Need some help ???

2005-10-05 Thread Larry Shields

I am in need of some help on not wanting some packages to be removed
when I try using either apt-get install (package name),  or using
Synaptic...They both want to remove alot of packages that I do not want
to do a total of 512...

At one time I had this very same problem, I had mentioned it to one of
my debian user friends, he had told me to edit out the packages in a
certain script,  which did
eliminate this problem, but since that time I have forgotten where it
was located,  or
what it was called...??? He also does not remember at this time...

So might anyone know what I need to do to eliminate the wanting of
synaptic, or apt-get to want to remove a bunch of files...???

Any help on this would be very much appreciated...

Thanks Larry

Error with dpkg...???

2003-02-02 Thread Larry Shields
Not sure if anyone else has had this problem, but here's what I am now
getting when I use synaptic to install a package...
/var/lib/dpkg/status near line 2873 package wine-utils missing version...

According to synaptic of installed packages, I do not have 'wine-utils'
installed, but at one time I know that I did, so it must have been
removed when I install some other package...

Does anyone on the list know how I can correct the problem, so that I
can install wine-utils, or for that matter any other program, for with
this error, I can not install any new packages...

Thanks for any help anyone can offer...

Burning CD Revisited

2003-01-07 Thread Larry Shields
Ok everyone I am back, with a problem on burning a CD...
All though I did finally burn one, but when I looked at the CD it did
not have all of the subdirectorys for which I need...
So with, that I used a new CD, now I have been having one heck of a time
trying to burn another one, using Xcdroaster...

I have made a directory as root, /root/tmp/my_cdrom

I have used Master Tracks tab, choose the master source
/home/wd9esu/jnos, then clicked add, which it put the path in the
Session view...
From that point I used the ISO9660 option tab, these are the ones that
I have selected,
Rock Ridge, Allow 20 character iso-filenames, Do not use deep directory
relocation, Joliet extension, <---I have even tried using un checked,
Allow ISO-files with a starting period...

Under the tab Boot options, I have checked El Torito...So it all so
wants the path for the Boot image & catalog, here is what I think I am
missing, it is the boot image, so how and where can I get the boot image
from the hard drive and if so what is the name used for it...???
Also the /boot/catalog where do I get that from...???

One more thing when I use Calculate size, it says at the end, mkisofs:
Uh Oh, I can't find the boot catalog directory...
I am now hoping that this is what I need, the boot image & the catalog,
so if there is anyone that is using Xcdroaster and has success in using
it please stand up, and let me hear how one needs to set it up once and
for all...

Thanks to everyone who tried last time...

What boot loader are you using ( Lilo, Grub, etc)? If you're using
lilo, you should be able to get a prompt/menu by holding down the shift
key just after the initial system POST. At this point you should be
able to enter something like "linux 1" or "linux single". This should
take you into single user mode and not attempt a starting of X.

Hi Jamin,

I am using GRUB, but upon booting up the system, grub is not show, and
boots up in WINDOZE! not linux...Grub is supposed to be on the HDA1 or
c:drive MBR but with the new computer it is not here...???

Sixth, Has any one swapped out a hard drive, and had this same
problem, if you have could you please let me know how or what you did
to get it to work...???

I've swapped my boot drives between systems before, but never had this
problem. In my experience, if the X config was wrong, it would flash
the screen between a console and an attempted X startup a few times and
then abort the attempted X startups and leave me at a functional
console.

You may have swapped drives, but did the other computer have Linux on it
or WINDOZE!...I could see if one had another computer with Linux on it,
and was setup for using GRUB!, but this computer is totally new...With
the exception of the 120gb HD that I have swapped out from the BAD
computer...

So at this point I am at a loss as to how I can boot up using my system
disk for linux, and get to a prompt...If I could then I would be able to
fix XF86Config-4, and add grub...
As I said, it boots ok, but I end up with a BLANK BLACK screen...I get
no prompt, can not change to any of the consoles etc...

Thanks for alteast trying to help me out here...

Help needed...

2002-12-22 Thread Larry Shields

I am in need of some help, and I will try and explain as to what has
happened here...

First, I had a computer which was working using a 120gb HD running
Debian, the computer then after about 15 min's would shutdown on it's
own...This keeped on happening and I mentioned to the techs where I
bought it that the power supply just might be bad by over heating...So
they sent me a new one, it did the same thing again, bummer...I then
used a 4 inch muffin fan blowing on the board, it would then stay up
running for days...So there was something on the board that was over
heating...They sent me another computer to replace the one that was bad,
I removed the 120gb HD and installed it in the new computer...

