Cannot find Mouse
Hello. I installed debian Potato on a K6-266 box with 64m memory and am having minor technical difficulties with the mouse. I did apt-get install Gnome, used tasksel to install all the x stuff, and did xf86config but when I try to start the x-server, it crashes and tells me that it can't find the mouse. Running gpm I can see the mouse cursor, so I know it works, but as I said, I cannot get it to work with X. I ran XF86Setup, but cannot get the mouse to work no matter which protocol I try. When I first installed X it told me there was no /dev/mouse directory, so I created one. From then on things got worse. Where can I look for documentation? I would be happy to read about it and then try to ask more intelligent questions. Another question: Apt-get can do myriad things. I see references to many different commands on this reflector, and would like to read about it's capabilities and maybe get a complete command list/description. Does anyone know of a nice document I can print? Regards, Jim Darrough
Held Back
What does it mean when you run apt-get install, download several files, and then during the install, some of the files are listed as held back? Thanks, Jim Darrough
Network Printing with Progeny/Debian
Greetings! I am the proud owner of a nice new Progeny system but, since I cannot seem to locate anything on their website concerning an email reflector, I thought I would ask here. Please, as a favor, please redirect flames to dev=NULL. I have an HP OfficeJet 630 hooked up to the debian box (An Athlon 650 with 128 meg of memory, 30g ATA-100 Maxtor HD, VooDoo3 PCI, etc.). I installed samba and it seems to be running ok, but others on my network cannot add the printer onto their windows boxes. When I try to access the progeny box, it asks me for a password, and I cannot get past that. I have made sure that the Win98 box that I am trying to give access has an account on the Debian box, but that does not help. Any clues? I think it may be a samba issue but am not sure. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Jim Darrough
Want to set up Dual Boot (sort of)
Hello. I have an Athlon 650 with 128M of memory, Voodoo 3 PCI and a Viewsonic E771 monitor. I would like to add an additional 30g hard drive and set it up as a Debian-only drive, booting from a floppy. Unfortunately I still require Windows on this machine, but want to experiment with Debian without modifying my Windows partitions/drives. The machine will have three hard drives and a Memorex 2x CDRW drive (I'd like to have another CDR drive, but no ide capability left if I add the new hard drive). Can some kind soul suggest how I can do this? The hard drive on which I wish to install Debian will be /dev/hdc, I believe. Once I have had time to really learn about Debian and running windows apps in Linux, I may switch over completely. Thanks, Jim Darrough
RE: MBR Problem
If your drive has more than 1024 cylinders, that can cause a problem as well. If it is, you might try repartitioning it into two partitions, then install potato on the first partition. Making sure of course that the first partition ends at cylinder 1023. Also, if you have SCSI drives, sometimes you need to specify linear mode, which you can read about in the SCSI-Howto (since I can't remember where the command goes (-; ). Good luck! Question about Apt-???
Is there a concise list of apt-??? commands I can access? And for tasksel? I am intrigued by this functionality. I will stay with Debian and try to learn it. Jim Darrough, ARS KI7AY [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.ki7ay.com
Minor Technical Difficulties
Greetings! I recently set up a debian box using the following equipment. I am experiencing a SCSI problem which I believe to be hardware-related, but I remember reading something about SCSI timeouts and wonder if someone can help me. What happens is the SCSI bus is reset, then the drive shuts down. In the meantime I get screens full of i/o error messages. Soon, the drive starts up again, but Debian has placed the system in read-only mode, and I have to reboot. The other problem I have is that the system starts up in graphical login mode, and I don't know where the switch is to turn it back to text. The only reason I installed X at all was so I could use fetchmailconf. Lastly, now that I have X installed, I would like to install the driver for the S-3 Virge card. Is there a facility like APT-GET that I can use to fetch and install the driver? Here's a summary of my system: P-200MMX on P5STE motherboard with 128M PC-66 DIMMs Buslogic BT-946 PCI-based SCSI controller HP 2.13GB #A2 SCSI drive S-3 Virge Video Card with 2MB (per SuperProbe) Realtek 10/100 PCI Network Adaptor Sincerely, Jim Darrough Jim Darrough, ARS KI7AY [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.ki7ay.com
