Logging question / PPP session termination problem

1998-01-14 Thread John M. Rulnick
Briefly:

Syslogd goes wild when PPP connections terminate,
ppp_dev_stats called appears ad infinitum in logs. Help?

Details:

A person connects to my Debian machine via modem, using PPP. When
they kill PPP to disconnect, system messages start being generated at
a rapid rate. This message gets sent once per minute to the console
(and xterms):

Message from [EMAIL PROTECTED] at Wed Jan 14 15:02:09 1998 ...
  machinename

Also, /var/log/messages fills up with:

  Jan 14 15:04:07 beaver 6Jan 14 15:04:07 kernel: v_stats called6
  ppp_dev_stats called6ppp_dev_stats called6ppp_dev_stats ca...

etc. Any idea why this happens? or how to stop it?

This is on a Debian 1.3 system with 2.0.32 kernel.

Emails direct to me will be appreciated; I'll summarize to the list as
appropriate.

Thanks.

John

Re: emacs ispell -- request for bug confirmation

1997-06-24 Thread John M. Rulnick
I'd appreciate if someone could help confirm/deny two possible bugs.
Regarding emacs and ispell (and iamerican) for Debian 1.3:

- if iamerican is not installed, using ispell under emacs incorrectly
yields an error message indicating that 'ispell -v' does not output
it's version line (this appears to be a bug in ispell.el, but I'd like
to get an independent confirmation before submitting a bug report);

- on a clean Debian 1.3 install, 'dpkg -i ispell_3.1.20-0.1.deb'
followed by 'dpkg -i iamerican_3.1.20-0.1.deb' yields a failed
iamerican installation:

  Setting up iamerican (3.1.20-0.1) ...
Please wait while I search for ispell dictionaries...
There is only one installed dictionary - american.
Making american the default ispell dictionary...update-alternatives:
  unable to install /etc/alternatives/ispell-dictionary.hash.dpkg-tmp as
  /etc/alternatives/ispell-dictionary.hash
  dpkg: error processing iamerican (--install):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 2
  Errors were encountered while processing:
   iamerican

This appears to be a problem with the postinst script (using
update-alternatives). Again, I'd appreciate independent confirmation
before I submit any kind of bug report.

Thank you.

1997-04-13 Thread John M. Rulnick
Apologies if this is already known: If one installs the new mgetty

except the old mgetty seems to install a cron job for faxrunq by

Re: turning off computer

1997-03-06 Thread John M. Rulnick
   Date: Wed, 5 Mar 1997 18:58:20 -0500 (EST)
From: I Brake for Moths [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Is there a way for a user without root priveleges to cleanly
unmount the root file system and shutdown the computer?

Yes, they just need to log in and give the three fingered salute,
after you give them permission. Here's what you need to know (mostly
from 'man shutdown'):

Shutdown can be called from init(8) when the magic keys
CTRL-ALT-DEL are pressed, by creating an appropriate entry in
/etc/inittab (already done for you on most debian systems). To
prevent this, shutdown can check to see if an authorized user
is logged in on a virtual console (not an X session, mind
you). If shutdown is called from init, it checks to see if the
file /etc/shutdown.allow is present. It then compares the
login names in that file with users logged in on a virtual
console (from /var/run/utmp). Only if one of those authorized
users or root is logged in, it will proceed. Otherwise it will
   write the message

shutdown: no authorized users logged in

to the (physical) system console. The format of /etc/shut-
down.allow is one user name per line. Empty lines and com- ment
lines (prefixed by a #) are allowed. Currently there is a limit
of 32 users in this file.

I hope this helps. Happy shutdowning.

Is it possible to hook 3 or more PC's together using their serial

   get such cables?

Yes. You will need two (or more) null-modem serial cables (sometimes
sold as LapLink cables) from JDR Microdevices, Radio Shack, or any
of a zillion other places; and you'll want to read the PPP-HOWTO,
which can be found on the Web or in your /usr/docs/HOWTO directory
after installing the appropriate packages.

Re: network route disappearing: http calls = culprit?

1996-12-21 Thread John M. Rulnick
Well, the bizarre ordeal of the disappearing network route appears to
be over. It appears the problem has been found...in hardware. Call
it a particularly ugly case of the cheap NE2000 clone problem.
Three identical brand new cards failed at semi-random times, but a
fourth one, of a different manufacturer, has not produced this
behavior after about 36 hours of testing.

And to celebrate my newfound success with debian networking, I've
thrown my hat into the debian logo ring. Please check out:

network route disappearing: http calls = culprit?

1996-12-18 Thread John M. Rulnick
Could anyone with a working ethernet connection send me a tarball of
their debian networking setup files (e.g., by executing the
following -- ready to cut and paste!):

 tar cvf - /etc/init.d /etc/networks /etc/host* /etc/resolv.conf \
/etc/gateways | gzip -9 | uuencode net.tgz net.u
 mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] net.u

or could someone with networking experience send me a note? I would
really appreciate it. I posted a couple of weeks ago about randomly
losing my static network routes (and hence all networking
functionality). Then I thought I fixed it by disabling 'routed'.
Well that didn't actually fix it. So I've continued looking for
clues. And I found what's causing the network route crash, but I
haven't ANY clue why. Get this:

My routes disappear when I use netscape (or lynx) to reach a
  distant URL.

I'm not making this up. What the hell is wrong? I click on a link
and *bang* I lose my routes (and the browser freezes).

I would be extremely appreciative if someone could lend a hand
resolving this troubling (and crippling) problem. Thank you.

1996-12-15 Thread John M. Rulnick
Would some kind soul be willing to offer suggestions re. an nfs

(especially when copying a long list of files using 'git') I get
error, server not responding, still trying. The man page on the

   Date: 09 Dec 1996 16:51:19 -0500

I'm using the S3 X server and the display doesn't map quite right.
It seems to be off by a small number of pixels (leaving a slim
vertical bar across the far right of the display). This is
sporadic behavior, sometimes it snaps into proper alignment and
   sometimes it snaps out.

Is this a known bug? Is there a fix?

Dear Norman,

At http://www.xfree86.org/FAQ/index.html you'll find:

Q.C1- The mouse cursor doesn't display in the right position

If the cursor appears to be horizontally offset by several pixels, it
is probably due to the same problems that cause the display to be
wrapped around. See item D1 below.

Q.D1- Part of the Displayed Image is Wrapping-around or is Duplicated
on the Other Side of the Screen

For Diamond Stealth Video VRAM: if the server is not recognizing your
card as a Diamond card, add this line to your XF86Config:

Option Diamond

If the above does not work or you don't have a Diamond card, try
running the xvidtune program and adjusting various settings. In
particular, if you have a recent S3 based card, adjust the extra
S3-specific settings at the bottom.

Good luck,

John

concerning a serial cable link, the other on an ethernet:

(1) I'm accessing an nfs mounted drive on my desktop from my notebook