Second, now when I bootup in Linux, it boots up just fine to a point,
meaning after the bootup has completed, I then get a BLANK BLACK SCREEN,
with no text etc...

Third, I can not at this point change to any of the console screen, so
by not being able to actually see what is going on, I am not sure if the
system is locked up or what...

Fourth, I think it is because of the XF86Config-4 configuration, which
was setup using a different setup on the bad computer, it now will not
work on the new one...

Fifth, since I still have the bad computer here, I can change out the
HD, put it in the new one , it will then work, but NOT in the brand new
one...???

Sixth, Has any one swapped out a hard drive, and had this same problem,
if you have could you please let me know how or what you did to get it
to work...???

I think it is n my /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 script, but I can not get to it
to try and edit it...
Any help on this issue would be appreciated...

Thanks Larry/WD9ESU

Not sure which kernel version, but if you have #AUTOSAVE at the top of your

take effect for your /dev/ttyS0 etc...Then add the #AUTOSAVE line back in...

I even tried apt-get install ssh-1.2.27, which did not work, then I tried
ssh 1:1.2.3-9, a no-go also...

Wounder if this is the correct use of this URL
deb:http://us.debian.org/debian potato main stable non-us
for it to work, guess I'll try it and see...???

You might think about purchasing a Modem with jumper settings, that way you
can setup your modem to use a different IRQ/IO...Modem Blaster 56II works
just fine, just make sure you open the box to make sure that it does infact
have selectable jumpers for IRQ & IO for Com1, 2, 3, 4...

Good Luck

APT-GET is the GREATEST !!

2000-08-26 Thread Larry Shields
Hi Jaye,

I just wanted to comment on how well the Debian, APT TEAM did on there
package handling utility...It is the slickest program that I have run so
far, and without any glitches I might add...They did a great job I have to
admit...

I ran update, upgrade, which took quite a few hours to upgrade, then I
installed four new packages that I wanted, minicom, joe, apache &
junkbuster, it configured them all without any help from me...

Thought I'd mention this to you, and everyone on the list...

Help STILL! Needed on BocaBoard BB1008

2000-08-25 Thread Larry Shields

 Hello to all,

Well I thought that after I had my serial.conf script configured correctly,
so the BocaBoard would be dected, which it is now seeing, I thought that
maybe since it would not connect to my TNC's "data Controllers" for Packet,
that the problem maybe the baud rate between the computer and the tnc...

So I changed it from 115200 too 9600, yet I still can not connect up to my
data controllers...

Now John N8UR, sent a reply back on the 18th of this month, saying that he
has been using the same board for years, and that it worked like a charm, if
this is true, then John what else did you have to do to get the BocaBoard to
make a connection to your TNC's...I'd like to hear about it if you would
please explain it in more detail...???

At this point, I am in need of help on this, so if anyone can come up with
any ideas, or have a BocaBoard BB1008, that is working, I'd definitely like
to hear from you...

My last resort, if I can not get it to work, then I suppose I will have to
send it back...

Thanks to anyone for help that you maybe able to offer...

Boca Board BB1008..???

2000-08-20 Thread Larry Shields

Hello all,

Just a quick question, has anyone purchased a 'Boca Board BB1008', it is an
8-port serial board, and have you had success in getting it running under
say Debian/Linux 2.2.5 Potato...

If you have I'd appreciate in hearing what is needed for it to work, or if
it will not work...

I have uncommented in the serial.conf script, ttyS16 through ttyS23, and
where it says /dev/ttyS16 set_multiport port1 0x107 0xff match1 0...

Now upon rebooting it does not seem to configure these ports correctly, any
help would be appreicated...

Thanks...

/usr/src/kernel-source2.2.5/drivers/char/serial.c...

So I looked through the entire script, and not one word is mentioned about
BOCA...Only Multiport AST fourport board ...Hu
But yet in the serial.conf script it does mention the Boca BB1008, this is
where one uncomments out the ttyS16 through ttyS23...

I can send you the script if you like, so you can view it for yourself,
maybe you can come up with another idea...???

I sure would like to get the Bocaboard BB1008 working shortly, before I

Journal's survey, seeing that they did not list anything for Debian...When
asked what Linux source do you use, I checked other, and typed in DEBIAN!...

Let them see how many of us are out here that are using Debian, NOT just
what they have Listed...Caldera, Laser5, Mandrake, TurboLinux, Suse, Corel,
Red Hat...

