I'm coming into this discussion rather late, so apologies if my
suggestion has been tried and/or rejected already.

I found that putting the line:

BrowsePoll 192.168.0.2:631

into the cupsd.conf file made the machine, either Mac or Linux, able to
see all printers on the machine 192.168.0.2. The cupsd.conf file for
the machine with the printer connected needs:

BrowseAllow From 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0

I too was frustrated to find that Mac's fancy gui front-end to
everything didn't seem to have any way of setting this, or even any
suggestion of 'proper' way to use printers on a UNIX network.

Hope this helps,

Joe

I don't know the answer to your question, but you could get Lilypond
via lilypond's own page:

(which, incidentally, just directs you to the sid and etch repositories
on ftp.debian.org). You need to get 3 files: lilypond for your
architecture, lilypond-data and lilypond-doc. If you need them for
Sarge, I made a backport some time ago which I may be able to dig out
if you want, although you are probably better off compiling it again
yourself as they are now a bit dated.

You are asking a Debian mailing list, so do not be surprised if all the
replies say use Debian.

DON'T use Fedora! It is OK for desktops, but it is permanently under
development and so (in my opinion) it should not be used on a server.
If you are considering Redhat but don't want to pay the licence fees,
have a look at CentOS (www.centos.org), which is Redhat Enterprise
recompiled and repackaged with all the copyright material removed.

Personally, I would use Debian stable.

This is something I have been trying to find out myself as well. I
have been told that inetd is insecure and not recommended, and I assume
that xinetd solves much of these security problems, although I have no
evidence to back this up (mainly because I have not been able to find
out what these problems are supposed to be (apart from DoS attacks,
which xinted claims to be able to avoid)). The xinetd home page has a
faq that explains some of the main differences:

According to th Ubuntu web page "Ubuntu will always be free of charge".
You can read into this what you will (maybe Redhat said something
similar once, but I doubt it). I, however, am willing to take it at
face value. Also, there is enough momentum behind it already so that
if it did turn commercial I would not be surprised if a new free
distribution started off from the latest available Ubuntu.

> Mandrake has gone commercial, and is now called Mandrivia.
> So there is precedent for such a conversion, and if migration

I could be wrong, but I think that Mandrake was always commercial.
Initially, however, they tried trading with a "we'll give you the
software for free, but please give us some money if you want" policy,
which didn't work too well and nearly resulted in bankrupcy (now well
in the past). Now they appear to have a "we'll give you the previous
version for free, and most of the current one as well but for the full
current one it will cost you" policy, which is a better way of running
a profit making organisation.

For what it's worth, I have tried Ubuntu and I think it looks good,
although I do have one or two issues with it. For example, I know that
most mice are PS/2 these days but the machine I happened to try it on
has an old serial mouse which Ubuntu didn't pick up. Not a good start.

How did you change your username? My first guess is that when you log
in as abc it is looking for a home directory /home/abc and, not being
able to find it, ends the session immediately. Gnome (or maybe gdm or
xdm) is set to bring up a warning if there are unusually short
sessions.

That is the case, gcj-4.0 is a build dependency for Openoffice. Of
course, it is entirely possible that I am missing something vital, as
this is only my second attempt at backporting. Is it possible (and
sensible) to override the build dependency and use the version of gcc
in stable?

Building ant from etch

2005-11-18 Thread Joseph Haig
I am backporting ant-1.6.5 from testing to stable (as part of the
process of attempting to backport openoffice.org) and it seems to have
just hung after showing the following lines:

...
[javadoc] Resolving references in package comments...
  [javadoc] Running doclet...
  [javadoc] Building cross-reference information...
  [javadoc] Writing overview files...
  [javadoc] Writing full tree...

'top' shows (near) zero cpu usage and 'df' shows that no files are
being written to disk. Also, there have been lots of warnings like:

  [javadoc] WARNING: Cannot locate class
java.util.zip.InflaterInputStream referenced in class
org.apache.tools.zip.ZipFile.BoundedInputStream

It has been like this for around half an hour now. Anyone have any
idea what may be up with it?

By default, top shows the percentage usage of all processors combined,
but if you press '1' it will split them, and you should see something
like this near the top of the display:

Cpu0 : 0.3% us, 0.0% sy, 0.0% ni, 99.0% id, 0.0% wa, 0.3% hi,

In the files /etc/cups/cupsd.conf files on the server and workstations
respectively, I have the following lines:

BrowseAllow From 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0

My local network is 192.168.0.0/24 and the machine with the printer

other than editing the config files themselves.

I haven't used it myself, but I am told that valgrind is useful for
this sort of thing.

However, I agree with the other posters who state that the memory is
probably not being leaked but is in fact getting buffered and cached.
How much swap space is being used? Swap should only be used if the
memory has really run out so if it is hardly being used at all then you
do not have a problem.

I can confirm this. I tried this as a test, getting all the necessary
dependencies from testing and unstable but there was at least one
package (libmyspell3c2) which required the removal of another package
from stable (libmyspell3) leading to other things needing upgrading,
such as gnome.

I think the sensible options are:

  1) Get the package directly from OpenOffice.org
  2) Create a backport (and let me have a copy, please ;-) )
  3) Upgrade to sid

to monitor various things, including disk space. There is also mrtg,
which does much the same thing. Both display the results through a web
frontend.

