At the bottom of that page is a link to a datasheet where you can find a

What a laptop manufacturer does with those two inputs is an open question.

Re: Re: SB1040 X-Fi Xtreme Audio produces no sound on Squeeze

2012-04-19 Thread Jasper Noe

In /proc/asound there are a number of files and directories
that deal with sound, but all of them are 'read only', even
for root. The modules file contains two entries for sound
drivers, both of them being for snd-hda-intel. If I try to run
'modprobe -r snd-hda-intel' I get that it is in use, so maybe
my card 0 is satisfied with that driver. Unloading the driver by
putting an option in alsa-base.conf with an index of -2 and
rebooting turns off the system beeps ( which have always
worked). Since the module seems to be determined by the
entries in /proc/asound/modules, which is apparently
unmodifiable, even by root, I can't test out the other
candidate driver, snd-hda-codec-ca0110

Does anyone have an idea how to proceed?

Three modules:

   snd_hda_codec_ca0110
snd_hda_codec_atihdmi
snd_hda_intel

snd_hda_intel is needed for -both- cards.

( there are many different cards that all go under this flag, that is
what makes it so confusing. )

So you should put the option for the ati module in alsa-base.conf .

Hope you will get it to work !

Re: SB1040 X-Fi Xtreme Audio produces no sound on Squeeze

2012-04-17 Thread Jasper Noe

I am running Squeeze (Linux 2.6.32-5-amd64)
on a Dell XPS8300 with a Sound Blaster SB1040 X-Fi
Xtreme Audio card that produces no sound.

//

'speaker-test -t sine -f 440 -c 2' produces no sound:

speaker-test 1.0.23

Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
Sine wave rate is 440.Hz
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1018:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open
slave
Playback open error: -2,No such file or directory

//

'aplay -l' produces:

 List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices

HDMI]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: Generic_1 [HD-Audio Generic], device 0: CA0110 Analog

card 1: Generic_1 [HD-Audio Generic], device 1: CA0110 Digital
[CA0110 Digital]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

///

Your problem is that you have two sound-devices.
They are numbered 0 and 1

The speaker-test should work if you add

-D hw:1,0

to the options. ( use device 1, subdevice 0 )

To permanently change the order of the 'cards' there is this quote from

http://wiki.debian.org/ALSA :

1. Force the cards to load in a different order. I chose this route, and
added the following to my /etc/modprobe.d/sound:

  options snd-trident index=0
  options snd-usb-audio index=1
This forces my Trident card to be the default (card 0) and my USB
microphone to be card 1.

In your case the modules have different names:

   snd_hda_codec_ca0110 5280 1
snd_hda_codec_atihdmi 2251 1

Also, I think that the name of the file should end in .conf: sound.conf .

If that succeeds your original speaker-test should work.

Re: Re: Driver for (E)ISA Soundcard with YMF719E-S 9749 ZAGA chip

Hi, ( not sure at all if this is going to help )

Look at this:
{ from:
http://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/sound/alsa/ALSAConfiguration.txt
}

{
  Module snd-opl3sa2
  --

Module for Yamaha OPL3-SA2/SA3 sound cards.

isapnp - ISA PnP detection - 0 = disable, 1 = enable (default)

with isapnp=0, the following options are available:

port- control port # for OPL3-SA chip (0x370)
sb_port - SB port # for OPL3-SA chip (0x220,0x240)
wss_port- WSS port # for OPL3-SA chip (0x530,0xe80,0xf40,0x604)
midi_port - port # for MPU-401 UART (0x300,0x330), -1 = disable
fm_port - FM port # for OPL3-SA chip (0x388), -1 = disable
irq - IRQ # for OPL3-SA chip (5,7,9,10)
dma1- first DMA # for Yamaha OPL3-SA chip (0,1,3)
dma2- second DMA # for Yamaha OPL3-SA chip (0,1,3), -1 = disable

This module supports multiple cards and ISA PnP. It does not support
autoprobe (if ISA PnP is not used) thus all ports must be specified!!!

The power-management is supported.

}---

You can make a file in /etc/modprobe.d/ with a name like opl.conf ( the
name does not matter, but it must end in .conf )

in it:

options opl3sa2 isapnp=0 port=... etc.

