It's a good idea to have a short discussion on the

PS/2 Mouse Problem!

2004-05-10 Thread Kaveh Gh

 Hi! (Again)

In /etc/X11/XF86Config-4, the mouse device has been
defined according to the following lines:

Section InputDevice
Identifier Configured Mouse
Driver mouse
Option CorePointer
Option Device /dev/psaux
Option Protocol ImPS/2
Option Emulate3Buttonstrue
Option ZAxisMapping 4 5
EndSection

Section InputDevice
Identifier Generic Mouse
Driver mouse
Option SendCoreEvents true
Option Device/dev/input/mice
Option Protocol ImPS/2
Option Emulate3Buttonstrue
Option ZAxisMapping 4 5
EndSection

As you can see, the mouse protocol that X uses is
ImPS/2. In X environment, mouse works not really fine!
I mean when I move the mouse slowly, it works not bad,
but when I move it fast, it jumps from one side to the
other side of screen, unwanted clicks and undesired
scrolling will be happened :(

I have changed ImPS/2 to PS/2, but no good results
have been got and the mouse behavior becomes really
bad!! Go back to ImPS/2 ; I think that was better!

Please let me know that besides PS/2, ImPS/2,
autoPS/2, which kind of protocol I have to test? Until
now, I have not tested autoPS/2. My mouse is PS/2 with
netscrolling capability. Looking 4 your
recommandations and suggestions.

 Regards,

Re: Need Help

2004-05-10 Thread Kaveh Gh

During the setup phase, when you complete the
initializations, the setup will issue you to reboot
the system. After booting up the debian box(note that
you should have configured the lilo or boot manager in
a proper manner to load the debian for your box) you
should see the base-config program running to
complete the setup. Then follow the instrucitons. When
the setup call you to run the tasksel you will see a
screen loaded with several options, let you choose
which one of tools you want. By selecting X and
desktop environment, you will choose which one of X
managers you want to load by default on boot time
[gdm, xdm, kdm] you can use dselect during the setup
phase of after setup, to select desired X
environments[kde... ]. At any time, you can issue
dselect to choose the corresponding options. Note that
after, setup ,you can not login via gdm ,, by root. If
you like to do so, you should edit gdm.conf and set
the root user login to true.

X start-up failure!!

2004-05-08 Thread Kaveh Gh

 Dear Guys,

My problem with X is that: Whenever I choose
frame-buffer feature in setup phase, although the
xf86config settings are ok, X won't come alive and a
Fatal error related to AddScreen comes on the
output console! Whenever I DO NOT choose the frame
buffer, X comes up and sounds of X-start up are
generated, but with no video output and the screen
becomes black screen! I'm sure that all applets are
running under X. For example by pressing Alt-F1 and
moving through the main menu(in my imagine ;) ) and
pressing enter key, the read/write LED of HDD becomes
red! So, I think the problem is related to my video
Adapter.

My video card is NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 AGP 16MB. In all
other distributions, its detected as nv RIVA TNT2 and
mostly I choose its driver in xf86config as nv . I
had no problem with my video card in other distros.
So, what's the problem?!

Network Adapter Problem!

2004-05-03 Thread Kaveh Gh
Dear All,

According to my previous mail, I had a problem with
my LAN adapter. My problem was inability to link the
corresponding module of my LAN adapter to the kernel
during setup phase. Bob mailed me with too many
complete recommendations! Thanks Bob! ;)

Well first of all let me describe my problem:

 I have a D-link DFE-530TX+ Fast 10/100 Mbps PCI LAN
Adapter. The manufacture sells the adapter with a CD
holds corresponding drivers. The driver used for Linux
is: ¡§RTL8139¡¨ this file is a C++ code.

Bob had told me to try 8139too.o but according to my
experiences with FreeBSD, Slackware, Redhat, and
Mandrake linuxes, all these distributions had detected
my adapter as Via-Rhine III type! I have taken a deep
look again and I became sure that those ones have
detected my adapter as Via-Rhine.

Last night, I had fired up the setup again with bf24
kernel and wanted to follow the instructions
recommended by Dear Bob. There was no 8139too module
for inclusion! Then I¡¦ve tried Linux (default),
Vanilla, and compact ones; All of them had the 8139too
module (Good 4 me) but unable to link it to the
kernel!! When I had selected the module for inclusion,
the setup issued this message:

¡§Please specify any command-line parameters needed
for this module. In most cases, you do not need to
enter any parameter and the default ones work fine.¡¨

And with a field, that was available for me to enter
any needed parameter(s). Without any command-line or
parameter(s), the following results obtained:

¡§../lib/modules/2.2.20-compact/net/8139too.o :
init-module : Device or resource busy.
Hint : insmod errors can be caused by incorrect
module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ
parameters
 ../lib/modules/2.2.20-comact/net/8139too.o : failed.

Installation failed¡K Press ENTER to exit!¡¨

I had tested other modules. I¡¦ve found that for some
of them, the setup assumes some
preset-configuration-settings for IRQ and IO address.
For example, for some of them, before linking, setup
issues:

¡§ IRQ = 9
  IO = 0xdc00
  ¡K. ¡§
And for some of them:

¡§ IRQ = 0
  IO = 0
.. ¡§

Then I had tried entering my desired setting, so in
the available field, I have entered: ¡§ irq=9
io=0xdc00 ¡§ but no good result obtained!! ƒ¼ Again
the error messages appeared with this additional one:
¡§ invalid parm_irq ¡§ .

Now I¡¦m sure that the problem with linking the
8139too.o module to the kernel is caused by IRQ or IO
addresses!! I think If I can resolve this problem,
both ¡§8139too¡¨ (Bob¡¦s recommendation) and
¡§Via-Rhine III¡¨ modules will work fine. Now, I need
your help and I¡¦m looking 4 your recommendations.
