libstdc++.so.2.7.2( glibc) and libstdc++.so.27 (libc5) question

1999-01-25 Thread Marc Fleureck
Hi,

I have an e-mail client arrow which comes in two flavors: one for
libc5 and one for glibc. I have libc5 as well as libc6 installed. Any of
the two arrow-versions complains at startup about either
libstdc++.so.2.7.2 or libstdc++.so.27.

I have libstdc++2.8 and 2.9 installed. Where can I find these old
libraries (2.7) ??

Can't load libc5.so.m when starting XFree 86 (3.3.2)(matrox G200 card)

debian package with alien and unpacked xsuseconfig. Then I ran
xf86config but it dies wirh can't load libc5.so.m (same with startx).

I have mostly SLINK packages and libc6(2.07u). Rest is hamm i
think.

I don't know anything about compatibilty (libc5 -- libc6). Please
point me in the wright direction. Please e-mail. Thanks.

Debian2.0/XFree86 3.3.2.3 on TOSHIBA 4400: X does not start

1998-11-19 Thread Marc Fleureck
Hi,

Installed all relevant packages (xbase, xbase-clients, xlib6, libc6,
and xserver-vga) without errors. When we do:

 startx

It complains:

   X: exec of /usr/bin/X11 failed.

BTW, if you type /usr/bin/X11/X it's the same result. So the X-
server is not a good one ?? I suppose one should know the chipset
in order to get the correct X-server ?? How ??

Error in loading shared libraries (libz.so.1) from xbase_3.3.2.3-2

1998-11-18 Thread Marc Fleureck
Hi,

I try to install X11R6 (xbase_3.3.2.3-2.deb) on Debian2.0 with
following error:

  dpkg -i xfntbase_3.3.2-3.2.deb
mkfontdir: error in loading shared linraries
  libz.so.1: cannot open

Of course libz.so.1 doesn't exist in /usr/X11R6/lib because it's not
part of xbase. Also, just running mkfontdir also gives the same
error. Is it broken ?

I already installed successfully xbase_3.3.2.3-2 + xlib6g_3.3.2.3-2

Question about include files and recompiling kernel

1998-10-30 Thread Marc Fleureck
Hi,
Here's a practical problem I encountered when recompiling 3c59x.c
with kernel source 2.0.34. I followed instructions from Donald
Becker: 1. install source code in /usr/src
2. cd /usr/src/linux; make include/linux/version.h
3. cp 3c59x.c /usr/src/linux/modules
4. gcc -DMODULE -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux/net/inet
-O6 -c 3c59x.c

First, a whole bunch of include files were missing, so I downloaded
kernel-headers-2.0.34. It installs itself in /usr/src/linux-2.0.34.
+ I looked in README of kernel-source and applied the 3 links
from /usr/include/linux/asm-scsi-idontknowanymore.

Anyway, after that gcc reported 1 file autoconf.h was still
missing. So I simply made some link to the right autoconf.h (don't
remember how) and SURPRISE SURPRISE ended up with 3c59x.o
!!

What in God's name happened ?? Can someone explain me how
to *correctly* install include files without having to hack around like
that ? Please mail.

Many thanks in advance,
Regards,
marc

Kernel 2.0.34 for AIC 7890 and 3com cyclone (3C905B)

1998-10-29 Thread Marc Fleureck
Hi,
I run an ASUS P2B-LS motherboard with AIC 7890 SCSI , so I had
to install a special kernel image (2.0.34) from ~doko/aic7xxx.

But I have also a 3com cyclone card (3C905B) which doesn't work.
I recompiled 3c59x.c with kernel-sources-2.0.34, but it still gives
ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff station address. BTW, my PNP OS is disabled.

3com cyclone has been reported to work with kernel 2.0.35. But I
am stuck until AIC7890 will be supported in 2.0.x ?

Does this mean I am locked ? Anyone has a tip or suggestion ?

Please mail me: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Make linux bootable directly to hard disk fails (NT4 installed)

1998-05-12 Thread Marc Fleureck
Hi everybody,

I know maybe this isn't the right group to ask, sorry for that, but
since comp.os.linux.setup doesn't answer . but there is a
small link with this group anyway and maybe somebody has a hint ?

NT4 is already installed on my PC (one big 3Gb Quantum SCSI-disk.)

I am trying to install Debian 1.3 next to NT4. I used the rescue
floppy and partitioning went well (sda1-sda2-sda3 are NTFS, sda4 is
extended and sda5-sda6-sda7 are for Linux). But when I select Make
linux bootable directly to hard disk it errors with the following
message:

Currently it is impossible to boot from the second hard drive !?