Again, not sure, just trying, I do not have a card like that myself.
Look in dmesg to see what is happening
Look in /proc/interrupts to see if the card is 'alive', by the number of
irq's changing.

Maybe 'inotify' is what you want.

From the description of inotify-tools:

Description: command-line programs providing a simple interface to inotify
inotify-tools is a set of command-line programs for Linux providing a
simple interface to inotify. These programs can be used to monitor and
act upon filesystem events. inotify-tools consists of two utilities:
  .
inotifywait simply blocks for inotify events, making it appropriate

  .
inotifywatch collects filesystem usage statistics and outputs counts

As you can see from the lsmod output, usb_wwan is required by option.

I was a bit stupid there. ( I have linux-sources installed and was
looking into these files. )

I suggest that you go back to the beginning, probably a clean, fresh
install of
Squeeze, stick the modem in and see what happens. Or a live cd, or, ..

So I've done that now (fresh squeeze install on my netbook). It's just
like in the Ubuntu live system: the modem is being recognized and
usb-modeswitched out of the box (some of the times), configuring the
country/provider makes it work, but same story: (1) half the times I
plug in the modem, it won't work at all (modeswitching works and it
shows up in the nm menu, but choosing 'activate' just spins for a
couple seconds but does nothing); (2) if (1) worked, then just as with
my hand hacked older Debian setup, after 20 seconds it will loose
connection about in half of the cases.

BTW lately I've cared to observe the exact moment when it 'crashes'.
It is 20 seconds after connection initiation and really exactly when
it switches from U (umts) to H (HSPA).

So this must be your problem.

I do not know how to help here.

( I see you have another answer that may help )

snip

The second stage is the loading of the proper module which makes the device
accessible. ( presence of /dev/ttyUSB* )

Now we can 'talk' to this thing. It works like an old fashioned
telephoneline-modem with 'AT-' commands, we can tell it to 'dial',
disconnect, scan for available networks, measure signalstrength etc.
One might use 'minicom' to play with it.

Yeah I know, I used those a bit in the old 56k telephone modem times.
But I haven't really tried to find a command list for 3G modems.

I have something here:
http://rjnoe.home.xs4all.nl/0/linux/3g/at-commands/

(Also, I'm not sure what to do: how would I bring ppp up in such a
manual scenario, i.e. from minicom? Also, in the old times, once ppp
is up, the computer normally wouldn't send AT commands to the modem,
except to interrupt ppp stream to bring it down. Since nowadays modems
need to transmit state changes like the change from UMTS to HSPA, I
wonder how that happens. In any case, I've got no idea what to look
out for, and also, even if I knew to pinpoint it down to a particular
feature, I'd have to observe what nm is doing, too, to know what else
to try.)

It has multiple entries in /dev : /dev/ttyUSB0 , /dev/ttyUSB1 ,
/dev/ttyUSB2 . One of them is for 'control'.

Or use 'chat', which is part of the package 'ppp', to write scripts that
manipulate the modem.

How do you connect, using nm or something else?

I avoid nm like the plague, but that said, if it is ready it might be
beautiful. I prefer low-level tools.

Yeah I tried to go with the low-level tools too, at first, then after
being unsuccessful gave in and went with nm. (I might try to find the
mails I sent during that time; after unsuccessfully trying ppp, I also
tried to go that option (iirc) route (the one that supercedes ppp),
w/o success either.)

I don't get that, 'option' is the driver, ppp or whatever else ( NM,
wvdial ) will rely on it. Unless you replace 'option' with 'usbserial'
which, I think, is a mistake.

Like wvdial. Run 'wvdialconf' -if- the modem is accessible. And then tweak
/etc/wvdial.conf .

I didn't try wvdial. Hm, I'll have to surf around to figure out how to tweak it.

Christian.

Sometime ago I wrote some scripts, playing with a 'hso' modem. They are
here: http://rjnoe.home.xs4all.nl/0/linux/3g/

I think you can replace 'hso' with 'usb' in some places.

I think I'm only removing the modules so they can be reloaded
afterwards, i.e. to reset their state. At least I think it worked
equally both with reloading option afterwards and without.