Maybe by doing so, they will have more artical's in there magazine
pretaining to Debian Linux...

Help with TKDESK FIXED!!!

1999-05-01 Thread Larry Shields WD9ESU

Thanks for the replys back concerning the problem that I had with TKDESK not
working correctly...

What I did was point the mouse to the bookshelf and clicked on the RIGHT
mouse button and it brought up some options, where I found File browser,
then I clicked it, and brought up the full TKDESK top, with all of the menus
showing TKDESK, DIRECTORY, COMMAND, BOOKMARK and OPTIONS, with three
columns...
Then I save it as it was, then exited the program and then tried it again,
it came up just picture perfect...

Thanks to those who had replied...

But now for some reason it does everthing in the above except, that the main

Fw: Mitsumi FX001D CD-ROM drv. Need help...

1999-02-28 Thread Larry Shields WD9ESU
This is my second request for HELP! with a FX001D Mitsumi CD-ROM drive,
mabe this time I will catch the right person or users that can help me out
here...

I am hopeing that someone that also has a CD-ROM drive the FX001D can help
me out here, in configuring the cd-rom drive, so that when at bootup it will
be mounted...

If I boot right from the linux floppy disk, when it gets to the point of
mounting my CD-ROM drive I get this:

MCD=0X360,11: init Failed. No mcd device at 0x360 irq 11

But if I let the system boot up using MSDOS, it then loads everything
encluding my cd-rom drive, then once I get the msdos prompt, I insert the
Bootable linux
disk into the floppy drive, and do a soft reboot CTRL-ALT-DEL and then it
boots up using the Linux floppy...

When it gets to the point of loading of the cd-rom drive it then loads in
and shows this:

MCD=0X360,11: Mitsumi Status type and version: 10 D 2 Double Speed CD ROM

Does this mean that when I am asked when installing Debian Modules select
Category for cdrom driversthat when it shows the different types like sony,
etc, and mcd or MCDX, that it is looking for mcd=0x360,11 10 D 2???

With this info how can I have it mounted upon booting up Linux, in the
FSTAB file, meaning the correct way to type it in fro a MCD type CDROM
drive...

I have printed out HOW-TO CDROM and it is listed as this for my CD-ROM
drive...

Loadable module support: YES
Device: /dev/mcd, major 23
Configuration file: mcd.h
Kernel Config option: Standard Mitsumi CDROM Support ?
README file: MCDThis file I have not found

This driver accepts a kernel command line of the form:

mcd=, This I allready know what the I/O and IRQ is
mcd=0x360,11 but it is needing something else for it to work right...

Here is what the cdrom howto mentioned..

Specifying the I/O base address of the card 0x340 and the irq request number
used.
The device file can be created using:
# mknod /dev/mcd b 23 0I have done this and it says that it allready
exists, this is because I booted up from dos, then did an CTRL-ALT-DEL and
then it was mounted upon booting up from my linux boot disk...

I would like any info on how to do it correctly so that when I boot directly
from my bootdisk that the cdrom drive will work...

Also I would like someone to show me the correct way of editing my FSTAB
file using the /dev/mcd since I have tried three different ways and have had
no luck in doing so...

Thanks for any help that you can pass on to me I would appreicate it...

Problems with my HD

1999-02-28 Thread Larry Shields WD9ESU

Hello everyone,

I used Fdisk which showed me this below, and would like to know if someone
can tell me what cause's this type of a problem, and how to eliminate it
from
happening again...

My HD is a Western Digital 6.4gb drive...

/dev/hda: 784 cyls, 255 heads, 63 sectors
units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes

deviceBootBeginstartEndBlocksIDSystem
/dev/hda1 *1117   131323+  6  Dos16-bit>=32M
Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary:
phys = (16,89,63) should be  (16,254,63)

/dev/hda2 *17 17 101 67473083 Linux native
Partition 2 does not end on cylinder boundary:
phys - (101,89,65) should be (100,254,63)

/dev/hda3 101101 114104422+82 Linux Swap
Partition 3 does not end on cylinder boundary:
phys = (113,89,63)  should be  (113,254,63)

This was the same for /dev/hda4, but the rest were shown like this...

/dev/hda5 114 114 369204825683 Linux native
/dev/hda6 369369 6242048256 83 "
/dev/hda7 624624 700610438+83"
/dev/hda8 700700 738305203+83"

Dmesg: Showed this hda: wdc #, 6149mb w/256 cache, chs=784/255/63

In CMOS setup, I do have Normal, LBA, and Large, using LBA and have cmos
auto detect the HD, it comes up with this...

