or so) I then was asked to install Grub into MBR of (hd0,0) which I agreed to. rebooted. works just fine. Cut your losses, if you have a network install, just do it again (unless you are metered) and this time install grub on the physical HD. Then use the grub command to mirror it to the raid1 member. HTH. To make the long story - short, it works! There are a few things which are not set/clear and I would like to clear out, like for example: 1. Why the installation offered me lilo, not grub? I guess when I switch to grub, I would still have the same problems as before.. 2. Why the drive letter assignment changed before and after the reboot(comparing the partition table list and the fdisk log) 3. What do the entries from fdisk -l like Disk /dev/md1 doesn't contain a valid partition table mean? 4. What are devices /dev/md-0 and /dev/md-1? All of those I'll try to solve. For details see below. Thanks again, Ivan Log of the installation (only the relevant entries): 01. Moreover, obviously the bios does not see the /dev/md0 array, since I guess first the raid array should be started in order for grub to be loaded. I explicitly issued grub-install /dev/md0 using the recovery mode of the debian installer, but that did not help. Thanks in advance, Ivan Ivan, you can not put grub (/boot) on an LVM. You can put /boot on a raid1. If you made one raid1 device and made one partition on md0 you will not be able to boot (assuming you then put LVM on top of that one partition/used all of md0). No, that's not the problem. I followed exactly the mentioned article. There, two disks are used and partitioned in two partitions - the first ones are used for one RAID1, which is formatted as ext3 and used for the /boot directory (i.e. no lvm for /boot). The second partitions on both disks are arranged in a second RAID1 array on which I have created separate logical volumes for / /usr /var and so on. Redo what you did only make either two partitions to md0, one for boot (110Mb is large enough for most) and on partition2 put the rest of your system ontop of the LVM. Or, partition your two hds to have two mdadm raid1 . One small md0 for /boot and one md1 for the system with LVM on it. You will then have to install grub on to hdd or if hdc fails, you will not be able to boot as grub will be installed onto hdc MBR. Makes sense? I taught I have to install the grub on the raid array, thus the grub will put a copy of itself on the first partition on both hard drives, used for the raid1, right? Hi all, I got an old, cheap Qware EasyCam webcam. I have no idea what is the model. In the end it does not metter much. I followed the LDP The Webcam HOWTO on http://tldp.org/HOWTO/html_single/Webcam-HOWTO/ Everything looks basically fine up to the point I try to get some information from my webcam. disks available
Hi all, a simple question: Is there a way under linux, as a user (i.e. without superuser privileges) to find out how many hard drives are physically connected on the computer? I am not interested in the info given by /etc/fstab or by the df command, since both of them are showing mounted disks, which is not what I want... kde command line desktop switching
Hi, Does anybody know a shell command that switches to the next desktop in KDE? You might want to have a look at dcop, too. In its man page you will find exactly the example you need: $ dcop kwin KWinInterface nextDesktop That's exactly what I needed + it worked nicely. minimal firewall computer
Hi all, I have a 2 MBit DSL connection at home and I have more or less classical scheme ISP - DSL Modem - Router - home desktop laptops. Since recently somebody hacked into my windowz computer I started thinking of adding a firewall. Since connecting my desktop between the router and the modem is not an option (it must run windowz due to other members of my family), I am thinking of buying the cheapest possible second hand computer which still has two free PCI slots on which to install minimal Debian (no graphics, only firewall), plug two 10/100 Ethernet cards and add it in my scheme like this: ISP - DSL Modem - Firewall - Router - home desktop laptops The question is actually what is the minimal CPU/RAM/HDD requirement for this PC? And do you think this is the optimal solution for an intrusion protection of a small home LAN? Cheers, Ivan -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? debian kernel
Hi, I want to compile the newest (2.6.21.5) kernel on my Debian lenny Centrino laptop. In http://kernel-handbook.alioth.debian.org (2.2) is stated that the kernel offered in Debian repository is: obtained by taking the source from linux-major_version.orig.tar.gz (that is, pristine kernel source, processed by the prune-non-free script) and applying a set of Debian patches. These patches typically implement essential fixes for serious bugs and security holes. Are the essential fixes supplied by the debian patches the same as the kernel.org ones, or it is simply coincidence that the latest version number of the kernel.org kernel (2.6.21.5) and the debian one (2.6.21-5) are the same? And if not, can I apply them to my kernel.org kernel? In the end which approach will give me the kernel with the latest security patches? kernel compilation