There isn't any second hard drive ! It's one big 3G Quantum SCSI !

I am totally stuck here, also tried to switch the bootable partition,
but this also fails - system refuses to boot. Please anybody has an
idea or hint would be very appreciated.

Thanks,

Marc

activate VFS for kernel with module support - how ?

1997-12-31 Thread Marc Fleureck
Hi,

I compiled a new kernel with module-support. It tries to boot and
sais: kernel panic VFS: unable to mount fs

Seems logical. I didn't activate the VFS-module. lsmod doesn't give it
in the list neither. I must load something.o with insmod. But where
can I find that something ? Should it be done manually once or do I
have to put it in some config file ? (/etc/conf.modules ? what does
it do ?)

Missing include file while configuring kernell 2.0.32 ??

1997-12-30 Thread Marc Fleureck
Hi,

I installed the kernel source 2.0.32. I just executed what the
README file tells me to do, but when I start make menuconfig things go
wrong. Why doesn't it find the include files ???

The first thing make does is compiling the
file lxdialog.c, so gcc is invoked by make. lxdialog.c
refers to include files dialog.h and locale.h which contain other
include files such as stdlib.h, string.h etc...

Then make stops saying dialog.h: stdlib.h: no such file etc...

A find reveals string.h in /usr/src/linux/include/asm-i386. But
stdlib.h for instance is not on my disk ?? Very strange !!

addendum to Upgrade Debian. Upgrade install diskettes ?

1997-12-01 Thread Marc Fleureck
Hi,

System: Debian1.3/Kernel2.0.30 (upgraded from Debian1.2/kernel2.0.27)

It seems that every time i boot from an upgraded rescue floppy and
run the network setup, my system doesn't initialize the network card
anymore. It sais: cardmgr: loading failed. The module symbols (from
linux 2.0.30) don't match your linux_2.0.30.

I have to note that the new rescue floppy has kernel-image2.0.29 (not
2.0.30 i have). Is this the cause ?

set up network correctly ?

1997-11-27 Thread Marc Fleureck
Hi,

System: Debian 1.3/kernel2.0.30/3c562-3d Lan+Modem adapter

I have just set up my PCMCIA card without any erros. That is i don't
get any errors at boot time. Card Services 2.9.6 co recognize the
card.

During installation of Debian 1.2/kernel 2.0.27 i have setup the network
(ip-addresses, gateways, masks, etc...). But now /etc/hosts
seems to be empty; /etc/networks contains the right address.;ifconfig
eth0 does give all zeros, yet ping hostname is OK, but ping
ip-address not (unreachable); netstat -r gives no gateway (except
127).

Should i use the rescue floppy to go through the menus again and risk
some part of my config (especially my pcmcia card configuration; i
have spent a lot of time searching ...) to be wiped out ?!

Marc

Upgrade Debian 1.2 to 1.3

1997-11-25 Thread Marc Fleureck
Hi,

Recently I reported a problem about upgrading to 1.3 using some
dpkg-commands, which caused an error style can't open
/usr/local/lib. This problem was solved by simply creating the dir.

But the system has not done any upgrade. Even after running lilo (and
rebooting of course).
The file /etc/debian_version still says 1.2.

Also, the last command of the upgrade dpkg --purge --force-depends
texbin gives an error style ignoring request to remove texbin because texbin
isn't installed.

Marc

1997-10-02 Thread Marc Fleureck
Hi,

I run debian 1.3/kernel 2.0.30 and have PCMCIA card 3C562D/563D.
I am trying to access the network.

I began installing pcmcia-cs 2.9.5-3 together with pcmcia-modules
2.9.5-3. So I had to upgrade to kernel 2.0.30, which I did.
This still gave problems when starting PCMCIA (it finds the adapter,
but says 'loading failed, the module symbols from linux-2.0.30 don't
match your linux-2.0.30')

So I got the kernel-source to recompile pcmcia. I needed dpkg-dev to
use dpkg-source to extract the kernel-sources (dpkg-source -x) But this
required unstable versions of it, which needed again other unstable
 versions.

So, every (unstable) package I try to install complains about
dependencies, e.g.

dpkg-dev -- dpkg -- binutils -- gcc -- cpp -- ncurses, and so on.

Is this the normal way to do this ?

Regards,
Marc

dpkg-source

1997-09-24 Thread Marc Fleureck
3 files in dir to install sources: *.diff.gz, *.orig.tar.gz and *.dsc

dpkg-source -x fails with:

diff patches file whose dir does not appear in tarfile

I could comment some lines in *.dsc for the dir specified in the
error message, but I don't
understand the formats. How does it work ? So I wanted to install the
man pages for diff which gives the same kind of error ! What do to ?