Options Size Cyls Heads Precomp Landzone Sectors Mode
1 (y) 101 13328 15 65535 13327 63Normal
2 101 784 255 0 " 63LBA
3 101666430 65535 "63Large

So I choose option #2

Any comments on the above as to why this has happened would be
appreicated...

Thanks...

Question

1999-02-23 Thread Larry Shields WD9ESU
I have XF86 up and running to a point, I might add, as in root I startx ,
and it brings up the screen with the ICON's at the bottom...Clock, Load,
Xterm, Files, Editor,Xcalc, Xview, Qview, Netscape, Kill, and Desktop...

Now the only ones that work are Xcalc, Xterm and Clock, if I remember
right...

When I click "Files" it doesn't change or do anything, the same wih the
others, am I missing something here...??? I must be for none of them really
work by clicking on these Icons...I know I have to get Netscape so that much
I do know, but the rest I am puzzled as to why they do not work...

I have a Linux Complete Reference put out by Caldera, which I got out of the
library, and it shows pictures of what the Caldera desktop looks like, and
it is very much like Windows 95...One can click on the File menu and it
shows this, change directory, retype directory, close, Infomation, Print,
Open, Remove, Copy, Move, Link and Change Properties...

I have installed XF86 and thought that once it was installed most of the
samething would be like what I have mentioned in the above...

I purchased Debian which came with 7/CD's, and the Debian Linux Users Guide,
which doesn't explain very much in detail... I am all so new to LINUX, as
you can tell, but I would like somone to try and explain to me what I need
to do to get XF86 up and ruuning once I startx, and at the main screen to
have these Icons that are shown to work or what other packages does one have
to install, for it to have the look and feel of say WIN95...

It sure would be nice to be able to open a folder, copy files, create files
etc, instead of having to type every command to do this or that...

Thanks for any help that someone can pass onto me...

me out here, in configuring the cd-rom drive, so that when at bootup it will
be mounted...

It works this way but this is not the correct way of setting it up...

So my device for my cdrom drive is not HDC, the device block is MCD am I
right or wrong...???

With this info how can I have it mounted upon booting up Linux, in the
FSTAB file, meaning the correct way do it...

I have printed out HOW-TO CDROM and it is listed as this for my CD-ROM
drive...

Loadable module support: YES
Device: /dev/mcd, major 23
Configuration file: mcd.h
Kernel Config option: Standard Mitsumi CDROM Support ?
README file: MCDThis file I have not found

This driver accepts a kernel command line of the form:

mcd=, This I allready no what the I/O and IRQ is
mcd=0x360,11...

Specifying the I/O base address of the card 0x340 and the irq request number
used.

The device file can be created using:

# mknod /dev/mcd b 23 0I am not sure or understand what the b 23 and 0
means either...

Now I have not tried the above of mknod as of yet, since it also mentoned to
see file mcd for more information on this driver...Now what else would I
need if anything...??? Reading thru the whole CDROM-HOW TO there was no more
info that I could find on this cd-rom drive...

I am not sure what mknod does, and if by doing just what it says would it
mount automatcially when I boot up, or do I need to put something in the
FSTAB file... If so, what would be the correct info to put into the FSTAB
file...

Thanks for any help that you can pass on to me I would appreicate it...

XF86SETUP Help needed...

1999-02-12 Thread Larry Shields WD9ESU

I know that this question has been asked before, but since I am a new user
of Debian, I need some help on setting yp XF86...

Now I started the XF86Setup prg., and went thru each one of the menus, from
the mouse, keyboard, which I chose 102, instead of the 101 type, then to my
Video card, which is an OAK, and in the list it had OAK Generic, and used
that, the card is a OTI-067/077 model...Then onto the monitor which as a
Horizontal freq., of 30-60khz, the vertical is 50-90hz, and what little info
thats in the manual that the Max resolution is 1024X768...

I have tried different settings 640X480 mode using 8bpp, even 16bpp and
1024x768 settings with SVGA to just plain VGA-16, I've gone thru all and
when I click the done, it then, takes the info that I have provided and
restarts it backup...

Then when I save the configuration, I then am returned to root, from there I
tried many times to startx, and I get this:

xinit: Connection refused (error 111) unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (error 3): Server error...

Is there anyone that maybe able to explain to me what I need to do to get it
up and running correctly, I would appreicate in hearing from anyone
concerning this issue...Since I have tried all of the different settings, I
am at a loss as to what is needed to fix my problem...

Thanks,