Hi all, I was always downloading from www.kernel.org, using always the same .config file, and everything was fine. Up to the point I found out that the newer kernels which were supposed to have new options (CONFIG_ACPI_SLEEP) are not having them. You could switch to another window manager, but what might work better would be to look at Devil's Pie, a window manager top-up program. http://www.burtonini.com/blog/computers/devilspie Some combination of this (which is available as a debian package) and the geometry strings someone else listed might do what you want. The string I have for my Eterm icon is: /usr/bin/Eterm -L 1 --colorBD yellow --select-line -g 101x25 --shade 100 --buttonbar 0 --scrollbar-type next So, I am using the geometry option, but I can only set the dimensions of the terminal, since they are the same. If I set also the position (something like101x25+0+0), if I click four times over my icon I will get four terminals on top of each other. Which I do not want. I took a look at devilspie program. Correct me if I am wrong, but it cannot distinguish different instances from the same application and take different actions according to the instance number which is what I want to do - apply different position for different terminal windows, started from the same icon. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. eterm / gnome window position
Hi all, I prefer to have 4 Eterms open on my desktop. The problem is that every time I have to rearrange them such, that they precisely fit to my screen. I looked at man pages for Eterm, googled a little bit, but I could not find to get first Eterm on the upper left corner, second on upper right, etc. Any ideas how one can do that? Hi, I really do not understand what is the problem. Initially after googling around, I thought I have problem with temperature of my Centrino. Now I have all modules needed for proper kacpid running: % lsmod Module Size Used by thermal17616 - fan 4396 - button 6488 - processor 31816 - ac 4844 - battery10764 - ipw2200 173460 - ieee80211 31144 - ieee80211_crypt 4424 - firmware_class 7592 - snd_intel8x0 30116 - tg3 105804 - snd_intel8x0m 14804 - snd_ac97_codec 94728 - snd_ac97_bus1640 - but I still get gradually after some time running kacpid of 100%. If I do not include *CENTRINO* in my .config file, I do not have this problem. The kern.log shows the following: Mar 15 13:04:22 h1siglushkov kernel: dsmethod-0213: *** Error: Method reached maximum reentrancy limit (255) Mar 15 13:04:22 h1siglushkov kernel: psparse-0508: *** Error: Method execution failed [\RBYT] (Node dff09668), AE_AML_METHOD_LIMIT Mar 15 13:04:22 h1siglushkov kernel: psparse-0508: *** Error: Method execution failed [\_TZ_.TCHG] (Node dff093e8), AE_AML_METHOD_LIMIT Mar 15 13:04:22 h1siglushkov kernel: psparse-0508: *** Error: Method execution failed [\_GPE._L00] (Node dff0ada8), AE_AML_METHOD_LIMIT Mar 15 13:04:22 h1siglushkov kernel:evgpe-0549: *** Error: AE_AML_METHOD_LIMIT while evaluating method [_L00] for GPE[ 0] Any help is appriciated. If that alias is 'ls --color=always', it will always use colors, regardless of the output. The solution will be found in your .bashrc file -- either change the alias to 'ls --color=auto' or remove it entirely, and it should work OK. Thank you all, Just for the record: I am using zsh, and I was having in my ~/.zshrc the following line: alias ls=ls --color now I changed that to: alias ls=ls --color=auto and everything looks fine. In the moment I have configure it such that it shows as an icon unmounted HDD, and when I plug the HDD, I can mount it, but this way this icon is always on my taskbar, it does not disappear when I unmount/unplug the HDD. How can tell the applet that this hdd is actually removable storage? I red that it depends on hal and dbus, but I could not find much more... An usuail order by ALTERNATE
Hi, this is just to inform you that I will never ever again order anything in your company. This is because of the perfect job done by your Call-Center-Team. Short history: 15.12.2005, 15.23h - I orgerd a 1024MB USB from G.A.I.L., seconds later I transfered the required amount to the Alternate account. At this moment on the alternate site the item was shown as Innerhalb von 24h versandfertig. 19.12.2005 - first call to the phone given by mail to me: 01805 / 90 50 40 (EUR 0,12/Min) - I was informed that the item is not on stock and cannot be delivered to me untill 20.12.2005, 10.00h in Bremen, (since I fly back home, and I need the USB stick as a present). A different alternatives (a 512MB stick from G.A.I.L. or 1024 from Kingston) ware offered, and I was told that they can arrive at my place untill 10 o'clock. (~5 minutes waiting and listening to music, ~10 minutes conversation) 19.12.2005 - second call - No item was to be garanteed that it can be at my door untill 10.00h. No chance for Christmas present anymore. (10 minutes music) I desided to get my money back, and buy something from Saturn, but: 19.12.2005 - third call - the USB stick is already sent to me, so they cannot do anything about it... Should I comment on that I fulfilled all requested from ALTERNATE properly. 1. An item expected to arrive on a given day, one day later is still NOT ON STOCK?? 