Mind you, now re-reading your question I think you really want to find
specific directories where disk usage has changed rather thank total
disk usagg. I suspect that you could do this with either munin or mrtg
but it would require some hacking of the plugins.

You could use vnc or xdmcp, depending on what you want exactly. vnc
will allow you to leave yourself logged in and then access the session
remotely while xdmcp will allow you to log into a new session of a
remote machine as if it were local. You can set up xdmcp via the gui
login screen and this may be of some use:

I'm not sure about the security implications of this if you are doing
it over the internet. Chapter 3 of this HowTo says "using XDMCP to
display X across Internet is basically a no-no" but maybe you can
tunnel it through SSH. I haven't read it in too much detail, but that
seems to be what it is suggesting.

Hope this helps,

Joe

I was just starting to wonder the same thing. After trying
unsucessfully to install 'testing' from scratch I found that the only
reliable way is to install 'stable' first and then upgrade. More
recently I found, like you, that some packages are not available in
'testing' and I suspect that this is why some of my installs didn't
work. For the sake of getting things to work I have started including
both 'stable' and 'testing' in my /etc/apt/sources.list file, but I'm
sure this isn't the right thing to do.

Yes. 'man cron' says the following:

"When executing commands, any output is mailed to the owner of the
crontab (or to the user named in the MAILTO environment variable
in the crontab if such exists)."

So at the start of your crontab you need a line with something like:

MAILTO=

This being the case, is it possible (and relatively easy) for me to set
up my own private mirror with an extra distribution sitting between
stable and testing into which I can manually move packages from testing

What can you do?

  (1) Cry
  (2) Shoot whoever set and forgot all the passwords
  (3) Reset the BIOS

(3) is probably the most profitable option, and googling for 'reset
bios' found the following:

I haven't tried this myself, but I would guess that it is the only
option.

My guess is that it would not be possible to find how the boot options
are set without the BIOS password, so this could result in a blank disk
and no way to install anything on it.

Some time ago I had a problem with a server that would not power down
automatically so I added the following lines to /etc/init.d/halt to
make it beep continually when it had shut down fully:

while test true
do
  echo -e "\a"
  sleep 1
done

This should come after the 'halt' statement and before the ': exit 0'.

However, if your computer automatically powers down I do not think it
will ever reach the 'echo -e "\a"', which causes the beep.

Hope that helps,

Joe

There is a How To for NIS here:

http://www.linux-nis.org/nis-howto/

Once you have set up an NIS server, debian should automatically set up
any clients for you when you install the 'nis' package.

You will also probably want to have users' home directories available
from all computers, which you can do very easily with NFS. Again, here
is a How To:

http://nfs.sourceforge.net/nfs-howto/

You shouldn't need to install anything extra for this as NFS is fairly
standard.

Hope that helps,

During the install you should have been given the option to select what
tasks the machine is going to perform, out of a list of about 5 or 6
options. The first, if I remember correctly, is 'Desktop', which will
install all you need. If you want to use Opera you will need to
install that afterwards as it is not included in the Debian
distribution.

You should not really need to search through the whole list of
individual packages.

I am by no means an expert, but I believe that your 'best guess' is all
that is needed - it works for me, at least. So in summary, edit
/etc/apt/sources.list, replacing sarge or stable in each line with etch
or testing and then execute the following:

$ apt-get update
$ apt-get dist-upgrade

The start of my sources.list file looks like this:

deb http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ testing main non-free contrib
deb-src http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ testing main non-free contrib

deb http://the.earth.li/debian-secure-testing testing/security-updates
main contrib non-free
deb-src http://the.earth.li/debian-secure-testing
testing/security-updates main contrib non-free

deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib non-free

I'm not sure I really need the last line, but it doesn't seem to do any
harm. I think it is only there because I originally installed sarge
and then upgraded to testing, which didn't have security updates at
that time.

> In addition, is there a written example of adding a package from sid?
>

I don't know about this. My only experience with sid is accidentally
installing it instead of testing, and then finding that nothing worked.

You are right on both counts - any filesystem has some degree of
fragmentation and the feature is specific to the filesystem - but this
is more information than your average newbie really wants, so I stand
by what I said. Any filesystem used by Linux will keep the
fragmentation under control, albeit without eradicating it completely.
Yes, you could probably install Linux on a FAT filesystem but would you
really want to? Likewise, I guess you could install Windows on ext3
(if you were particularly perverse and persistent) but I wouldn't like
to see the result.

I look after (not on my own ;-) ) around 200 servers all running Linux,
some of which have been in constant use for hundreds of days. It is
simply impractical to go round defragging the disks.

Hello Michael. How are things? I see you have moved from the CNC.

If you want an idea of what traffic you are using at a particular

To cut a file into 140 byte pieces (to fit onto floppy disks, for

$ split --bytes=140 INPUT PREFIX

This will take the file INPUT and split it into a collection of files
called PREFIXaa, PREFIXab, etc.

The original poster didn't say where he is, but if he is in England you

If you want something free you can try squidguard (www.squidguard.org),
but I found when I tried it some time ago that there wasn't easy to get
an up to date blacklist, which is essential for what you want. I use
Optenet (optenet.com), which is a commercial package that runs as a
helper application for Squid. One advantage of Optenet for you is that
it is a Spanish company, so the text analyser in Spanish is probably as
well developed as the English.
