MSS/WSS Recording?
I've been trying for a long long time to record with my CS4231 MSS/WSS sound card. My BIOS says that WSS Capture DMA is 1. Play is 0. On boot, I get this message. MSS audio codec (CS4231) at 0x534 irq 11 dma 0,0 I assume it should read: MSS audio codec (CS4231) at 0x534 irq 11 dma 0,1 There's only one entry for MSS DMA though. How can I fix this? joe
Sound Card, etc.
Okay, first of all, I posted a message a few weeks ago about noise and lack of mixer control... It turned out that some mixers (as compiled) don't work well with some MSS/WSS sound cards because of some weird settings (like on my card (a CS4231), line1 is my CD). I fiddled with the sources of xmix and asmixer and I was able to get them to work nicely. Turned out the noise was due to the mic being cranked up to max. :) BTW, I found that gmix works fine as is in gnome-media. Anyway, I was looking through the /usr/src/linux/drivers/sound/Readme.cards. At one point, it says that not all cards can use SB and WSS at the same time. Mine apparently can (I used to have SB support compiled in). My question is, why would I want to have support for WSS *and* SB compiled in? One more thing, what do the 'Low Level Drivers' and 'ACM (?) mixer' options mean/do? Thanks, joe -- Unsubscribe? mail -s unsubscribe [EMAIL PROTECTED] /dev/null
Sound Card
Just a quick question... I have a plug play soundcard (sb clone). Right now I have the kernel using it as WSS. The sound often cracks, and I can only control DSP Mic volume with mixers. Is this a problem with WSS, or could it be a problem with my isapnp.conf file? I just want to know before I spend 8 hours trying to fix it. :) BTW, I'm pretty sure the brand is Crystal, but that's all I remember. joe pgpzpN4sUuTYf.pgp Description: PGP signature
xdm3d_xpm
Has anyone been able to compile xdm3d_xpm? I get this error when I try to compile: server.c: In function `_SysErrorMsg': server.c:71: conflicting types for `sys_errlist' /usr/include/stdio.h:221: previous declaration of `sys_errlist' make: *** [server.o] Error 1 I've tried installing the rpm version (using alien), but when I try to start xdm, it coredumps. I've tried using strace to find out what is wrong, but I haven't had any luck. Would I be able to compile if I install libc5-altdev and altgcc or something? I'm quite lost. joe pgpddw5XzLZEk.pgp Description: PGP signature

Sound Card, MSS
Hi. First off, thanks for all the help from this list. I just got a new computer, and it is running beautifully. I've recieved more help from this list (and the newsgroups) then I've ever recieved from any tech support line. Okay, almost beautifully. When I got the computer, I took the sound card that came with it out (along with the worthless WinModem) and replaced it with a SB16. I put in all the DMA IRQ junk, recompiled, etc. Didn't work. I finally got fed up and put the other sound card back in (Which is a Crystal sound card). Lo and behold, it worked with the settings I had put for the SB16. Kernel wouldn't compile when I tried to specify Crystal as the sound card. Unfortunately, it only plays 8 bit and I can't get CD audio. So, I tried turning on MSS. That actually worked. CD played, and it played 16 bit sound. Unfortunately, it was noisy as hell. Constant loud static; and I couldn't fix the volume (or anything at all except DSP volume) with asmixer or xmix. Any ideas? Alternately, any idea why I couldn't get the SB16 to work? Should I have had MSS on while it was in? Would isapnp help with the Crystal? Or a 2.1.x kernel? This is all very wierd, but at least I feel like I'm making some progress. :) Another thing, even if I can get the SB16 to work, I may have problems with cd audio. The cord goes from the cd to the motherboard. Then a cord goes from the motherboard to the sound card, which has a cord that went to the WinModem. Problem is, I *could* plug the cord from the cd to motherboard into the sound card, but it is jammed way in the corner, and is nearly impossible to get out. Anyway, specs on my machine. 586, 200Mhz, 32MB RAM, kernel 2.0.30. Hewlett Packard, if that helps. The Crystal sound card is a piece of hardware which demonstrates my ignorance. It looks like an ISA card, but it has no connectors. It plugs into the motherboard via data cord. Looks silly, but it works. Thanks for any and all help. joe pgpZLK8Y8DKd2.pgp Description: PGP signature
dpkg errors
I've been getting this message everytime I install something with dpkg: perl: warning: Setting locale failed. perl: warning: Please check that your locale settings: LC_ALL = (unset), LANG = us are supported and installed on your system. perl: warning: Falling back to the standard locale (C). This is a bit annoying, but doesn't seem to affect installs. How can I get rid of this message? thanks, joe pgpRN9W0KNRg0.pgp Description: PGP signature
Afterstep
This is a very minor problem, but I got a nice new computer. I've got afterstep 1.0-4 running. The Afterstep icon doesn't appear in the top icon. Here's the relevent section of my .steprc: *Wharf AfterStep AFstep.xpm Folder Any ideas? thanks, joe pgpORg6q3tKd2.pgp Description: PGP signature
Re: Afterstep
On Jul 6, dpk wrote I had this problem also I suggest: 1. make sure that the icon exists in one of the directories set in your PixmapPath, which is set in your .steprc 2. also make sure there are no errors in your .steprc, you can view the errors by wixh xconsole. I have xconsole start up in my .xinitrc Yeah, the file is in the pix path. I tried sub'ing other icons that do work, and no luck. No luck with xconsole either. joe pgpIe5ntnISMd.pgp Description: PGP signature

Well, I fixed the little problem with the icon. Once I installed procps and xproc, the afterstep icon appeared. joe pgpGYZwPBRIyP.pgp Description: PGP signature