2. THEN the status quo had changed 3 ! times for 30 minutes (all three calls are done in the time interval 12.00 - 12.30)?? 3. The bottom line: I will get (maybe?) a USB stick, at least 2 days later (which is not useful for me anymore), a phone bill with at least 5 euros more, just because I have dared to ask why ALTERNATE does not fulfill their duties... Best regards, Ivan Glushkov P.S.: Sorry to trouble all with this, but there is NOTHING that I can do in this case, then just shareing my experiance with the others. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. On router side I have: Encoding: On MAC filtering: On Mode: WPA (Dynamic) Authentification: Off Pre-shared key Typ: ASCII Pre-shared key (PSK): my_key Wireless: On SSID: MyNet SSID unvisible: On Speed: 54 Mbps Portocol: 802.11g Channel: 11 On notebook side: /etc/network/interfaces: # WLAN Home iface eth1 inet dhcp wireless_essid MyNet wireless_mode managed wireless_channel 11 wireless_enc on /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf: network={ ssid=MyNet key_mgmt=WPA-PSK pairwise=CCMP group=CCMP psk=my_key } And I get: #wpa_supplicant -i eth1 Line 6: Invalid PSK 'my_key'. Line 6: failed to parse psk 'my_key'. Line 7: WPA-PSK accepted for key management, but no PSK configured. Line 7: failed to parse network block. I have version 8.1, but when I tried to get 9.0, it pointed me back to 8.1 unless I wanted to buy a license. I use it to make sure that my code is portable across different compilers, but I have heard that it produces code the underperforms on AMD CPUs (which are what I use). I downloaded the c200Mb of it the other day, no charge and it gave me a licence number with the 'thanks' email. I went to the 9.0 page then clicked on download. How did you do that? As far as I see (http://www.intel.com/cd/software/products/asmo-na/eng/compilers/clin/219937.htm) it is not free... Cheers, Ivan P.S.: In the moment the only way to stop/restart my laptop is by pushing the button.. I had a similar problem not so long ago, when I upgraded from woody to sarge. The cause was an innocent-looking option in the XF86Config-4 configuration file in /etc in the section that related to my graphics card. In the previous version of X under woody, this option hadn't done anything, but when I upgraded X was broken in exactly the way you describe and turning the option off fixed my problem. No error messages, nothing obviously wrong, nothing going wrong at the kernel level either -- just blank screen (actually my monitor went into power saving mode because the card stopped talking to it altogether!!!) The options available are dependent on the graphics card you have so I won't confuse you with the specific option that caused this for me. Instead, can you post your /etc/XF86Config-4 file to this list and we can see Find it attached... if there's anything dodgy about it. Re: installing on a partition

However, I also need XP installed, and I am not sure which I should install on my hard drive first. Install Windows first, then Debian. Otherwise Windows would overwrite your boot manager (lilo or grub). The installer for sarge should even enable you to resize an existing Windows partition, but I would carefully plan the partition table before installing anything (takes less time, involves no risk). Since you are reinstalling everything from scratch that shouldn't be a problem. Just use the Windows installer for creating an NTFS or FAT partition and leave the rest of the disk empty. When you're finished, use the Debian installer to partition the rest. You may want to have a 'shared' partition, on which Windows *and* Linux can write (mp3s, movies...). The best way to do this is to create a large FAT partition because Linux has no (free) NTFS write support. You can do that at install time and select a mount point for it (eg /data). I have installed different distributions of Linux before, and you can usually setup a partition table. Is it similar with Debian? Yes. Although sarge is not yet stable (and it may even take a while to get there) I suggest you use the new sarge installer. Most people think it is more user friendly, especially for new users. The drawback is that you may run into minor or (very unlikely) major problems because there are still some changes made to sarge. On the other hand, you save the possible headache of updating from woody to sarge. And remember: the woody installer cannot resize partitions. If I use a setup like this, will I be prompted for which partition I wish to boot to? The installer will search for existing operating systems and ask you whether Windows should be included in the boot menu. Say 'Yes' and everything will be fine. Of course, if you miss that opportunity, you still can add Windows to the boot menu later. J. I've installed win98 on a vfat partition (first of cource) and after that ( 1 year later) i've installed win200 + professionnal on the same partition ! So, win200 is a ntfs filesystem, do it ? I can write/read without any problem to win. How do you do that? I have tried a lot of thinks, but I never saw sombody writing from Linux to ntfs... Some program, or just options in fstab that I have missed in man page? Ivan Glushkov mess-mate -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble?