Now, option is actually loaded when I connect; and, interestingly it's

The module is loaded when you insert the modem

not at the top of lsmod output, and, as I realize now, my own
initialization scripts are not even called anymore as it seems. I'm
quite confused; on 2011-03-20
/lib/udev/rules.d/40-usb_modeswitch.rules was changed to a version
that doesn't call my hook. I don't have any record that I did this
myself, and don't remember anything about it, I can only conclude that
some Debian package upgrade did it. Sigh. (Ok I know that /lib isn't
/etc, but then why are those files in /lib? Or do /etc/udev/ files
override those in /lib/udev?)

It seems the option module is actually being used by network manager
(directly or indirectly), since lsmod shows its use count going up to
2 when I'm connecting, and dropping back to 0 when I unplug the stick.

option 12918 2
usb_wwan6147 1 option
usbserial 21120 7 option,usb_wwan

I've just booted from a current Ubuntu live image. The exact same
thing happens once it connects: 20 seconds after connection is up it
is being dropped again. (This happened 2 times.) The difference to my
Debian setup is that about 4 further times I tried to up the
connection, it didn't even enter up state; network manager would just
show connected, but the stick would still blink its LED instead of
going to light it up constantly as it would when connected, then a
couple seconds later network manager would say disconnected; after
that no connection attempt succeeds, I unplug+replug the stick to try
again. So it's just worse...

In Squeeze usbmodeswitch is standard.

Yes, but it didn't work reliably in Ubuntu back when I tried a year
ago, and not at all in Squeeze (testing back then), which led me to
write my own switching scripts.

When I tried it on the newer Ubuntu today, watching syslog and nm
popup messages, it seems usbmode switching is reliable (and fast, in
~2 seconds), but as mentioned it then fails to connect at all in the
majority of cases. Actually I think that's exactly what happened a
year ago, and I probably just mis-concluded that usb mode switching
wasn't reliable on Ubuntu, where in fact the switching itself seems to
work fine, but somehow in about 2/3 of cases leaves it in a state that
doesn't allow it to connect.

The modeswitching is just the first stage, a very annoying hurdle, it
has nothing to do with connecting. ( but indeed, if it does not work it
won't allow you to connect although that sounds confused to me. )

The second stage is the loading of the proper module which makes the
device accessible. ( presence of /dev/ttyUSB* )

Maybe you are searching for another key:

So, that's what I did:

$ /usr/sbin/chat -E -s -V -f /tmp/qq /dev/ttyUSB0/dev/ttyUSB0
Failed

in /tmp/qq I have:
atd*#06#

Using the script in my previous mail you should be able to do

modem_cmd atd*#06#

In your example you miss a space before the ,
and your /tmp/qq should look like

 atd*#06#
OK

From man chat: A script consists of one or more expect-send pairs
of strings, separated by spaces

So it reads as expect nothing, send string, expect OK, send nothing

The idea of the script is to be able to send -any- command.

FYI, this is a copy of the README that comes with Esound in Etch, it's
date on my computer is june 2005 :

Esound is an audio mixing server that allows multiple
applications to output sound to the same audio device.
Development on Esound stopped several years ago, in the
hope that someone would write a replacement. Esound is
seriously lacking in features required for a modern
desktop environment, particularly for multi-channel
audio and audio/video synchronization. However, it is
part of the GNOME platform (for a little while longer),
so we slavishly continue to maintain it.

Bugs should be reported at http://bugzilla.gnome.org.
It's unlikely that they'll be fixed unless they're
regressions from recent versions or accompanied by
patches.

Compiling a newer module on an older kernel. Possible, limitations ?

2008-09-30 Thread Jasper
Hello list, I frequent a forum that deals with the Acer Aspire One, a
mini-laptop that is sold with Linpus Linux installed, a specialised
distribution based on Fedora.

Now there are many brand new Linux users who want their 3G highspeed
wireless usb dongles to work. In many cases that is possible, but there
are also cases where a module needs to be compiled or even a kernel
upgraded. But these new users are not ready to do that.

Afaik it is possible to compile modules for one machine on another
machine, with the source for the target-kernel available. Then we can
say: put this module in /lib/modules/..etc.. and run depmod

Now my question is: what happens if I take the source of a module that
is part of the latest kernel ( say 2.6.26-rc5 ) and compile that with
the source of the target-kernel ( 2.6.23.9 ).