Regards,
Marc

pcmcia/linux2.030 kernel and new problem

1997-09-19 Thread Marc Fleureck

The new kernel 2.0.30 boots ! Thanks for all the tips. Card Services
2.9.5 starts and recognizes the card ! but .. with another error
from cardmgr:

Loading failed ! The module symbols
 (from linux_2.0.30) don't match your linux_2.0.30.

Eh ?

It tells this after executing 3c589_cs.o

Now the new kernel boots (2.0.30)
Also Card Services 2.9.5-3 starts and recognizes the card
(socket 0: 3c562d/3c563d LAN + Modem Adapter.)

 Did you check lilo.conf ?

No, I just ran lilo. What about checking it ? It justhas boot and root
=/dev/hda2, the linux partition.

In the README of pcmcia-cs there is: All 2.0 kernels should work ...
??

Marc

linux and windoz

1997-09-19 Thread Marc Fleureck
For a long time I dream about running windoz on top of linux. I would
feel very comfortable runnig ms-office or other windoz programs next
to linux programs. (besides, the organisation I work for has
standardized on windows (NT4))

Maybe I don't hate windows enough ?

To make a long story short: it seems to me that wine is not advancing
very well (Word 2 starts ! wow !). NTFS file system is still alpha.
Recently I discovered (free!) Willows Software TWIN sources
(www.willows.com) ? Is this any better ? Any suggestions ?

Is there any hope ? Or is it just that bad !

Marc

tar archive overwritten

1997-09-19 Thread Marc Fleureck
URGENT. I know this is not the wright place to ask this kind of question,
but it is a very urgent one ! My news server is down, so I try here.
It could have happened on a linux system too ! Here's the problem
description:

System: Unisys SMP5400, Pentium P5/EISA, Sys 5R4 (4.0.2).

Tar archive overwritten. Help ! Does this sound familiar ? We need to
extract a dump file of about 4M that is on a DAT tape, ... somewhere.
Little problem: the (backup-) tape was overwritten by the command:

  tar -cvf /dev/rmt/cd0d0 file

Maybe there is some hope of retrieving the file with known name !?

Desperate.

Marc

dpkg-source error ?

1997-09-19 Thread Marc Fleureck
Hi,
I ran dpkg-source (dpkg-dev 1.4.0.8) on 3 files: *.diff.gz, *.dsc and
*.orig.tar.gz, as you described in the readme (dpkg-source -x *.dsc).

Its says:

  Can't locate POSIX.pm in @INC at /usr/bin/dpkg-source line 8.
  BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/bin/dpkg-source line8.

My system is Debian1.3/kernel 2.0.30.
Note: dpkg-dev was installed without any errors.

Marc

install new kernel 2.0.30 ??

1997-09-17 Thread Marc Fleureck
Hi,

I have installed a package kernel-image-2.0.30deb to upgrade
from 2.0.27. I used dpkg -i packname.deb. All went well. After a
reboot, the system still says it has the old kernel (uname -r).

Should I say switchkernel or something ??

Upgrade from an older Debian system ??

1997-09-16 Thread Marc Fleureck
Hi,

Thanks to everyone willing to reply to (sometimes annoying ?)
questions ! I am not a newbee to Linux, but somewhere in between I
guess ...

My system is Debian 1.2 with kernel 2.0.27 and a pcmcia
3c562/563 33.6 LAN/modem card (Olivetti echos p100d).

Heaving read the Web page about upgrading to Debian 1.3 from an older
version I followed the dpkg-instructions there without any errors.

I had just installed pcmcia-cs 2.9.5-3. Before there was no pcmcia
package installed. Now I have trouble starting the PCMCIA Card
Services (it says: Card Services release does not match). The
/sbin/cardmgr dates April 29 and /lib/modules/2.0.27/pcmcia dates Dec
7 1996. Incompatible ?

So I cannot access the network for the moment.
Upgrading to Debian 1.3 and a new kernel maybe could resolve these
incompatibilities.

The only problem is that I do not know how to proceed despite the
advice given, that (using) dselect should do the rest of the upgrade
to Debian 1.3.

Up till now I have successfully upgraded the base-files package. For
this to succeed I had to copy the package to disk together with the
Packages-file of the distribution site. Now dselect shows a
installed and available status (I have done an update in dselect).
My old version of Debian came from a cdrom.

What should I do now ? Which packages should I install and which not?
If I use the Packages-file from the distribution site, then I must
upgrade all my packages ? Ot could I have a mix of them ?

Without having an internet connection it is practically impossible to
copy all those packages one by one -- floppy -- disk.

Marc
