Re: missing file
ok, well when running 'make config' it gets to the sound driver part and lists 4 or 5 *.h files that call for stddef.h, which can't be found. This happened the first time I tried compiling my kernel. Copying /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i486-linux/2.7.2.1/include/stddef.h into /usr/include seems to do the trick.. I am going to try one more thing, but I still can't get the AWE drivers/util package to do anything during kernel compilation. I'll try the other site you gave me, thanks Andree for the blazing fast response. =) With 'real' help like this ML offers, why stick with other commercial OSs? ;) jason -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . missing file
Anyone know what package stddef.h is in? I had to re-install debian in attempts to get my AWE32 drivers to work. I had this problem the first time around and can't remember how I fixed it. BTW, someone mentioned running 'make-kpkg clean' to get things into order so that the AWE drivers package would take hold, but I still try to compile the kernel and the driver is not evident, there are no questions relating to the AWE driver during 'make config'. the install.sh script executes without error, and the files are moved into /usr/src/linux's subdirectories. Anyone know what might be going on? jason -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Trouble? e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] .
audio files
There is a program that comes in RedHat called showaudio. Does anyone know where to snag this for Debian? I can't figure out how to install a RedHat package through Debian, and would prefer not to. If I could just find the source, that would be good enough. Also, I still haven't gotten the AWE32 drivers to work. I ran the install.shscript that came with the driver. I already have basic sound working, and the script seems to detect my existing sound setup OK. I read the documentation several times, but when I run make configto rebuild the kernel, there is no option to select the new driver (AWE32 support never shows up, not even in the lowlevel driver support section) Anyone have a clue as to what I'm doing wrong? The install.sh script executes w/o error. -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Trouble? e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] .

Makefiles
I am running across a few apps that need xmkmf to compile.. where should I go to get all the stuff to deal with these type of make file? actually I am something of a newbie to linux, but I think xmkmf MAKES a makefile from some other type of file, i dunno.. =) been looking for general documentation to no avail.. I got my sound to work, but when I run that little install.sh file inside the /usr/src/awedrv directory, then run make config it never allows for any configuration of the SB32, looks just the same as it did before running the install script.. please help.. =) jason -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Audio Support
Thanks for the fast response on the first note. Now when running 'make config' to configure my kernel (in an attempt to add sound support), my system finds those 5 *.h files that were missing (libc5-dev fixed that). But now I get this.. Compiling Sound Driver v3.5.5-beta for Linux rm -f configure gcc -I/usr/src/kernel-source-2.0.30 /include -o configure configure.c In file included from configure.c:20: /usr/include/stdlib.h:34: stddef.h: No such file or directory. that goes on for the other 4 .h files that were missing earlier (string.h stdio.h, etc) what do I do now? this is kinda puzzling me.. =) jason westervelt [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Audio support
I apologize in advance for being such a newbie at Linux, but I do know a little. I managed to install the Debian base set along with X11, and got it all up and running, even got the Afterstep package up, that was easy and straightforward. When I tried to recompile the kernel to add in sound support, things started to get weird. I have used Slackware in the past (i didn't like it at all) and I got the sound up and running fine. When I download the kernel-source package, and get all the compilers and everything that I *think* I need and install them, running 'make config' works fine until I get to the sound card section. After asking several sound card questions, I get error messages stating that stdio.h and 4 other *.h files could not be found. If anyone could suggest to me how to start fresh, what packages to DL and what commands to run to get a sound supporting kernel, I'd be very happy. I think Debian is pretty cool, and hopefully its users are supportive on this ML.. =) Jason Westervelt [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] .