Is that possible, good, wrong or what ?

I ask, because I cannot test it and want to be sure I do the right
thing.

Thanks, --Jasper.

I just installed Etch Testing using the Netinst CD. Upon bootup, the

Linux From Scratch on the same machine, I knew the quick fix is to do
(Alt) + (Ctrl) + (-) . That seems to change (for the moment) the
resolution/refresh rate (but with a HUGE GDM login dialog box). Then I
log in, the image is clear, with no vibration at (my) default 1024 x

graphics built into the main system board, and an off-brand S VGA monitor.

Obviously, this is annoying, but here's what I really worry about: the
computer is running while I'm away (maybe all day), and an all too
frequent temporary electrical power outage occurs. When the power comes
back on, the computer dutifully reboots, stalling at the GDM log in
point. It then spends hours frying the monitor and/or graphics card . .

Is there a solution? I'd hate to go back to using another distribution,
 if I don't have to.

Could it be that the monitor is 'non-ddc' ?

Etch-install, monitor says: no support (solved)

2006-12-21 Thread jasper
Hello List.

Two days ago I started a floppy-net-install of Etch.
All went well exept that the lcd-monitor only showed no support.
Apparently X itself started up fine.

Ctrl-Alt-F1 brought me in a console where I could peek in
/etc/X11/xorg.conf and /var/log/Xorg.0.log.
After a long time I found out that the problem was that this monitor does
not support DDC ( = Display Data Channel ).

Repeatedly did dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, where there is an
opportunity to unselect DDC. But it still did not work.

Finally this solved it: in xorg.conf, section Device, add:

Option NoDDC true

After that I could restart X with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace and it came up
instantly in the desired resolution.

Hope this helps somebody.

When to add extra memory to a server

2004-06-18 Thread Jasper Metselaar
Hi!

I have a Debian server running (currently with 256MB RAM) and recently
it has slowed down quite a lot and it even hung once. I wondered if it
is needed to add some extra RAM, but I am not sure how to determine if
this is actually the problem.I tried to look with top and free and the last day about
1MB swap has
been in use. Would adding memory increase the performance of the
server?
Thanks in advance for pointing me into the right direction.

Kind regards,
Jasper Metselaar

First off, this _is_ a standard that's specifically mentioned in

Well, the list policies metion a wrapping of 80 characters or less,
my wrapping was at 76 so I was well within the guidelines. But for

My fave backup method is using Star and rsync, and backing up to
another hard drive. It's fast and easy, and hard drives are so
cheap you can have all the redundancy you want for not a lot of
 money.
If you're thinking of creating something like a Norton Ghost image, I
don't know if there is a Linux equivalent.

I just found partimage (http://www.partimage.org). I think I'll give
that one a try. I want to be able to do a full system restore in a few
minutes, so this might suit my needs. Therefore I was looking for a
disk dump utility. For normal/regular backup I use a tar script (something similar to
the
script of Karsten).

Wiesz co właśnie tak mam zrobione lecz. Dokładnie to wpisałem tak:
ip addr add 80.55.77.6 dev eth0
^^ patrz [1]
 iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o eth0 192.168.0.6 -j SNAT 80.55.77.6
iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -d 0/0 -s 192.168.0.6 \
-j SNAT --to 80.55.77.6

 iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth1 80.55.77.6 -j DNAT 192.168.0.6

iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth0 -d 80.55.77.6 \
-j DNAT --to 192.168.0.6

Zatem wystarczy Ci przekierowanie portu.
iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth0 -d 80.55.77.6 --dport xyz \
-j DNAT --to 192.168.0.6:2050

no i oczywiście komunikacja w drugą stronę, którą zapewnia Ci regułka

apt-get install kernel-image-2.x.y
albo:
apt-get install -b kernel-source-2.x.y
skompilowane to i to...

smbfs - woody - problemy ?

i jeszcze jedno pytanie do Marka Berkana:
czy musiałeś zacytować cały post Marcina, żeby dopisać +1 i podpis?

i mały cytacik:
:znanej firmy programistycznej... . W takich przypadkach nalezy

:moich czasow powszechcnie przestrzegana, w kregu mlodych internautow w

:coz, filtrow
